Official Google Device Manager HERE- Pushing to Phones Now & APK Leaked! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Themes and Apps

Sounds pretty cool... hopefully it's free and comes packed with features such as other similar free 3rd party apps already in the Play Store. Set to drop by summer's end!
UPDATE(8/3/13): Leak! Someone try it n let me know how it is!
Anyone currently using a 3rd party app for similar services?

Updated OP because an update came out today that it is pushing to devices now but is still not live yet! Also in that little article is an APK for it so someone download and install it and lemme know how it is

Since Android is open-source, wouldn't we be able to see if that were true? Unless they're putting closed-source binaries on every phone...

As far as the source code, I guess we could eventually find the possible back doors but; by installing an app like this, the user will have to grant the permissions to control the hardware on the device. Since Google could conceivably just give passwords away to law enforcement or whoever, installing this app would be an instant back door that is only as secure as the password. For this reason, I plan on staying with my third party device managers: Cerberus and Lookout.

Since this is just an update to Google Play Services which requires no change in permissions, some of what I just said doesn't really apply but, Google Search has access to the microphone. Free smileys aren't really free.

Android Market 3.4.4 - Notice a speed boost

Just curious, does the new Market seem a lot faster for you guys too?

How do I install this? Should I manually push the apk with root explorer for it to work? I tried regular install but it doesn't install.
Update: I manually pushed it with root explorer and it worked. Thx for the tip.

I would push/replace, clear dalvik and reboot.
I just installed like any other apk... No problem
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I simply downloaded it... clicked on the completed download... then had the option to install... went straight to the market and checked the version, no issues at all.
Renamed and pushed no problem. Def faster.
I hope this fixes the "insufficient space" bug on our phones.
Noticeably faster for me.

when it comes to the market, it only updates when it's open. it's the only app that does it that way. all other apps will show in the notifications. if I'm wrong, please let me know, but I don't think that's the case.

How do you know that this is the ONLY app?
But anyway, my point is if Google can do it on Android platform it does not matter with one app or many.
PS: off-topic, Google Map subscribes to bunch of intents, so it would be launched when you turn-on screen, WiFi etc... I would like start application when I press app icon... There are no other way to opt-out other then disable Map in pm.
Google maps can be stopped by using the app autostarts. All those apps that start by themselves when you do something, ie reboot phone connect to wifi ect... no longer plague me. True, I just delete most of them, but there are some I actually use (like maps and Gmail).
Unfortunately I can no longer find the exact app I use in the market, though I'm sure there are others that do the same thing. If anyone would like the apk for the one I use just let me know and I can post it next time I'm on my laptop.

If you found the developer posted it for free on XDA, please link to that... otherwise this breaks XDA rules.

URL associations with apps removed from ALL thunderbolt, possibly all HTC phones soon

This is a widespread issue among thunderbolt users, but I haven't seen a thread here yet.
I haven't accepted the OTA update from earlier this week, but last night my phone booted with what I assume was a update. Now, any URL can only be directed to the Web browser, not an individual app (for example, Google play links link to the play website, not the app. Same with youtube links). There's not too much out there about it, but from what I've seen, this is due to a new patent lawsuit from apple directed at HTC. Apparently HTC laid down and just removed the function. This is terrible and pretty much ruins the phones functionality.
As of right now the only work around I've heard of is custom roms. Personally I don't have that option as this is a corporate phone. Has anyone heard anything or does anyone have any ideas for a work around? I imagine what would work would be a fake "browser" that you would set as the default and just would reroute to apps, but I certainly don't have the developing know-how to make such a thing.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA
With the HTC One series, there's a new "App Associations" menu that allows you to assign what apps will be used for various link types... is there no equivalent in the new OTA update for the Thunderbolt?
After the update there is that setting in the applications menu under settings
Sent from my HTC Mecha using XDA
This is frustrating.
I updated to the software update and regret it to the fullest extent. Now NO videos of Youtube open in the app. This is a headache.
There is a new "apps association" menu in settings now, under Applications menu. But there is NO option to set YOUTUBE as a default like it used to be with ease.
Anybody here have a way around this??
What I found is using Opera Mini helps this by making it one less step to open videos in the app. But still miss the old direct way.
Help people!!
This is due to the patent judgment against HTC by Apple. The same judgment that recently delayed the release of the One X and the EVO 4G LTE. This feature will be removed in all future HTC releases.

I went with browser swap, but that doesn't really help with YouTube links. Maybe someone will stand up and code an app?

You can't. Apple patented the tech, all they will do is go after a new developer of such an app. Your best bet is to root, run titanium backup, and flash a custom rom that is based on an older Thunderbolt ROM if you want the feature back.

That's not exactly some HTC key/core feature. It's in every Android phone and part of the Android source itself. Even the Galaxy Nexus does it. It's not even a phone specific feature. PCs have done it for years using file://some-local-filesystem-point and using sockets to link apps to other apps. That's all Android does pretty much. Since everyone should be rooted on here (the thunderbolt is painful if you don't), it doesn't affect anyone.
Also I see no source links in your post. Means nothing if you can't link to something verifiable.

It is now and its weird that they decide to enforce it here it is, they say ad blockers violates section 4.4 and here it is
Also they still work as long as the host sources are still being updated and online
though one of the sources has gone offline for some reason

This BITES.
Just saw it elsewhere and came to post about it. My data plan was close to being used up and I hadn't flashed a newer CM10.1 since the weekend.
Not using titanium backup now, TWRP and Google have had my entire and app backups respectively the last couple months. The Google restore account has been working very well on 4.2.2. AdAware and my current fave aren't listed in "my apps" anymore.
Doubting that google will restore AdFree ever again.
If I can't find the .apk in my phone to save on the pc for re-install, how could I back-up this single program on my sd card or continue to modify the hosts file like Hosts MVPS on windows?

Seems to me that it's time to shift to a less constrained repository of apps. Perhaps F-Droid and has it's own Android client. Not sure what else is out there
Of course "less constrained" means less protection from malicious behaviour so common sense has to be more strictly adhered to.
Meantime, these links might help.

I have read an article from a website claiming that Android antivirus are useless since all Abdroid apps run within a sandbox and this greatly hinders antivirus from fully function. Is this valid claim? I thought the apps can function beyond sandbox to certain extent as long as they ask me permissions.

Linux is self secured in that users do not have permission to run applications for which the permissions do not allow. For example normal users cannot access configuration files. Root access is required. In order to install or change applications root access is also required.

However, that also means that, just like playstore apps, I should be aware of relatively new and unpopular apps.

True. I think XDA apps are as reliable as play store apps since apps on XDA gets constant feedbacks from other developers.
However, that also means that, just like playstore apps, I should be aware of relatively new and unpopular apps.

Would not even trust all apps from play store as google is not checking them before adding to the store. so they might be harmful as well... Hence, XDA apps are even trustworthier I would say :good:
During my years of Android experience. I have never heard of any Android phone getting a virus?
If you have anti-viruse softwares on your device. The only thing that'll do is slow your device down and restrict you to certain content.
So yes. Android anti viruses are useless.
If I helped, don't hesitate to hit that Thanks button

And seriously... there is already not a lot of viruses developp on linux, so on android...
There's no way an app could infect your phone when you aren't rooted, so Anti Virus on Android is useless.
Even if you are rooted, when you don't download the most obscure apks, chances are nihil you get a virus (or otherwise harmed). If you don't fully trust an apk, you than screen it using googles apk installer. It doens't slow down your device and works good.
Thanks for the insight

It can happen
Just recently, a friend got a virus on her Galaxy S6 from browsing via Chrome to her local CrossFit site, which is as follows:
http://brandonevenson.com/
Just downloaded ESET Mobile Security & Antivirus to give it a test run.
Thoughts?
Antivirus apps are all just gimmicks and completely useless also often causing more problems mainly by drastically hindering performance. A real computer virus is just impossible on a Linux based system like android because the nature of androids architecture isn't a comfortable environment for viruses to run quietly and stealthily and would take the most intense development Google longs for and for what some nerds contacts and porn browser history? The only thing close to a virus is maybe malware which then is no more than popup ads and such. So ask yourself who to worry about when so many antivirus apps are deceiving millions of people...

I have read an article from a website claiming that Android antivirus are useless since all Abdroid apps run within a sandbox and this greatly hinders antivirus from fully function. Is this valid claim? I thought the apps can function beyond sandbox to certain extent as long as they ask me permissions.

Antivirus is must for your android smart phone. Because many a times we come across an app exchange through which virus entry possibilities increase.

I believe the Android antivirus are useless but that doesn't mean there is no virus. There are viruses and I will continue to believe that all android antivirus are useless unless SafeBytes release their antivirus app for Android. I hope this meeting will be fruitful.
