Freezing & Bootloops (Not Fruit Loops :)) - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I received my Asurion refurbished S3 the other day to replace my original S3 whose screen I cracked. The original S3 had no issues to speak of.
The replacement is another story:
- while charging, after the phone falls asleep, the device won't wake up. The Blue LED is steadily lit and the phone is unresponsive to any button presses.
A battery pull resolves the issue until it happens again, which is multiple times daily.
- when not charging and after the S3 falls asleep, the device goes into a Bootloop on its own showing the Samsung 4LTE boot screen. This continues until the splash logo freezes. Only a battery pull revolves the issue until it happens again.
- while asleep and not charging, the S3 is unresponsive to button presses and the Blue LED flashes. Only a battery pull restarts the device.
The above occurs multiple times daily and is occurring after the device falls asleep.
I left the S3 stock without installing any additional apps to avoid any possible conflicts as the cause of any issues.
I'm thinking to just keep my original S3 with the cracked screen as it is working fine. I'd hate to get into a 'Boot Loop' with Asurion replacement devices as it is very time consuming to get one that's working properly.
I've read about the Dummy File Generator but don't know if I want to get into any further trouble shooting mode when the replacement device should just work out of the box, and I'm not sure if the issues I'm having are widespread, or are systemic with the MB1 OTA update.
Any suggestions are welcomed.

Guess I'm one of the unfortunate ones, although I've read that others have experienced this issue. May just be an issue on a limited number of devices.
Just went into a boot loop, then froze again.
Definitely going to send this back and most likely keep my cracked screen S3.
Fracture lines around the bottom and sides, but the bulk of the screen is intact.
Update:
Spoke with Asurion.
- very courteous rep.
- troubleshot device with me (standard troubleshooting)
- Issues remained (5 hours after 1st call, Lock screen Froze while charging. Needed to pull battery)
- called back Asurion
- rep was going to send me a New S3, But when I asked to verify 32GB storage, was told it was 16GB
- replacement device is going back, and I'm keeping the broken glass device.
Hmmmm.... so much for insurance, this time around at least.
But I couldn't be without full service for another 2 days again waiting for another refurbished device to arrive. At least my original device is working.

I have the same issues, mine has been caught in a boot loop today for no reason whatsoever, after steaming music through bluetooth. I believe it may be cause by the bad update that came out a few weeks ago, that VZW pulled.
I am rooted, but didn't even have enough space to do a nandroid. So either I factory reset or find some other way to get into my phone (probably mount the system)

Nexus 5 Screen Freeze

Was at about 30% battery and the screen froze as in it wouldn't take any touch events. The backlight would react as if the screen wasn't touched. It seems like the touch events just were not registering but the phone worked in the background. Kernel issue maybe? I have been using faux.
Something similar ....
I had a similar experience on the 15th .... took my N5 off the Qi charger and the screen froze when i tried to unlock it.
I hit the power button and was able to unlock and get a few touches in before it froze again.
I was finally able (after much screen off/on cycles) to get down to the developer options and turn on show touches & show cpu usage.
... background processes looked fairly normal when the screen was frozen(touches showed as frozen) ...
I was rooted, stock rom except for xda user Jishnu Sur's N5 camera mod and running a couple tried & true root apps(Stickmount & QuickBoot). Thought some software issue might be jamming up the digitizer i/o causing it to freeze.
Reverted entirely to stock (the Team Win recovery was also experiencing screen freeze - buttons worked fine) including removing TRWP and re-locking the boot loader!!
The screen freezing problem persists ... my conclusion is that it's a hardware issue. :crying:
It's possible you are seeing the same thing, but I haven't seen anything in the forums to indicate it's a widespread problem.
Returning it for a replacement phone ... :fingers-crossed:
Hi,
same problem here from France.
I already returned a Nexus 5, after multiple freeze I tried to format data partition via bootloader, (no rooted phone, following google instructions for stock reset) then the phone crash wile formatting, it never wake up gain.
When I get a new one from google after one or two week same problem appears, and it's append more and more often, since monday my phone crash one time more every night, and all the day today.
A this time I'm still trying to load it sine I came back from work seven hour ago, battery still at 49%.
I think it's and hardware issue too.
I'm very disappointed about Google and I'll never by anymore LG products.
Thanks for reading.

Freezes tend to happen on custom kernels specially if you under-volt it too much. have you done that?

Last week I had the same problem with my new NEXUS 5. IT’S TOTALLY A HARDWARE ISSUE.
LG products are however not so bad in the JAPAN market but still we are expecting a lot from LG technology.
LG services suck.
I am facing the same problem with my Nexus 5. Unrooted, bought 7 months back from India itself, was working fine till around two weeks back, when the lags, screen freeze, blacking out n all appeared. Got it repaired twice at the LG centre. They changed the front display touchpad as well as the charging connector strip. The problem still persists.

[Q] heat damaging phone?

I'm having several issues with my AT&T LG G3 (stock ROM) and I'm not sure if they're related or what the next steps should be for troubleshooting. Here's the timeline of issues:
Over the last couple of months my LG G3 and the battery has been getting really hot to the point the phone is unbearable in my pocket. I usually restart it and the temperature goes down (until it eventually goes back up hours later under normal usage). (NOTE: I got a notification only once during this time saying charging is disabled due to high phone temperature)
Suddenly today bluetooth and wifi won't turn on and they both give an error saying "connection not allowed" (cellular and gps works fine). I restart the phone, problem exists. Disabled battery saver mode/feature, problem exists. Booted into safe mode, problem exists.
Now when toggling the wifi and bluetooth button in settings the phone freezes temporarily, restarts and then freezes at the AT&T logo booting screen. Holding the power button for 10 seconds doesn't restart it/power it off - only pulling the battery out, waiting a couple of minutes and putting it back in does it power up (it does not power back on if I put the battery back in immediately). Then it gets to the LG logo booting screen (sometimes the AT&T logo screen), but restarts itself 2 or 3 times before finally booting into Android.
So, software problem (Android having issues talking to the bluetooth and wifi radio or corrupt system files)? Hardware problem where the excessive heat over the last couple months have caused damage to the bluetooth and/or wifi radio or some other components? Or maybe its the battery is damaged by the heat and now it gives bad voltage, amperage, etc. to the phone?
Any kind of help would be appreciated.
Thanks
sounds like a hardware issue to me. How long have you had the phone? Have you tried connecting your phone to a power outlet and seeing if the issue persists?

I just went into the AT&T device support center and they replaced it since it was still under their 1 year warranty. I can say for sure it's a hardware or software issue and not a damaged battery issue as the battery is in the new unit (actually "certified like new") and it's working fine (battery life is much better too). I wish I tried a factory reset to narrow it down further but I felt I was annoying the AT&T techs and just wanted to leave (they did me a favor of giving me a replacement phone on the spot, but I wanted to troubleshoot the old phone further being the persistent nerd that I am, LOL).
So if you have any of these issues, I recommend backing up your phone and factory reset it. If the issues persist then it's likely a hardware issue and needs to be replaced.
Hopefully that helps someone.

They over clocked the CPU too much to make up for lost speed from all there bloat wear. Solution....only run there apps....or root. I tell ya,,arrg.....Mine was getting so hot it was uuncomfy on my ear. Way to go Driod, google and At&t
I received a supposedly "new" unlocked LG G3 D850 1 week ago. I wanted to ensure it worked before I loaded my stuff so I didn't put a SIM in for the first 5 days. It had a wifi problem in the first 10 minutes, but then wifi worked for several days while the phone just sat there and I checked weather and news occasionally. I needed to test with my SIM before the return period expired and I ran into a small problem there. That got resolved but neither wifi nor bluetooth have worked since then. "Connection Not Allowed". I see it's a VERY common problem for many LG phones. If this is a new phone, how can it be heat damaged already? I think it's defective hardware or a software bug. I haven't even loaded any new apps on the phone - it's completely AT&T stock. I will probably return it and pick a different brand.

Nexus 5 Black Screen Issue

Hey, I m facing problem of nexus 5 black screen issue it turns on but nothing shows on display...(display tested works, and flex cable also replaced)
Can anyone help in this??
There is no display in fastboot mode either?
If you are sure the display connecting cables work, sounds like a motherboard problem.
I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but I thought it would be easier to post in here since I seem to be having a similar issue. I can't figure out if it is software-related or hardware-related.
I recently updated my Nexus 5 to Lineage OS 14.1 (11/7/17) and my screen began glitching. After an indeterminate length of time, my screen starts bugging out - the touchscreen won't register any touches, pixels get glitched and then it usually goes black. Sometimes the display will reset itself, and other times it will stay just black. Now the odd thing is if I force a reset by holding the power button down, I can get it to reboot and usually it fixes the issue... briefly. I've noticed sometimes however that even the boot animations will glitch out too, but by the time it gets to my home screen it's just fine, again for an indeterminate amount of time
The phone was bought used from Swappa probably almost a year ago now. Worked great up until now, I'm sure it's been dropped before both by me and the previous owner, but the screen itself from the outside doesn't show any signs of damage (No cracks, scratches).
I've since gone back to an early October build of LOS14.1 that wasn't giving me any issues like this, but I'm still getting them. So I'm leaning towards it being a very odd hardware issue or maybe I need to Factory Reset and dirty flashing updates is catching up to me.

Cover Screen Issue

I have had this phone for one week and unfortunately have a problem with the small display on the cover. The display intermittently crashes and you are no longer able to see the time, charge status, signal strength, or any notifications without restarting the phone. Interestingly the crash does not affect the display of charging info when it is on the wireless charger. I am working with Samsung to get this resolved and they have assured me that they will replace the phone if necessary. So far they have tried wiping the cache, and having it re-imaged at one of their authorized repair sites with no success. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue or have an idea about what could be causing it. BTW...... I really love this phone otherwise.

I have observed the same issue. I've noticed that it recovers eventually but it is annoying as well. I called the premier service but they have not acknowledged it is a software bug yet. They had me factory reset but I am still observing the same.
I can also confirm it is not due to the case they ship with, nor the leather case, or finger grime that may be conflicting with the capacitive sensor. The rest of the phone knows the main screen is closed. My suspicion (speculation) is that it is the software as the cover display is really the only new hardware portion, in regards to most of the components from S10 parts bin, or Fold screen tech which has been pretty mature from a design standpoint.
Love the phone, hope they they can resolve this in an update sooner or later. Please let us know if its common to all.
Thanks.
I have the same issue. Been using the phone for about 12 days and the cover screen goes bonkers. It will appear some time but only clock and battery life, can't use it for notifications nor calls nor selfie camera. Plus open phone to answer is not functioning
This is my second Z-Flip - had the original one on release day and now the 5g version. Yesterday, out of nowhere (for the first time on either phone) the cover screen went blank. It works still (I can change songs and answer calls, for example) but the screen is black. This is 100% a software issue. Called Samsung 'premier' which puts you in the line for normal support, when they pick up they transfer you to premier (makes no sense). They suggest a factory reset. Odd thing is 2 calls today actually showed on the display. No rhyme or reason. I have tried powering down, restart, and safe mode. Very frustrating.
I'm also having this issue, I had a different issue in the past where the phone would not recognise when it was opened or closed and just behaved like a regular smartphone with screen on off. The cover screen also came on at the same time as the main screen so basically the phone thought both were one display.
This time I am getting the issue as above, the screen is black, pressing power does not bring it up (always, sometimes it will randomly show and I can use it, before a factory reset I just did it wouldn't be functional as touch only worked halfway, I could drag it left or right but it would just stay where it was, thinking my finger was still on it.) if I press the power repeatedly sometimes it shows, sometimes it shows offset so only half the display lights up and has moved everything to that side and cropped it. It's completely a software bug, my phone has no scratches or dents and is in great condition. It's a newish model as my original Z Flip got replaced by my network by a 5G model.

Black Screen Of Death

Hi All
Has anyone had any issues with a black screen?
Everything else works like incoming calls and notifications but the screen it totally black!
Woke up early hours last night and noticed no AOD so tried to turn my phone on but the screen was just dead. Tried the volume and power button but still no joy
Power it down completely then plug in the charger.
If nothing shows on the screen it sounds like you lost some significant hardware... maybe just a connector.

Same happened to my SM-N9860 unit when I woke up today. I about to unlock and the display suddenly went black screen. Did everything but no luck. I am also sure it's the display that's f***d up. The phone is still working - I can still access it in Dex and Link to Windows. This is my second Samsung phone with f**d up display for unknown reason. This is crap Samsung. Not expecting for this from an expensive flagship smartphone. I swear this is the last.

By the way, how did you fix your phone?
I tried searching it on the net, seems a number of Note 20 ultra units are experiencing the same.

Poor parts QC.
Samsung will substitute components and smaller chipsets in the middle of a production run. This can lead to unpredictable behavior especially after firmware updates... or outright failures like this.
Not reassuring especially with a flagship phone.

hi im facing exact same thing in my N986 B Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. I had 10 percent battery left. i had put phone on charge and saw after 20 minutes and tghe screen was black.
Now its blackscreen can connect with tv via hdmi dex mode
but phone restarts after 10 minutes.
the touch seems fine as mouse function works phone is on but no display
can you tell exactly what you did when your phone revieved after one day
did u keep it on. charge all tiime tried reset or removed charging
or nothing and tried after 1 day
Edit After 24 hours of tapping slappingrebooting installing stock firmware. my display came back alive.
last thing was i was using phone in dex mode and trying to open close camera app rapidly by direct touch on screen. i dont know what worked but it saved my 300 dollars of screen replacement
I have exactly the same issue.
I was typing on whatsapp when suddenly screen get black. It was on friday morning. Notifications were ok, voice commands too. Touchscreen ok, I could use it normally when using my TV as screen with HDMI cable or with my notebook, when connected to windows or even Dex.
One day earlier I had an issue with the new magisk update. I freeze magisk manager wich was force closing but later, I managed to reinstall with dex and was working fine. Not sure if it's related.
I already flashed fresh stock Android R rom, wich I thought would solve any issues related to magisk or any other software issue.
24h after flash stock rom and keep force rebooting and taping, and my display is still dead.
Tried to tap, slap, shake (I can her some noise next to camera module when shaking, is it normal? I took off S-pen and microsd tray to see if it was the cause, but the noise still persists). No damage, water, or anything else. Only 2 months of use.
Display is still dead.
I'm draining battery now with some apps that also vibrate phone, to see what happens when full drained.
I live in Manaus/Brazil and repair centers are not working until March 23 because of Sars-CoV2. And my knox is tripped. It would cost a lot If I have to replace display or even the phone, since they probably will say it's no longer covered by warranty.
Any tips are welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Hope I have that lucky as well.
It happened to me again today. Surprisingly, a strong knock at center of the screen revived it again.

Not good if there's a recall... crap QC is getting to be a bad Samsung habit.
Those of you with BSOD issues: Did you have intermittent wifi connectivity issues as well? My N20U had the 'connected to wifi AP but no internet' for the last month. Then today after unplugging the OEM charger, checking charge level, never picking the phone up from the desk, and returning to it 30 minutes later the BSOD had hit. No amount of hard restarts or waiting fixed it and it had to get shipped back. Just wondering if there is any correlation between the wifi issue and the screen going out, and if people should start sending their note in ASAP if the wifi problem occurs before the screen goes?
hello
i had the same problem (didn't have any Wifi issues before)
and after the screen went black for 2 day , it came back and worked for a few hours.. then went off again and Never came back
i tried everything, resets , cables , connecting to Dex or Hdmi , updating.. but Never worked
i went to Samsung and they said screen must be replaced ( will pay for it as i am out of warranty)
can you tell me what have you done or if anything worked for you?
My screen went black after a screen replacement. Only the front glass was broken not the digitizer or actual screen. From what I can tell it's not just the screen that's dead, it's the digitizer too. The S-Pen board underneath it all isn't even registering. When I plug it in the computer doesn't see it so Dex won't connect and there is no signal for HDMI to work. Had the USB port replaced just to be sure it wasn't a bad port.
It's like some one took the graphics card out of a computer and took the touch screen monitor. The phone still gets signal. It connected to my smart Fossil watch and I could answer calls and texts.
But the phone is 9 months old. And from what I've heard from parts distributors it's not the screen that's the issue. So now I have a new motherboard. Now I have to figure out how to program it....
