It is pretty crazy how people who have the skyrocket ignore that the screen looks awful when dim. Its even worse that Samsung has not stopped production to fix the problem either. You would think the white one would come with a fixed screen. Usually by this time you have people writing reviews and ranting about phone defects on YouTube, yet with this phone nothing. Just hoping someone agrees with me and maybe we can stick these problem up samsungs behind.

Agreed.
I have mine set at 50% and its bright enough for me all the time.
I never go lower than that though, so I personally never experience poor screen quality.

I've never notice the problems mentioned throughout the forum regarding dim settings and colors/lines. I'm sure that to a good eye mine is too afflicted.
One a side note, took my screen protector off today, and man! is that screen gorgeous. It's gonna be hard to put it back on, but I learned that lesson with the Atrix when I took it's protection off and it hit the ground.
You see, and that is the problem. You are ignoring to issue. So when your in a dark room you have your screen full brightness? I don't so it does bother me.

I agree my screen sucks at low brightness. I mainly run my low to save power only turn it up when outside. I wrote a review on Samsung site and did give a bad review on the screen.

I just picked up a white skyrocket yesterday and I've got the screen issues / lines. Looks like a "brushed metal" overlay on top of everything.
I'm going to be getting it exchanged for a new one tomorrow.

Maybe I got lucky... I've had my I727-SR for about 4wks now and haven't experienced the screen lines / screen problems others are posting.... I consistently run at low brightness with a screen protector and screen looks perfect.... no lines, blobs or other anomalies.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
just picked one up today. white one.
i see the lines below 50% brightness. above, they are gone.
I believe this is just a simple issue of having the same pixel density of the galaxy S2 but with a larger screen.
this should be device wide.......i dont see why people should have different results....
edit: i have it only above 30% brightness actually....
No problems here... at 0 it still looks great, no lines or weird issues

I have personally seen this vary from device to device. what may not be that bad on yours could be 20x's worse on another. others of us are in fact picky and expect more for what we paid for this device.

When I play video ie Netflix YouTube etc I notice that the picture quality is not.what I expect.from a 250$ phone. I love this phone and that is.my only complaint. I have tried.adjusting.the brightness but it doesn't seem to help. Is this a problem that all are having?
I just got the Skyrocket today and just now turned the brightness all the way down and did not see any issues with screen clarity. Looks pretty good to me.

Mine has the same issues. However, they are ignorable if you customize the look of your phone. I changed the screen density and customized my phone with a dark bg and modified system apks.

When ever my screen goes black in been opening apps or websites, I notice that there are lighter spots or smears, but they only show up on the black screen. Does anybody else have this, and or know what it is? besides on black screens, it really doesn't affect anything, but I worry it might get worse

Do a search for "blobs"
There are quite a few posts on it. Some phones are worse than others. Both of our skyrockets have small identical blobs

The lines are driving me insane as well. The blobs are noticeable in clockwork mod in the dark. I see like a bunch of black dots on my screen everywhere.... Damn.. is Samsung planning on fixing this issue for our phones?
They say they are "looking into it."
I only ever see the blobs on otherwise black screens if my eyes are very dark-adjusted. One example is if the phone is off and charging, and I wake it up (but don't turn it on) in the middle of the night.
That is: the blobs are the next best thing to a non-issue for me. The lines are a minor annoyance that I can ignore easily enough under almost all circumstance.
Both exist though, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. A little disappointing to be sure.
I've found that the best way to evaluate your phone for blobs is to take your phone, set it to the lowest brightness setting, use the Gallery to display the color #101010 on it, put the phone in a dark room, then use a DSLR camera on the no-flash setting to take a picture of it. You need to have NO light at all coming from anywhere else, so a closet or internal room with a counter works best. It'll take about 10 seconds to capture, during which the phone and the camera need to be perfectly still.
Ignore the green tint - it's a side-effect of the overexposure.
My results:
Phone 1: My mother's Skyrocket, purchased about a year ago.
Phone 2: My Skyrocket, purchased about 6mos ago. I gave the link for this image to an AT&T Rep in the Warranty dep't, and got an RMA ready within 10 minutes.
Hey everybody...
I just got a new note & everything is excellent except that I've been noticing some weird flickering in the screen... Its not even flickering, its more like it goes dark for milliseconds & its not that frequent. Should i be conserned or its a software issue... does anyone have such an issue?

I have seen this, I was worried but it is very difficult to return my unit as it is a grey import.
I totally didn't notice that it went away after changing screen timeout to 1 minute. Battery life is good enough to easily cope with this.
Setting back to 15 seconds to see if it re-occurs.
fyi, I leave brightness auto.

I can confirm that the problem is solved. The whole issue is that some apps are conflicting with the hover function for the s pen. Once you disable that function in settings all becomes completly normal without any issues.

I have the similar issue on my Note 10.1 - the browser is the biggest 'flasher' and it seems random. I called Samsung support - They had me reset to factory and the issue went away, but eventually came back. I don't want to have to keep resetting to factory as that is painful for me to reconfig everything and I tend to believe that if I restore to ClockWorkMod backup, the issue will still be there.

I found smearing also happens not only in pure black background.
For example in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327389
The first post of the thread smears if I read with xda app using "xda free" display style (dark theme) setting. The first post has dark blue text in dark grey background.
I tried to capture a video but the phenomena cannot be seen in video.
Sent from my GT-I9500
Still, there are people here who keep on repeating smearing is fixed.
It's not and won't be due to its hardware nature. /working theory /
"Congratulations" to all the reviewers who missed such an easily to notice problem. I noticed it 5 minutes after launching this phone for the first time...

Might sound silly, I have tried to replicate this issue on my s4, I honestly cannot see the problem. Am I the only one? Normally I am the first to notice things like this, making me think that the issue is either sporadic or that samsung changed something in more recent units, (mine is about 3 weeks old)

Make a paint document and fill it with pure black. Then delete a white space in the middle. Open it from the phone and move the white dot around. If you get no smearing then - you have a normal phone and we have deffective units, which is not nice, but can be repared; or your brightness is very high. Lower brightness exaggerates the problem.
However, since MEA Samsung changed Settings' background to grey from black, which for me is a sign that they know about it and that's a hardware limitation. Pixels "lag", because it's the first time since Galaxy S that black actually is "turned off".
It's worse with grey on black than it is with white on black and also it gets worse the lower you have the screen brightness. grey on black at minimum brightness is an absolute mess on my phone. But i should stress you dont really see the problem in normal usage at all.
Hi, on firmware mdm so not the newest. I'll do further testing tomorrow
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium HD app
The darker the screen is, the more noticeable the smearing becomes.Touchwiz menus were black and now are grey, thats how samsung thought of to fix this but in certain apps with real black background it all comes alive again so i think this is a hardware issue as many agree also and its a bit of a let down to Samsung Quality Standards when we pay so much for a flaship device like this. Definitely there is room for improvment with this amoled screens.

I have not noticed any screen smearing till now.
Right, I have tested using the white dot in the middle of a true black image.
I can confirm the issue does occur, but only when the screen is set to or just above minimum and not to the extent I see it as a problem, I still cannot seem to replicate the issue on settings window even at minimum brightness.
For me, this is a none issue however If the issue is more prominent on some screens I can understand how it would be annoying.
Cheers
Steve

I may be one of the few to not actually give a rat's ass. I didn't care about it when the settings window was truly black and I don't care now when it's LCD-ish black (greyish-black).

with high brightness you will not notice the smearing problem. With low brightness is when you can notice it
Just try to read articles in Pocket app or in feedly using black themes.
I switched to ligtht/white themes killing battery life but avoiding smearing. Now my device lasts 3h screen time at best. F... great.
Amoled screen that's not really compatible with true black! The most advertised benefit of amoled is gone with this flawed screen.

Are you 100% sure about that? If that's really the case, it's probably some feature in the kernel that actually turns off pixels completely.

This is just an issue of uneven aging of the individual LED's. Statusbar stays black most of the time so the pixels do not age as fast as other pixels on the screen.
Within time this makes statusbar appear more bright than the rest of the screen.
My 4 year old and still kicking strong Galaxy S1 (I9000) has this noticeable on any evenly colored image.
Now that I know of this, I use Tinted statusbar mod (requires Xposed) to keep statusbar from being black all the time. This means the LED's in statusbar will also age faster = more so with the rest of the screen.
