Surface Pro Recovery IMG Broken - General Questions and Answers

Hello to the XDA community
I often come your forum to resolve some problem, but now I have one that I do not have the answer means.
In fact, one day I wanted to put my recovery partition on my Pro Surface on an SD card class 4 but very slow. So I said to myself: "I shoed it later with a USB key that I would buy on Amazon"
I bought this USB drive, but I wanted to reset my Pro Surface thing I had done in the past and it worked fine.
And nothing works I can not reset my area. So I ran a lot of forum and I have not found a concrete answer. Thereafter I had a problem with BCD so I could not start my Pro area.
I really tried everything, tried to open up the Install.wim with WinRar and apparently the file and corrupt. I downloaded the ISO recovery Trig0r and I could open Install.wim. So I concluded that my recovery partition is corrupt.
I still stinks BCD fixed my problem by creating a bootable USB drive.
By searching the web with Google, I came across a video of a person who has recovered this area through the partition RT someone else. So I concluded that we can do this the same with PRO Area
I seek to have, please, a recovery partition for Surface Pro 128GB from the U.S. (although I think it will be such as to Canada)
It would be very honorable to you, because I want to refurbish my Surface Pro then install Linux and if one day someone arrives install Mac OSX because it is a more stable system for Pro Tools, Ableton Live ect ... (I know many of you do not like the fact you want to install Mac OSX on a Surface Pro, Mac if you want to buy it but I wanted a Mac Pro area and I do not have the means to m buy another computer. And I know there is a controversy between the legal and illegal or not if we use the official version of Mac OSX)
Anyway all this is another story.
I hope someone can help me solve my problem.

Original Impression - Is this for real?

I bought this Gtablet when my wife and I were out doing last minute Christmas shopping on Friday afternoon. No actual live unit on display or available at Sears so bought one based on hope. My first impressions were very mixed. It was painfully slow when I first booted it up while waiting for my wife who had gone into another store and I waited for her in the car (plugged in using inverter we carry with us). Later when we got home it downloaded the update and that helped the speed issue (but still sluggish) but I've run into all kinds of issues that have me ready to return this thing.
First thing I noticed is the number of times that apps force close on the GT including the browser built into the unit. That is about to drive me nuts but I discovered another even more major issue - for me. I planned to use this device to log into our webmail server when I'm travelling in order to get my mail. I can log into the webmail and I can bring up the mail but when I open a piece of email I cannot scroll the screen to read the entire email. I also have a Moto DX and I can read my email via web just fine on that (don't like it because of the small screen and keyboard). So, why does my DX work fine with our webmail client and the GT not work? I am clueless and ticked off.
I was going to return it today but my wife wants me to hold off and call Viewsonic support but I have my doubts that they will be of much help. So, I'm wondering if putting up a custom ROM might help because of using a different kernel?
I have a couple of weeks to return this but I want it either working or gone so I have a proposal. I'm new to Android and don't want to take the chance of bricking this and losing my money and I need this done quickly in order to make a decision. I"m willing to pay a modest fee for someone "KNOWLEDGEABLE" to possiby teamviewer into one of my machines to to root/rom this unit. There would absolutely have to be a return to stock method in case the new rom doesn't work either.
I have a Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit machine, Win 7 Prof. 64 bit and a Win XP 32 bit machine available to use. In reading through a number of threads here it seems that various iterations of Windows have issues with the drivers for this. You can PM me here.

Unless you mess around with the bootloader, you cant really brick it. Nobody has yet, and I doubt you would be the first.
Also I reccomend this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885940
It is like A lite eversoin of TNT lite. It speeds it upi while keeping it stockish.
Many of us understand your experience. Most of us acknowledge that the first software was not what it should have been.
I have a modded machine which is super. I have an OTA 3389 tablet which is more than acceptable.
From your comments, it sounds to me like your plan to return is the best course of action.
The G-Tablet can be a super machine, but not without some interest in working with and improving it on your part.
Sorry this is not better news. Maybe someone else will respond with a different idea.

Yep, just check the dev forum for instructions on installing new custom firmware. I'd also recommend making sure that you install clockwork mod 0.8 to ease backup/restores.
...OTOH from what I've heard is that the new stock fw 3389 is quite a bit better than what it ships with. And from there you can add a few minor updates, rooting, maybe the performance pack, sideload some apps and possibly the market "fix" which might be good enough for you, but even then I'd really have to recommend installing clockwork mod simply for the ease of making an image of a nicely working modified system and then being able to restore that if something messes it up...
Tablet is really nice, stable, and fast once properly setup and it's not really too hard to do any of the above IF you FOLLOW the instructions and READ them ENTIRELY and the caveats BEFOREHAND.
Really it's almost plug and play...

Here's a trick that works for me: if I zoom in a little on the webmail page that I cannot scroll, after the zooming in I am able to scroll to view the entire email.
I guess that soon you'll find the lack of Copy/Paste. Apple was run out of town for this and Windows Phone 7 too. At least with the G Tablet the lack of Copy/Paste seems to be limited to the stock apps.

Thanks John for that suggestion!! It worked and I can read my email from the G. That makes me happy.
Now for a new issue, I formatted a 16gig SD (FAT32) and put that in, the unit says that it knows that it is there but when I connect the unit using the USB cable to my Win 7 (64) machine its finds the machine, I tell it to activate USB transfer mode but I don't see SD2 in there. I wanted to transfer a pile of music onto it but can't do that since I can't see it. I tried transferring the music directly to the sd and then putting it into the G but when I do that it doesn't find anything.
I didn't really find anything on point in searching so if I'm missing that please point me to the thread.
I think I will go ahead and work with this. I've used and moded Win Mobile phones for the last ten years but am new to Android.
The offer for help still stands if anyone wants to take advantage and I would like to use it as a learning experience as I get into Android.
Oh yeah, thanks to all for the super fast responses. That is really appreciated. Even though it only shows that I have 5 or six posts here that isn't quite accurate. Many years ago when this site first opened I found it because I was using XDA phones but those were all WinMO at the time. I drifted away for a long time and when I came back now I am a new member again here. No longer a WinMo user and I really don't like Windows Phone 7 so I bought a Moto DX and love the phone, got my wife an HTC Incredible (she gave up her iPhone for that and that took a LOT of convincing on my part) but I am pretty much really happy with the Android OS and where it seesm to be going.
What I do love about the G is the size, the Galaxy Tab is just too small and the 800 horizontal resolution is too small so when I found a 10" tablet with 1024 and only $379.95 it sounded like a great deal. The screen angle is a ***** but I can live with that but I am sorely missing the Market (GMarket is sad). Looking forward to getting this machine rooted and rom'ed and up and running like it should be.

Install the latest update and do a factory restore inside the security section of settings.
Then if you want install the tnt enhancement pack from the device section. Don't worry about returning to stock because they don't even open the box when you return or exchange. If they did, they would have no idea what they would be looking at.

You should be able to see the microsd on the Gtab using, for example, ES File explorer. It'll be at /sdcard2.
As for seeing /sdcard2 from your pc, I thought I saw a post saying that if you have winamp installed on the gtab, it has an option for mounting sdcard2, and when that's enabled you can see /sdcard2. Haven't tried that myself.

P.S. Here's the thread about winamp and sdcard2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880237&highlight=winamp
Ahead of the game.
Hi racedog, actually I think you are ahead of the game. You seem to have made a lot of progress if you bought this Christmas eve.
How did you get it to run in the parking lot of the mall on Christmas eve? Even with a power inverter for power, hoe did you get a WiFi connection?
So far my G Tablet is stock and I am over-all happy with it. However, after Viewsonics post that they won't be providing any support for swapping the LCD screen, I feel they are missing the point. Their post said they would be anouncing some new products soon (my guess is at CES right after the first of the year).
I might end up taking my G Tablet back to Sears and waiting for the newer, more powerful and maybe more promising second generation tablets I am sure are to come at CES.
This tablet has been fun and I may keep it, but, I would really like to know the price points on the new models at CES.
Sucks out of the box.
Erase it and start over.
Load Clockwork Recovery Mod first! Put the update.zip on the sdcard, don't worry about the external SD method.
Once you have that boot mod, it's next to impossible to screw it up.
Flash that then get TNT lite 3.1.0 plus the supplement
Make sure you format the SDCARD using the advanced menu 2048 and 0 swap r it will crash on ya.
Do the full market fix. Download Dolphin HD and you will have a very usable tablet.

I will be doing the clockwork mod and putting on a new rom. The question is about formatting the card. You mention above used "advanced menu 2048", I don't know where I would find that on android on the G, or are you referring to something else?
I didn't get it connected while in the car, I just had it plugged in so that I could take a look at it and start putting a charge on it. I didn't connect until I got home. However, I DID try connecting it in the car using my Moto DX with wireless tether. The dx showed that it was running but the G never found the signal from the phone. It did see a few other secured wifi connections but it didn't see the phone. I have no idea whether this was because I don't have wifi tethering setup correctly on the DX or what the deal is but I figured I would work with that later.
I don't really care if I have to tether via usb with the phone but wifi is a lot cleaner and easier if possible. I know that easy tether and pdanet are out there but I haven't checked to see if they have an android client yet, I've only used them on my Win 7 netbook.

I found that the stock rom cannot use ad-hoc networks. I had to use the hack for the 3G Hotspot app on the DX to get it working on the Gtab. Once I upgraded to TnT lite than I was able to use Wireless Tether and stopped getting all the drops and reconnects too.
I really think that you will be happy with this as soon as you mod it with what's here in this community. I have only been here for less than a week and have found answers to all my questions. Good luck.

I appreciate the offer but because of the holidays I won't be able to take you up on it until probably Tuesday, maybe tomorrow Monday if I get REALLY lucky. I going to be trying to do as much as I can myself until them.
I wondered if the problem might be that the stock rom did not recognize ad hoc networks because I looked for the option to select it and it was not there. Thanks for that info.
R
Forgot, the winamp solution didn't work. I selected the mount option in winamp but it did nothing. I will get back to this issue once I get the greater issue of the rom and wifi connect to my phone fixed. Those are the real biggies that need fixing first.
R
Thanks to rothnic this new G has CWM installed and tnt like running on it along with Market and other apps that I've downloaded from it. What a huge difference this makes, my constant FC's seem to have stopped happening and I am now very happy with this unit. What a world of difference.
The screen is still a major issue but I can live with it (for now, will keep watching the screen swapping thread) but the device is fast, functional and completely usable whereas 24 hours ago I was set to return it to Sears but my wife talked me out of that and to try fixing it.
Again, special thanks to rothnic for all the "above and beyond" help and patience and also to all of the Gtab community here for the help and suggestions.

Star N9589 MTK 6589 Quadcore 1GB/8GB

There is already an active thread on B94M/B943 but none on N9589. I am hoping to start one.
I received mine a few weeks ago and still playing with it. It is still unrooted because I am waiting for my micro-sd to arrive. I installed ADB_usb_driver_120827_v3 and MtkDroidTools_v246 and seems to work fine. Mine is the 1GB/8GB version, came with Android 4.2.1 and bought it on ebay for US$230. Would have bought it from aliexpress (cheaper) but their payment system put me off.
I am not sure but I think this phone is manufactured by HUACHEN Technology Limited.
Mod Edit...link removed

Hello Dreamerman, I too just got the Star N9589 and am very happy with it. I was wondering what service provider you are going through? I been having a heck of time trying to get service for this phone. I found a person who left a comment on a N9589 they bought on Amazon : http://www.amazon.com/Star-MTK6589-Quad-core-Capacitance-SmartPhone-Grey/dp/B00BVUXQ2W . They got theirs working on a pre-pay service Net 10, I have tried both straight talk and net 10 and no luck so far. Thanks

I had to factory reset mine 3 times to get 3G working. Previously only getting 2G. Have you tried factory reset?
Issues discovered so far....
1. Sometimes the person I am speaking to reported hearing echos. This applies to both land line and mobile.
2. Speaker volume too low. I suppose this can be corrected via engineer menu.
I confirm this phone supports a 64GB micro-sd card (FAT32) although specs says upto 32GB.

OK good to know, what does factory reset do for the phone exactly? I was worried about only getting 2G speeds using GSM. I read up on a youtube channel that a guy is using AT&T with his N9859, so maybe this is what I will have to do. Was hoping to use a pre-pay service but not sure that is possible with this phone. Thanks for the heads up on the echoing issue..

Thats great, I noticed too when buying my phone that some of the specs were under-rated from what they really were. Interesting, guess its still a big plus the phone is better than what they show on the specs thus far!
Revman, factory reset means a fresh reinstall of your stock rom to original state from factory. You will loose all apps you install yourself and all customisations like wall paper etc. In my case, I also lost some Chinese apps that came with the phone which I didn't want so that is a bonus.
Antutu score when I got the phone is about 12000 but after factory reset it went up to 13140 so that is a bonus too.
Engineer menu is *#*#3646633#*#* but if you install free app Mobileuncle Tools from Play Store, you can get into the engineer menu from there. It has AppToSD built in.
Also if you are buying a 64GB card from ebay, be careful. I bought 4 over past 4 weeks and all has been fakes. Better buy from shops although cost more.

That is not all. I also noticed that while conversing using speaker, besides the low volume, I hear crackling as if the reception is very poor. I miss out hearing a few words and coupled with low volume, it is almost unusable. When switch off the speaker to normal phone-to-ear mode, the reception is back to normal and the audio is clear. I contacted the ebay seller and will see what he says.
It is a great film, I love mine. Just wish I could get some good custom ROMs on it like Paranoid Android.

Thanks clarifying on the factory reset. I'm sorry to hear about your eBay experience, I am always weary of ordering from there, I have had a lot of friends get ripped off. This goes to say I was also really worried about ordering this phone from china, but luckily everything went really well. I got this phone from Alibaba.com out of Hon Kong. Ordered 3 N9859 phones, there were no china apps in mine that I noticed, had all Google's apps as well as some other really cool ones like Microsoft Word. they came with phone folding covers, two batteries, head phones with built in radio antennas, wall charger, usb cable. I am extremely pleased with the quality of these phone, they are awesome!
Dreamerman, thanks for the Engineer menu number, that will come in handy. I will maybe try Mobileuncle Tools as well. I seen a video on how to root the N9859 phone, go to Youtube & type N9859, you will see "how to root my N9859", just read the steps and software to use under the video. That also sucks about your experience with the speaker phone, I will let you know how mine works once I am set up with a service provider and can actually get to talk on it.
I also went down to AT&T today to see if they could run this phone on their service, he thinks it's not going to be problem. He said a girl came in not to long ago and she had something similar, they were able to get hers going. So I am seeking out all my options, hopefully I will have the phone up and going shortly. I will write in and tell who I got the phone working through once its activated.
Root success with this tutorial.

Used driver ADB_usb_driver_120827 to connect to my device under debugging mode.
I also installed adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20130522 for good measure.

OK, I will check this out, I have an at&t gsm sim in my phone from Net 10 at the moment, but phone is not reading the card. For what ever reason I can't get into mobile settings to change APN settings. So this is why I am thinking I might need to root the phone, so I can open everything up for full access. The Engineer code did work great for the phone and I was able to go into some deeper settings, but didn't fix my problem. I have 3 of these phone we are trying to get up and going, so will probably root them all, seems to be a better way to go anyways so we can have better apps, etc..
Also, when you first get your phone and plug it into your computer, it says it needs driver "MT65XX Preloader Driver". Found websites that had this driver "4 Share.com". Do you have a reference on where to get this driver so my computer will recognize the phone and I can transfer files etc.. thanks.
You can get the driver from here.

Phone Working on NET 10 & Found Working Driver
Phone is working 100%! I was able to get the phone working on a pre-pay plan through "Net 10"., You can go down to your local Radio shack and purchase a "Net 10 Bring Your Own Plan" for $9.99. Inside the package comes a T-Mobile Sim, At&T Sim and an AT&T Micro Sim. I am using the standard size AT&T GSM Sim out of the package, I discovered you must insert the sim backwards verses how you put them in on our Samsung phones etc. So now you only pay $45.00 a month if you are enrolled on the auto-inrollment through thier website, otherwise it's $50.00 month. You get unlimited talk, text and I believe up to 2GB of data before they throttle you. (Throttling is when they cut down your data speeds) 2GB should be more than enough for your typical user though.
To get your N9589 working with your computer I found the working driver with complete instructions here: (they wont let me post outside links yet, so this is what you do) Go to your Google Search, and type in: "How to install MT/MTK 65xx USB driver on Windows 7" . One of the top websites that pulls up is: DroidChina.com . click into this page and you will see instructions and the driver download towards the bottom of the page.
With out instructions any driver will be useless to you, so important you know the proper steps how to install. This is a Chinese Forum, but I assure you its 100% legitimate and working. You will have to sign up with the Forum, but worth it. I spent 3 days just trying to find the right driver for this phone, every place I found it wanted you to download their software and all their crap in order to just download the driver. With this forum, you don't have to do that, nor worry about malware or viruses.NOTE: the only thing I did different on the install is, where is says steps 4, 5, 6, the picture sample below, I just click on the folder called: "usb_driver" and it installed perfectly. I tried there way but my browser box didn't show the same folders theirs did.
Hope this helps you guys, I had a hell of a time getting information out there about this phone. I am very happy with the Star N9589, it's truely an amazing phone with an awesome 5.7" screen! Everything works great including the speaker phone, which I know Dreameran here on this forum, was having a problem with on his.
My next mission is to find out how to do a nandroid backup.
Update: I used different apps from Play Store to attempt full nandroid backup but all failed. The best tool for me is the one I already have ie MTK Droid Root & Tools. See tutorial in link below. My packed backup zip file is 1,039,621 kb and unpacked is 3,100,708,864 kb.

My SanDisk 64GB Class 10 Mobile ULTRA Micro SD Micro SDXC Memory Card should arrive tomorrow. I bought it locally as I am sick of ebay fakes. I hope to have 2 partitions, one 32GB ext4 and the balance FAT32. Will be using either Gparted or free version of Partition Wizard (bootable ISO). After that I will install Link2SD.
UPDATE: I've done it. Partitioned my new shiny original 64GB C10 Sandisk micro sd card into 2 partitions; 15GB ext2 and balance FAT32 4kb cluster using MiniTool Partition Wizard bootable CD. Installed link2sd. Linked all non system apps to ext2 partition. All sweet. Spent several hours researching pros cons of ext2/3/4 and finally selected ext2.

Sorry to hear that. Risk of breaking ROM is the reason I maintained my stock ROM. Have you tried reset factory? There are sites (mostly Russian or Chinese) out there with stock ROM. If yours is already bricked, there is no downside. Try them all. Good luck. BTW, have you tried needrom?

[Q] Rooting Programs are freezing/looping/failing

The Carrier for my phones has replaced my Sprint LG Optimus S™, (REFURBISHED); the previous one that went bad was rooted for $29.95 back in late August, and I went back to those people to get this one rooted, and told them it was a replacement for the one they had already rooted, and they wanted me to pay again because they said this is a "different device". I just use this phone as a backup for my Coolpad Quattro II 4G 801ES I purchased last Month, and am not interested in paying another fee for this;
I know that firmware updates have included patches to stop the phones out there from being "rooted", so since this phone, though refurbished, came out in 2010, I need to know if there is/are any util(s)/app(s) that is/are current that can root this device (since it is old now, I realize that might not be anything out there, besides those people who charge to do it, and use remote access to do it). The specs are as follows:
Manufacturer: LGE
Model: LS670
Version: ZVJ.47B67B46
Android Version: 2.3.3 (GingerBread)
GingerBreak (v1.2) did not work, and z4root does not seem to be working either, as it makes things freeze up, and I really thought SuperOneClick (v2.3.3.0) would work, but when it reaches a certain point,
"... Step #7 WaitForDevice",
it stops there and goes not further ... I even updated the adb files, and still no go; SRSRoot did not work either, UI tried both "methods", SmartRoot & All Methods;
I also tried Towel Root, and that did not work either
I would like to have a hold of something that would work on Linux Systems, or the phone itself, however, I do have Windows 8 on my Laptop, and can use that if needed. I would also would like the opportunity of unrooting it in case I have to send it back to … my fortune with Smart Phone Devices has not been that great in the past few months; I even have to send the newly purchased Coolpad Quattro II 801ES to the distributor for I-Wireless.
Thanks,
Cliff
I was wondering if anyone here knows where I can grab GingerBreak v1.3, because the one I tried was v1.2, and according to a Video I watched, I need to use v1.3 of GingerBreak (and not v1.2) for Android 2.3.3;
It appears to be a daunting task to try and locate this specific version on the Internet via a Google Search ... some links are broken, some have removed v1.3 (yet left v1.2 available), I click on links that several windows pop-up, etc. and I cannot seem to manage to get a copy of GingerBreak v1.3, and it seems a never-ending journey trying to grab a hold of a copy.
Well, who knew a few years ago, that a few years later, there where going to be refurbished phones released for purchase in 2014 with Android 2.3.3, for example, by a Company like Kroger Stores, and it's I-Wireless online site ...

This here: have you tried different USB cables? enable usb debugging and get to Adb in terminal (assuming you have windows) and type ADB Devices, if some numbers pop up then it should be good. try re installing superoneclick and use on a different computer.
i dont think a gingerbreak had a v1.3 sotry using z4root.

Thanks for sharing ... I did run the adb devices command and it does show a 14 characters sequence of numbers and letters and then the word "device".
I do have the USB Debugging on (actually always do, for the most part). Though, I have never seen any instructions on whether USB Storage should be ON or OFF.
While I have a Desktop and Laptop computer, I only have access to Windows (8, a pre-installed edition) only my Laptop computer ... Windows XP is indeed on the Desktop computer, I have not been able to access it for a few years now (could be because of so many hardware changes made to the computer since I got that copy of Windows XP, and now it does not think it's a legit copy[?]). In the Apartment Complex I live in, non-Windows platforms are usually the ones the tenants use (Linux ones and FreeBSD).
As I mentioned in the first post, z4root will not work, and I'll add it really messed up things on the phone, it made it slag and slow, some programs froze up, others would come up with a white or black screen and be stuck on it until I rebooted the phone.
As for GingerBreak v1.3, it exists, (or did in the past, e.g. in 2011?); now I can't attest as to whether it's by the same author(s) as the previous versions, but one thing I been told (via YouTube Video & Web Pages) is that GingerBreak v1.2 will not work on GingerBread 2.3.3, GingerBreak v1.3 must be the one to use;
As for GingerBreak, in general, included in the instructions is that the SD Card needs to be "formatted", but what is not made clear, is to whether the "formatted" can have files/directories on it, or whether it should be completely empty and "formatted" ... won't be a problem either way, just need the right version of GingerBreak that worked on GingerBread 2.3.3 in the past.

Sorry about that i sware i saw you said z4root but couldnt find it and posted z4 anyway XD
as for the sdcard problem, if you do format it and plug it into your android phone, android OS (or the apps on the device) already put folders/files on the sdcard so thats no problem if they are there. as for v1.3, im not sure if it exists, it might but i could not find it. you can try to ask chainfire himself here on XDA. im sure v1.2 should work on 2.3.3. So we are trying to root your LG optimus right? im sorry i was a little confused reading it haha, you described it fine but was not sure which device you were talking about at times. i own a LG optimus V (Virgin mobile variant same thing.) and it was the best damn phone i have ever had!
i believe also windows 8 might be a problem, windows 8 sucks for development, if you can use xp or 7, that would be great, just ask a friend maybe.

I, as well as most people, agree that Windows XP & 7 is better than 8, but the Laptop was a birthday present. The "One Click Root" people rooted it (via remote) through that Windows 8, I don't mind donating, but the phone had to be replaced, and they wanted another pay again (after 6 weeks of already paying for the phone that was replaced);
The phone is a Sprint LG Optimus S™ (so just as the "V" for the one you had was for Virgin Mobiles, I guess the "S" for mine means Sprint, since they are the ones Kroger's I-Wireless uses for accessing Towers, per their agreements with Sprint). It's really just a "backup/secondary" phone now that I bought a Coolpad Quattro 4G 801ES, but I want the Optimus rooted to be able to move what apps I can to SD Card;
I noticed that the "One Click Root" people added some files onto the Windows 8 system, in the folders named:
"Minimal ADB and Fastboot",
"LG Electronics",
and maybe,
"Mozilla Maintenance Service" (the date of the Folder is close to the previous 2 mentioned folders).
I tried GingerBreak v1.2, and it did not work ... maybe I-Wireless or someone else built a firmware patch to stop it from working?
I'm aware that chainfire is here ... was going to see if I have to contact him as a last resort, since he seems so busy that it has made me wonder if he sleeps at all, or very little

since we are talking about the optimus S, it should be incredibly easy to root, my optimus v never got past android 2.2.1 and i was able to root it with gingerbreak, but im reading this here http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg...ls670zvd-zvh-100-automated-zvj-automated.html and it looks like you might have to downgrade first. do you also have a sdcard inserted? also Lg drivers? once you get rooted i will point you in the right direction. also (ie ZV8, ZV9, ZVC, ZVD) is a reference to what firmware you are on, it would be awesome to tell me what you have first and ill tell you want todo if you dont understand that guide.

My Sprint LG Optimus S™ LS670 phone has ZVJ, Android 2.3.3 ... I'm a member of Android Central and am acquainted with the page you referred me to (it's been loaded up in my web browser for some time now) ... it has does have me bouncing all over the place ... "if... then click here", "if... then click here", and so on. I'm just going to have to keep studying the pages until I get the order of things to do (like the downgrading it and you mention), unless you have an easier way in mind, but I'm going to have to wait a few days since I'm going to the hospital tomorrow and have a procedure done for a few hours;
Yes, I have the microSD (2gb) card that came with the phone, but as for the LG drivers, I don't know, but oneclickroot.com did install an "LG Electronics" into my Windows System, so perhaps I can run a program that will install those drivers[?]. The Optimus is already giving the notification that it is running low on space, and this was after attempting to update just the current default programs ... I guess they are larger than the default programs that came out on it back in 2010; one example, is that the "Android Market" was upgraded to "Google Play".
Fortunately, this is just a backup/secondary phone ... the Coolpad Quattro II 4G 801ES is my primary phone, and even it, has to be sent back to be fixed or replaced.
I'll be back

Thanks for the thoughts; the procedure went fine, but the doc found some tears (pronounced "tares") in my lungs and had me do a CT Scan the other day, and I haven't heard about that yet (I've been having "air hunger" (aka "shortness of breath") episodes for a very long time now).
Anyway, I need to send my Coolpad off to get it fixed or replaced, and I so need that Sprint LG Optimus S™ LS670 rooted, since I'll have to use it during the interim, and I want to be able to move the apps that can be moved to the SD Card ... even then, I'll still get "insufficient internal space" messages ... interesting that my Coolpad (not rooted) lets me move apps that the Optimus wouldn't, even rooted. That Optimus really did not need to be replaced (the tech support forgot to have me enter the phone number and MIN). I have discovered that Gingerbreak (versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1,2) cannot root Android 2.3.3;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194689
It is interesting to note that oneclickroot.com easily rooted it, so I know somehow, it can be rooted. The Web Page you referred me to seems complex for me, because it requires bouncing around hither and thither ... I don't mind doing the downgrade (though I'm not sure if oneclickroot.com did that or not[?]), it would be nice if there was one post (albeit there would be some redundancy to the other posts) that was specific for those with ZVJ firmware.
I see a DONATE TO ME on your posts. What do you distribute? BTW, I'm following you on Twitter now (I'm HodgesCliff) and Google+ (I'm Clifton Hodges there). I'll be happy to make a payment/donation to whoever can get, or has something that will root this phone for me, and a separate payment/donation when I am satisfied that Coolpad is functioning properly, and get it rooted ... it's just that oneclickroot.com wanted me to pay again for a phone that was a replacement (as already noted, not needed) for one they already rooted only a few weeks earlier; thus, I will not be having them root my Coolpad, so they may have lost $29.95 there, if I do everdecide to get the Coolpad rooted.
I'll see if I can get the LG Drivers installed, assuming that is why oneclickroot.com installed a "LG Electronics" folder of files.
Thanks,

Thansk, I really appreciate it ... As mentioned before, oneclickroot had installed some files on the Windows (8) Platform of my laptop, and one of those paths is
..\LG Electronics\LG United Mobile Driver
and there are some executables, "InstallUSB.exe", "InstallUSB9x.exe", and "InstallUSB64.exe", (the complimentary "UninstallUSB*.exe" files are there too), and I tried the "InstallUSB.exe" (at least), while my Optimus was plugged into it (with and without USB Strorage ON), and I don't know if that installed anything on the phone or not, but if it did, maybe some of these other programs will work now, we shall see ... there are 2 Virtual Driver files there ... VCOMM.VXD and Wdmmdmld.vxd.
Hooray!!!! Finally found a way to get it rooted ... No WINDOWS Platform need either
The Instructions (including the apk files to download) are at:
http://8coolgeek.blogspot.com/2014/09/simplest-way-to-root-your-android.html
The catch is here that it appears the you have to download "Superuser", well chainfire's "SuperSU" did not work for me, though I only tried once. Anyway, I suspect the "Pook Debug" apk might get booted off of Google's Play's Store once they find out this is a sneaked in program for the use of another program, but I imagine that if that happens, it will still be available elsewhere.
Trozzul, thank you so much for the efforts, I really appreciate that :good:
I'm a happy camper now ... I can't decide to transfer my files from the small 2GB card (which the space is now low) onto my 32gb which I was using for my main/primary Coolpad Quattro II 4G 801ES Smart Phone that has been sent off to be straighten up or replaced, or just go out and buy another larger SD Card.

postmarketOS Boot Issue - Surface 2 RT

*Issue solved, OS build meant for Surface RT, not Surface 2 RT. If someone could comment on how to delete a post, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.*
I've searched for this and found one dead, low-traffic thread that didn't provide any information. I'm attempting to use a USB to boot postmarketOS onto my Surface 2 RT, and have followed the instruction at openrt.gitbook to the point of booting the new OS. I formatted the USB in Windows cmd following these instructions:
diskpart
list disk
select disk X (Where X is the number assigned to the target USB drive)
clean
convert mbr
create partition primary
format fs=fat32 quick
assign
active
exit
I download the img.xz file (newest lxqt image from the postmarketOS surface rt wiki) on my android and use Zarchiver to get the .img file. I move that to my computer and write it to the USB using Rufus. After booting the Surface from USB, the following is displayed after a half hour or so of just the "Surface" logo:
Booting 'postmarketOS'
EFI stub: Entering in SVC mode with MMU enabled
EFI stub: Booting Linux Kernel...
EFI stub: Free memory starts at 0x82320000, setting kernel_base to 0x82300000
EFI stub: Using DTB from configuration table
EFI stub: Loaded initrd from LINUX_EFI_INITRD_MEDIA_GUID device path
EFI stub: Exiting boot services and installing virtual address map...
_
It sat there throughout last night and never progressed. I feel as though I haven't properly created the bootable USB, but I'm pretty new. Can anyone see where I went wrong from just this information?
Thank you.
Lol kinda funny you got that far without realizing which Surface you had

If you wanna learn more, or think you can contribute in any way, theres an Open RT Discord. That's where everyone is who got postmark/linux to work in the first place.
Currently they have a build of LineageOS recovery running and are working on Android.
Linux CAN be booted on the Surface RT 2, but its a WIP at the moment. A few things are broken Theres a guide in the discord as well.

I appreciate that. I've joined the discord, that's where I found my error. Those guys were quick and spot on with the replies. I get a good feeling from this community right off the bat, so I'll be sticking around to learn and hopefully get to a point where I have usable input.
It seems to me my best course for right now might be the win10. I've read that many find it painfully slow, but they were running it on rt. Do you know if that's also the case for the 2?

If you like numbers >8, sure go Windows 10. Windows 10 is still slower than Windows 8 even on the RT 2. Windows 10 can't install any apps that Win 8 can't. It has Microsoft Edge, but it's still no better than IE really, no youtube, slow loading, lots of pages broken, etc. It's basically unfinished beta software.
It's a fun little project and it's cool to see Win10 on the device, I had Win10 on my surface 2 for a few months, but i realized it's just not practical so I switched back to 8. I mainly use my surface for Splashtop, as a second monitor for my PC.
Not tryna discourage you, by all means flash Win10 to the tablet, just letting you know it's functionally the same and even a little worse than 8.1

That's good to know. The issue that got me started searching around is that there are some websites that I just can't access, example being dndbeyond. Kindle app has been gone for years which is why I put the tablet in the drawer in the first place. I'd just like to use it minimally, I decided yesterday to try and reload 8.1 because I can't even get the updates it should have (I've followed some troubleshooting tutorials to no avail). I like the tablet, I just wish it was still useful.

I wish it was too, especially for us with the Surface 2. The screen and speakers on this thing are still pretty dang good. Even on the first one with linux running okay, theres still no hardware acceleration for web browsing, so streaming sites like youtube or netflix won't work. But the small community in the discord seem to be making progress almost daily.
I'd legit hand over $50 to get a build of Android

Hello,
Thanks for the good review of win 10 on RT. Was a question in my head from a long time. Any idea for Linux/postmarketOS on surface RT?
Thanks

On the surface RT 1, Linux has gotten pretty solid. Even Android is available. Better than Windows for a couple usecases.
On the Surface RT 2 however, I'd stay away. Still no hardware acceleration on the RT2. So everything is slow and choppy in Linux. Not to mention USB doesn't work unless it's externally powered, so if you want any peripherals to work you need a powered USB hub. And still no Android builds.

How to upgrade Note 20 Ultra from...Android 5.1. Seriously.

I need help from someone a lot smarter than me. First time poster, but no stranger to rooting. (If I break some protocol, please correct me, I want to be a good citizen.)
Background (can be skipped)
I bought a Note 20 Ultra 5G (model #SM-N9860F) from a guy for a steal of a deal. Now I know why. Before buying we started it up and made a phone call, so I figured most everything else would be fine. Took it home and started messing with it, only to find it laggy and exhibiting other odd behaviors. So I went to check for updates before loading it up with my stuff.
But there was no Update button. I tapped "Software Info" and the next thing I saw made me read it three times. It showed, "Android version: 5.1."
Issues
So...
The phone functions but with lag and issues. SIM is recognized, then unrecognized. SIM cannot be used for data (though wifi is fine).
Not kidding, Kingo Root says it was able to root this Snapdragon phone. Root Checker Basic confirms it as rooted.
Using all the various key combinations posted all over the Internet, I cannot get into Download mode. I've tried for days.
Rebooting into Recovery shows Chinese options. (After many days of messing with it I finally found a way for it to show the English list...happy to share how I got there if anyone cares.)
The phone does connect to a Windows PC successfully via USB and can share files to internal and external memory.
Interestingly, the 500GB of internal memory only shows a fraction of it as available. Wondering if Android 5.1 just can't recognize that much space.
Bottom line
I am unable to get into Download mode. When I do get to where I think Download mode should be, the green Android guy is lying down with the words "No command" underneath. Therefore I can't use Odin, or a paid service, or Samsung Smart Switch...even tried the old Kies, since it has Android 5.1 on it. ALL of them require me to get into Download mode, and it just won't go.
Plan B?: I've heard repeatedly that rooting a Note 20 Ultra is (nearly?) impossible. Since multiple apps on my device insist I successfully rooted it, I was hoping I could use the TWRP app (it's installed) to flash something that could help. But I don't know what that would be, or if it would help at all. TWRP doesn't recognize the .zip, .tar, or any other files I've found and copied to the device. Maybe it's looking for a .img? I'm just not sure, and I don't even know what to look for.
Additional info
I've attached a few screen shots and photos.
I'd be ever so grateful for anyone's guidance. Again,
How can I get into Download mode? Seems that would get me back on the paths I know better.
And/or what can I flash using TWRP on what appears to be a rooted device? Would that even help?
Thank you!

Sounds like you got what you paid for, it's probably a fake Note20 Ultra.
From what I can tell, the model & build numbers conflict, they're from different models of the Note 20 Ultra, that's why I think it's a fake.
Even the model number doesn't look right, it has a hybrid Chinese/European model number........

Hi Koliosis,
Yeah, thanks, that has crossed my mind, and that's why I posted those images. If it's fake it's a really good one, but I am aware I could have to chalk that up to experience.
Still, why in the world would a fake have Android 5.1 on it? And it works(-ish)! Isn't that still bizarre? Anything that can be done to force it into Download mode or to flash something with TWRP to at least get an OS from the modern era?
Thanks again...

There should be several threads/tutorials here that show how to flash firmware using Odin (& of course, includes how to get into download mode).
Before you try that out, have you tried to use Samsung's Smart Switch program on your PC?
Given the information you've posted,it's difficult to determine which model you have, which makes matters worse since we don't want to make a bad situation worse.
I'd start with the Samsung Smart Switch, hopefully it'll be able to determine the make of your phone & flashing stock firmware should be a breeze. (If it's indeed a genuine Samsung Device).

Yes sir, and that's my problem. I've rooted and changed ROMs on a dozen devices or more in the past (thanks to XDA!!), always using Odin. But this phone simply will not go into Download mode at all. Using every key combination I can find I either wind up with the Chinese recovery selections I mentioned or I get that "No command" screen with the Android lying on its back.
So far I've tried these PC apps:
Odin (several versions)
Smart Switch
Kies
FixPPO (https://android.imyfone.com/android-issues/android-no-command-error/)
DroidKit (https://www.imobie.com/android-system-recovery/fix-android-no-command-error.htm)
Some, like Odin and the paid options, require Download mode - which isn't working for me - so those apps can even tell I've plugged a phone into the USB port.
Just to put it out there, when the phone is booted into the OS and attach it to the PC, Windows recognizes it's connected but Smart Switch does not. That supports your point that it may not be a Samsung device, but I wondered if it could also have something to do with Smart Switch coming after 5.1 was old.
I just wondered if somebody who didn't know what they were doing somehow downgraded this phone to Android 5.1 before I accept it as a full loss. Still hoping...

Makes since you tried Kies (given the stated Android version).
Can you download/sideload any apps that may help identify the phone (& check for Knox 0x0) such as this one:
Phone INFO+ (SAM) - Apps on Google Play
All-in-one INFO and TOOLS for Samsung devices.
play.google.com
AIDA64 - Apps on Google Play
Hardware and software information utility for Android devices
play.google.com
I wish I had more to offer,it's been years since I've dealt w/a rooted Samsung (Note 5).
Hopefully, others will chime in & offer a solution.
FWIW,Definitely following this thread, I'm interested in how things work out, hopefully for the better.
Aah i made an account just to respond to you
i had an iPhone 7 Jet Black replica with android 5.1 once upon a time, same symptoms- 8GB actual storage but will show 128GB when connected to PC
So here are my two cents: These devices won't be recognized by samsung tools as they are not having motherboards made by samsung. I would recommend that you check actual specs from AIDA64 and you will find out which company has made the motherboard or device, mine had strange MediaTek processor though. And hopefully you will find some chinese websites where people are talking about how to flash firmwares in these phones but i recommend not to do that, i had to lose my device as it got bricked.
Well, that's exactly why I come here. I'd never come across that AIDA64 app, and I've attached screen shots. I've never heard of a "Kirin," but sure enough, it's Huawei. Dang it!
@priteshsolanki, hate to hear about your experience. Thanks for the heads up.
So...does Huawei have a Smart Switch equivalent, lol? And by the way, even if I got this working, would Huawei have enough hardware in this bugger to be able to listen in and send data back to Mother China?? I don't know how that kind of thing works...

This is strange, i think The AIDA64 app is being fooled here too! To find which company has made it, Its gonna be same experience as finding father of an orphan child which just had permanent memory loss
Its not Kirin, its not huawei.. why?-
So its showing ARMv7 32bit processor, which is definitely not Kirin 1020. because kirin 1020 is a high end processor itself too and uses 5nm technology and Cortex A78 architecture! (While yours is showing stone age 28nm with Cortex A7)
Then there is Platform MT6799. When i look up for that, its again showing totally different company- MediaTek chipset "Helio X30 (MT6799)" which is a deca core processor but what we got here in your details is a Quad core processor.
What we know about your processor:
- its Cortex A7 @1301 MHz and has 28nm manufacturing process
(can't be 5G at any cost)
- From above details it seems like an ancient processor which came out somewhere around 2012, probably thats why its running 5.1.
- The performance is equivalent to high end Android Jellybean device, but definitely not suitable for using in 2022
- The storage and RAM amount shown there are just to fulfill fantasies, dont expect it to be reliable. Its probably a 1 or 2GB Ram with 4 or 8GB storage.
- The software in the phone is really fantastic, i have never thought that a clone can be so perfect that even Apps like AIDA64 will have a hard time finding the facts!
Now coming to the main questions:
1) Can it be upgraded?
90% no based on research i have done in google, this phone is totally non existent for google. for remaining 10% you can expect the rom maker to contact you in DMs after seeing your thread here and offer you an upgrade lol
2) Should you use any file syncing tools with it?
Quick answer: Syncios app is your best bet to sync data between phone and back, but only luck can help you find actual firmware of the device
Slightly long answer: So according to our findings all these data shown in phone settings fake, and syncing apps back in 2011-12 i think its going to give you hard time finding a working one. Android 5.1 in todays time is not something you should be using as daily driver for sure. I suggest you to just treat it like a toy.
About my iPhone 7 back in the day, i bought that one for some 60USD but it was worth it, had some kind of apple music app which never required login but was able to stream any songs for free. so ive used that one out for music only.
I really wish there was a better way to put it, but you can try one last dry hope at needrom website to see if they have any details about this device.

Like has been said, sounds like you got a fake, Software info is one of the first things I would have checked before buying, not after you have bought it and then start having issues. Unfortunately you only really have yourself to blame. like is quite often said if the deal "seems to good to be true" there are reasons why.
@samorgs60, you are very right. I've taken many chances like this one on many electronic devices, and to my recollection, this is the first time I got burned. It's kind of like speeding: I don't always obey the speed limit to the letter (number?), so in the past when I got what I believe was an unfair speeding ticket - I was accused of going faster than I was - I dealt with it my accepting it as a balance in the universe for all the times I should have been busted.
@priteshsolanki, what a catch! Wow. That is kinda amazing, and would explain why it has 5.1 on it. I'm actually astonished at the quality of the device in every way, other than the obvious.
So I hate to ask this, but...isn't it true that carriers (I won't mention mine by name here) make offers for value against a new phone if your current phone simply 1) turns on and 2) does not have a cracked screen? That kinda seems to describe what I've got right now. Not interested in misleading on purpose, but what is the likelihood this would qualify as a trade-in? If they took it initially, what's the likelihood of it coming back to haunt me (the carrier contacting me about it not being a Samsung)?
Really appreciate the help, guys!
It sucks that you got a fake. If you paid with PayPal or Credit, I'd file a claim/dispute and try to return for a refund. Carriers usually log the IMEI of trade ins and if it doesn't match the model or is blacklisted in any way, the trade will be denied.
