Hi, just wondering if anyone knows what will happen if I hole punch a tiny hole on top of the front s view cover just right next to the ear piece speaker. So I can see if there's a notification light for missed calls/sms etc while the cover is close. I just want to make sure that the s view function will still work if there is a tiny hole there. I'm not sure if there is some sort of mechanism whatever under the material for the s view function to work properly. Has anyone done this before? Thanks in advance.

The light is located right on the edge of the phone. It seems very very close to the edge which makes it easy to determine where it is. I just need to make sure I have the phone plugged in and charging so I can see the light is on. Then go from there. But before I do this I need to make sure it's not going to stuff up the s view functionality.

Ok, this picture (taken from this LINK
shows exactly where is HALL SENSOR is located, therefore if you "drill" the hole by notification led light nothing will change in s-covers efficiency.

Ok, now that makes sense. I did wonder how this feature of the cover works. Thanks for the post.
So I've seen a video where even with the s view still sort of open (not Fully shut) , the phone still shows the s view window. Look at the led then, before making a regrettable mistake
Does the LED even come on with the cover closed?
I have thought of taking a standard 2-hole paper punch and punching a single hole over where the LED is.
I got the S-View cover free with my handset, but I am not crazy about the flip cover. I might just decide to sell it, so I don't want to ruin it yet.
The only thing stopping me from punching the hole is that I am worried that the layers will start to de-laminate around the small hole.
Please post a picture if you do something similar.

That's what I was thinking too. You'd hate to drill a hole only to realize that the light doesn't come on when the case is closed, lol!
Why not have the screen turn on whenever there's a new notification? The big S View hole is there for a reason.

If its anything like the S3, its comes on but dimmer than usual. Must check the light sensor to determine its brightness.

Ok, so I drilled a hole using a paper hole puncher right on the notification light. It was pretty hard because the cover had some type of plastic inner lining. It looks like the plastic see through window extends all throughout the front cover top to bottom. Nevertheless I managed to drill a nice almost perfect circle. It doesn't look that bad. Plus it's just a case and I just want more functionality out of it.
The issue is however, when the notification light goes on and starts blinking, it turns off automatically after 30 seconds or so. I've used a few different apps to control the notification light like "light flow", "light manager" and there's another one but I can't remember the name.
Without the cover on, the notification light would blink until whenever you set the app to stop the blinking or when you open and acknowledge it. Now we all know that this is the normal operation of the notification light.
What's puzzling is when the cover is on, the light would only blink for no more than 30secs. I think there is some sort of screen/device sleep mode that the phone goes through when the cover is closed.
Anyways, it was a worth while experiment. I will not be using the cover for now, until someone figures out how to make the notification stay on while cover is closed.

Sounds like the HAL sensor disables the LED, which makes sense.
Have you tried an app called noLED I think it is, basically gives you a tiny envelope on the screen when you have notifications. Doesn't impact battery much since there's no backlight. Quite customisable too.

I punched a hole in my Sview cover the day i got it. What i used was a standard belt hole punch. Put a little extra cardboard underneath the cutter as to not scratch my cover all up. Here is my only point of advice. If you dont hit the LED area perfect it wont be nearly as bright or noticeable when its flashing. It does still blink when the cover is closed i can confirm that.
I tried NoLed with my note 3 and s view case and it doesnt work

I have asked this elsewhere but have yet to determine what this is. It's right underneath the camera lens. It looks like an LED but there is no "Flash" function in camera program. It also looks like a light sensor for the screen backlight. But it seems like an unusual location to place such a sensor. Being on the bottom, or back, it would only receive indirect light and at many times get unintentionally covered up by ones fingers while holding the handset with keyboard extended. I also thought it could have been a sensor for the camera. But it has no effect on cameraboperation (eg.. autofocus, white balance etc). Any ideas? Thanks
It's the mute button when the phone is placed face down.
You must have lost the button or something, since there is a pic of a mic on it, but if the button is gone, I could see how you would think it was a sensor of some sort.
That's just a piece of translucent plastic that goes over the real mute
lighted-switch w/c is in the phone body. The screen backlight sensor and proximity sensors are up front by the earpiece.
Thank you! I would never have figured.. or even guessed that. Once you said ''button'' , I went to push it ....sure enough lol. There is an image on it, but its too small to make out. Bummer, I was hoping for an LED thanks again.

I can make out the picture quite easily. You may want to consider glasses. I'm not poking fun really, I can see a traditional broadcast mic with a slash through it, suggesting it's mute capabilities.
I think he's looking at it with the cover off, in which case it does kinda look like a sensor of some kind.
So I recently replaced my headphone jack and speaker recently using parts I ordered from Parts Universe b/c my headphone jack stopped working after I had dropped my Captivate face down on my asphalt driveway...
Anyways, my headphone jack works great now. Only problem... about a day after I had replaced the headphone jack I noticed a dark brownish/orange splotch in the top left corner of my screen that comes down about 1/2" from the top of the screen and then back up to the top of the screen.
Did I mess something up when changing out my parts? I have taken the phone apart before just to see if I could do it, and nothing happened... I never ran into any problems when taking it apart/putting it back together... Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?
I have attached a screenshot of my homescreen with some editing in Paint to show what it looks like. It is transparent, almost like the screen is half-dead in that area.

Here it is. It also seems to be spreading... was not like this a couple of days ago...
I was going to pass this up because I couldn't tell what was added in Paint and what's wrong, but thought I'd tell you that. How about an unmodified screenshot?
Also did you solder the new connector on with the board in the phone, getting the screen hot in that area?

Well I would post an unmodified screen shot if the defect was shown in it. But it's basically what I drew in, the area outlined in orange is the border of the splotch. It's like if you have a damaged monitor, but take a screenshot of your desktop it won't show that the monitor is damaged, it will only show what the desktop looks like normally.
There was no soldering involved in replacing the headphone jack and front speaker. I just stuck it in there and plugged it into the motherboard. That's why this is so puzzling... Just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar problem?
Maybe I should try and re-install my defective headphone jack and see if the problem still persists...

Sounds like your problem right there. To me, it sounds like your screen is physically borked (i.e. you need a new screen), but I'm not knowledgeable enough to say that is the case for sure. It might be helpful if you can grab a camera and upload a few pictures, both with the screen on and off, so we can better see what's happening.

Although I dropped my phone over two months ago and the screen was perfectly fine after (I did have a silicone case on it, so the extra width saved the screen), not a single scratch. This splotch came into existence after I replaced my headphone jack this week.

Just another guess - it's possible that the screen separated partially from the gorilla glass covering it. That opening could be causing the brown splotch you're seeing - almost like a bubble in between a screen protector and the screen.
could it possibly be a thumb-print inside the screen? In taking it apart did you ever come in contact with the backside of the screen. The oils from your skin can heat up under there and cause the discoloration.

That does sound possible... I will take it apart again tonight and give it a thorough inspection.
It's really not that bad, only b/c it's in the corner, but it does really bother me. It looks terrible on anything with a white background though, like when you browse the internet or some parts of the marketplace.
Thanks for the responses guys. I will report back with my findings.
So I took everything apart last night again, replaced my new headphone jack with the old part and the splotch is still there... so it's not the replacement part I got.
All of the components look good, there's no dust or dirt anywhere, nothing rattles when I shake it... I don't know what could have happened...
I don't think I'm going to be buying a new screen for it, they run about $150 and for that price, I might as well get a new phone.
I'll just have to deal with it.

Try to have it replaced for free. It's a knowed phenomenon in electronics of all kind. Your replacement of the headjack might have just exacerbate a existing problem.

how did you obtain this captivate? if you are not the original purchaser you do not have a warranty. and also if you are sim unlocked you had to root to do that which voids the warranty so before you send it to sammy relock the sim restrictions and odin one click back to stock

It really looks like layer separation to me. As if the glass is pulling away from the digitizer or something.
I guess it is spreading, since it looks much larger than first described...

Ok, so how do I fix it? Nothing looks loose or out of place to me. Everything fits snug and is screwed in, not loose or too tight.
Maybe just the way I snapped the outer plastic shell to the digitizer? Last time I put it together I snapped it in from top to bottom. Maybe I should try bottom to top?

If it is layer separation, I don't think there is a way to fix it. I believe the two layers are most likely put together with a special adhesive by machine. The discoloration is probably the adhesive being exposed to elements that it was not designed to come in contact with. I suspect this would have happened regardless of your activities, unless you inadvertently pried away the corner of the glass in your maintenance.
If you didn't break any "do not remove" seals while you were working on it, you may be able to get it repaired under warranty as a factory defect...
Yep. That's not going back together. Most likely it's from flexing a corner out to hard. Fixing it would require 3M Vikuiti type material. Well, that's from LCD backing. Maybe a polorizor for the front. Take it all apart, clean the surfaces in a cleanroom. That kinda thing. Not fun.

All because of a stupid broken headphone jack...
Hi, I recently got a TF300 and so far I love it (for the most part). I am still on the stock ROM and am thinking of rooting and going custom soon, I just cant be bothered with the backup and restore really.
What I'd like to know is if the build quality on everyone's tab is the same.
I have a blue one, with the keyboard dock and I bought from Comet in the UK.
When I use the pad un-docked, there is a noticeable creakyness to the edges of the bezel. On the right side of the screen, and the bottom - just where the dock alignment arrow is, i feel as if I can push the edges up and down like a sponge. Its almost as if the screws arent tightened enough to hold it together properly. It is not a major issue, but it does really bug me because I paid £400 for this gadget.
I also notice that there is a dip in the keyboard, around the letters JKL.
Please tell me if other people have the same thing or if I'm the only one, because if that is the case i'd feel inclined to return and exchange it.
Many Thanks

Confirming the creakyness on the bottom edge, near the usb port. Not quite like a sponge, but it's noticeable during regular use. Also, if you look really carefully you can see between the black bezel and the silver margin, right under the dock arrow. It doesn't seem worth it to return the tablet over something like this, but it's a little bit disappointing at this price range.

I can confirm this, mine has had the same creakyness. Only mine had it on the top and left side. It annoyed me alot. What i eventually did to fix it might not be for everyone though. I took of the back-cover and used some household masking-tape in very thin slices around the areas on the edges inside of the back.cover. No more creakyness
But I have also read about some people turning theirs inn and getting a new one without the creaky back-cover.
I was also slightly disappointed that there is some creaky movement on the casing of my TF300T. It almost feels like I could pop the back off at the top right corner.

I don't feel any creakyness. It must be my girlie arms. No offense to girls.
I certainly can feel the creekyness between the back plate and the screen. It turns out, the back plate is EASILY removable and is only held on by a few clips, no screws. You can actually take it off without voiding your warantee , the void sticker is on a sheet of copper beneath the back plate over the cpu, nand chip etc.
I actually made an aluminum plate for mine, at a machine shop I work at.
I think the flimsyness is a result of using plastic for the back plate. I expect some time soon to see some manufacturers start selling decent metal plates for the tablet. Overall I am pleased with the build quality though. If your corners seem especially loose try gently squeezing them against the back plate. They might be slightly popped out.

Is there any tutorial that shows how to take off the back plate? If so, are there any screws under there that hold on the front of the tablet? It just feels as if a couple of screws might be loose that need tightened up... kinda like what ppl were complaining about on the Nexus 7... and ppl managed to find a way to tighten them up!

The white one i settled for is perfect.

I thought this creakyness was a bit of exaggeration but it is definitely there. I have another cheap tablet and it does not feel like this... also the widescreen format makes me feel the screen is too narrow when reading in portrait mode. Kind of having buyer's remorse.

Hmm yeah that is strange... unfortunately the store I bought it from only sells a blue one, and if I were to return it now I would only get a gift card as it's outside the 14 day refund period.
I would want to return it really, I am really happy with the tablet on the whole, its just a little disappointing when you undock it and hold it in your hand, the edges of the screen dont feel solid and sturdy, its kinda like what people have been complaining about with the screen popping issues on the nexus 7.
If I were to open the backplate and tighten up all the screws around the edge would this help any?
btw, mine is C6O serial number
Mine is white, and I have that creakiness. But I don't regret it, this tablet is awesome!

Sure, here's a picture of the top of the back-cover. You kinda have to feel around the corners of your device to see where you need to "fill" inn with some masking-tape so it stops moving. Also take note of where the plastic clips that holds it to the screen is, so you dont block them.

Any tape will do really, I just used masking-tape because it's very thin and very easy to take off if it didn't work or if I used too much. It takes very little tape to make a difference.

I just used brown parcel tape as thats all I had laying around, and just doubled it up in the areas that were the worst, as its very thin. All in all im very impressed. Maybe Asus should have thought of this before it left the factory! lol

Does your phone's screen turn off and stay off during calls and for 30 seconds after calls, no matter what you do? Have you sprayed 15 cans of compressed air into the speaker grill and it's still not working?
If so, you've got a fouled proximity sensor. :crying:
What's a promixity sensor and where is it?
This is the doohickey that tells if your phone is pressed up next to your face. If it is, this thingamajig turns the screen off so your cheek doesn't press buttons and so your screen doesn't use up lots of battery while you're not looking at it.
It's located right next to the front speaker grill. Those 2 little circles to the right of the speaker? That's the sensor. Make sure the glass in front of it is clear and clean as well. If you have any dirt or grime there, like sweat residue or make up from your cheek built up there, it will foul the sensor as well. You might get away with just wiping the front glass clean to fix this. If you can't see dirt on the front though, it's inside. You will have to open it up.
On TouchWiz roms you can disable the proximity sensor during calls in the phone app settings. It works, but then your screen stays on during calls. (And if you use an AOSP ROM you know there isn't an option in the phone app to disable the proximity sensor during calls. So then you feel like you're really screwed.)
But good news! It's easily repairable. I just did this myself the other day and wanted to let everyone know this is not difficult. But it does help to have someone walk you through it.
What went wrong....
The problem is a bad seal surrounding the top speaker (earpeice). There is supposed to be a seal around the border of the speaker internally to prevent dust and debris that sneaks into the speaker grill from moving into other areas of the phone. That little seal stinks. So dust gets into the speaker grill and finds it's way into the proximity sensor which is right next to the speaker, and is in fact built into the same housing as the speaker.
This is what the whole unit looks like up close.
The speaker is on the left, the proximity sensor is on the right. This is how it is oriented when you are facing toward the front of the phone.

The first thing to try is the compressed air thing if you haven’t already. It's the quick and easy solution that might solve your problem. Just spray compressed air into the earpeice speaker grill and it might clear out the dust. It works most of the time, but eventually there will be too much dust built up inside the phone to simply blow it out anymore. So you'll have to take it apart and repair it. The good news is that it's a really simple 15 minute process.
Disasembly of the phone
I suggest using this guide to dissemble the S4.
It's the best video disassembly guide I found online. It shows you how to COMPLETELY dissemble the device. You won't need to do that. You will jus tneed to take a few peices off to get to the sensor we need to clean. But it's still a great guide, and it'll come in handy later if you need to replace the screen or something more major like that.
That guide shows you all the tools you will need. But just so you have them ready, you will need a tiny (and I mean tiny) Phillips head screwdriver, a tiny flat head screw driver to use a a VERY GENTLE pry bar, and a plastic peice to use as a separator for the plastic housing of the phone. Do not use metal for separating the plastic parts on the phone. You will damage them. (All of this will make sense when you watch the video)
Do everything in the video up to the 3:30 mark. That will get the phone housing removed. You can then skip to the 7:35 mark and then watch until 8:35. (In between shows a lot more disassembly than you will need. Things like removing the SD Card housing and stuff)
The actual cleaning of the sensor
You now have removed the front facing camera, the proximity sensor, and the ear speaker. Almost certainly you will find a lot of dust built up in those three units. Clean them with a dry q-tip. Then spray them and the holes they came out of in the phone THOROUGHLY with compressed air. For me, I found the bulk of the dust was stuck to the phone housing itself, not the sensors that I took out. So clean the phone thoroughly too.
Get it all nice and clean in there again. DO NOT USE ANY CHEMICALS! It's just dust in there, not engine grit or something that needs to be dissolved. Less is more.
Your problem should now be fixed. It's just a matter of putting everything back together. Just reverse the steps. Everything pops back into place really easily. Or you can go to the end of the video and watch the film maker put the entire device back together. But really, just reverse the steps. It's super easy.
Now the bad news is that you didn't fix the underlying problem. That means dust is still going to creep it's way back in there over the next 6 months or so. That means you might have to do this again in 6 months. But as you now know, it's a 10-15 minute process so it's not a big deal to do this every few months.
How to test the repair without making numerous phone calls where you keep pulling the phone away from your face...
I use this app from Google Play. It's free. It works. There are a bunch of others that do something similar. They should all work. This will show you when you proximity sensor is active, which will happen when you put your finger over the sensor.
When you start that app it should show your sensor reading as 8.0 (Big number in the middle of the screen. You can't miss it.). When you put your finger over the sensor it will go to 0.0. If your sensor is dirty or broken it will stay on 0.0. If it's working properly it will go back to 8.0 instantly when you move your finger.
Using this app I run my finger over the sensor pretty quick and it shows me that the sensor was only active for about 50-60 miliseconds. When it does that, I know its working properly.
Suggestion for a long term cure....
You could try to put a piece of very thin foam in behind the speaker grill to trap more dust. I haven't tried it yet, but I did consider that. If you give it a shot, let the world know how it worked out. Remember though I'm just giving an idea here. If you break your phone somehow when trying to physicly modify it, it's not my fault.
Don't try to put a peice of plastic or something behind the speaker grill to toally block out the dust. That WILL work, but it will also greatly muffle the earpeice sound and seriously lower the max volume.
And bookmark that video in case you need to take something else out of the phone later! It's EXTREMELY well done!
Hope this helps someone else! :highfive:
thx
very good tutorial
Some time ago i figured it my self and i disassembled my S4 and cleaned the sensor, it was 43 before cleaning and now it is 12-15 (no proximity value), but it is still bad compared to S3 or S4 Active - they have 0
Samsung messed up this and now i cant even go for warranty beceuse of %#%#%#% knox 0x1
And the worst part is that i will have to still buy another Samsung because their hardware is always the best, camera, cpu, battery... i dont want Xperia with crappy camera and non replacable battery, i dont want thc because of worse camera, i dont care about aluminium body - i always use Cases anyway.
Last time i cleaned the sensor it was fine for about month or two.. its bad, i dont want to disassemble my S4 every month...
Tell me, how can i sell it with knox 0x1 ? i need some money back from this crap to buy S5 or Note 3
@Kriomag: My black Note 3 also got the same dust problem...
And I 've been cleaning it (by disassemble) several times already...
I'm gonna try the foam thingy or maybe silicone seal to fix the speaker seal....
51 ms is min for my s4 is that good ?never tried to clean it ..
Great post, thanks for the tips!

Yes. Using that sensor finder app I get around 50 at best when I run my finger over the sensor as fast as I can.
Basically 50ms is as fast as you can run your finger over the sensor. That is what the app is really measuring.
That tells you your sensor is registering things without delay.
Fixing broken proximity sensor
Hold the phone by the upper edges with both fingers and press hard. Watch ADC values (dial *#0*# first to get to hardware test first of course).
See the ADV values go down to 50-55. Let it sit for a few minutes. See if they stay there. That's it. It is not the dust.

This is true.
Had tried a lot of methods, cleaning, echo 0 and 1, etc.
Doesn't work at all.
I even remove my screen protector for testing this, which at first I thought it's because my screen protector is dirty. (Half true, it's better after I removed it)
If you had disassemble your S4 previously, you will know that the motherboard is missing 1 screw.
Conclusion:
Issue is with upper edges. If you press hard enough, it will work normal.
For me the app "proximity fix" from play store fixed the problem...

Yea and it covers the front. With the concerns of softer materials may be a good choice when in transport.

I also don't usually buy flip cases like that but I think it would be perfect for the Note 7 since it's such a massive smartphone.

My note 4 is bigger, but im digging this case.
I would try it.
After reading horror stories about these types of cases when I had my note 3, I stay away from these style of cases. By horror stories I mean people saying dirt and sand would get in there and scratch the screen when you closed the cover.

If y'all like this Case, you should at least check this one out:

I'm using it, and it's great. There's only a couple colors, but I'm really loving it so far.
oh, and it's much less expensive.
I got this case a few days before launch and Used it yesterday and the day I got the phone. Nice case, stylish. Kind of worried about it scratching tho because it is shiny plastic. Also I definitely recommend a screen protector with any such case

Best part about the removable battery is that the flip covers didn't add a lot of bulk since they would be part of the battery cover.
I love the clear view flip cover case, and it rarely gets any fingerprints on it. Shows all the notifications on the cover. Samsung redesigned it from last year's model, and it can no longer scratch your phone due to a new raised lip on the inside. I have the blue cover on a blue phone, and it's really beautiful, the back of the phone almost looks like it doesn't even have a cover on it, yet it never gets any smudges on it.
I got the black version of this case. The time and other bits that were visible under the case had this "glow" around them ... ie. they made the clock and the rest look fuzzy. I didn't think I could deal with it so I returned it
Also, the always on display of the Note 7 doesn't work with it. I kinda like this feature of the Note 7.
I'm digging the case but it has its downsides. Not much functionality apart from viewing notifications (tapping it tells you to open the cover to view it) and snoozing and dismissing alarms. No AOD, although, i understand why, because the clock is in a static position. But what's bugging me the most is the background color. I can accept the rest but not this. You'd think it would be black but its not. Its grey instead and lights up the whole screen making the magnet and the strip that connects the flap to the rear very noticeable in indoor lighting and in the dark. In darkness you can even see the inner rubber lip because the screen is lit. Being an SAMOLED screen why couldn't they keep it pitch black and only light up the clock and notification pixels?? I came from a HTC 10 with ice view case and that was so flush and better looking than this and that phone has a LCD!
Still rocking the clear view but I really wish it would just have a black background that's all. You can't seem to notice it in video reviews or outdoors as much but once you see it yourself, you'll know what I'm talking about.

The blue version does not show the magnetic strip or the side flap at all when it is lit.
Only one disappointment on this case. No AoD. Maybe Samsung can modify the software to provide AoD also with the case closed.

Really? No silhouette of them? Wonder why it's happening with my black one then. I've read about it happening on the s6 edge sections too and that was with a blue case if not mistaken. I've ordered a UAG Magma anyways. I want the AOD and off screen memo.

I purchased the gold color case and I don't have the problem you have. The background of the screen is black. Not grey. And I like the case as it felt solid. I like the edge of the case with silicone around it. And i bought OEM screen protector to protect the screen, because my Note 4 S view cover scratches my screen last time. The Screen protector works very well too, not peeling up at the side.

Damn that ain't cool (for me) lol. I like the case too apart from the background color, makes it look a little cheap to be honest and I'm using the samsung screen protector as well. I've tried all the possible display options to see if it was one of them causing it. Reset the phone too, took it out and back into the case and same thing. I'll see if I can get some pictures up to show.
Edit: You can see in this picture I googled how it looks to me. Notice the silhouette of the flap and the magnet. You can also tell the whole screen is lit coz its plenty bright and if I lift the cover just a little bit to peek under I can see the background is grey
