Hello. It happens to be that I also have a HTC Wildfire / Buzz to play with, S-OFF'd and (of course) rooted.
*BUT* I can flash kernels to it and test them even with stock/bloatware-removed ROM.
That allows me to overclock it and test other features.
Does any of the custom roms for ChaCha use a custom kernel that can be overclocked?
Can any of that kernels packaged as a flashable zip?
Thanks all.
cm9
the cyanogenmod9 ROM can (I think)
download the rom and flash it through cwm
Thanks. That could be the easiest to do. But I'd like to flash only the kernel.
Well... I've been researching about this.
I made a copy of the boot.img working on my ChaCha.
Then I could get the boot.img included in a OTA update by Orange carrier.
And then I downloaded SuperOSR and got the boot.img there.
Now by using fastboot boot, I tested the OTA and the SuperOSR kernels, not by flashing, and not touching anything else, except for wiping cache partitions.
SuperOSR directly doesn't boot. This is expected, anyway, being based on CM.
The OTA kernel boots, but WiFi doesn't work. The rest of devices seems to.
There are several things I noticed as differences, I'm showing:
Code:
original boot.img: 3407872 bytes -- 2.6.35.10-gf782337 [email protected] #1 Mon Oct 31 18:48:21 CST 2011
OTA boot.img: 2643968 bytes -- 2.6.35.10-g1643b58 [email protected] #1 Thu Mar 29 02:27:20 CST 2012
So I want now to compile my own kernel, by using the tutorial shown here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748297) and trying to make it boot as is, and then trying to mod it by including new governors and over/under clocking.
And all of this with stock ROM.
Let's see what happens...
are there any oc kernels for chacha?

Has anybody on here been able to compile/boot their own evo kernel? I have been able to
compile a kernel just fine but given the limitations of fastboot on our spl i cannot test the
image using "fastboot flash zimage zImage". I have tried packing the kernel into a boot
image then signing and flashing rom. This got me stuck at the 1st boot screen. I have also
tried to unpack and repack the stock boot image without making any edits and that fails at
the first boot screen as well. So I believe there is definately something different to the
procedure of flashing or creating boot images.
So does anybody have any advice? maybe a fix? If anyone is able to boot a custom kernel please send me a pm!
haven't had a chance to test out the kernel ... i know in flipz supersonic .6 rooted ROM a kernel is flashed in the update.zip file. not sure what kernel this is since the OTA update from .1 to .6 the boot.img didnt change, md5sum the same. i didnt compare the md5sum of the boot.img hes using to the RUU boot.img .
i know the froyo ROM on here flashes a boot.img, which i think remember reading was compiled from toast's kernel source. i'd imagine mainly with a modified init.rc ...
hope that helps a bit and gives you some motivation its possible although the two examples i've given are from toast and flipz who both appear to be ahead of the curve!
once the htc kernel source hits i plan on kernel compiling ...
To cut a long story short, it seems the HBOOT on my Sensation is the latest one and is not compatible with Revolutionary, doesn't even get upto the point where it's meant to generate the beta key, just says HBOOT isn't supported.
Short of jamming wires into my phone, it seems I can't get S-OFF on the current HBOOT, but I have got the official HTC Dev bootloader unlock working fine and my phone is currently rooted on the stock ICS ROM.
However I want to install CM9 on my phone. AFAIK, with the official HTC bootloader unlock my kernel and radio cannot be changed but everything else can.
So can I install CM9 successfully using CWM if I have the official bootloader unlock or will it only work with S-OFF? I guess the real question is will CM9 on the Sensation work with the default kernel, radio, and firmware?
Thanks!
NVM, finally found a good guide to flash custom ROMs and with custom kernels with S-ON if you are HTC bootloader unlocked, will use this for CM9 and see how it goes
did you find that after doing this it messed up your wifi, cuz near the end it says there's a possibility?
Been using it for a day and WiFi works perfectly.
The WiFi will only be a problem if the kernel doesn't flash, but in the case of CM9 it needs a custom kernel to even boot anyway, the Sense kernel won't work. So if CM9 boots it'll work
Also 4EXT has been updated since that thread was written and when you install the 4EXT recovery it now asks you if your device is S-ON, if you hit yes it'll turn the SmartFlash thing on automatically. What that does is flash the kernel separately before you exit the recovery to reboot back into Android and in my case it worked fine
Only catch is that you can only install ROMs for your current firmware. I have 3.32 so I can pretty much install any ICS ROM, but I can't install a GB ROM and I might not be able to install a Jellybean ROM, for example. But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it
I had this too, and I found out that I could flash only ROMs, where kernel is ready made .img file inside the zip. To do this, I needed to install the ROM (it installed into /system, but the kernel couldn't be installed due to protection), reboot into fastboot, and flash the extracted kernel img with ADB from the PC (as ADB was only way to flash kernel).
If there was a custom installer where I could configure the kernel (set CPU speed etc)., that would mean that the kernel image is assembled during installation, and it is not readily available in ROM. In that case, I was f***ed .
Most ROMs have the standard boot.img file in the .zip though, and you can check it by just extracting the files and taking a look
The 4EXT process basically does the same as you did but automatically, it's just as much effort as flashing a ROM normally
I see one problem with that your are using cwm as the recovery and that simply will not work because you can't flash kernels because your s on but there's light at the end of the tunnel but you must be rooted to do this you Will need to install 4ext custom recovery why because it will allow you to flash kernels with smart flash enabled and you can't do that with cwm

I've successfully installed TrickDroid 6.1 and also the Tweaking software on my T-Mobile One S. At the very end the of the install instructions it says, "You can flash the stock kernel with the Boot Flash Script afterwards."
I've flashed many ROMs on other phones before but don't recall this step. Is it necessary? Right now the ROM works fine, but some of the tweaks (volume wake and Google Ears) do not. Thanks!
Idk about "have to" since torxx uses stock kernel... but I think he modifies it so I ALWAYS flash the boot.img that's packaged in the rom.zip

I believed the Trickdroid 6.1 has an OC kernel built in.
So if the OC kernel is what you want don't have to do anything else.
If you want the stock kernel run the boot flash script
Hello
My son has a Verizon SIII. We have CWM 6 installed, and it's rooted.
I want to put on a new ROM for him, or perhaps just one of the better kernels for underclocking, battery life etc. Problem is, I don't know if he still has the stock ROM on, and he's not sure. He seems to recall he may have installed a ROM with Odin, but he's not sure.
I don't want to start putting a Kernel on that should only be on a stock ROM, if he's got something else.
Baseband is I525VRLF2
Kernel is 3.08-618049-usr

Looks stock. Usually dev will put rom name on that page. If he odin it should be stock. Custom roms flashed through recovery.

Assuming it's stock, are there any good kernels that are appropriate for this ROM for the purpose of battery life?

Bootloader must be unlocked and have custom recovery. I use and prefer TWRP but CWM also available. There are a few TW kernels. Clean kernel, lean Kernel, Trinity kernel, KT747. Never ran a custom kernel on stock rom so don't know what would be the outcome. lol

If I've got CWM on it, that means I've got an unlocked bootloader, right?

No they're different. However, go here
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32456-app-920-ez-unlock-14-easiest-way-to-unlock-your-bootloader/
Download version 1.2 the newer ones don't seem to work right. Its a simple app to unlock the bootloader.

As I said: I was wandering if it is possibile to change kernel, I tried this one, installed with aroma, but my Sensation is stuck in a bootloop.
I'm S-on, I tried to flash either with and without the 4ext smart flash with the same result.
Anyone has a solution?

flash the boot.img of the rom manually
see here how
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861 (only extra 1step)
otherwise flash another kernel
which kernel did you use?

Sorry! I forgot to past the link and then I had to wait five minutes to edit my post and, well, I forgot again.
This is the kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216197 I don't really need it but I would have tried some oc and the sweep2wake function and stuff, so, any other kernel (or even the rom one, if it's possible to set it) is the same to me.
Just to tell you: I flashed Jellybam after a full wipe, and it was working, then flashed the kernel, then, when I got stuck in the bootloop I flashed Jellybam again without wiping, right now all works properly.

That kernel is NOT designed for AOSP Jelly Bean ROMs like JellyBAM. That kernel is designed for Sense Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs, so it's to be expected that your phone won't boot after flashing that over JellyBAM. If you want a kernel to use with JellyBAM that has all the features that you just mentioned (Sweep2Wake, OC, etc.) then try my kernel (Sultan kernel). The thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035897

Yeah well, I was looking at the title of that kernel thread while I realized which was the problem, I'm glad to tell you that I flashed your kernel last night (I'm Italian) and after a whole day using it I have to say that I really like it (even if I've to settle with all the differences between the governors and the best way to set them with aroma).
Thank you!
