I've found that the caps lock and shift keys seem to be placed poorly and result in often clicking caps lock instead of shift and having to delete a bunch of CAPS text and type again. I've seen other reports of users having trouble adapting to this keyboard quirk. Shift should be next to the Z key, and caps lock is redundant because clicking shift twice enables caps lock. So I've modified the caps lock key to duplicate the shift key functionality.
ADB Instructions:
Extract keypad_8960.kl from zip file to external SD card, then open a command prompt and navigate to your ADB directory. Execute the following commands:
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
mv /system/usr/keylayout/keypad_8960.kl /system/usr/keylayout/keypad_8960.bak
cp /mnt/external1/keypad_8960.kl /system/usr/keylayout/keypad_8960.kl
chmod 644 /system/usr/keylayout/keypad_8960.kl
reboot
Root Explorer or ES File Explorer instructions:
Extract keypad_8960.kl from zip file
Mount /system as read/write
Navigate to /system/usr/keylayout
Rename keypad_8960.kl to keypad_8960.bak
Copy keypad_8960.kl extracted from zip to /system/usr/keylayout
Change permissions to rw-r--r--
Reboot phone
Manual modification instructions:
Edit keypad_8960.kl and locate the following line:
key 58 CAPS WAKE_DROPPED
Change line to:
key 58 SHIFT_LEFT WAKE_DROPPED
Let me know how this works out for people, and if there are any other keyboard remapping requests!
Hi, I would be forever grateful if you could make voice the default action on the tab key. I usually use voice when driving so doing a shift-tab is difficult, and don't use the tab functionality anyway.

If you flash the softkey mod that includes the search button, long pressing the soft search key opens voice search. Not exactly what you were asking, but one alternative.

I'm confirming, just did the manual way mod and Caps now works like Shift and that's really good for me because I have just switched from HTC Touch Pro2. Couldn't get used to new keyboard order, now I don't have to

MUST HAVE ROOT ACCESS!!
You can do this on your phone using Terminal Emulator
1. type "su" to turn $ into # (Superuser Whitelist will ask for root access; grant it)
2. Type 'cd data/app-private'.
3. Get a list of all the applications by typing 'ls'.
4. Pick which file you want to copy and type 'cp your_file_name.apk /sdcard/ e.g. 'cp com.android.musicplayer.apk /sdcard/'
5. Copy the .apk file off your memory card.
You can also do this using ADB, just replace step one with "adb shell" in your command prompt, and follow the rest of the steps
Why are you making it easier for people to pirate applications?

so all copyright law violations aside you have failed to mention the fact that the file can no longer be used on a G1 or any other file structure requiring proper permissions
nevertheless .. copying of these protected apps off the G1 is most definitely illegal .. i would not recommend testing this out
Well guys I've been tweaking with this a lot and I've finally got it working. Here are the steps to do so:
First of all you must be ROOTED!
-Open Root Explorer and Mount R/W
-Go to System/Media
-Delete Bootani.qmg
-Reboot (You will hear the sound but will not be able to see the bootlogo. )
-Go to Root Explorer
-Go to System/ etc
-Delete "Power On"
*Big thanks for Austin420 for the help on removing the sound.
-Next Step (Flashing a Bootanimation.zip)
the sound is under system > etc
file is called "Power On". its the only audio file type in this folder.

Thank you for the contribution.
Edit: Apparently the file cannot be deleted.
Now, to delete the shutdown will be a little harder.
ive got a blank .wav file (10 seconds of silence) that can be renamed PowerOn.wav . do you think replacing the original file with the silent one will do anything, i.e. overwriting the old file instead if deleting it since the system wont let you?
I don't think so. Apparrently permission requierments aren't as easy to aquire as I thought. To remove this files is gonna be a PITA and also I don't think we have aquire 100% root. And that's our main problem.

When I enter the System Folder, root explorer automatically enters RW.
Not sure the issue but this seems to not be working for me.
Root explorer will delete the file but it comes back on reboot.
Root explorer not currently working w epic. Its not mounting properly.

has anyone tried to replace this file with a GIF or ZIP image file?

These instructions were kind of vague. Actually, VERY vague, haha. So here are the steps that I did to make it work:
(I'm assuming you have ADB and know how to use it, and you're in your operating system's terminal or DOS window)
1. Make sure you're connected.
Code:
adb devices
2. Connect to your Epic through SHELL.
Code:
adb shell
3. Connect as root.
Code:
su root
4. Remount /system with read/write ability.
Code:
remount rw
6. Go to /system/media folder.
Code:
cd /system/media
7. Change the security settings of the video file so that you can rename it or delete it (I renamed it). This video file is the boot up video (Sprint + Galaxy S).
Code:
chmod 777 bootani.qmg
8. Rename or delete bootani.qmg
To rename, type:
Code:
mv bootani.qmg bootani.qmg.bak
to delete, type:
Code:
rm bootani.qmg
9. Now to do the sound. go to /system/etc directory.
Code:
cd /system/etc
10. Change the security settings of the audio file.
Code:
chmod 777 PowerOn.wav
11. Rename or delete PowerOn.wav.
To rename, type:
Code:
mv PowerOn.wav PowerOn.wav.bak
to delete, type:
Code:
rm PowerOn.wav
12. Exit SU mode.
Code:
exit
13. Exit ADB.
Code:
exit
Now reboot your phone, and the video that plays will be gone!
I HAVE CONFIRMED that this does NOT make your device boot faster! Side by side with another Epic 4G, on boot, He has the nice Sprint + Galaxy S video, and mine just stays BLACK and both login screens show up exactly at the same time.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Thanks QuietFreak, your method did work, although on my Epic it took down the Galaxy S animation too, which seems strage as there's that SamsungBootLogo.qmg or whatever. Maybe the first one calls the second or something. Either way, cheers.
Maybe it's one long boot animation?
Here's what I did:
I wanted to silence the boot sound before I flashed a ROM, so...
1. Open ROM with 7zip (DON'T EXTRACT IT!)
2. rename /system/etc/PowerOn.wav to PowerOn.wav.bak
3. close 7zip and transfer zip to your SD card.
4. Flash and have fun! No sound, even on the first boot.
Perfect! Now where is the power off sound at?
Edit: found it.
Use root manager to mount as rw then use root explorer then mount that as rw then delete bootani.qmg and playlogo and power.wav this will remove sprint and samsung galaxy boot screens and boot sound. but i heard that the root method uses the boot sequence to start the script so i dont know if it is wise to remove the boot with root or if it starts even before the sprint screen.
I've finally created working adfree for Desire HD.
*** Probably there is something in ROM which overwrites hosts to default every one hour. I'm trying to track this. ***
Please comment.
Instructions:
1. Install visionary
2. Set visionary to run on boot
3. Extract files to /data/local/
Use Root Explorer or something like this, mount system partition as r/w and copy files from zip. You should have two files: /data/local/hosts and /data/local/visionary.sh
4. Set permissions of visionary.sh to executable
4. Restart phone
Ver. 0.9
Using my huge hosts file which is compilation from three sources plus my manual additions.

Do you recommend we uninstall adfree app when using this?
Uninstalled but still not blocking ads in apps for me, e.g. in alchemy
The ads came back a few mins later... So guess you didn't quite break the code yet

Does this method not work with the temp root?
1. Search for Adfree Android on the market
2. Install and run
3. allow it to download and install new hosts file, it will copy it to your sdcard and try to replace /system/etc/hosts but fail (it should reboot the phone shortly)
4. Power off the phone and hold Volume Down and power.
5. Use volume down to select recovery
6. In clockwork recovery volume down to "partitions menu" and hit the track pad to select
7. Select "mount /system" and "mount /sdcard" "mount /data"
8. Plug in your usb cord and open a command line on your pc
9. enter adb shell and type the following commands
cp /sdcard/hosts /data/data/hosts
rm /system/etc/hosts
ln -s /data/data/hosts /system/etc/hosts
10. Reboot your phone and enjoy adfree android.
this is what i used on my legend was hoping it would be as easy, :\
I think it might be better to use 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1
With 127.0.0.1 it will attempt to connect to itself and wait until it times out, but with 0.0.0.0 is will stop straight away since it's an invalid address.

on the DHD we don't have a custom recovery nor write access to /system atm so this won't work
Strangely enough my Ad-Free works fine without the need of this.
0.0.0.0 worked for me.. cheers
Here's the Stock Ice Cream Sandwich Boot Animation for our G2x.
The resolution is a little messed up IMO but it's smooth and works well.
HOW TO GET IT WORKING:
Method 1) via Root Explorer
Step 1) Buy Root Explorer or any other file manager that allows you to mount you /system partition as R/W
Step 2) Download the attached "bootanimation.zip" to your phones sdcard. You will find it in your "Download" folder.
Step 3) Go to /system/media via root explorer and copy your current "bootanimation.zip" to the root of your SD card (this steps for a backup incase you want to revert"
Step 4) Copy the newly downloaded bootanimation.zip from your downloads folder to /system/media (don't forget to remount /system as R/W) Say "yes" to the over write prompt that root explorer shows you.
Step 5) This steps for making sure your permissions are correct. Long press the bootanimation.zip file in /system/media (the one you copied over in the previous step) and select the "permissions" option.
They should be
Owner: Read and Write shoould be checked
The others must only have "read" checked
Reboot and you should be done!!
Method 2) via ADB
Step 1) (not going into the installation of ADB) Open a terminal window and "cd" your way to your SDK directory.
Step 2) Type in "adb root or on a mac ./adb root" this should restart the ADB daemon as root.
Step 3) type in ./adb remount (this remounts /sytem as R/W"
Step 4) This is the step where you push your new bootanimation.zip to /system/media
Make sure you know which directory on your computer the new bootanimation.zip is in
run this command ./adb push /THE PATH TO THE DIRECTORY/bootanimation.zip /system/media
Step 5) Now that the file has been pushed to the correct directory, the permissions need to be changed again.
run ./adb shell
then type su
then cd /system/media
then, this is the command to change the perms chmod 755 bootanimation.zip (the permissions required are 644 but to be safe change it to 755)
Thats it!! YOur DONE!! now just reboot and you will see your shiny new Animation!!
Put the boot animation in /data/local/ so it doesn't get re-written when you flash a new rom, nightly, release, whatever.
No need for permissions editing if you use adb to push the animation, it is only required b/c the sd card file partition is unable to keep the permission information. When using adb, it all works automagically.
There are plenty of free file manager apps that can use root functionality. Also, it is the stock ICS animation that has been out for a while now, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceBI5RJjScQ
thanks it looksvokay

Root Browser Lite gets the job done for free. Thanks for the info.
Hello Forum!
So i am currently using a Virgin Mobile LG Optimus Elite.
After 2 days of refuge here on the forums i amazingly found a small little program that was intended to root p500 devices and worked for mine.
I did run root checker and all plus i have root access so it is rooted.
My problem is,
1.) I cannot edit my build.prop
2.) Install Xbox Smartglass (which is the whole reason i'm killing myself for all this right now)
I'm running 2.3.7 gingerbread, and the smartglass app requires 4.0 and up.
I am certain this phone can run the app.
From the very beginning i tried to take the easy path out by manually downloading the .apk from an outside source but when i try to install it
i get an error stating that it had a problem "parsing" the info.
Running my little research i found you could edit the build.prop file to make the play store think you were running another device that was compatible. Then realizing my device must be rooted first, began my 2 days long journey to root the stubborn thing.
After root success, I installed ES File Explorer. From there, i went to my build.prop, proceeded to edit it with the ES text editor. Re-wrote the 2 lines required then when i went to save, "Error occurred when trying to save the file. It will not be saved." And just left me hanging after that.
In a quick desperate attempt, i found QtADB, which i thought would allow me to edit the system files. It only allowed me access to a hand full of the root directories. I downloaded the newest android dev kit (obviously you need it to run QtADB) so i don't know what exactly the problem here is.
For my absolute last desperate attempt i decided to do it manually. I took the build.prop and edited it manually through wordpad. (NOTE: i backed up the original) I named it "copy.build.prop" and placed it back in an easy to find directory. I then opened up ES file explorer, located the file and tried to copy it to the original location but no matter what i name it or what i do in general it will not move. It keeps failing and just telling me the file cannot be moved.
I am at my last legs with this to the point where i may just give up.
I dont know what to do and was hoping someone on here would.
If there was another way to install the app? If i could install it manually? Something to get me around all these utterly frustrating and annoying errors. I've ran from error to error, fixing it then coming to another. And at this point i just dont know what to do.
The help and replies would be much appreciated! Thanks in advanced!
The build.prop file is located in the /system partition, which is by default mounted as read-only (and for good reason).
Here are some simple steps to modifying the build.prop file.
1) Fire up an ADB shell ("adb shell" from a command prompt without quotes)
2) Within the ADB shell, execute "mount -o rw,remount /system /system" without quotes. This will remount your /system partition in read-write mode
3) Open a new command prompt and CD to an easily accessible directory (e.g "cd ~/Desktop" if on a Linux box)
4) Execute "adb pull /system/build.prop" without quotes
5) Edit the build.prop file as needed with a good text editor (DO NOT use Wordpad or Notepad, I prefer Notepad++ on Windows and Geany on Linux)
6) Execute "adb push /path/to/your/edited/build.prop /system/build.prop" without quotes. This will copy your modified build.prop back into the /system partition
7) In the ADB shell prompt, execute "mount -o ro,remount /system /system" without quotes. This will remount your /system partition read-only (never leave it read-write that is bad)
8) Reboot your phone
9) Profit!
As far as the Smartglass app goes, there is likely a good reason it requires ICS and above, and simply modifying your build.prop may not be enough. Don't take my word for it though, try the above steps and see what happens.
Cheers!
