Lenovo A789 APKHOT camera not working
Hello folks!
I've got a Lenovo A789 since few days.
The phone came with apkhot (APKHOT_A789_4.0.4_0808) Rom installed from the seller.
But I've found a nasty surprise: rear camera (the 5MP one) isn't working at all: when I launch Camera app only
the front one works and there is no way to switch to the other.
I've tried to install other camera apps (like Camera zoom) but they all hung with error messages so it seems
that camera isn't supported by this rom.
I've read the forum related to installing Cybermaus Rom - A789_ROW_S106_cybermaus_ICS_v3.11.zip but I would know if there are issues to install it by CWM Recovery starting from APKHOT Rom.
I have CWM Recovery 5.5.0.4 installed that supports recovery from zip files.
So anyone has ever done such recovery?
Is it a risk free operation? Can I proceed?
Thanks
Vic

CWM Recovery 5.5.0.4 it's all you need.
You can install Cybermaus Rom or andrea_d86 rom (mine, link in my signature) or which other you want with that recovery.
The risk are very low, just be sure the battery is charged and follow the instructions carefully.

Do you know if cybermause rom istallation will leave CWM Recovery intact so that I can roll back to APKHOT or install
another Rom (the yours for istance)?
Have you ever known about camera not working issues with any custom Rom ?

I got access the cwm recovery by pressing the volume up and down, before pressing the power.
The cwm installed this on my phone is 6v.0.1.1 compiled by Dean @ etotalk. You can install the ROM andrea_d86-4.0.4-lenovoa789 by this version of CWM recovery installed on my phone?
Again, thank you.

Hello, Please, Could you help me, again
How can I make apps to be directly installed on the SD Card, especially games like NFS SHIFT?
I already went into settings, storage ... but it did not work.
I also did the tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788594, but neither worked.

Hey andrea,
I just have a question before reflashing my whole phone again.
The only thing I'm missing in cybermaus ROM is multilanguage support. Also with one of the locale apps a lot of menus and apps are in native english.
Is your ROM different (so all languages are in all parts of the phone working and not just in some) and when yes, what did you do to get it work to properly?
Is there a way to install that feature afterwards without reflashing?
Thank you very much for reply.
Some help to install the ROM in my A789
Hi,
Some days ago I bought my A789, it isn't rooted and it there isn't CWM installed, just the original recovery. So I have many questions to install a new ROM.
1) To install andrea ROM in a original A789 I have to root it before?
2) If I have root my phone, how is the best way to root it? I tried unlockroot and it didn't works. Install CWM is a bit confused for me, maybe beucause I've never done it before (I am a newbie).
3) Following the steps described by nayton sanches can I install andrea ROM?
4) How dangerous is install a new ROM? Is there any way to backup or save the original ROM?
5) To install a new ROM where is the right place to save the ROM? In the SD card or in the root of the phone memory?
I know all of this questions are very basic for all of yours, but I am affraid to commit some mistake and destroy my phone. I want to update my phone because the multilanguage feature, I am from Brazil.
Plese excuse me for my poor English.
If someone could help me I am very gracefully.

No, the multilingual isn't a patch, is bound with the framework.

Hello All,
I need your help regarding upgrade my captivate which is running on 2.1. I had hard bricked it once before when I was trying to update it via odin. Just got fixed it back from mobiletechvideos.com. Now I want to upgrade it to gingerbread Can anyone tell me any stable rom which I can upgrade safely and have 0% chance to hard bricked it again. Or any rom which I can flash via any other tool not via odin as I thought last bricked was caused due to odin. Pls help me.
I like the MIUI rom but I saw that it use ODIN so I am a bit afread to try it
Thanks
My understanding of the process.
I'm fairly sure you need to use superoneclick to root, that's step one. Next go to market and dowload ROM manager and install it, that's step two.Step three, flash clockworkmod recovery with ROM manager. Choose captivateMTD and let it flash. Step four, now go to the download ROM and choose an MTD ROM. I reccomend cyanogenmod as its aosp, overclocked and generally awesome. They have a stable build that's a great dd. Step five is to flash it. When the download completes it will promt you to wipe data and cache, clear everything and hit go. Step six would be to dl and flash gapps with ROM manager. Wipe cache and install. After all this you should be on cm7 stable. Pm me if you need help. I have the drivers and all files you could possibly need in my dropbox account.
Good luck and enjoy cyanogenmod.

please, for the love all that is holy, leave your phone alone if you dont know how to use GOOGLE
http://bit.ly/uoGYG7
I tried to download superoneclick via this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
All archive showing me damaged only 8 mb version is working but when I tried to root it via that version it shows me FAILED msg at the end. Any help in this regard ?
You do not need to root your phone to install a custom rom.
If you currently are on 2.1, boot into recovery and flash this zip file.
From here you can go about installing a gingerbread kernel and rom.
If you are unsure of the process, please do lots more research before you go flashing anything. If you brick again it's not my fault.

Step One: Root Done
Step Two: ROM manager installation Done
Step Three: flash clockworkmod recovery with ROM manager (When I clicked on it asked me that confirm phone model and when I clicked on samsung captivate MDT it said that clockworkmod not officially supported the captivate MDT and have you installed clockworkmod based recovery manually if I clicked on yes it proceed to the next screen and if I clicked no it said that without it rom manager will not work. If i clicked on yes it proceed to the next screen and asked me the clockworkmod version 2.x or 3.x. I select one of them and click on the install rom from SD card and then browse to my downloaded rom when I clicked on rom and it will ask me to backup exsisiting rom, wipe data and cache and wipe dalvik cache. I had selected last 2 options and clicked ok then it asked me to press ok to reboot into clockworkMod Recovery and continue the installation when I clicked ok and rebooted where it showing me 4 options: rebbot system now, reinstall packages, delete all user data and delete cache data. After that I don't know what to do BTW I downloaded MIUI rom as I wana try it )
Any Help ?
Its sounds like you are in the stock recovery still. When you get to the screen with four options click reinstall packages and it should take you to clockwork recovery. The you will have many more options. You will want to go to install zip from SD card then choose zip from SD card and then navigate to your rom of choice and click it. Then it will go through the install process and when it is done hit reboot now and you should be running your custom rom.

Get into cwm again via buttons and flash cm7 one more time. Should fix the error you're seeing.

I searched this forum a bit and I can't find a nice guide. I am currently running rooted .19 on my TF101, B70KAS. Is it as simple as dropping the ROM on my internal SD and letting it update to the latest Revolver release (based on .21)? Or can I do it with booting into recovery mode? This is my first tablet and I have no clowworkmod on my tablet... do I need to flash that somehow? Where's a guide?

I am very familiar with CWM, flashing, nandroid backups, etc. I've had a nexus one for a long long time. I just can't find any good stickies on how to install CWM on my tablet, which I assume is my first step, though I find it odd there are no stickies. On the Nexus One forum there are lots! Search for RecoveryInstaller in the Themes and Apps section.
One click CWM installer, don't get any easier than that.
I had the Same issue coming from the nexus s. the tricky bit is that rom manager does not support the transformer. I've got a galaxy tab 10.1 as well and flashing over a custom recovery was easy as pie.
anyway, what you have to do is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093818)
then you need to install an app (i use reboot2recovery) from the marketplace to get into the custom recovery. i've tried quickboot or rom manager but all it does it take me to a black screen or reboot the device. reboot2recovery will actually drop you into clockworkmod recovery. from there, do your nandroid backup. you'll need an SD card in your transformer for it to actually go ahead with the backup.
aside: from my reading, the backup should backup to internal storage with that modded clockwork. i've never been able to get it to work though. anyway, just use an SD card for now so you can get through the difficult stuff.
so at this point uve done the following:
installed clockwordmod using the first 2 links and installed the reboot2recovery APK to get into recovery.
now you have an SD card in your transformer and you are doing a nandroid backup.
once completed, put the 200+mb revolver rom on the root of your SD card. you may also want to put another kernel. i use the one recommended by revolver.
now just wipe the cache, data, etc as usual. now flash the rom, reboot the system when completed. plug in your gmail account, wifi password etc. and then reinstall the reboot2recovery apk. now reboot to recovery and then flash the kernel. reboot and ure good to go. install revolver parts to allow for additional tweaking and OTA updating.
i got my transformer from bestbuy this thanksgiving and went to revolver 3.9.5 immediately. last night i actually flashed revolver 3.11 right over it. not a single problem.
edit: reading the above post, i remember that my FIRST recovery installation was using that one-click tool and, as was said, it works flawlessly. you still need the reboot2recovery though. and recoveryinstaller WILL NOT install the modified for internal storage version of clockwork. i'm thinking maybe i just havent tried backing up since updating to the internal storage version, which is why i think i've "never gotten it to work"

Awesome, I had tried it earlier and it didn't do anything. Then I realized that my superuser app was FCing, however I could still use adb shell and su just fine! After I realized there was an update for the superuser app, I installed it. Everything is perfect now.

If you can boot back into the OS than move the files to internal storage.
If not use ADB to push the files needed to internal storage.

Got it fixed you guys..
so if anyone ever encounter these problems hre the steps i took to sort it out:
Fisrt, symptoms:
1)device isn't being recognized when connectd to a pc
2)device reset it self every few miutes
solution:
reflash recovery bootloader and firmware, i used that zip file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1552303
then, you will see that the recovery console has changed and that you can't install CM9 Rom.
so what i have done is re-installing the new recovery by Roach
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1213723
then format all partitions and re-installing CM9 everything worked for me after these steps
GoodLuck

You think on this post? Ok, but i have TF101G, not TF101. Can I put that ROM on TF101G? I had same problem with all custom ROM, and I don't know how to put ROM on internal memory. Can I enter ADB from AXP?

Go here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22359727&postcount=218
download RecoveryInstaller and install on your tablet.
Open RecoveryInstaller and click the "Flash Recovery now"
You should have a CWM version that will read from external sd card
Thanks you a lot. I install stock WW rom, everythings works fine, only had problem with market. When I open market, it's loading, and after 2-3min i got No connection. I try to download Google Play apk and install it, but i got same problem.
EDIT: That's only on Wi-fi, on 3G works fine. Anyone know what is problem?

Hi eveyone, I updated my stock from 4.0 to 4.1 through odin and it was really painless. Sorry if this sounds lazy but can you install cm the same way? Doing the whole CW etc. seems a lot of steps - i'd rather upload one file only if possible. Thanks!

Thanks. You cannot - what I mean is: is CM ever realeased as a TAR-compatible ODIN file?
That can certainly be done. But it's not the norm.

Thanks Nardholio. I'm obviously missing some important feature CWM offers thatthe "odin process" does not. Is it seamless backup amd restore? Or is it the possibility of adding patches and new stuff - say, gapps on top of CM?
Thanks again!

CWM offers both of those things as an advantage, yes. You also can use CWM with the Stock image to gain the backup and restore features, amongst others.
And really, if you're already running Stock JB, the process is as simple as:
Place The cm-10.2-XXXXXXXX-NIGHTLY-apexqtmo.zip and gapps zip files on your phone, either on the 'internal' or external SD Card. (This even is optional, as they can be sideloaded if you have adb)
Flash CWM with Odin or Heimdall.
Reboot into recovery
Flash the cm nightly.zip
Flash the gapps.zip
wipe /cache with CWM.
Issue a factory reset with CWM.
Reboot to system.
If you're still on ICS, then you just need to add the steps of flashing the JB-stock-modem.zip and JB-stock-bootloader.zip before flashing the cm-nightly.zip (Turn GPS OFF before flashing these, specifically the modem, just to be on the safe side)
If you perform a backup with CWM before flashing anything, you can restore your stock system as you please.
If you simply want to root your relay, flash an appropriate recovery flashable zip copy of Superuser or SuperSU instead of flashing anything else.
kilr00y, along with providing the JB-stock-modem and JB-stock-bootloader recovery-flashable zip files, also provided a JB-stock-image.zip that can be used to go back to a stock-like system.
CWM allows you for a much greater amount of control over your phone, even when still running a stock image, due to the flexibility of being able to flash new applications directly to the system directories (such as Superuser/SuperSU) without having to have everything be signed by Samsung.

THANKS! This is by far the easiest step by step instructions I've seen, and gladly I'm on stock JB already.
Will give this a try
thanks again!
just booted into apex CM 347 nightly after the... ehem... peculiar apex logo thanks a lot for your effort.
now, I am a noob but can find my way around. I still think the whole process (CM and co, not the relay 4g per se) is a bit convoluted and underdocumented. just an example: I downloaded the IMG file from CWM but it took me a while to figure out that I had to transform it into md5 for it to play nice with odin, etc.
buy hey. I'm going to setup my system.
thanks everyone!!

In all honesty, ODIN itself is an underdocumented POS, the recovery.img file (or in this case, the renamed apexq_recovery-10.2.img file if you were following along with the wiki) comes right from the build process, it can be flashed directly without much tooling about with it using heimdal, which is an open source replacement for ODIN, that works very well. Heimdall can be used optionally with a GUI, but I personally use it from the command line, to get it to flash a recovery image to the recovery partition of a Relay, it's simply:
heimdall flash --recovery apexq_recovery-10.2.img

How did you transform the img to md5 (I can also take the cwm in md5 format from the root thread, am I right?) ?
So I can flash anything without root using this method (even recovery) ? I couldn't do this with my desire Z, it's confusing me !
Which recovery should I flash to use cm10.2 (the cwm or the apexq_recovery-10.2.img ?) ?
=> If I use an older recovery I can't flash any jelly been rom's ?

Hi, thanks for replying. I cannot post in the topic of the rom because I am new on the forum (what I get when I try to post something overthere).
Could you please explain me how to fix the permissions in CWM?
I am a beginner who been trying to fix his tablet for a week now, but I still dont understand everything since I cant put all my time on it... If its not about following tutorials step by step, i am lost...
I also tried the fast team one, without any success, when the rom is installed and the device is rebooted, this time the screen stay blocked on "samsung galaxy tab3" for years!!!
sorry, i meant the fast dream rom
I just tried to Flash three roms from sammobile.com (one from hong-kong, one from spain and one from germany) through Odin.
Everytime I get I click on AP to load the rom on odin, I get this message:"md5 error! Binary is invalid".
Since I have rooted the tablet using odin to instal CWM, when I boot the tablet in download mode, I can see:
- PRODUCT NAME: SM-T311
- CURRENT BINARY: Cusom
- SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
Is it related? Someone help plz...
The question is do i really have to install a new rom, now that the tablet is rooted with CWM on it, can't do any manipulation to allow the chinese rom to accept google playstore etc...
My biggest problem with the chinese rom that comes with it is that i cant install download google playstore, i installed it but everytime i open it, it closes right away. Not google nor other google apps available neither since it was sold in china...

You should be able to post on ROM forum now(as you've reached 10 posts.
And the fix permissions option should be in 'advanced' section in CWM(not sure, I use TWRP recovery)

In the end, I just used a previous version of Odin (3.4 instead of 3.9) to flash an original stock rom.
Now the problem is that I have a new CWM that works with the volume up, volume down button, and this menu:
- reboot system now
- apply update from ADB
- apply update from external storage
- zipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- apply update from cache
Since the rom is not really good, i wanted to flash another one (one of those we just talked about), but the backup i did with the previous CWM i had (Philz Advanced CWM 6.08.90) is nowhere in the tablet anymore (i dont have any sd card) and i dont know how to make a back up with this CWM...
So now the question is how to make a backup with this version of CWM so I can try to flash other roms, or how to get the version that i had before without takin any risk of brickin the device (so i can make another backup and try to flash another)

Are you sure the new recovery is CWM and not stock recovery?? If you flashed stock ROM, it should've given you stock recovery again...

Yup, I think you'd better to start over again. Try take a look at this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2401901
It works well for my SM-T311 :good: Then you can reroot and make a backup from TWRP easily.
I also suggest you to take a look at this too : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522091 From there, you can get PhilZ touch recovery based on CWM v.6.0.4.5
