does anyone know how to do this? i have used superoneclick, AIO captivate tools and OCD. nothing works
i have a rooted captivate running froyo stock
Backup your stuff and flash Cognition. Easiest way. You may want to stay stock, but trust me, it's much better.

Agreed. Read what cog has in it, it comes with side loading enabled

I got it to work through superoneclick even though it failed the 1st 2 times I did it. I restarted the phone did the non market app fix and then restarted again and applanet worked. It is still a little buggy but it works.

I agree with flashing Cog.
However, I am currently trying to see how far I can get with the stock 2.2.
With that said, I used "SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse" to root and allow non-market apps. If it does not work, remember to right click the .exe and run as administrator (if you are on Win7).
i want to keep it stock because of the just incase something happens and i need to use the warranty or insurance i want to get it back to stock in the matter of 2 clicks to backup all the att bloatware and unroot so i can send it in.
i know there is another method to flash back to stock but i dont really understand flashing different roms and kernels and want it to be as simple as possible. if i find a real need to flash a different rom and kernel i will learn more about it. im just not fully educated on much of this stuff.

Seriously, man, getting back to stock is as easy as that. All you have to do is download Odin one click, put your phone in download mode, click start, and bam, you're at stock. If you need me to walk you through flashing ROM's, I can later on today. It's not as hard as you think.
where do i download the rom for cognition
what are the pros and cons to cognition and the known bugs in it
why choose this over other roms? why not flash to 2.3.3?
will i have to re-download all of my apps and settings etc.?

ok, so i've read what i think i need to root and install a custom ROM (i think i want to try eagles blood 2.8 first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124522)
just got my G2x on Monday and it has GB 2.3.3 but i have not checked if it has an update and not sure i want to update it first, but that is my question.
should i do an update first before i do anything else or does it even matter? i mean i will root, then do a backup, then install the ROM, right? so it shouldnt matter if the phone is the latest and greatest from LG or T-Mobile as i will be overwriting it anyway...at least that is how i think it works
also i have seen where people are saying to wipe everything (or at least a few folders), how is that done? just delete what is in the folders or is there a tool to wipe said data?
No OTA updates are available, but is unnecessary anyway. Also, no need to root if you want to flash these roms as they already have root access. Flash clockworkmod (search for the thread on that) then flash the rom you want. All the instructions are there.

thanks, i didnt even want to try the update, but since you said there isnt one, i tried and sure enough, i have the latest already
OTA=over the air? i've seen that one a few times, some new acronyms here i need to learn

No need to root before nvflashing cwm.
Yes, OTA is "over the air". And just so you know, make sure you follow those nvflash steps EXACTLY as written. What you are choosing to flash, however, is the completely stock (although rooted) version of android 2.3.3 that you already have on your phone. This is fine, but after you get cwm you can flash any custom rom you find within the development section as well. I recommend at least choosing cm7 because the stock rom sucks.

This one. It's actually linked as the first step in your thread. This is the important one. Read it over a couple times first, and maybe watch some videos too.
Everything after that step in your thread is basically how to flash a custom rom. They are just choosing a rooted version of stock as their example.

root first if you want to backup any of the apps on the phone.
i rooted , clockworked , backed up the phone then copied the int and ext sd roms to my pc. installed titanium and backed up all the apps in the stock rom i thought i might want to keep. ( mostly the nova demo and need for speed) . copy your rom contents over so if you mistakenly format your sd card you can still return the phone to stock. ( don't ask i did it ) tryed cm7 stable. liked it but had sleep of death issues. returned the phone to stock . messed with the stock apps and root explorer backed everything up again. and now im ruing weapon r and love it. no stutter and smooth as a hot knife going thru butter and no sleep of death! and USB works every time. even love the loader he used.

i put eagles blood 2.8 on it and it seems to be doing ok.
couple of things, dont know if this is a theme issue, but it no longer says 4G, it has a letter H instead
also i moved the notification bar to the bottom but cant remember where to change that back to the top
that looks good. don't for get to copy off the internal and external sd chips and keep that data safe. when you made your backup in clockwork it stored it on the internal chip. titanium by default i be leave uses the external. if any thing goes wrong, as long as you have access to those backups and can boot to clockwork you can get your phone working.

so like i posted before it shows an H instead of 4G so i'm assuming that stands for HSPA?
Yeah that's it. How are you liking the rom? Bear in mind that now you have root access you can do all sorts of customizations. You can flash kernels that allow for overclocking or underclocking, use titanium backup (recommended) to preserve all apps and app data, modify boot animations and status bar icons, basically anything you want. Enjoy!

Pls help-
I'm not quite a noob, but def no dev... got my Atrix 2 rooted using mastermind's 1-click method, installed bootstrap & flashed clockworkmod recovery- everything went fine until trying to flash/restore the ROM itself. I followed the instructions to the letter (save ROM in cwm backup folder, wipe cache & data, do not flash zip... restore in recovery). Yet i've bricked 2 atrix 2's trying to install this rom. Luckily the store I work at was good about letting me switch out, but kinda scared to brick a 3rd device. It just errors on restore then goes back to cwm. I try to reboot and cant get past the moto startup screen.. I'm sure i'm doing something wrong, cuz I know it should work (there are screenshots in the thread)... any help?

You do know that you are more than likely going to be charged full price of the phone if you are returning a bricked phone to the store.

Luckily I work for a phone sales store, so they didn't charge me full price, as I blamed the phone bricking on a "bad software update" (which is kinda true- if the rom had restored properly, I wouldn't have been bricked in the 1st place)
; )
and it was still within the exch. period anyway... But that's neither here nor there... Yez, I unzipped the folder into the cwm backup folder. Not sure about reflashing fxz, havent tried that yet... don't really know how, never had to do that? I've flashed dozens of roms on my HTC & Samsung galaxy phones, but this is my first exp. w/ moto. So any help u can give is appreciated.

I had a similar problem, found the unzipped folder nested 2x under clockwork/backup.
Like this
sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/myrom/myrom
What I did was move all the files from second folder to the first then deleted second folder.
Hope I am clear and that it helps.

Just try to flash fxz,it's pretty simple. You just need the file you need and let the pc doing everything while you watching a tv.
I got this problem twice when i try to flash victory rom this morning, wich is caused by a corrupt file.
And everything is sorted out by flashing fxz.

The devs have got some roms from other moto phones to boot but have problems mostly with the radio and probably a handful of other things. I would highly recommend you not try to do this. We have plenty of good roms here in the dev section that you can flash that are good roms. Generally if you follow the instructions for each rom you would be fine but if you are afraid of bricking your phone make sure you read a lot before attempting anything and always make sure you have a way back to stock.

Flashing the fxz takes a couple minutes and is relatively easy. Follow the instructions here (you will have to scroll down a bit to get to the guide.) I assume that you got your A2 from AT&T. If you did not get it from AT&T then DO NOT flash that fxz... where in the world do you live?
First things first. How did you flash it? CWM?
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Again... follow the instructions . You use a utility called RSD Lite to flash the fxz.

your battery's not gonna charge until you can get the phone to boot, so do it now before anything gets worse. once you flash the fxz you can root, install the bootstrap and restore your old backup to get back to exactly where you were when you made it.
I just did the process, everything worked great, already restored my backup!

you can defiantly go back, i just dont know what will happen as far as twrp is concerned.
seems like at some point you would have a compatibility issue with the old software and the new twrp.
but i never tried it, therefore i didnt post to help you with inaccurate information.
there is a guide in my sig (skip down to the relevant parts), that will get you back to jb, but it is a proven method and doesnt involve restoring any backups.
Thanks for the response. I saw the guide. I'm just not that familiar with rsd. Thought restoring an old backup would be much simpler if it would work.

You can't restore an old backup. You can flash back to stock JB, but at that point, you cannot use any of the old ROMs as they need the old JB bootloader, which is now running the KK bootloader. That is in a trusted partition that you cannot downgrade at all. So, trying to use old JB-based ROMs will no longer work. So, if you were planning on going back to a JB-based custom ROM, it won't work from what I know once you have upgrade to KK.
But, if you want to go back to stock JB, then yes, that is possible.
You can use SamuriHL's RSD Flasher (which is in beta) -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/48904-rsd-flasher-beta-windows-only/
Or, you can use his House of Moto tool which is here -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/28162-house-of-moto-25/
He lists the instructions in both posts, so read, read and re-read a third time before you even attempt to flash back to JB. Three readings usually causes the light bulb to finally go off and it ensures you understand everything. If at that point you don't understand, then ask questions (and be sure you state you read it three times). Usually, people who do read three times figure it out and have no issues.
That's your only option at this point or stay on KK.
So there's no way to go back to the JB bootloader?

Like i said, no. It's in a trusted zone. You'll still have the KK bootloader installed, but you'll be able to flash back to stock JB and boot that.
You might be able to make it work, but as @bweN diorD stated, it's not a proven method to flash back to old ROMs nor use old nandroid backups.
I myself use Titanium Backup Pro to backup my apps and data and that works fine.
