[q] froyo to gingerbread - Droid 2 Global General

I am currently running froyo 2.2 I want to update to gingerbread 2.3.3.I have read a lot but I am confused. How do I do this?

Your device is most probably rooted and therefore does not accept updates.
The easier way would be to use RSDLite and flash the corresponding SBF image.
Read this: http://droid.koumakan.jp/wiki/SBF and remember that the ROM based on Android 2.3.4 (4.5.629) will not let you root easily and does not allow downgrading.
If you choose to stick with 2.3.3, read the main page (http://droid.koumakan.jp/) for instructions on how to disable Motorola's automatic updates.

also look at ezSBF no drivers, rsdlite, or sbf files needed

Question about reverting to 2.1 Captivate

I tried searching, but most of what I could find revolved around Rogers firmware.
I have a buddy with a Samsung Captivate on AT&T. He's wanting to install 2.2, and has the instructions, but neither of us can find a reliable way to revert to 2.1 in case he should ever need to. I know with my Droid X I would have to flash the SBF to revert whenever I install a leaked update, but it seems a little different on the Captivate. Can someone post a link or quick instructions on how to revert to 2.1 if necessary?
Thanks.

[Q] downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3

Hi, I am an i9000 user. I upgraded my phone to 2.3.4 and rooted it. I want to unroot it. I also want to know how to go back to 2.3.3
Just flash it with ODIN
it is easy but you need to read about how to use Odin if you have not before, do that throughly.
Once you are familiar.
Get the correct 2.3.3 firmware you want from samfirmware dot com (you need to register free)
Make absolutley sure it is the correct firmware and read the how to guide on the site.
Flash it and that is that (you do not need to unroot before, the new firmware will be unrooted). Do not forget to back up all your data first as flashing wipes all out.
QUESTION but why on earth do you want to go from the better 2.3.4 to the bugy 2.3.3 ? (that is why it was released in May to be replaced by 2.3.4 in June) !!!!
why?
was wondering the same thing...im trying go upgrade...why go
back down?

[Q] New to Charge, some questions.

I purchased a Charge today, and I'm trying to make sense of the options. I was spoiled with the ease by which one could modify my first Android phone, the Eris. I was just getting comfortable with the methods used to modify Motorola phones with my latest Droid X, and now I find myself a Samsung owner. Having spent the better part of the last two days reading threads, I'm starting to piece together the world of Charge. I'm hoping those here with more experience can validate some of my assumptions and fill in the blanks where needed on the items below.
1) How do you translate EE4, EP1W... etc? I assume these align to versions of Android, but what tells me what version (example: does EE4 = 2.2.1?)?
2) Flashing data onto the phone... I see instructions on both Odin and ClockWork Recovery (CWR). So, Odin is a PC based program which is used to flash .tar or .tar.md5 files onto the phone and CWR is initially installed via Odin. From there, one could use CWR to flash ROMs that are are stored on the flash card of your phone. Is there a version of CWR that can create a complete backup of the current status of your phone (similar to a NAND backup on the Eris)? Does the current version of CRW successfully restore these backups? I assume Odin vs. CMR is just preference, depending on how the cook wanted to create the ROM, correct? Is it possible to remove CWR once it is installed, i.e. is there a stock recovery available to be flashed via Odin?
3) Rooting... From what I can tell, rooting this phone is achieved by replacing the stock kernel with a kernel modified to grant root access, either directly or as packaged with a ROM, with either CWR or Odin, correct? I have come across previous posts speaking of "one click" methods that appear to no longer be valid, and methods only for EE4, etc. I cannot discern what is the correct method by which to obtain root access on a phone that is purchased as of today (15Oct11) (which goes to question 1, what does EE4 mean). Ideally, I would like to obtain root access without changing ROMs. Is this achieved by using Odin (or CWR) to flash a rooted kernel? Can anyone provide input here?
4) ROMs / kernels / compatibility..... The "Flashing Roms with Odin 1.82 GB 2.3.4 edition" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580) and "Get a rooted version of EE4" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14692818) threads give good descriptions of how to flash a ROM and the HOW TO thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107797) contains links to several ROMs, but reading through the posts I've noticed little mention of weather the ROM provides root access and what else is required with the ROM (additional flash for correct kernel or radio). Is it to be assumed all of the ROMs posted include root? Do each of the ROMs require a kernel with root access be installed before or after? What are the compatibility concerns with different ROMs and different kernels? Another "New to Charge" thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285473&page=2) states that as long as the ROM is matched to the kernel (i.e. Gingerbread ROM with Gingerbread kernel) there will be no issues, but are there any other compatibility concerns?
Thanks for any help you guys can provide to help me get up to speed with the Charge.
I'll try and help you out here. You are right, EE4/EP1W/EP3 all refer to the version of Android with EP3 being the latest leaked build of version 2.3.5. As for your second question some roms are ODIN only such as the EP3 roms/radios/ect. I believe all the EE4 roms are able to be flashed just by using CWR. The GB roms require you to use odin due to the file containing a kernal and radios specific to GB. I have found that the backup and recovery functions do work in CWR but as a safety precaution I also purchased Samsung Odin Maker created by P3Droid from the market. The app allows you to create a complete odin file of all settings and info stored on your phone that you can use in case something ever goes wrong. On the note of things going potentially wrong I would also search the forums for the stock EE4 odin file as well as the PIT file. This is going to be needed in the occurance of something going wrong while flashing a rom or needing to return the phone back to stock. If I can find the links for those files I will post them here for ya.

well that answers 1 and 2... 3) no you do not necessarily need to flash a custom kernel or rom to gain root however you are right that the roms/kernels will root you. there are no one click root methods that work properly with the Charge, at most will give you temp root that you will lose on next bootup. If you want root but to stay stock all you need to do is Odin CWM onto your phone and flash this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/34782489/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and presto when you boot your phone you'll be rooted. Also the 'EE4' they put on the box with the build date is the build thats on the phone when they ship it, I guess so they can keep track in their system or check if you return it.
4) those are good threads with reliable steps on how to flash though the rom/kernel links in them may be a little dated, I would look at the individual rom thread in the Development section for the most up to date. As stated before most if not all roms and kernels will root you when flashed or Odined, but if not (and it happens occasionally) just flash that superuser I linked in CWM and it'll root you. No the roms do not require a kernel to be installed first, as a matter of fact most rom packages will contain a kernel that will install itself with the rom. For the most part kernels and roms are independent as long as the android version is the same, for example only GB kernels can be flashed with GB roms and Froyo kernels with Froyo roms etc. You can read up in the kernel threads on any issues with compatibility.
Hope this helps

[Q] bootloaders

i have a samsung captivate with android 2.2 froyo and i want to go to 2.3.5 gingerbread. found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1300843
my question is which should i download with bootloaders or without bootloaders?
kies mini will not update me and even bricked me so i dont want to ever use kies mini again. i have both odin one click and odin 1.7. also have heimdell one click and prefer to use it but cant find a stock 2.3.5 rom that will boot up on my phone. i have downloaded 2 and used heimdell but didnt work. heimdell is just so much easier but i will use odin if needed. i do want a stock rom nothing fancy since phone modding is a little new to me. i have a computer degree but phones are a whole different world lol...

ok the link above isny working
If you are going from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3, you will need a Odin or Heimdall file that contains the bootloaders. They changed between 2.2 and 2.3, and you have to have them to make 2.3 run properly.
I would suggest this UCKH3 one-click Heimdall solution. It will flash everything you need, and you don't have to open anything else to do it.
Just be aware that it won't have ClockworkMod Recovery installed, so you'll have to flash a different kernel or use a one-click with CWM baked in later.
I would recommend flashing the lastest build (KK4) from Samsung. Here is a link to Odin one clicks and Heimdall one clicks with gingerbread bootloaders.
You must have Gingerbread bootloaders to run Gingerbread roms, however they are backwards compatible with Froyo and Eclair so you won't have to flash bootloaders again.

[Q] Help: the D2G upgrade 629OTA want to downgrade to fail

I have a D2G, a few days before the OTA update to the 629 Name: Blur_Version.4.5.608.A956.Verizon.en.US.Now want to downgrade to 608, but after re-starting the bl, can not enter the system.Ask you friends to make 629 Low packet (sbf)as soon as possible, an emergency rescue.I limited capacity, begging you God.Thank you very much
Could you help me ?help!!! waiting.........
It's Motorola who “makes” SBF images. If you updated to 4.5.629 you have no way to revert back. It's a known problem, and it's been said to not attempt flashing older SBF images to a device running 4.5.629.
All you can do now is basically pray that there will be a leak of the 4.5.629 SBF image.
I was so sad!help me

What I find weird about the D2G is that I've been able to freely SBF betwen 4.5.608 and 2.4.33 to suit my radio hacking needs. Motorola must have done some serious voodoo to prevent SBF'ing back from 4.5.629
There was no “voodoo” involved. They updated the bootloader. That's all.
But what can I do now?

Wait and pray that the 4.5.629 SBF image will be leaked someday.

There never has been, nor will there ever be an ETA for leaks on SBF & FXZ files. One day, a diligent developer might stumble upon the file when looking through Motorola's servers. That's it. If we get an SBF it'll be purely by accident.
If you really need a new phone, go get a different phone, because for the foreseeable future you will not be able to unbrick your D2G
I just tried to update but for some reason the update failed, my phone is rooted can that be the reason? I updated to the new android market just before the update maybe that is the reason? Will try to downgrade the market app and then try again, also the new market brakes that top button to go directly to android market in app trey.
You cannot update if you have CWM installed, or have any of the preloaded applications frozen.
u can't downgrade the rom with any old sbf after you installed .629 ota ..The only thing you can do is wait until the. 629 sbf is leak ...

Help me. After update .629 flash rom SBF 2.4.33 (2.4.29) phone bricked.
Good job. There is no way to unbrick, as you might have read above. Stop posting the same question without reading the thread prior to it.
I don't know if anyone who has bricked trying to revert is willing to try flashing this file, but it couldn't hurt.
It is the signed Hardware Secure bootloader only SBF file for the D2G.
I don't believe anyone has released this file, but I haven't been following D2G development much lately.
It's possible this file would allow reverting of the bootloader to D011 with the signed mbmloader as a separate file. I actually doubt it will work but it can't make anything worse than it already is if it's soft bricked.
Good luck!
Can this file be used to downgrade to older SBF file? Has anyone tested it?
As I said, I don't think this file will work but I do think it's worth trying anyway, given someone already has a soft bricked device, it won't make matters any worse.
VZW seems to be aware of the problem and are replacing soft bricked phones from the update under warranty.
If someone wants to try it so we can definitively prove it doesn't work, then that seems like a reasonable choice.
This is some serious bad news for D2G owners!!
My OTA Update went through fine (Thankfully I had restored all the bloat and unrooted my phone before the update). But now I am unable to root my phone.. Stuck with all the bloatware.. Any way to re-root my D2G?

A 4pda member used it to flash 4.5.608 successfully after a brick he got during stock update (NOT during an attempt to SBF back).
He got
Code:
Bootloader
D0.11
Err:A5,70,00,00,23
when the phone rebooted during OTA update application, and could flash this bootloader SBF over that. After that, he flashed the 4.5.608 SBF and the device works again.
