Screen recording - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a feeling that there was a way to record screencast on Note without installing any app, but can't find it. Could someone point me to the solution? Or maybe I have to root and install sth for this?

Try pressing "Power" button and "Volume up" button together...
Forgot to add: I don't remember exactly where I see this feature, it maybe a jelly bean only feature or GN 10.1 only feature or both.

I just got this device a week ago, so far the only way i can see to record what your doing is in S Note if you were using a certain template.
If you found a way (without rooting the device), please update this thread.

Maybe you are right and it was Jelly Bean's feature - I had Jelly Bean on another tablet, maybe I saw it there. Or I thought screen capture in Note works like screen recording.

screen records works in S note only

Screen recording comes with JB for Note 10.1, so either flash the leaked OTA or be patient a bit longer =)

Patient as in wait for Jelly Bean update?

Yeah. The feature is in the N8000 jellybean. So you gotta flash that or wait for the N8013/10 jellybean update.

That's cool, which brings a follow up question, is that a JB or a Samsung fw feature?

I'm guessing Sammy since I haven't seen any mention of it on any other jb device. But I was wrong once before back in '95 so it's time again.

Thanks to all! So I had to see it in JB video and thought it was already in Note 10.1. I'll wait for the update, no rush here (it would just make it easier to make gameplay videos of my games).

The only thing that I don't like about that screen recording is that it is also records the sound from the microphone, so be careful of what you're saying when gaming

Unfortunately, yes =)
And I have no idea how to turn the mic of when recording. Hopefully Samsung will fix a way to disable it before JB hits us officially

I think they left it out on purpose, I read on another thread somewhere that they took it off possibly for legal reasons I.e. Copyright (films etc). Samsung did however tell someone who emailed them regarding the feature that they will include it in a future update.

If it was for legal reasons, why hasn't every screen recording app on the PlayStore been pulled/removed?

This would be a cool app to have.
you might be able to find one that uses a volume button, like the iphone. im not sure you can have one that uses the power button as it would end up turning off the screen every picture. i dont know of any camera replacements anyways.
sorry am new to Andriod ,.... so pls forgive .......

The sheer size of the Infuse makes use of the hardware power button helpful. When holding the device to take a picture, it is easier to hold the edges and tap the power button than holding it and tapping on the screen. For me anyway.
I can chip in my two cents worth and say a unnamed Dev was working on getting power button shutter working on the infuse a few nights ago. So in due time maybe we will see a thread with a modified camera.apk. They were having issues keeping the phone from going to lockscreen, so maybe after the holiday weekend we might see results. Overheard on irc.

Thoughts on the ICS leak?

So for those of you that have ICS up and going on your skyrockets... What do you think so far?
I personally am seeing more responsiveness of my device. On GB it was a little sluggish and then I kinda got used to it, and now that I have ICS it's so much better. Apex Launcher is WOW on it.
My battery has lasted much, much longer too, and I've been doing tons of stuff on it this morning.
Can't wait for a rom based on stock ICS.
i like it but my home button wont work even after reodining and factory resetting any ideas

Can you guys download anything from the market?
Working now...not sure what the issue was...
A couple notes
1. I can't figure out how to take a screenshot now.
2. What's the home button problem? Like...in an app and hit home and nothing happens? Or can't use the home button to enter into d/l mode to flash CWM?
I have the latter; I can't enter into d/l mode to flash CWM now.
Edit: Wait...I might have it now. D/l mode, that is.
Edit: N/m. That was stock recovery. Any ideas how to get into d/l mode so I can flash CWM?

The other thread pointed out that taking a screenshot on ICS is done by holding one of the volume buttons along with the power button. So it's change from the home button in GB to the volume button in ICS.

I have to use XpressConnect to connect to my work WiFi and when I d/l'd it, it was from Market and didn't stick. Then updated to Play, d/l'd again and everything is kosher.
Just having issues getting into D/l mode again to flash CWM.
Were any of you experiencing bluetooth connection problems? I am suffering from the well reported issue of intermittent bluetooth connections and drops.
Im curious/helpful that ICS may fix this issue...

Yeah, I read that on another forum as well but all it does is make my volume go up or down, depending on which volume button I hit. lol
Does it work for you?
Edit: NVM. Got it. Volume down + Power. A little finicky at first, it seems.
Power off and Restart from Device options menu are not working for me, they just hang and I have to pull battery. Otherwise everything else seems to be working.
Powering down phone freezes. And the market is constantly force closing. I have tried fixing permissions. Reflashing. Not in that order of course. Nothing is working for me.

smart stay

OK guys I am on ICS 4.2F-6B on my skyrocket, the smart stay app will not open and says the beta testing is over...any ideas how I can get this to work? Also the screen keeps flashing no front camera detected, however the front camera works when I go into the camera. Why would this be flashing on the screen?
Sorry to be such a newbie, but I guess we all have to start somewhere!
Try this one: http://www.mediafire.com/?5wokm0nh8ym9vza
Seems the guy who made smart stay has it rigged to turn off on certain dates as a beta.

No this one is just for when your screen timeout time runs out, if it see's two eyes looking at it then it will keep the screen on.

Most likely it's your voice app or Talkback from your Settings >> Accessibility.

(Mod) Enable/Disable shutter sound option in camera (how to)

I used and found this mod in the Sprints Galaxy S3 forum. I did not see this posted here so I wanted to share this. I take no credit for this. This was done by Freeza and by s3.Zeke.
What you have to do is use an app like root explorer and change the following lines in /system/csc/feature.xml
Edit the following:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>false</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
Change the "false" to true. Save the changes and exit.
Reboot your phone and now you can toggle if you want shutter sound in options.
Remember you have to reboot your phone or it will not show up.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
An easier way, for me was:
Open Root Explorer
Navigate to System>media>audio>ui
Mount R/W
Scroll down to 'Shutter.ogg'
Rename to 'Shutter.ogg.bak'
Profit!
I've done this on both stock and Beans B14. I haven't tried it on AOSP, so the file structure may be different, but the idea is the same. (The file was called 'Camera_shutter.ogg' on the Thunderbolt.)

While this idea turns the sound off, you have to go through all the steps to change it every time. The OP's way allows you to toggle it on and off inside the camera's options. So you wouldn't need to go through all the steps every time you want to turn it on or off.

The settings menu is not showing the sound toggle, although the device was rebooted and the 'true' value is confirmed.

That's crazy. So Verizon actually removed that option with the update? I can't even think of anyway that would benefit them. I can confirm the T-Mobile version still has it on the latest update. Bizarre.

Its not a matter of benefit its a matter of perverts taking pictures and video with no one knowing. Its actually illegal in some states to disable the sound due to these retards that cant get their own woman and have to take pictures and video home to their computers to wack it too.

Thanks for this, works great on MA2! Just a note, make sure you properly set permissions of the saved feature.xml file. ES typically created a backup of the original file, and doesn't properly set permissions on the new edit, and this mid won't work until you correct that.

Control the volume buttons?

Hi! I'm not sure where to put this, but I think it's an app I'm after so I'll make a try here.
Is there any way, like an app, to control the volume buttons? I change the volume accidently all the time, actually I rarely ever want to change it since this is a wifi only version and I I find the system sounds just disturbing. So turning them off completely would be nice, and I've searched for a app to do this but no luck yet.. A small widget to replace the power button sure ain't hard to find so it must be possible.
Thanks in advance!

I have no idea what you mean but there ain't a way to turn off the buttons in the settings as far as I can see. And that's my problem, I know how to change the volume without using the buttons, there's even apps for that like the one linked above. But I've not found any to turn off the buttons, preferably all the time except for when it change the media volume but it's not the end of the world if I have to do that manually in the device as well..

Congrats you helped this person exactIy 0%....
1.He stated he didnt know if he had placed his post in the right section ,he didnt ask where he should have placed it.
2.Why reply at all with an abscence of an answer, ie: "But I dont know of any app for that" .If everyone who didnt know of an "app for that" posted, the post would be 4,000 pages long....just stay on the sidelines.
3.OP didnt ask what YOU wanted/needed..."Never wanted needed something like that"
4.Your thinly veiled condemnation of his misfingering his device (accidentally adjusting the volume) is completely uncalled for.
MODS: My apologies if I am out of line.
OP: I would think a mod rather than an app might be what you seek.Apps being more device universal.Try the Themes section.Lotta mods there.

Well I suppose it's good to know next time how to think when posting a new thread, I use different forums all the time but I'm not used to this "is it a question, post it in Q&A no matter the topic". To me every thread should be posted in the section that best describes the subject no matter if it's a question or not but that's obviously not the case here.

Hmm, I was worried about that but since there seems to be an app for everything now I thought there might be that for this as well. I know that I'm not the only one with this problem, and besides many with me think that the buttons are turned upside down when you use the device on portrait mode like I do now. If I have it turned with camera facing to the right seen from the screen side volume up is down and if I rotate it 180 degrees I can't hold and it while typing without accidently pressing the buttons.
Actually I think the button to adjust the system sounds is useless on a wifi-only device, but that's a different story. So to get back to topic, I suppose this mod can't be done without rooting the device first?

There's an app called volume locker which locks your volume unless you confirm any changes due to pressing buttons.

Thanks, this will do the trick! It may not be just what I was looking for but it sure is better than nothing.
