[HowTo] Radio/Modem 3G/H+/Signal Problems in ICS/JB Fix - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I'm live in Argentina and here the basebands are 850/1900 MHz.
There is only 3G connection and I have a big problem with ICS. With Stock 2.3.5 Modem 3G connection works fine and the signal is good, everything is fast and without cuts but when I installed 4.0.4 I have tried all the radios and all roms and none work well. With all the radios the connection always go bad. When I do a "ping" a host, I lost more than half of the packets.
Anyone know if I can use the 2.3.5 radio on ICS ? Anyone have my problem? I can use radios from other devices on my Skyrocket?
I wish I expressed the problem well, sorry for my little English.
UPDATE 08/14/2012:
After many many attempts I could solve. (at least for JB)
The joy I have is immense, the bug was somewhere in ICS.
1 - Wipe data / Factory reset
2 - Back to Android GB 2.3.5 via ODIN
3 - Install TWRP Recovery via ODIN http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28720265&postcount=262
4- Install UXCLF3 Modem (Rat Unlocked) http://d-h.st/yf2 (seanzscreams)
5- 3X Wipe data / Factory reset
6- 3X Wipe Dalvik Cache
7- 3X Format System
8 - Install JB AOKP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1881994
9 - Install gapps7-26 http://goo.im/devs/R4INS/gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip
10- Wipe Caches and voilà ...
(Note that I did not install ICS at any time)

Now it works fine "Use only 2G networks" on AOKP and certainly in CM10.

have you tried mohan's rom?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1855349
i really don't know much about the issue you're having but i do know that mohan provided a bunch of different radios with his rom so maybe you can give those a try.

Yes, all the radios have the same problems.

The UCKJ2 modem works fine in GB but does not support ICS. I tried all variations of Cyanogenmod, AOKP, Leaks and all the stock roms. All radios and roms convinations possible. Too many months ago that I have this problem and can not find solution. I've already read all XDA and have not found anything. It seems like almost everyone here has LTE connection to anyone concerned about this issue. I can not believe that Samsung has developed a modem so poor! Or is it a kernel problem? I also tried different kernels. I'm really starting to believe that there is no solution.

Try this first: http://www.mediafire.com/?3t2u95zqlcvtq66
If that one isn't working good for you try this one:

I have to confess that UVLG3, seems to have better signal, but the problem remains the same, slow connection and packet loss. How I can know which modems are compatible with the Skyrocket? Any chance of some modem port i9000 even if I lose the LTE connection? Thanks.

The 2 modems I linked are from t989 which is the same as the skyrocket minus LTE so it should have better 3g. I'm pretty sure i9000 modems wont work and may cause a lot of issues.
Try dialing *#2263# in 1 of them modems I gave you and choose a specific band under WCDMA, if you get signal go out and test speeds. It may be that your phone is connecting to a weaker frequency which may cause the issues. Besides that I really don't see a reason why you'll have so many issue with this phone and other work unless your phone itself is malfunctioning. Try using a sim of a different phone provider with preferably different bands.

In Argentina the basebands are 850MHz and 1900MHz, the only three companies we have here, working with the same frequencies. In theory AT & T uses the same bands as us. I've tried the 3 companies in my phone and the same thing happens. In GB all is perfect but something is failing in ICS.
Some library or something is wrong and I refuse to go back to GB.
JB does not work in some cities, but that's a topic for another time as it is still very alpha.
Thanks for your help, I'm very frustrated, I have a special appreciation to the phone because it was a gift from my father. He passed away this April 28.

First of all I'm sorry for your dad.
Second you can do 1 of 2 things(or both if the first one wont work):
1) Use odin to flash stock GB on your device then update it to ICS again via kies. Maybe something in the process last time got messed up and doing a fresh start would fix it.
2) Simply stick to any of the GB roms, most of the things if not all should work just fine on it.

Hola hermanito, what was the JB rom that you used? The link above is referring to this post.
Gracias

Will doing this allow you to select 2g or turn off lte if on att using cm10 without manually network selection?

Check the APN settings for your mobile carrier. I had problems immediately after flashing miui.us 9.21 but once I set the right APN I now have stable 4G.

[Q] Radio on Superlite 5.1

Hey Folks,
Quick question about the radio functioning in MHX Superlite 5.1.
I'm a rogers user, and while the included radio (ucalc4) provides excellent sound quality and speed.. it seems that periodically the radio locks up and stops sending/receiving until a reboot.
I tried searching through the thread and didn't find where this was addressed?
Can someone point me in the right direction?
And yes the baseband shows unknown after flash.
Thanks !
Hey I'm a rogers user too and I found the way for the baseband to stick is to go into general and download the ics radio then bootinto cwm and do dark side wipe. While still in recovery flash radio after that data/factory reset cache wipe and dalvik cache wipe then install your rom (super lite) then wait 30 seconds after flash hen fix permissions and reboot! Worked for me may seem excessive but you will get a super clean flash

Awesome.
I recently reverted to GB to get my radio back. But while I was reading today realised that Instagram doesn't work on ICS.. Now I am hesitant to re-flash to ICS until this is fixed. I like my instagram...
Thanks for the reply
forget it.. I don't care about instagram.. Can you link me to the modem you used?

Phone stays in Roaming mode.

I've Installed this yesterday, but I'm experiencing a couple of bugs.
I first did a format (disk + dalvic),
then flashed Codename Android v3.3.2
then Camera + Backlit Fix
and then Codename Android GAPPS
Because I have a S-on device, I flashbooted the boot.img from the CA Gapps zip. (other zips didn't have that file)
Everything works very smoothly, but the errors/bugs I encounter are:
4. When I insert my SIM-card, I'm always Roaming, untill I enable WIFI, then I can make phonecalls.
So when WIFI signal is lost, I'm at Roaming and mobile-internet doesn't work.
Does other people have these issues, or is it because of a wrong Boot.img I flashed?

Since I don't want to post this in the dev section anymore, I'll continue here.
This problem first started with Codename Android.
When I install an other ROM; for example Blindbean, the problem stays.
Then I tried MIUI from Shrome, same problem.
(always with format disk and clean dalvik cache)
This night I installed the ICE-DS v4.4 ROM, and everything works fine again.
But when I install Blindbean again, problem is back.
You guys have any idea how this is possible.
Boot.img isn't suppose to be in gapps. Should be inside the rom itself.
When flashing a new rom always do a full wipe.

Ok, so I did again couple of hours of googling and stuff, and found some interesting stuff.
In our country, we have 3 mobile networks with their own towers. (proximus, mobistar, base)
But 2 of them rent these towers to other carriers. (mobistar for example to Telenet)
It appears Jellybean (I have it on every JB rom) sees a difference between the carrier and the tower-network. (If you get my point)
So I have to enable Roaming to be able to use my carriers network.
So far I can see, no additional costs.
But this still is a strange bug, that started with JB.

Trying to fix LTE

Hey guys, I have my HOX running AOKP JB 1.3 (found here) and have noticed that my LTE doesn't work. I only have an HSPA mobile connection.
Now in the FAQ's it says this:
**Q: No LTE?**
**A: Flash to a 4.0.3 based ROM, then flash AOKP**
Unfortunately, I'm such a noob I don't know exactly what that means. At first I assumed Android, but now I'm thinking it's the HTC Sense??
Digital fingers in the right direction greatly appreciated.
You assumed correctly just flash a 4.0.3 Rom, then flash cm. (After wiping of course)

4.0.3 refers to the "base" version of android that a given ROM is built from.
Try flashing CleanRom 4.0 - it is based on android 4.0.3 You can find it here: http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=161
Here is what I did (I'm on att)...it worked for me, I can't guarantee it will work for you and I am not responsible if you end up with a brick
1) Hop on over here and download cleanrom 4.0 standard edition (towards the bottom )
http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=34
2) Reboot your phone to recovery, factory reset, wipe cache, dalvich cache
3) Install the cleanrom 4.0 you downloaded above
4) Restart your phone and make sure you have lte (no need to set up accounts or anything)
5) Boot to recovery, factory reset, wipe cache, dalvich cache
6) Install aokp jb 1.3
7-28) Enjoy
You might be able to start with step 0.5 and backup your current rom/settings and restore to that backup in step 6 instead of reinstalling jb 1.3 as the above method will reset your phone and remove your current setup.
This method did not require me to change apns or dial *#*#4636#*#* or anything.
Good luck!
Thanks guys. I'm downloading CleanROM as we speak. so I've got my fingers crossed. Will update upon completion.
hmm, well saw the 4G symbol on my status bar with CleanROM, but not the LTE symbol so maybe my specific area (Macon, GA) doesn't have LTE at the moment and just that super duper HSPA 4G thing, lol. oh well. it was fun! thanks anyways for the help guys! yall are awesome!
Thought I'd retry an old thread. I had AOKP like 6 weeks ago and LTE worked great. Recently I have been using CR4.5Dev, CR4.5, or CM10. All of them I have had no problems with LTE.
Went to flash AOKP today and had no LTE. Remembered I had to come from a 4.0.3 ROM, so I flashed CleanRom 4.0 and booted up to check my LTE. Worked great. Went back and flashed AOKP. No LTE. I tried deleted the APN and reinserting it with no luck.
Going to try to re-reflash CR, and then flash AOKP for the 3rd time and hope for the best.
I can't live without LTE in San Diego. HSPA+ doesn't work on my drive home for streaming because it's way over used.

[Q] Wifi Issues

I would have posted this in the Sensation Android development area, but I don't have sufficient privileges to do so.
I no longer have WiFi.
I am using the 4.1.2 CM Kang, and I originally had WiFi working with that ROM, but it stopped working about a weeks ago, and I can't get it to come back.
If I watch the Wifi on/off toggle, I can see it blink white for a split second then return to grayed out about once every 5-10 seconds.
I've checked the WiFi settings, and the only thing that looks peculiar is that the region code under Advanced says "Europe," but when I try to change that, it just reverts.
I have tried a factory data reset,re-flash of the ROM, and installing newer versions of the ROM with no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I tried to install WiFix Manager, and I followed the directions closely, but WiFi still will not turn on.
The country code always reverts back to Europe in the Advanced WiFi Settings.
I'm on T-Mobile US, running AOKP aokp_pyramid_unofficial_Oct-19-12.zip; a JB ROM; 4.1.2
I previously tried the CM10 Kang for the HTC Sensation, but switched ROMs to make sure that it wasn't issue with the ROM.
To be clear, my problem is not that the WiFi radio never locks to a particular signal, it's that the WiFi radio won't even turn on.
When I go to WiFi settings it just says, "Turning on WiFi...," and never actually turns on.
My best guess was that it had something to do with the WiFi country code, but that's really just a stab in the dark; open to suggestions.
Thanks

In order of easiest and quickest to longest time it will take to do each one...
Install the latest version of the ROM (10/23) overtop of your existing rom (5 minutes)
If that doesn't work...
Do a full wipe and install a fresh copy of the latest version. (15 minutes, with Nandroid backup)
If that doesn't work...
Format your SD card (save all the contents to your computer first) (40 minutes between copying every to the computer and back to the SD card)
NON ROM RELATED OPTION IF YOU ARE S-OFF
Reinstall your firmware as it's possible something got messed up. You will have to boot to recovery after this and wipe cache and dalvik or you will get bootloops. (5 minutes, but a little more involved)
My guess is that the full wipe and fresh install is the most likely to work the first time.

is there a sensation specific guide for this procedure?
Still perplexed
How do I know which kernel and radio combination should work best with my ROM. I switched out to AOKP to see if that was the problem, and I believe I'm using the 3.33 Kernel, but I don't know how to check to make sure it installed correctly.
Had the same problem as you but a full wipe and reflash would bring it back. Seems to be a CM10 problem since it happens with Bruce's and Paranoid roms. Try a Sense rom and see if wifi works.
Is OpenSense considered a "Sense ROM?"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1926858
Try that rom, more stable and better performance than all the popular roms.
I had the same problem only option was another room Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.8.0 (this is the rom)
so long, and thanks for all of the fish...
I figured it out.
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S III. WiFi is working again.
Thanks for all of the help!
wifi cm10
I have tried several CM10 roms. It is as you said about the region code. It reverts back to the original and doesnt save it on the settings
Even though editing db file doesn't work. Actually it changes the country code. I guess the ROM changes it during booting. Because while it boots you can see that the wifi is connecting first then goes off. I have tried several roms. DOnno what the problem is. probably JB both on cm10 and aokp

[Q] HTC One M8 Verizon - Radio band missing after messing with phone info settings

Hi Guys.
Short info:
- before: HTC One M8 Verizon, Android 4.4.4 (RUU M8_VZW 4.4.4), rooted, S-OFF, Super CID, TWRP 2.8.3.0
- after: HTC One M8 Verizon, Android 4.4.4 (Viper OneM8 3.2.1), rooted, S-OFF, Super CID, TWRP 2.8.3.0.
Few hours ago I finished "converting" HTC One M8 Verizon from 4.4.4 to T-Mobile version, successfully installing Viper OneM8 3.2.1 over 4.4.4 RUU firmware, as described in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2710720
The main reason for the above was lack of LTE services under Verizon firmware (I live in Europe).
Finished installing Viper ROM, configuring phone, restored content (apps, contacts, settings etc) - part of it manually. LTE still not available, and continued to verify.
In the end I started to check Viper Tweaks section, and finally got to Misc - Phone info. While there, I checked also Radio bands, and I was stuck in the radio menu, with only 3 options (US Radios, 900-, 1900-). Had to select one to continue, and ... the winner was 900-. Instantly lost GSM signal and never came back.
Just to be nicer, after reboot (normal reboot), 900- option disappeared from Radio bands in Phone info advanced menu, and never came back. No matter what I did.
What I did try (all with full wipe / formatting etc):
- resetting Viper ROM
- reinstalled Viper ROM
- reverting to RUU M8_VZW 4.4.4 nandroid backup (saved before first installing Viper ROM).
- reverting to clean RUU M8_VZW 4.4.4 firmware
- flashed 4.4.4 radio from this topic: forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/development/radios-0-89-20-0222-t2824882
- reverting to Viper One ROM, this time installed with T-Mobile version. Same outcome, different message: "error er05 invalid sim".
Error messages stepped on:
Constant: "The SIM card is from an unknown source"
From time to time: "your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network."
If I tried to select GSM network and search for operators (manually / automatic): "No network found. Select "Yes" to switch to global mode, or Select "No" to stay in current mode." And "Error searching for networks" / "No networks found".
The only thing that did not have possibility to check (yet): SIM card health.
UPDATE: SIM card checked and OK, phone registered finally (T Mobile version of Viper One had also "Auto" option under Radio band, in Phone info hidden menu! ).
Still working on this, managed to solve it while compiling this post, but still have the question: what have I done so wrong, and how can I get back to the "good" setting? Is the radio band setting so resilient to full format, several ROM's and resets, even radio firmware change?!
I will revert with updates!
Thanks!
I've been into your position. It seems different ROMs have different options in phone menu. My guess is it depends on what source the rom is built from. There's a threads here on XDA showing how to unlock other bands of the phone. And t stays that way even after RUU. Here's mine

Vanshee, thanks for your inside.
What ROM are you on? How did you "unlock" all the band options in there? :cyclops:
As I said, I managed to solve the matter while was posting the topic. Seems that, after reflashing Viper OneM8 ROM, this time choosing T-Mobile US in Aroma, and not Default, I was able to select Auto in Radio band, and is working.
It still has no LTE in my region, and is also showing full signal all the time, even in places that I know having poor GSM signal. Everything else is working, at least until now.
Thanks again!
Ok i will give you 2 links for threads dealing with said unlocking of radio bands, but like most of the cool stuff here on xda you should be warned - any slight mistake could lead to hard brick. And a piece of advice - when start changing numbers in the needed moment following these guides - write down somewhere the original numbers you have. Or you will end like me - unlocking every possible band in order to bring back my signal to life. I'm serious dude - be very careful in following these guides.
You have been warned!!!

Hi im stuck on 2g on a verizon m8. I flashed the verizon version of the last kitkat based viper rom and chose tmobile as my carrier is GSM based (Orange Dominicana 900mhz 3g) i think thats what you meant, could yo please confirm?
but it did not solve my issue.

elander, that is correct. Initially I installed Viper ROM in default mode, after losing signal I tried RUU, nandroid restore etc. Finished with Viper in T-Mobile install, and that payed off.
I had not time since to try to unlock LTE as per vanshee's posts above, but will do it as soon as I will have some spare in my schedule.

I had not time since to try to unlock LTE as per vanshee's posts above, but will do it as soon as I will have some spare in my schedule.

Hi, I tried again and this time and it showed me the "automatic" band, and as of now I have connectivity which by the way seems to be a little faster than what it used to be (could be a placebo pill I took a few hours ago though ). Thanks for this.
I'm really confused and would like to know why this happened in the first place, I guess if I ever dare flash another rom it'd probably go back to being stuck on edge. I thought that Roms flashed thru recovery wouldn't touch anything regarding the radios, at least not the custom roms (which are normaly stripped from things that are meant to be on a firmware pack anyways), it had never happened to me before...
thanks again man.
Lost Signal while messing up with Phone Info settings
Hey I am facing the same issue here, ditto
I have flashed latest Viper ROM but don't see the Auto option in Phone Info settings.
How do I re-flash Viper in other than default mode as you described?
Doing it for the first time, please excuse.. Have already lost a couple of days sleep over this issue. Please help !!
Hey, does the T-Mobile version of Viper ROM for M8 work on Verizon? I did the same mistaje and now facing the same issue, I have updated my Firmware to latest 5.0.1 and now downloading Viper 4.3.0 T-Mobile version. Hope it works. I already tried Verizon version of Viper and it did not show automatic option in Phone Info Settings.
Fingers crossed
Update: Nope, didn't work. Viper ROM 4.3.0 T-Mobile variant did not work.
Resolved: So the issue was latest Viper ROM 4.3.0 doesn't give you an option to choose carrier(Verizon/Sprint/T-Mobile etc.) in Aroma, Viper has released a separate DL for Verizon M8. I learnt the hard way(downloading and flashing several ROMs) that any ROM that gives an option to choose carrier in Aroma during installation would enable the Automatic option in Phone Info Settings/Phone Testing App/ 4G Switcher App / Network app. So earlier version of Viper ROM probably 4.4.4 would have worked. A single Custom ROM download that supports Multiple Carriers is the solution missing Radio Band issue..
I downloaded GPE 5.0.1 on my 5.0.1 Stock Firmware to get my lost signal, relief !!
Careful, do not go for 5.1, GPE gives an option to upgrade your firmware and install Lollipop 5.1 , i tried and it didn't work but Firmware and ROM 5.0.1 work like a charm. Cheers!!
How did you choose T-Mobile US in Aroma?

Vanshee, thanks for your inside.
What ROM are you on? How did you "unlock" all the band options in there? :cyclops:
As I said, I managed to solve the matter while was posting the topic. Seems that, after reflashing Viper OneM8 ROM, this time choosing T-Mobile US in Aroma, and not Default, I was able to select Auto in Radio band, and is working.
It still has no LTE in my region, and is also showing full signal all the time, even in places that I know having poor GSM signal. Everything else is working, at least until now.
Thanks again!

hey gaurika,
Could you please guide me how did you choose T-Mobile US in Aroma while installing ViperOne Rom on your Verizon M8. I am in a similar no signal situation from past few days and have tried almost everything that I cam across in XDA.
I tried figuring out myself but unable to do it so far, I'm pretty noob. Much appreciate your reply. A setp-by-step info will be helpful
Update: Installed latest GPE ROM from the below thread and was able to get my signal back..
