Where are SMS files saved in Nokias? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm trying to create a backup of my texts on my computer, and I found one method that looks promising: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16490860&postcount=29
The only problem is the location given: ( \Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Stores\DeviceStore ) does not work. Does anyone know where SMS files get saved in the phone? Specifically a Lumia 900?
Should I cross-post this in the Lumia section?

No, there's nothing device-specific about the SMS storage; that's all Microsoft code that is identical on all WP7 devices. I'm not sure why you think that just because you can't access that file, there's somewhere else that the SMS would be. Do you not realize that on a stock, non-rooted phone your apps have access to only a tiny portion of the filesystem? Unfortunately, I don't believe anybody has found a way to root a Lumia 900 (the 710s and some 800s can be), although we're working on it. I any case, it's not currently possible to buckup SMS on a Lumia 900 using an app. MS really screwed over WP7 users on the backup front.

Problem with transferring duplicate sim contacts to phone ...

Hi guys ....
I just reflashed the phone with crc32 winmobile 6.1 version.
Normally I have in my SIM card duplicates like this (that came from my motorola before this):
name1 mobilephone1
name1 homephone1
name1 someotherphone1
name2 mobilephone2
name2 ...
and so on. I try to transfer them with SIM manager, select all, copy to phone, but the duplicates it either wants to overwrite or skip. that's over 50 entries, so it's pointless to copy by hand, I can forget something.
Is it possible to do real copy of them without losing data?
Second question: Is it possible to somehow correctly sync (SyncML protocol) to gsmsync.net ... I could not find any free tool, the only one I've found (that MIGHT) work asks for 60$ My Motorola V3X was able to do it out of the box ... really useful for synchronizations, since I'm not using ms windows on my computer.
Also, SyncML *might* be the solution, as on the syncml server all contacts are correctly organized
My phone is AT&T 8525 if this matters
thanks in advance

[Q] Proting SMS from Android to Windows Phone

Hey,
since I've seen that it became possible to backup up and restore SMS on Windows Phone (with backing up the store.vol), i was thinking if it could become possible to port SMS from Android to Windows Phone. Anyone an idea how to do that??

Currently this isn't possible. An interesting solution would be backing up the SMS messages to Gmail under a SMS label, then importing into Android under one of a couple of apps that do this already. The trick is getting a dev to write an app for WP7 that would complete the cycle.
I really do not have an idea of all this developing things, but my first thought was, that it "just" has be possible to backup the SMS of an Android device in the ".vol" format (or convert them into a ".vol" file), so can can just restore them on Windows Phones. Maybe its complete crap what I am talking about, but for me it sounds the easiest way .

I was describing a method that is already in place on Android. There are a few apps that back up SMS, MMS, and call logs to those respective labels in your Gmail account. All that needs to happen is for a WP7 dev to create an app which can process those "e-mails" under those labels and sort them to their proper places. This is much easier than having to load a file, since WP7 doesn't support .vol files.

[Q]A few newbie qustion about Costom Rom

1.Does we have any free unlock?
2.Can i edit rom by myself?
3.What program can extract&repack "Boot.img" and "boot.img.cert" ?
4.What program can repack or edit "*.xap" file ?
sorry for my bad English.
1. Custom ROMs come fully-unlocked, meaning that you can run any app, can install an arbitrary number of apps, all apps run with full permissions, and you can run native apps (required for things like Opera or BlueTooth File Transfer). They also come pre-configured with an app that will install XAP files you open in the phone's browser or email attachments (like my XapHandler app, but a built-in native app).
2. Yes, ROMs are very editable. This isn't my area of expertise, but there are plenty of resources for "chefs" (people who "cook up" ROMs) including guides and tool downloads. It's generally recommended to start from an existing custom ROM that is close to what you want.
3. I don't know for sure. It may depend on what kind of phone you're making custom ROMs for (HtcRIE is for HTC phones only, I think?) but I'm sure somebody has posted similar questions before so some searching may tell you what you need to know. As for certs, they're probably in a standard format for a cryptographic certificate (Windows can open them, although usually not edit them; there's a tool that ships with Visual Studio that can create them though).
4. .XAP files are just ZIP archives. You can open and edit and re-pack them with pretty much any tool that understands the ZIP format (I like 7-Zip, but there's many options). Marketplace (or in-ROM) XAPs may have a signature embedded in them too that isn't part of the archive contents, but I'm not sure how that works. A custom ROM probably wouldn't care.
Your English is a lot better than my Thai; you did just fine.

OK Thanks.
I have original firmware of lumia 900.
and I extract "RM808_12w08_4_prod_attus.esco" by winrar.
After I extract I got two file name "boot.img" and "boot.img.cert".
I can't find any program can edit them. Dose you have any program to edit them.
Ah... for a Lumia 900, I don't think it's possible to unlock the bootloader right now, so you wouldn't be able to install a modified ROM anyhow. Sorry; I though you were talking about one of the phones that is already supported for custom ROMs.
I don't have a Nokia, nor do I have any experience with hacking on them. There's a lot of buzz around unlocking the Lumia 710 and 800, but so far as I know nobody has managed the 900 yet. You should start with the thread about the unlock for the 800 (it's on the Lumia 800 part of the forum) and maybe see if there's anything similar being worked on for the 900. Also, if that ROM image isn't posted on XDA-Devs yet, I'm sure lots of people in the Lumia forums would like to see it, and some of them will be able to work with you much more than I can.

Ok Thank for answer.
OSBuilder is pretty much the only thing you need to edit/cook ROM's nowadays. It will dump that ROM you have. However since, like GDTD said, the Lumia 900 has a locked bootloader so it will do you no good. The best you can do right now with the 900 is dev unlock your phone.

Importing SMS messages

Hi,
How would I import a few thousand SMS messages from a non WP7 device(/xml/csv/etc) into a Lumia 710?
For instance is there a way to inject them into a WP7 phone backup database and restore that to the phone?
Or using WP7 Root Tools (if it's supported on the 710?)
Or perhaps some insertion method through Rainbowmod?
Has anyone successfully brought SMS messages onto the device?
Thanks!
I think it's impossible at least in an easy way...
But if you brave and experienced enough you can take a look at SMS Backup and how it stores the messages. With a lot of luck and skill, you might be able to get it working. But to be honest, chances are small and the sms messages must be really really important to try this painful excercise...
It's possible, with sufficient unlock level (on the Lumias, that probably means a custom ROM). There are some tools, such as SMS Backup, which are able to read and write the SMS database on the phone, but there are limits to their compatibility.

Yes that's true but you'd still need to create those dbs and SMSBackup rendered my hd2 unusable (had to flash over again), so I'm not really convinced at all.

How to backup developer unlocked WP7 with Win7x64 and the latest Zune version?

I'd like to know how to backup developer unlocked WP7 with Win7x64 computer and the latest Zune version?
I've now tried:
- WP7 Easy Updater -> didn't work. Gives me an error message and leads me to Microsoft's support site.
- Windows Phone 7 backup v.1.9 -> didn't work. Gives mw an error message "the input string was not given in the correct order..."
I've tried Zune4.7 dll for the later one -> same thing, didn't work
Is there a way to make a full backup of your unlocked/developer unlocked Windows Phone 7 with any (other) software? I'd need to replace the micro-SD card of my Dell Venue Pro from 32Gb to 64Gb and wouldn't like to loose the music I have in the isolated storages of some Marketplace apps. I've even tried Isolated Storage Spy tool but it doesn't allow to access to the isolated storages of Marketplace apps.
Any help is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!

I've just gone through the onerous process of trying to export my SMS messages from an original HTC Trophy (WP7.0) with Chevron unlock.
Things like SMSBackup don't work (target a higher version of Windows Phone, and hacking the xap manifest at best got the app deployed but not running). Backup programs like the ones you listed did nothing. Something called WPV App Data Backup at least connected and created a bunch of folders but they were all empty.
In the end (after literally years of on-and-off attempts) I gave up on the SMS messages and let Zune do its update. Turns out that Zune does a backup to "C:\Users\JohnCitizen\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update" (or your equivalent) before it applies any updates. It's not a FULL backup in the sense that I'd understand the term, but it includes the isolated storage of apps which seems to be your main concern.
If your phone is already up to date I'm not sure if there's a way to fake an update or force Zune to do a backup as if it were preparing for an update but that might be your best bet.
Side-note: the pleasant surprise was that I didn't need the backups anyway. I've applied 5 cumulative updates to bring the phone to WP7.10.7720 and it still has the SMS messages and app data (meaning I could apply the interop unlock and get my SMS messages out with SMSBackup after all!).

Thanks for the advice but the phone is already WP7.8862 so it cannot be updated anymore. But I've tried both of the aforementioned apps and neither of them seem to work
Another possibility I've been thinking is a sort of "blind copy" of micro-SD if that's possible if the backup of Marketplace apps (and their isolated storages) is not possible. Well, I'm willing to try just about everything to save the music that I have in my phone. It'd be really painstaking and time consuming to download all that music (once again) to my phone after replacing the micro-SD card.
Speaking about your phone, why haven't you installed a custom ROM to it? I've installed custom ROMs to my HTC 7 Pro (Dynamics 2.2) and to my Nokia Lumias (Lumiatrix, don't remember the version right now). And my LG Quantum I've unlocked with the registry code. Makes a life a whole lot easier. Too bad no-one has found a way to port a custom ROM to Dell Venue Pro since I already would've done it. Well, developer unlock will do then...

Originally because I wanted to backup/export my SMS messages. Now I've finally worked that out I don't really care about the phone. Windows Phone is a horrible pile of sh** compared to what Windows Mobile was, much less what Android is now, is so I have no desire to waste any more time on it.

Yeah, you're right. Android is much closer to Windows Mobile than Windows Phone is.
But the reason why Windows Phone and iPhone are so closed systems, is their information security.
Android is quite open system compared to those two aforementioned ones.
I do have some Android devices but I've still decided to stick with Windows Phone. It's the best (well at least for me) OS for business purposes.
Just looking for a Windows Phone 8.x device with the physical QWERTY and possiblity to jailbreak it...
Back to subject: I'd really appreciate if someone could give me a hint how to get those two already mentioned backup apps to work with the latest Zune version, WP7.8 & WIN7 x64.
RE: SMS BACKUP Application
i need SMS backup xap file for lumia 710 dev unlocked mobile.
software version 7.8, make: nokia.
i cannot flash or try interop unlock methods, i tried loading xap files by removing INTEROPSERVICE in capabilities, app loaded successfully, but raised exception when app is loaded n crashed.
please suggest if any registry/policy editing steps through windows phone device manager or if any steps...
Any help is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!
