Cracked screen - I need to recover my files - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I cracked the screen of my nexus s 4g and I need to recover files off of the internal memory. My phone is/was rooted, but I disabled USB debugging. Does anyone have any thoughts as to how I can recover my data?

You should be able to use all the same commands over fastboot as in adb. So instead of "adb pull" you can use "fastboot pull"

can u get into recovery and mount it that way to yank it off there

I can get into recovery, but without a screen I can't tell what I am doing. Can someone give me the key sequence to mount the SD card?

2x Up, power button, 2 up, power. <----- That should mount you if you're using CWM 5.8.x.x

Just to clarify, I hold power and vol+ to boot into CWM. I then hit down twice and power to boot into recovery, correct? Then I perform what you posted? I am not sure what ver of cwm I have, It might be 5.0.2.0.
Thanks for helping with this!

I tried D,D,P,U,U,P,U,U,P and this did not work

VOL + & PWR brings you to fastboot.
Press VOL- 2 times, then power. Wait a bit for recovery to boot.
Now it depends if you have a touch recovery or not. The menus are slightly different!
CWM 5.0.2.0 (non touch)
Press VOL- 6 times. Press PWR once. Now you're in mount menu.
Press VOL+ 2 times. Press PWR once. Now you mounted the USB storage.
If no drive pops up on your computer, unplug and replug the USB cable.
CWM 5.8.0.2 touch and newer
Press VOL- 5 times. Press PWR once. Now you're in mount menu.
Press VOL+ 2 times. Press PWR once. Now you mounted the USB storage.
Hopefully you have a version of CWM that doesn't have a problem mounting USB.

I'm not that familiar with the other CWM below 5.8. Sorry I couldn't help much.

No problem. Sucks when you're stuck for something like that.

recover lost files easily
Don't worry! The data is not really deleted even though they become invisible for you.
You should stop using it to store files once you realize that you have made a mistake. The only one important thing is to find a powerful data recovery software to help you find your lost data back easily. I recommend you to use 321soft data recovery software, you can have a try!

Saved!
This worked for me - Thanks a lot for posting this! Saved my wife's photos (PHEW!)

You need to pull the battery, put it back, and try one of the button combinations to get it into download mode on next boot. Your easiest route is either both volume buttons, and plug in USB without pressing power (which works on the Captivate), or hold just volume down and plug in USB (which is the right combination for an i9000). With one of these the phone should automatically power into the download mode. Get Odin one click ready to flash stock before you put the phone into download mode and hit start when it recognizes the device. If that won't work. try the other key combinations keeping in mind that they change when you flash an i9000 image, so you should try all Captivate combinations, and all i9000 combinations. Since the Captivate lacks a physical home button, anything that involves that will not work, which is the reason why you are stuck in recovery. The i9000 recovery is expecting you to press the home button to select (unlike the power on the stock Captivate).
also, ADB commands should work while the phone is in recovery mode
Same Problem
The Key combination Vol +, Vol - and the power button power cycles the phone whether or not the phone is in recovery mode or off. I am having the same problem, and there are no key combinations that worked for me. For now, I am permanently stuck in recovery mode. I could use some help here, as I have tried everything.
Oh, for the I9000 ROM installed on the captivate, adb commands do not work. While the phone is in recovery mode, you cannot connect to the PC.
I have found though, that by booting into the recovery menu, plugging in your USB cord and then taking out/putting in the battery will put into an unknown upload mode which does connect it to the computer, but not in a way that allows Odin or adb to run. There might be a way to flash/work with the phone, but I don't know how. Any help would be appreciate, as it is not in disk mode.

1. Take out battery and put it back in
2a Hold Vol Up+Vol Down (Do not press power)
or
2b Hold Vol Down (Do not press power)
3. Plug in USB cable connected to computer (Still do not press power)
If the phone behaves like a Captivate, after using 2a and 3, you should be in download mode. If the phone behaves like an i9000, after 2b and 3, you should be in Download mode.
Response & Update
Have tried both of these options. Either way you do it, the phone still goes back into recovery mode. There was talk about using a custom kernel that would allow you to use the power button as the select button. Is there any way to use adb in recovery mode, so you can install the modified kernel, or reboot to download mode? If not, I started a thread on this question that can be found here as well:

The 2e and 3e Download and Recovery modes were disabled by Samsung in later models of the SGS. It is not possible to get there using a combination of buttons etc.,

There may be another method using an AnyWay JIG cable: which is a MicroB USB to Standard USB connector where I think one crosses pin 3 and 4 with a 301kOhm resister 1% tolerance, 1/4Watt. It would be best to search this forum for precise instructions.
Win for a dumb f%^k
well this isnt a good answer but i have a phone that went as discribed, no respose to three button, and unable to flash or get off the system reset screen on start up work on it for about 6 hour then left it when i came back i turned it on plug in the usb and CMD'ed adb reboot download and what did you know this time it worked? reset from that screen and it return to normal sooo.... um good luck and there is a way out just not shore what exactly it is
good for some
okey after fidling around i found my phone responded to adb ie download adb open a cmd line and typing adb reboot download. from there i just cycled the power hold down the power button a while and it rebooted to normal working order. though i still cant get 3 button even with flashing the fix so no hacking for me hope this helps
I'm using the Samsung Fascinate, i500 and i got stuck on the same screen too!!! i just double tapped the home button and rebooted the phone
I was able to get out of a 2e loop by running adb reboot download with odin open, then reflashed from there. Went through the same process twice since cognition 2.3b8 does not want to install on my phone. had no problem with b7 install.
Instructions were not that great. But Thanks -I figured it out and am back up.
Same problem here, cant make my phone go to download mode, ok or select key "power button" not working.
already tried the 2 methods before and they not working, (combination of keys)
Vibrant stuck in android system recovery 2e
I know this is not exact help but i just accidentally found myself into download mode after more key combo fiddling. I believe the last combo that got me in was either holding UP + POWER or just UP at the precise moment the screen goes black to reboot. This is after quite a few boot cycles so trial and error seemed to pull it off.
I'd test it again to be more sure but i don't want to risk being stuck again at this point. But I figured i'd speak up now, because i don't plan to have 2e there ever again.

power button doesn't work either? I thought that functioned as the 'enter' button... Imnuts' post will work for sure, but I have to ask why are you in the stock android recovery? unless you meant CWM?
Thanks imnuts, what is the easiest way to adb reboot?
My screen is showing similar to the attached photo but the trackball statement it instead says: [Enter: Home Key, Select : Vol UP / Vol Down
Its asking me to use the home key for my enter but my home key is not functioning. But if you know of an alternative I am happy to hear what your thoughts are.

ADB (Android Debug Bridge, I think) is tethering your phone to your pc and pushing/pulling files or forcing commands to your phone using the command terminal... it doesn't work right away as you need the latest android sdk files, java/jdk files, and altered C:/ path directory (assuming you're running windows, I think thats how it works if anyone can help me out here )
does the power button work as a 'select' button though? also can't you just battery pull and restart the phone or does it restart right into that recovery? just an FYI that is the stock android recovery which you can't (or rather shouldn't) be doing anything in, CWM is recommended... I vaguely recall there being another button that would work like the search button but I'm not sure
Thanks for the advise anoninja118, I appreciate the help.
So last night I tried ADB but was not successful at it, maybe ill look into that more. Unfortunately my phone does not allow the power button to work as the 'select' button. Yeah and pulling the battery leads me back to the same recovery screen. What is CWM?

CWM is Clockwork Mod, its the custom version of that recovery that will allow you to flash files and change options: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112804
you can flash superuser (what gives you root access) easily in there and just reboot and presto you're rooted... I haven't seen any tutorials on how to use CWM since its fairly easy, to boot into it just hold power+volume up+home until 'Samsung' appears then let go of power and hold the other two until it comes up, then use volume keys and power button to navigate and select
Odin is required to install CWM first though and this thread gives a little info on that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580

Enabling USB connection without using screen?

Hi all.
No threads seem to help.
I dont think usb debugging is enabled, my screens shattered and you can hardly see the screen on the phone, touch doesnt work at all.
Im running clockwork mod recovery but unsure which version.
Also Cyanogen Mod 9.
Anyhelp would be fantastic as id like my data off the handset.
Thanks, Kyle.
If your volume and power button work you should be able to boot into fastboot mode then recovery. Then from recovery you can mount your SD card.
It depends on which version of ClockworkMod you have, but if you have 5.0.2.0:
Boot your phone into fastboot mode by holding VOL + and pressing PWR
Wait until it's booted (a few seconds will suffice) then
Press VOL - 2 times to highlight Recovery then press PWR
Here, depending on the version of ClockworkMod you might have to wait a bit. 30 seconds should be enough. I know some take a bit to load hence this wait
Press VOL + 4 times to highlight Mounts and Storage then press PWR
Press VOL + 2 tmes to highlight mount USB storage then press PWR
Here you are in USB mounted mode. You can connect your USB cable and you should see the drive pop up in your computer. Cheers!

Step by Step tutorial needed performing nandroid

on a xoom i cannot see the screen on...
Dropped my xoom today, and the screen is unusable..however it still powers on and functions.
Was wondering if some1 could take the time to give me a "blind mans" step by step tutorial on doing a nandroid backup with clockworkmod.
Id like to do a back up...boot it up and pull the nandroid file from it via usb and restore it on my replacement tab.
What i need is after you boot into recovery, how many vol presses it takes to get to the nandroid and what combination of presses needed to successfully begin a nandroid.
this would be greatly appreciated.
Which recovery are you using? As this will greatly affect your decision. Team Rogue, the old tiamat, or the newer EOS?

Hey There,
reboot your xoom,
As soon as you hit reboot, you should see a Motorola logo appear. Wait 3 seconds and tap the Volume down button and the words Android Recovery should appear on the screen. When you see that, tap the Volume up button and you’ll boot into recovery.
Now from Recovery, using volume buttons, up and down, you can navigate up and down. The power button is to select your highlighted option.
so, once you are in recovery, use volume down button to go to "backup and restore"
press power button to enter that option.
select again backup, activate by pressing power button.
perform the backup. you will see a progress bar in the recovery bot. once done. reboot your system via recovery. (go back and reboot system now).
boot into xoom, thru file manager you will be able to see a directory under /sdcard called cwm or something like that. inside, you will see your backup compressed files.
download airdroid on the xoom, free app from the market, use it to pull that backup over wifi to your laptop or use direct usb cable to mount your xoom as external disk on the laptop.
Hope that helps.

You are on the old tiamat. Crap. I'm on the EOS one now. If I can find a zip flashable for the old tiamat one I can help you. But currently I do not have a laptop to flash files like recoveries onto the device through fastboot. Let me do some searching. See if I can find a zip for it.
--Sent from GlaDos baked potato
Edit: got the zip. Give me ten minutes to flash it and see what you need.
So once in recovery here is what to do for performing a nandroid:
press the down button 5 times,
press the power button once,
then press the power button again (it is now performing a nandroid), I'd leave it 15mins or so to be safe that it's actually completed considering you can't see.
Then in order to mount it to your PC so you can get the files across:
Press the down button 6 times,
Press the power button once,
Press the down button 8 times,
Press the power button once,
Then on your PC you should be able to see all the files on your SD card.
To power your xoom off:
Press down once,
Press the power button once,
Press up once,
Press the power button once,
Press up twice,
Press the power button once,
Your Xoom has now powered off

[Q] Failed to start recovery mode

Hi guys,
I have a problem to start in recovery mode, which means I can't flash roms and even re-root my tablets.
The major changes I did should be:
1. I un-root to firmware(not likely i guess)
2. I delete all the files in my tablet by connecting to a computer and select all items and press delete( perhaps I accidentally delete something that is important)
Now once I press power on/off with Vol down I can still access to 3 icons
I press Vol up to RCK then I saw Android died with the "!"
do anyone of you know how can I fix it?

Copy the latest Firmware on your SD card. Re name it to "EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip"
Go into recovery, and it should reflash and reset.
however, the issue that i stated is primarily about failed to access recovery mode instead of solely failed to flash roms
