Okay random question but I'm getting a 64GB micro SD card and all I need to do is format it and I'll be good right? Like i don't have to worry about any issues? I want a 64GB but I heard about issues people had so it may sway me to a 32GB. Thanks for any response

You don't have to flash it to FAT32 in order to use it, but if you flash a custom kernel or JB, the phone may have trouble recognizing the card. Formatting it as Fat32 removes the issue.

Plus CWM Recovery won't recognize it unless it's Fat32 also. Not sure about TWRP though...
It's always best to reformat sd in fat32. It reduces unneeded headaches.

I left all three of my 64gig cards formatted the way they come.
They work just fine that way and that allows me to store files over 4 gigs which is the limit for FAT32.

That's fine assuming you want to stay on a stock rom. If you plan on flashing AOSP/CM, then you're going to end up with a corrupted card if you leave a 64GB card as exFAT

You would have to re format it as exfat. But then you run into compatibility problems mentioned above.

Ah damn that sucks. I'm actually in AOKP right now. So I can basically throw the idea of having HD movies on my 64GB right out the window right? I assume an HD movie is more than the 4GB file limit

ALL of my BlueRay rips are over 4 gigs.
I could rip them to a smaller size if my only use for them was to play in the phone, but I use them for other uses & I can't see the point in having 64 gigs of space but blocking the ability to store large files.

Damn its a tough choice. Get a 64GB card but format it to work with both AOSP and TW but losing the ability to have HD movies over 4GB. And I know I'll burn thru a 32GB card real quick

I used to be able to do this on my SII with build.prop edits, but that phone also had an unlocked boot loader and I used a different kernel. I've read other people wanting to have this option on this phone, but I haven't seen anything that points that it has been done yet.
Noticed today after bringing up Apps2sd that its saying i dont have an external storage or i have an emulated ext storage even with a 16gb sd card in. computer reads it fine and i would like to move my large apps to it. Any ideas please?
thanks

App does not work since ICS release. Apps must run off internal. There are workarounds but more hassle than they are worth.
Not sure why someone would even need this feature in this day and age. It was only invented to deal with shortage of space before cell phones caught up with the times.

FWIW everyone I have seen with those issues the card has been formatted in exfat or whatever format phone uses by default. Apparently it corrupts something. You might try putting card in a computer and using a application to format SD card as fat32 and see if it helps?
I believe mine was fat32 from when I was using it in my incredible. Can't say for sure though. I will format this once though. It's a [email protected] when it goes all of a sudden, especially when it's hour 2 of 8.

I always format mine on the PC to fat32. I actually had a notification saying that the card was damaged. Dunno,I'll see if it happens again...
I've heard of this problem quite a bit but when I used an SD card in my GS3 I never had the problem.
I was using a Samsung microSD card.
Had the same card for a while. No problem here. Thing is my phone happens to randomly eject and remount the card every so often when I set the phone down.

Whatever it is, I can't afford to keep buying 64 gb sdcards regularly. I've had 0 issues with this phone until now, and burning up sdcards frequently is a pretty big one. I put in a spare 16 gb card after formatting it in the pc for fat32 tonight. *fingers crossed*

The same thing happened to me, and a lot of other people in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856564
I got a SanDisk card, and got one of the "breathable" cases to keep things cooler, and I haven't had a problem since. Not sure if that's a real solution, but I'm happy with it
Now that I'm thinking about it, I remember that when I got this last sdcard, I formatted it to fat32 based on what I was reading. Not only that, it's a Sandisk, which half of the above thread stated to get. Now I'm really concerned that it's a hardware issue and I'll end up with someone's piece of crap refurb
Mine borked on me again this morning. (32 gb Sandisk cl10 fat32 format)Said there wasn't a card inserted and then after I pulled the card and re-loaded it,it said the card was blank or the data was un-readable. All my pics on it were visible in the gallery and I added some more thru out the day. Sometime this afternoon for no reason it seemed to straighten itself out and is showing up in storage. Other than cleaning the contacts on the card wtf-over?
Haven't had a single issue with mine, haven't even touched it since it went in when I bought the phone in early August. It's my old 16GB out of my Bionic so its nothing special
Hey guys, I just recently saw when I turned my phone on, it says sd unexpectedly removed, when in fact it is in there. If I take it out and re insert it, it doesn't say anything? I would try to use this on my laptop but I know the reader on my laptop is busted (plus I'm at work). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure, I had a 32gb card myself and it started acting weird on me. Doing th e are thing, acting like it wasn't there, needed formating or some such. I switched to my old 16gb card from my droid X and it worked perfectly. I think not was just a bad card. It's possible as the prices came down and these cards got cheaper the quality control has dropped. . I might add that that was my second 32gb card The first one wouldn't even work in my laptop when i tried to format it and got so hot that it burned my fingers when took it out!
Short Story is you may have a duff card. Try an old sd card just to make sure it's not your phone.

Sounds like a duff card. What brand of card is it?
I'd say as a last ditch attempt when you can try using a laptop and make sure it's not formated to exFAT. When mine went bad my laptop wouldn't even let me format it

I had a generic 32GB card workinf for me perfectly from day one, but recently I bought a SanDisk 64GB and I can't get my phone to recognize it (my computer does), I'm thinking it has to be in the right format, which formats will the phone recognize and which won't it?
Try it in cwm. There is a page that does give info on partition and speed somewhere on the net.
Afterward, fix permissions.

Fat32 if you intend to be a rooted user
Fat32 is the stock format OOB and will work well with all devices.
Ext4 is androids partition for apps.

Settings >> Storage >> Format
tried that to, still won't work.

did a bit of googling, found a program that will format into fat32 format since windows 7 and 8 wont. finally works!
I was wondering does anyone know what the limit is for a card using my reader. I've got a 128gb card in it and it works fine. But I was wondering if the Note 5 could handle a 200gb card. There's some great deals on line for 200gb cards which I could use since I only have a 32gb Note 5.
My note 5 reads my 200gb card just fine

No cable necessary, just plug it in your phone and insert a micro sdcard, and you're good to go.
