HTC Sensation ? Any thoughts on the popularity of this or similar HTCs ?
I'm thinking I should get a recent HTC phone with a Broadcom FM/combo chip.

When I get a new device for testing my app, I try to make sure it's popular and/or a good representative of a "class of similar devices" that likely run similar ROMs and have similar hardware.
I'm trying to figure out if I should get a Sensation, or if there is some similar HTC device that is even more popular or more representative. I have the two OneX's but those use TI and Qualcomm FM/BT/WiFi combo chips, and I want the more common and popular Broadcom, ideally the BCM4330 or later/similar chips.
Similar audio chips/systems would be good too.
A device that will get an official ICS update would be even better, but AFAICT we don't know about that yet. HTC really annoyed me with the Desire HD broken promise.
I see half-broken units good enough for my use on EBay in the $150 area...
Thoughts ? Thanks !

Hi,
I would say the Sensation is an extremely popular phone, with good current support from a variety of Developers.
Even as people move on to other phones, others are buying up the second hand phones.
So, you would not be short of customers here.
The other very popular phone here in Germany is the Sensation XL and the Sensation is not very popular here in Germany

Thanks. I try to estimate popularity by numbers of forum posts or views.
"Plain" Sensation seems pretty good, but Evo 3D seems even higher, especially for the Sprint CDMA version.
Always seems to be this issue of variants, CDMA/GSM and XE/XL etc. which can make for a whole different phone development wise.

Germany is my best market, per capita.
But unfortunately my "post count" check on the forums isn't anywhere near comparable.
Of course it came out later (right?) but I'm sure total numbers are still much higher.
And I prefer getting older phones that are cheaper on EBay.
Android "fragmentation" affects me greatly, due to the low level hardware specific requirements. So I have 15 different devices in my "test fleet" now. And I'm trying to be very picky when it comes to additions, as it's difficult to manage so many.

in EU version of the HTC HD2 it turned that it had more internal memory than originally announced..
Therefore are there any hidden features which are not enabled in the Sensation?
So far, hardware realted, just one:
EVO 3D's battery (which has slightly higher capacity) can be used in Sensation.
If there are hidden features to be "unlocked", it will be easier to find them out after the bootloader has been unlocked by HTC next month.
We know of an internal memory of 3gb that are hidden in order to increase performance....

There is a discussion in the dev forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168521
Edit I think that is the wrong one, I'll try to find the right thread
That's STORAGE memory, not RAM. They won't make a difference in performance. HTC website lists that the Sensation has 4GB internal storage, but so far only 1GB is available for user.

Okay thank you for that. I noticed you were American and therefore thought you meant an American release date.
I suppose once HTC release software to unlock the bootloader of the international version, developers here would figure out how to do it on the US version. Afterall the hardwares are mostly the same, the time gap that HTC stated probably has to do with their dealings with the carriers.
I think htc may hide 256M RAM.

what would one use that for?
My car has no jack input for mp3 player,so stream my music via fm would be a good thing...
You could always just get a Bluetooth enabled car stereo like I did

Using the FM transmitter will beat the cost of any bluetooth enabled radio...unless you're a thief. In that case, grab me one too please.
or maybe the Sensation is really a Decepticon
Yes, the Sensation is actually running Winmo 5 with a Sense 3.0 skin.
Mine cloaked itself and now I can't find it
It's not really a hidden hardware feature, but a cool easter egg for gamers.
Under Personalize/Lock Screen, the third option is for the Friends Stream.
If you actually read the post, it's by Jill Valentine, and she's recounting the events of Resident Evil 3! Wonder if Capcom have seen this yet!
WHY IS THERE SO LITTLE DEVELOPMENT FOR SENSATION XL ,NO NEW ROM ,NO GOOD THEMES AND SO ON. WHEN I HAD MY OLD PHONE -DESIRE HD AND HD 2 , THERE WAS A GOOD ROM DEVELOPMENT, I THINK THAT SENSATION XL IS A GOD PHONE .I THINK THIS IS SAD. WHEN I LOOK FOR ORIGINAL SENSATION ROMS THERE IS TONS OF ROMS AND THEMES, EVEN ICS-ROM (ANDROID 4.01). THANKS FOR REPLYS AND SORRY FOR MY POOR ENGLISH
The poor Sensation XL was released at a bad time, along with a few other high-demand devices. This, coupled with its below-average specs for the time, pretty much sealed its fate before it even hit the shelves.
While it may be a top phone, it was outclassed and outshined by the other phones released at the same time. The only thing it had going for it was the bundled Beats audio solutions, which drove the price through the roof. it's still 550+ here in Australia.
I'm sorry mate, but there's never going to be the kind of Development you're used to seeing on that phone. Just looking at the devices you listed, you've had some of the best devices for Development on the Market
Take care.

This doesn't make sense... They're releasing the Desire C, Desire VT next month and those are SINGLE core phones with Sense 4. (I'm really pissed about this.)
Lol, didn't HTC also say this last year? And now they're releasing the Desire C. HTC seem to have no idea which direction they want to go in
I guess this is the direction they to take. And their plans for the near future. I'm sure they wouldnt just cancel the release of already announced phones I'm guessing this is for here on out.

It may be single core but it doesn't necessarily mean its worse. You gotta understand from HTC's point of view, business aspect. If you want to control the market, or atleast increase the total share, you should make phones according to the different pay grades, social status. Take the one S for example. It's a dual core but runs the sense 4. Sensation is dual core but its hardware capabilities is limited. (According to HTC)

Yeah, now they'll ship S3 powered One S's (256mb of less ram make a real difference?)... they are doing exactly what they said they wont do. And then they wonder Why are sales so bad?

Are you getting rid of your sensation? For the price range you have I'd stick with the sensation. You will have a much lower quality device than the sensation in that price range. Why not wait a bit and add another hundred or so and you can get a good quality device. After coming from sensation I doubt you will be satisfied with something of lesser quality. Look possibly for used devices and see what deals you can get. I wish you the best.

Your best bet is going to be something like a samsung galaxy vibrant. It's a large step down but it does have a couple great jelly bean roms out for it that I've been using. If you're really lucky you might be able to pick up a LG G2x for close to that price on craigs list, but you'd have to get pretty lucky. I lucked out and got my sensation for $150 so you never know.
Like realsis says though you are going to be getting an inferior phone for that price, but you can get something usable and reliable. I keep my vibrant as a back up phone just in case I fubar my sensation so I know how you feel.
People say the Samsung Exhibit II can be had around that in the used market. I've never used one myself but a friend has one and likes it. I'm sure in the single core world, there's probably something better to be had for the money though.
Yes, the G2x would be a "good" choice if you can score one for that cheap. People hate on that phone for software issues. But its sibling might be getting ICS soon (I might be wrong), so it may be in its future unofficially as well. Problem is no nVidia drivers so no hardware acceleration for the roms now.
I would go for the HD2, thats a windows phone, but there is android for it (even JB) windowns phone 6.5, 7 and 7.5 and meego, or try the galaxy s, thats a good phone to!

Anything newer than a Hero really, You want it to have its own GPU and not just a CPU. Angry birds on the hero lags horribly and even facebook takes ages to load!
Let me describe my almost 1-year long experience with mentioned devices.
HD2 was the nicest phone to work with. No S-OFF's and ****. Just flashing hspl and bootloader from RUU and you are on fully unlocked android (one-time job). Everything else is fastboot and CWM. N1 roms just need a diff and they are ported to HD2 in no time. Only problem I had were hardware buttons. they get squashed after time and eventually they can damage display's ribbon cable or just stop working (about ~1.5 y and you get problems).
Galaxy series (or vibrant in US) is typical samsung-you will get tons of RIL issues due to poor baseband implementation. Missed calls. After time it also develops pink spot on camera, and gps shouldn't be on list of features at all-it bearly works on open field. Mic disorts and noone can hear you on the other end. Only thing good about it is the screen.
I also had SE Arc which is also cheap, but it's camera cannot focus closer than arm's lenght (macros are mission impossible) and it had same cheap feeling of S, but it's screen is in 2008 netbook range (no group watching of photos on this phone is possible) and resolution of 854x480 which confuses many apps. Plus it's hard to unlock without voiding warranty and speed is comparable to HD2.
I have got the Sensation a few days ago for 180 euro but it's by far the best used phone you can get on cheap. just sayin'. I S-OFFed with Juopunutbear and I'm unlocked without loosing warranty. S3 kicks even GN's ass (omap4) in terms of speed and gpu power.
Look on eBay. Some phones are still expensive (e.g. iPhone) but others are stupidly cheap (e.g. pre)

Guys,
HTC, the company that gave us the original xda series, the T-mo G1, Nexus One, Evo and other great phones is in dire financial straits.
They're on a downward spin for the last two quarters, and while they might not be in danger yet, analysts reckon that soon, they will.
HTC devices have always had the best build quality and better than normal specs, and as a company, I hold a lot of regard for them, based on my experiences with the HTC Touch, the Nexus One and the Sensation.
I hope this thread won't get locked/deleted by a mod. I don't know if there are rules prohibiting such threads as mine, but I'm just trying to grt my opinion out there.
This promotional video by HTC reminded me of all I love about them:
http://youtu.be/fWDHYqBSjQg
HTC continues to produce some of the best devices on the market, with the Droid DNA/HTC DLX being the latest of those.
I request any xda member/developer looking to buy a new device to consider buying HTC.

No. Until they put bigger batteries and/ or removable batteries on their phones (and get rid of Sense) , I'll always look away. Its time to move on.

Sensation is my last HTC device unless HTC improve their relations with developers, they have started encrypting RUU now which mean no ports, no developments for older phones unless this can be cracked. Also HTC update policy stinks...

Yeah, I heard about the encryption.
You'd think a company that's in dire straits would do all it could to improve relations with devs...
Like it did in it's heyday in 2011...
Though Droid DNA development seems to be off to a nice start...
They've already leaked a few exploits, and all the devs stuck on Verizon are migrating from the Incredible to the DNA...
Quite a few sponsored-ish feeling reviews etc on that board...
So maybe they are working to correct their ways... only time can tell.

Totally agree with you about the batteries bit...
And the Sense bit too... Sense makes no sense, but nobody matches HTC build quality, and we can always flash an alternative like CM, AOKP or PA to be Sense-free...
