Still on stock 2.3.4? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bricked my old Nexus S so I picked up a new one. (Thank god I had a warranty!) I am running Gingerbread 2.3.4 and I've checked for updates but it says there are none available. Is there anyway I can update from 2.3.4 -> 2.3.6 -> 4.0.4 -> 4.1.1 All without rooting or unlocking bootloader?

Download the flashable update .zips from the dev section.

Do I install them from stock recovery? & do I loose any data?

Yes, but not with Superoneclick as it doesn't work with the update from LG. Assuming you have Clockwork Mod Recovery through NVflash, (great instructions http://www.techofweb.com/technology/flashing-cwm-recovery-g2x.html , simply flash a pre-rooted version of this update from xboarder54 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
1 click nvflash app to install clock work .
download rooted 2.33 rom or nandriod backup and flash
in clock work.
works fine..

trying to restore LG-P999-V10f/--i get--MD5 mismatch while trying to unroot. I already restored to a nandroid running 2.2 can I just run the LG update or must I unroot in order to update baseband? Will I be able to unroot if I update using LG (I have DW model). Help please.
Funny thing is I have been with Android since the G1. I have yet to root any of my android phones. I know, I'm a noob. I'm trying to learn how to root my G2x recently but want to make sure I find something solid so my phone will work 100% or close to that. Now that we have GB, I would assume the devs are updating their ROMs so I'm reading up to see what's the new or hot ROM for the G2x. If anyone can point me in the right direction or have some time to school this noob - I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

[Q] After 2.3.5 Gingerbread updated firmware... how to root???

I'm absolutely happy with the 2.3.5 BUT i some how lost access to my SuperUser.. Does anyone know what additional software to root 2.3.5 gingerbread for Samsung Infuse? I would deeply appreciate the help
You can't root 2.3.5
As far as I know, the only way you can root 2.3.5 at the moment is to install JordanElliott's 2.3.5 rom (UCKJ1). You'll need clockworkmod rom manager to flash the rom and then the stock kernal to fix the wifi. It was relatively painless.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297693
So wait, did we get an Official 2.3.5? I'm somewhat confused.

I haven't seen anything about an official release. The latest leak makes it seem like we are really close though since it includes a bootloader.
I'm sure when the sources are released and the real update is out everyone will know

A. look for threads with titles about the firmware toy are running, b. look for threads about issues rooting, c. How are you running 2.3.5? Did you flash it? Did it get pushed to your phone? Did you buy it like that? Did you buy it new?
If you flashed it with Odin and can't figure this out or find the answer i'm in awe, the answer is in every leak thread so far but the question keeps coming up.
Use SuperOneClick v2.2 and use zergRush as the exploit.
Heck...where dud u get 2.3.5? I want it..lol...yea SOC works good...

ANY suggestions
OK I saw the video.
1. This is not an official update.
2. This is a leaked firmware.
3. Try using super one click on a different PC.

[Q] Will rooted/flashed/ROM'd devices receive the new ICS update over the air?

Hey guys
My Nexus S is currently flashed with [CM7.1.0.1-N229] -=Nexus MV 10.19B=- |Fast&Stable|Ezekeel's Mod|Matr1x 9.0|
With the announcement by Google advising that all Nexus S devices will receive the ICS update, is there anything I need to do to my phone to receive this firmware update?
Do I need to restore back to default ROM etc, or can I leave as is?
Thanks for your help
Quentin
You won't receive the OTA, you need to be running stock for that.
Changes are that once the source is released someone will create an AOSP ROM faster than the OTA will reach you, so you could just flash that?
Greetz
don't worry
CM7 and other group will have ICS based-on ROM
so , only thing you may worry is how long you gonna wait
beside , you always can flash ICS stock ROM if you don't wanna wait anymore , don't you think ?
anyone have any idea on when the ICS update will come to NS4G?

Rooting is required to Install ICS..?
Hi.
Can I install ICS without rooting my phone...? My phone is unlocked...
Thanks
You will NOT receive an OTA update unless you're running Android on a stock unrooted device. The only way you will run Ice Cream Sandwich is if you find an ICS ROM but most of them are in alpha stages, meaning not suitable for daily use.

Unlikely. Most OTAs do not do an assert on recovery and flash without any issue with CWM. If you've modified anything it does assert though it will fail.

It won't install though so you still won't be able to OTA ICS.

Why wouldn't it? Every other OTA has had no problem installing through CWM on a rooted stock system. Unless this OTA decides to assert recovery for some reason (the only reason it would fail as it would then be trying to patch recovery).

Seems much more simple to root when your at 2.3.5 (with stock recovery) then OTA update and you will keep root. I think it MIGHT work even if you have CWM but have not tested.
INope doesnt work if u have cwm i tested and so did a few others. But yes thats correct thats easier but i posted this for those who took the update and were not rooted

People are reporting that they didn't loose root when updating. However, not sure if they had stock recovery or not installed at the time. I didn't risk it and flashed back to stock then confirmed SuperOneClick did not work. Used the method described above and rooted.
Yes they had stock recovery. You cant take the ota unless you have stock recovery. And correct if you are rooted with stock recovery u will not loose root
Coming from Captivate and have had flashed HTC phones in the past, I kind of feel like anything Odin IS the easy method. It's like we had a OneClickMethod and a TwoClickMethod.
Correct odin is very easy if you read and follow all directions.

WHY are we going to the OTA update if many are reporting poor 4g performance after the update. I don't want my 4g to run slower just so I can say I have 2.3.6

Stock means it's the ROM the phone ships with or can be normally updated to... which is either 2.3.3, or 2.3.4.

There's a nandroid of stock 2.3.3 and you can root with super one click, or flash one of the stock ROMs... and it'll usually say " stock" in the title. 2.3.4 if on the new baseband.
Also, you can do some searching... won't hurt.
The method i beleve you have to go by depends on what version you opened the box with.
I started with 2.3
Please only use this as a reference and a reasurence, do a little more searching to find a better guide.
First you restore the backup from the development section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048274
Then you need to restore stock recovery with NVFlash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Once at this point you can unroot with super one click
now go here http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-P999
and click software updates and drivers then follow the instructions to get back to 100% factory.
THIS IS BY NO MEANS A HOW TO
this is just what i have done in the past.
I know this says update to new baseband but following the directions will take you back to stock, lose root and all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674901
Similar method to what urfate posted.
