Root w/ out USB data connection? - Samsung Infuse 4G

Mom deleted her pictures folder so I went to connect her phone to comp to try and run some data recovery program. Won't recognize. Nothing.
Tried all USB ports on 3 different computers with 3 different cables. Tried manually installing drivers, removing old with USB deview and also trying the kies route. Tried all USB modes (Kies, Media, USB data). Tried various modes with and without USB debugging. Ok probably went too far. Bad USB connection. It can charge though.
My question is how can I root without USB data connection? It's my understanding that to be able to run any sort of Data Recovery app on android I would need to be rooted. I'm an iPhone user so not too familiar with the whole android scene. Any help would be appreciated.
She's on 2.2.1 Froyo
Can I use z4root? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
Or can I use wireless adb to install the zergrush root? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371326
Thanks in advance

I don't believe that you'll be able to recover those deleted files. However, if you want to root 2.2.1 (Froyo) but don't have USB access, try this. It says that it's for Gingerbread, but I just tested and it worked to root Froyo.
Gingerbreak v. 1.20 apk - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
After that, update the Superuser app in the Play Store and update su to the latest version from within the app.
NOTE: Earlier, I posted a method that I thought would work using zergRush in Android Terminal Emulator. I've taken that back, because I tested and it didn't work like it does when I do it in adb. zergRush needs adb to work.

Holy smokes. After using Odin to go back to stock Froyo to test for this thread, that was the fastest path to get back to ICS that I've had in a while. From Froyo, I installed the Gingerbreak apk to root, used SGS kernel flasher to flash the kernel image from CM9. Booted into blue recovery, did all my wipes, and flashed CM9. Kind of refreshing not to mess with Gingerbread along the way.

[Q] Odin doesn't detect download mode

I've been trying to figure this out for hours...
I recently got a Charge (I also have an old Fascinate). and I'm trying to root it. It came out of the box with EE4. I primarily use a macbook pro, but have learned that I can't root EE4 with it. So, I booted up my old school desktop PC.
I can't get Odin 1.82 (or 1.3 for that matter) to recognize my Charge or my Fascinate. I've tried 4 different Samsung driver files, and the computer recognizes the phones in USB Storage mode just fine (telling me that the usb cable is working fine). I can transfer files and everything. And yes, the phones have the yellow road sign looking thing and say "Downloading..."
But when I put either in download mode:
USB device not Recognized.
One of the USB devices attached to this conputer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance click this message.
Basically, acts as though no driver is installed. and when I click the message and go to Update the driver (while still in download mode), I went to C:\Program Files\Samsung\USB Drivers\, but there's tons of folders and non of them contain a working driver for download mode (I tried them all).
I don't care about the Fascinate. I only mentioned it because I thought there was something to neither phone working. And this is the first (and only) time I've tried to get Odin to work (ie. it hasn't worked ever).
I've searched all over the forums, internet, and soul trying to figure this out. I can't be the only one this has happened to. Or I'm missing something really fking obvious.
I'm on an old custom made desktop with an AMD 1700+ processor running Windows XP (not 64 bit).

the pc itself doesn't sound like the problem, at least not directly... the only things I can suggest would be to either try different USB ports, a different cable, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/34782489/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_I510_v1.3.1900.0.exe (which is made specifically for the Charge), disabling any antivirus that may be installed (or running Odin as administrator), and making sure USB debugging is ticked off under 'development' in applications settings
thanks for the quick response, but unfortunately, i've tried all of those except for disabling debugging. and, sadly, that didn't do the trick.
i've tried all of the usb cables i own (about 7). i've uninstalled and reinstalled divers from every link posted, and rebooted after each time. i've tried all of my usb ports on my computer. i've even cleared out the usb history in regedit.
::sigh::

well if it was just the Charge I would say there may be a problem with the phone or somethings not being done right, I have heard of some people having phones (Fascinate mostly) that won't go into download mode for Odin but will work perfectly with everything else... however both phones not working seems to be some kind of issue with the pc or cable, but I couldn't say for sure as I'm not knowledgable on the hardware of android phones

If anyone is an ADB guru here they may know how to do it with that, like pushing CWM to the phone and then you can probably flash to stock... I only know how to do basic things like install apk's and logcat
I know with most phones, you can't go back without root because the system doesn't let you. I'm used to the Droid incredible and incredible 2, where rooting and flashing roms is easy as pie with some knowledge of adb and cwm. none of the ed01, ee4, fu69 stuff to worry about. Odin seems very easy, and its damn near impossible to permanently brick your phone if you have it. BUT I can't get it to work.
is there an adb / non-Odin root method for ee4?
if I understand correctly, the gingerbreak method and one click method don't work with ee4. (I've tried both of those too)

Your on Mac? Have u tried using heimdall?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
I've tried using heimdall on my Mac and can't get it figured out. heimdall 1.3 (older heimdalls like 1.1.1 wont open) requires a framework.XML file which Odin roms don't have. I can create one but the only way I can do that is by using a .pit file (which creates a partition) which I'd have to take from other rom files. the only way can see it working is by Frankensteining it together to get it to flash which does doesn't seem right.
I could be completely misunderstanding how to get it to work. I could just use heimdall in terminal, but I don't understand it enough yet to attempt. heimdall 1.3 looks nothing like the way I thought it would (where I select all the recovery, bootloader, etc files individually)

yes only for stock 2.2 because it is what reformats your partitions after they've been converted to ext4 with lagfix/voodoo
as for stock roms EE4 is the latest and hasn't given me any problems when Odining but I suppose the others like ED1 or ED2 would be fine

soft brick, you need to odin EE4 stock with the PIT file and it'll be back to normal.. its almost impossible to permabrick this phone through user error, only if the boot.bin files are corrupted afaik

Root Problem SuperOneClick

Hello,
I've got a Skyrocket i727 and am stuck on the psneuter part when trying to root. I'm sorry for posting here since I'm sure the answers lie somewhere, but I've been researching since yesterday and haven't found it. I'm on a satellite internet connection that is pretttty slow.
Anyways, so I have the drivers installed, and then run SuperOneClick as Admin on windows 7. I click root and it runs until psneuter then appears to be stuck. It freezes there. When I close the black command screen that has opened it suggests I turn off debugging mode. When I try to close debugging mode it just stays at Waiting for Device...
So, what am I missing?
Thanks so much in advance.
SuperOneClick didn't work on mine because it had updated to 2.3.6 from 2.3.5...Which one do you have?

odin not recognizing phone

hey guys, need some help from the guru's here. trying some of the newer latest roms and kinda got stuck here. for some reason im not able to use odin(1.7 or 1.81) to go back to stock. i am able to use the heimdall one click versions (stock froyo, uclb3, and entropy DD kernel) but thats it. im on gb bootloaders and heimdall did ask to download some new drivers, wondering if that was why?
been having problems with this touch screen on several roms and was going to call about warranty. if they want it back, it needs to be stock stock.
thanks in advance for any help

How are you entering download mode, manually or through extended power menu/toggles? Powermenu/toggles never worked for me I always had to go manually for it to be detected
Have you tried different USB ports? For me only one USB port works with Odin...even though the rest work out of download mode for transferring files
You probably do, but do you have drivers installed?

doesnt matter if i enter download mode manually with the button/data cable method or through extended power menu.
im using the same usb port i've always used that has always worked for me. i'll try a different one.
also, i do have drivers installed because i have used odin in the past.
i honestly think it has something to do with the drivers that were installed when i used heimdall one click, they were a different set of drivers. i just dont know how to reinstall odin drivers or put it back the way it was beforehand.
i do have a replacement device on the way and i would like to have uckh1 installed before i ship it back to them.
Reload drivers. Heimdall drivers aren't used with Odin. Adam O just posted some comments on this in another thread recently.

If your rom version support the zerg rush rooting method you can do it, install cwm and flash a rom from there.
I never had to flash anything using odin, tried using odin only once and even then I dont think it recognized my phone due to bad kies drivers(which I have fixed by now).
you do have the correct drivers installed right? More info in your first post would be an advantage to those trying to help

BUMP
Hi, I want some help with this same issue. I'm not sure what forum etiquette is here, whether you guys prefer a bump of an old thread or that I just start a new one??
Anyway my phone is wigging out so I wanted to wipe and flash but I can't figure out how to do this since no PC/cord combo will recognize my phone, though it still charges. I wanted to use ROM Manager to flash OTA, but I can't since I can't figure out how to get cwm installed ota. I've been digging around the forum and googling for a couple days now to no avail.
Version - 2.3.5
Baseband - I727UCKJ2
Kernel - 2.6.35.11
It was rooted but I never flashed any roms. It randomly shuts itself off and upon a battery pull will get stuck in Odin dl mode? If i do a batt pull after that it will go straight back to Odin dl mode or it get's stuck in a vibration loop. Sometimes if I plug it in it will start up with a dead battery though?
Any ideas?
Should I just make a new thread on this??
clean the usb port on the phone, then the usb shall connect, i had the same prob its fixed now
Install Odin and see if it "sees" the phone in d/l mode.

Skyrocket will NOT connect to PC, have tried everything

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket (SGH-I727 / AT&T) that I cannot get to connect to a PC after weeks of trying. I have tried to read through hundreds of threads regarding this issue and it seems others have had similar issues but nothing quite like this.
When I connect my phone to a PC, it does charge but Windows XP or Windows 7 will not recognize the phone. Anytime it is connected an error pops up stating "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."
So to clarify, I have tried the following suggestions from others to troubleshoot and try to narrow down the issue:
1.) I have tried 4 separate USB cables, including the original OEM Samsung brand data cable that came with the phone.
2.) I have tried 3 separate PC's (2 with Windows 7, 1 with Windows XP).
3.) I have installed Samsung Kies on all 3 PCs, uninstalled and reinstalled the program as well as the Samsung Drivers on multiple occasions.
4.) I have done a factory/data reset on the phone twice to see if this was an issue caused by other apps I've downloaded in the past.
5.) I have tried to use USB Debugging/Developer option and then connect the phone to no avail.
6.) I have tried USB Mass Storage option before connecting the phone.
7.) I have tried to connect the phone to a PC in Samsung's default recovery mode and still showed it was not a recognizable device.
8.) I have tried a friend's galaxy S3 on all cables and PC's mentioned above and Kies immediately recognizes her phone.
9.) I have attempted to clean the physical microusb port with a small brush to make sure the contacts were clean and not being blocked by something.
10.)I have done a battery pull and about 20+ phone resets for all above mentioned attempts.
Based on all of these attempts without any success, it seems to me that this being a PHONE hardware issue is highly probable. I've ruled out just about every other scenario and I'm wondering at this point if my phone's Micro USB port is fried somehow.
Has anyone heard of this or is this a reasonable possibility?
I have tried just about everything I can so far, if anyone has any other suggestions or has any information that may confirm my suspicion, please let me know.
This all came about in the past week due to Jelly Bean being finally released by AT&T / Samsung for the Skyrocket and unfortunately, this update only seems to be available via Kies and a direct data cable to a PC. I have tried to go to Settings > About Phone > Software Update > Check for Updates (while connected to Wifi with a full battery) and the phone has told me 3 times over the past 3 days that my current Ice Cream Sandwich v4.0.4 Android is the most current software up to date. I'm guessing they're not planning on releasing Jelly Bean to the Skyrocket via OTA air updates....so now I'm stuck.

You should also try a different computer if you can. It works on my laptop but not my pc. I have no idea why and have tried everything I can think of. Also, use the usb ports on the back of the computer, not the front
Edit: sorry I didn't read your whole post.

Well after getting into the details on the post, it looks like this is created for a phone that already has a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP installed. Since I do not have a USB port to use on this phone as of right now, is there any way to install a custom recovery on my phone without using USB?
I did download the stock 4.1.2 Jelly Bean firmware directly on the phone's default directory already and it's sitting there in a zip format. If I'm not able to root and/or install a custom recovery without using a USB cable, would it be possible to install the stock firmware using the default samsung recovery mode?

if there is ive never seen it, let us know how, that is how to install a rom/firmware w/out custom recovery and w/a dead usb port
Crap if he's bone stock then no if it were stock rooted he could use dd commands with terminal emulator.
Also nowhere in his description did he ever say he deleted the old drivers from device manager.
Also I'm wondering how you are installing these drivers.

Well I did find this older thread that will supposedly allow me to install CWM and root without using a USB cable or PC. I'm going to try this since you all have confirmed that I'm not able to install a stock firmware/rom using stock recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Edit - Didn't work, apparently this was for 4.0.3, not 4.0.4.
I'm going to need to figure out how to root and get CWM on my phone just to install Stock Jelly Bean all without using a USB cable. Still no luck so far.

that's not for our phones, that would of bricked ur device if it had flashed successfully
get ur usb port fixed or try some tips in fixing it in the 1stop sticky

It wouldn't work. Nothing will install in Android System Recovery <3e>. Everything I tried still came back with Signature Verification Failed.
I also tried lifting the "tongue" inside the usb port on the phone several times previously and that didn't work either. I must assume at this point the usb daughterboard or something inside is messed up.
Since stock recovery can't install any type of files and I can't connect the phone to a PC in any way and my phone is 100% stock without root or any custom recovery, I can only imagine I'm stuck in this situation. I have yet to see any solutions for getting root or installing CWM without having a USB connection that works. Unless I can do either of those things, it looks like I'm SOL for updating from ICS to JB.
If they had only made Jelly Bean an Over the Air update, none of this would be a problem really.

Too dangerous the ota bricks tons of people when they do it I can only assume at&t is tired of it and opts for kies only. Also you could buy a daughter board and replace it. It's a relatively easy fix.

So .... lesson learned here is that you CANNOT root a phone or install any custom recoveries such as CWM or TWRP without having a working USB connection. As a result, you CANNOT install any updates, stock firmwares and especially custom roms without the above.
Only option at this point is to order the replacement part for the USB port on the phone or to purchase a new phone (if it's outside of the warranty period).

No you need USB to root that's it technically. If you have root you can install a recovery IMG without a computer using a terminal emulator and dd commands.

yes and no, its the chicken and the egg kind of question, for the sr to get root u need to flash the su files, but u need to have a custom recovery to flash the su files. is there a way to get the su files onto the sr w/out a custom recovery? I haven't seen one yet unless there was a oneclick method which I never used

There is no one click available for 4.x forward.
I am wondering, however, if something like this would work:
