Well, there is an option in cm7 to wake the fone with volume keys, but I find that it only works when the fone is not in sleep state (wake_lock).
Installed wake lock app in the market and it's solved the wake lock problem.
Now I can wake the fone by volume key all the time.
Hope this helps to save the power button

Do you notice some battery drainage because of the forced wakelock?

Hi guys, I have a htc desire hd and am always cautious when I have turned my phone off and like to check if it is actually off. But the only way you can do this is by pressing the lock button, however this will turn the phone on anyway. So my question is if there is an application that allows you to wake up the phone (by that I mean when it is locked, bringing up the unlock screen) by using the volume rocker?
P.s I realise this should probably be in the desire hd section sorry

If you download lock bot from the market, it wakes your phone by pressing the volume key.

thanks for that but i dont really want to change the entire lock screen process, i would just like to have the default lock screen, but instead of just being able to show it with the power key, i would like to be able to activate it withthe rocker volume aswell
Any one got anything else to recommend?

whats ur benefit from that job???
don't know answer to your problem but i can see benefits (if pwr button is damaged or in some notwelldesigned protective case can't be pushed well). it would be nice if we could remap that button
Not possible. Never will be.
I saw this a while ago. It is possible to turn off but not on.
You can edit this file: system/usr/keylayout/chacha-keypad.kl and change the line of button 184 SHARE to 184 POWER WAKE_DROPPED
There are 13 spaces between power and wake. It will turn the screen off but when chacha enters deep sleep it will not turn it on. You can download widget locker. With it you can turn the screen on with the 'a' button even though your phone is in a deep sleep. It works for me like a charm. I never use the physical power button anymore.
I am facing a problem as my power button is suddenly not working and I am sure the phone did not undergo any physical disturbance to have this problem. Also my capactive lights don't work and then blink when I boot the phone.
I am running ViperS 3.1.0. Any suggestions to fix the issue? Please guide me through if anything can be done.

Hey,
The power button does take a fairly longer press to bring up the power menu...I am experiencing that too..
But other than that the power button is working fine...to lock the screen...and to bring up the bootloader when switched off

No it is not the problem. It was fine this morning but suddenly the problem is appearing, I don't know why this is happening.
Also the Capacitive button lights don't work this was not the case before on ViperS

can you boot now to the OS?
if not then boot to the bootloader and reboot from there
after that go to settings and untick fastboot
turn off the device and turn it on again
see how it goes

I can boot to the OS, also after I boot and do as u say. I am unable to bring the power menu as the power button is not responsive.

Nothing I did to disturb the power button. Also when I pull the battery and put it in again the phone just starts by itself without having to press the power button.

When you're in Android, does pressing the power button not turn the screen off/on? Does the power button respond at all in any situation?
Since putting the battery in is causing the phone to power on without pressing the power button, I wonder if the power button is stuck on. When you put battery in and power up, what happens if you hold volume down button? Does it go to bootloader?
Is there any way to remap hitting both volume buttons at the same time to wake your phone? The top power button is hard to hit sometimes.

I do use those to wake the phone but it would be nice for turning off the phone as well. Right now I'm using the xposed module to double tap the status bar, but even that is difficult sometimes
