[Q] tweaks build.prop on AOKP? - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Aloha!
*flexing my noob guns*
so I'm rooted and all on the tf300 and running the AOKP custom rom.
Curious if this build.prop tweak would work on this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641219
Should I try it? Will it work? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that the custom build.prop that you are referring to was meant for stock ROM, which could possibly soft brick your TF. Since AOKP is a custom ROM, I assume that the build.prop is already tweaked. But if you want to try it...since you are unlocked, you should be able to recover from a soft brick if it happens by a couple of methods...use ADB to push a good backup of the original build.prop or booting into recovery and either performing a nandroid restore or just wipe/reflash AOKP. This is all providing that you do backups up the above things first. Anytime you do mods, always ensure that you have ways of getting back just in case.

[Q] Any way to preserve all stock firmware DG17?

Hello,
This may be a silly question but I can't find a solution to it. My Epic is working perfectly. I get excellent battery life (about 20 hours on 3G, no Wifi, light use). However, my phone has always been stuck on the original release S700.0.5S.DG17 never prompting me for any update.
Since I am happy with the phone currently, I wanted to make a backup of the current firmware/baseband etc. before tinkering with any of the modded ROMs.
It is my understanding that flashing the Clockwork recovery will require a custom kernal, so I will be unable to nandroid the stock.
I cannot find any Odin files for the original DG17 release either, only DG27. Is there any way to backup my phone prior to clockwork kernal and recovery?
Thanks

Use noobnl's CWM- it uses the 3 button push and does not need a custom kernel. HOWEVER my understanding of a nandroid restore is that is doesn't overwrite the current kernel- thus if you tried to restore a nandroid backup of DG17 after you had upgraded to DG27 you might get some strange behavior- someone please correct me if I am wrong!

[Q] Kernel questions

Hi,
I had a few questions about kernels...hope someone can help me in answering these...
I am thinking of trying out the Netarchy kernel on my Nexus S, but i was just wondering is there anywhere I can download the stock kernel (so that if anything does go wrong i dont have to do a full nandroid restore?)
Also, when installing a new kernel does that wipe data (of course I will make a backup etc before installing it, but should all my settings and apps etc remain intact normally?)
what impact does an OTA update have if i am running a non stock kernel? so say i am using Netarchy's kernel, and google releases a new OTA update...will i still be able to install the update? If i do, will it revert to stock kernel?
Thanks in advance,

I'm not aware of anywhere that the stock kernel is available for download so doing a NANDroid backup is really your best option. If you have anything that deviates from stock (kernel, rom, theme, even just deleted stock apps) it will prevent you from being able to successfully update from an OTA.
You can find a lot of information about all the available kernels here just scroll down to the third post and you'll find the info.
Finally, just as a note of personal opinion, getting OTA updates is a little overrated. If you run a custom ROM, the OTAs will be included in those ROMs eventually so you won't have to worry about restoring a stock ROM just to get the updates.

Thanks for the quick answer. I had read that post before (it was actually how i came to discover kernels ). The reason why I was asking about the OTA is because I actually use the stock ROM but was just thinking about trying out the Netarchy kernel just to see what its all about. Hence if there is an OTA update, and i am running a different kernel to the stock, is the only way for me to incorporate the update by flashing the new stock rom and then reinstall the netarchy kernel?
Also, if i install it, do you know if it wipes data/apps?
Thanks

I apologize as I forgot to mention that part of your question, I'm sick with the flu and a little out of it on some cold medications lol. You only lose data and apps when flashing if you wipe the /data partition in mounts and storage and this is not required nor is it recommended when flashing a kernel. Sorry for answering out of order, but I thought I should clear that up first. As to the other question, you have it correct; you would need to flash the new update ROM and then flashing a new kernel.
I should also note that whenever you install a new ROM, you will need to reflash a custom kernel. This is because the vast majority of ROMs released include a kernel and when you flash them it will overwrite whatever kernel you currently have.
Finally, if you have any other questions you can always feel free to post them on that thread. I'm the one who wrote it and I check it often to try and answer questions as best and as quickly as I can. Happy flashing!
Are you using a custom ROM? Flashing CM7 has the stock kernel. There are probably other ones out there that includes stock kernel with them such as OTA.

New here, E4GT Need some help

Hey guys, ok so I am coming from two HTC Heros (CMDA Sprint)
Was running cyanogenmod on both (me and the wife) loved it.
Now that I have the E4GT, I went ahead last week and used ODIN to install LoStKernel.
Now it did give me root and I have used apps like rom toolbox and setcpu.
My main problem is it seems these samsung devices are a lot trickier to tinker with.
Basically I am looking to get Clockworkmod so I can flash roms and make nandroid backups.
From what I have read, I need a kernel that supports and/or has CWM in it.
I tried flashing CWM with rom manager, and it installed - but I have no option to backup/restore I can only flash a zip or clear cache.
There are SO MANY things posted in the development section and I do not know which kernels are the latest, best etc.
I need:
a) CWM/busybox
b) overclocking support
c) FULL stock functionality (no loss of wifi or something stupid like that)
From what I am understanding the kernel is included with a rom. But I can't flash a rom without CWM. So I am rooted but stuck with stock rom and it's kernel.
Confused, lol!
Can someone point me to a proper thread to get me CWM and a well supported ROM to install? Can I get CWM working fully on the stock kernel/rom?
If someone can point me to the right direction, maybe I can find a developer to donate to lol!
No love?
At this point I'm just trying to get cwm. Seems I may have already had it just didn't know it came with lostkernel and now I botched it using rom manager.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
You can actually flash a new kernel with CWM in odin
Thats the easiest method
There are several, as for the best I dont know yet
Im still tinkering with my setup
I guess that's my main issue - I can't find one that has CWM, everything I am seeing is a ROM that needs CWM to install.
If I had CWM I'd be all set because then I can backup my setup and try new things without worry, but I don't want to use ODIN to try a kernel that CWM won't take, or isn't there, and then lose what I have ya know?
All set, seems I flashed a kernel that wasn't what it was supposed to be. I apparently flashed his earlier version (pre-LoStKernel) that did not have CWM5 it it.
Just used ODIN last night to drop in LoStKernel and kept root, but also have CWM5 now. After clearing my SD Card, made my first backup. 1.5GB, jesus! lol. Nearly my whole SD card... yes, it's from my old Hero, so, time to get a 32GB.

Stock p5113 ROM, anybody?

I am getting my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Wi-fi today. I would really like to install a custom ROM, but I am hesitant without the stock ROM to ODIN. I have bricked my Fascinate several times, and I would have been stuck without the stock ROM. However, it's more complicated because the ROM's I use for the Fascinate use an MTD filesystem. Is there a situation where I would be bricked without a way to restore to stock on the gtab, or does that sort of thing not happen? Anyway, is there a stock ROM available and will you link me?
not yet
from what i've read, there isn't a p5113 stock rom yet but time will give us one i am sure. in the meantime, the best we can do is make a backup in CWM before rooting and that would give you an unaltered stock ROM backup to restore from.

[Q] JB back to ICS

Is it possible to revert back to stock ICS from a JellyBean rom like CM10 or Paranoid Android on the Verizon Galaxy SIII? I know there are some bug issues with the JB roms at this time & I want to make sure I can transition back safely before I make the jump, just in case I run into any unacceptable issues. If so, how is it done? I apologize if this has been covered already, but my google search on this has turned up empty. Thanks in advance

Its the same process as flashing the jellybean rom, just flash a stock ICS rom like cleanrom and you'll be back to normal If your talking about going back to completely 100% barebone unrooted stock then just use odin
Just make a nandroid and restore it if you need to. I had to switch back between LiquidSmooth (JB) and Synergy (ICS) a couple time to work out some issues with Swiftkey. Nandroid was able to restore without a problem for both ROMs
I read that you should try and restore a stock rooted, or ICS TW rom before after clearing your data. Then flash the ICS rom you want to use.
The same post said that there could still be some AOSP system files leftover that get mixed in that could cause some things to work improperly or not at all.
