Hi,
I have an AT&T One X and it's having this problem of seeming to shut itself off or having the screen not turn on by using the button, but the notification light flashes. When it happens, I can only get it back by a hard reset. Sometimes, when it's happens, the screen freezes while using it and it'll restart. No error shows after restart. I am on 1.85 and I have never rooted it. It's stock and I don't use a case. The phone is not warm or anything when it happens and it sometimes goes 24 hours before it occurs, sometimes not.
I have done a complete factory restore and it still is happening.
I can't use a phone that will just stop working at random.
Does anyone have any ideas? I have contacted HTC and so far the things they've suggested, I've already done (soft reset, hard reset etc)
Thanks!
Try using the stock ruu.. See if that fixes it and if your within your 30 days exchange it

Thanks. What is a stock ruu? Sorry, I'm new to android. I bought it on eBay (it was new, unopened), so I can't return. I had the software update shortly after getting the phone, from 1.73 to 1.85. I'll have to work through HTC service if it's defective.

i suggest u root it.. and try to reinstall the complete software again... use it for a day and check for any issues.. if it still does.. claim warranty
follow this guide closely, covers everything.. wiht download links ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678308
post any doubts or issues in q&a thread in this forum... and dont use any software or downloads from other htc one x (international) forum.. thy have different chipset.
edit : wait is ur power button gone bad? or u r screen goes off randomly and u cant use power button to get it back on?.. as long as it doesnt reboot randomly .. i think u should try above guide
and power button needs a short press.. are u pressing it far too long? its suppose to restart if u keep power button pressed for 10 sec
Thanks. Ok, I might try that rooting, but I wish the software was easily reinstalled if there are update issues.
Power button is Ok. It randomly won't turn the display on, it seems something has crashed software wise. Sometimes, it will freeze, as in turning it back on with the button, and then it freezes when pulling the unlock ring, or scrolling to a widget. Then it restarts, and it is Ok for a bit after restarting.
But on more than a few occasions, I've pulled the phone out to check something or show someone something, and the button won't turn the screen on, or it's shut itself off. Then I do a hard reset and it come to life and seems to work fine for a while.
I'm guessing now this is not a common problem.

So far you are the only person with this problem so we are running through the basics.
Did you get any errors or messages during the update? Did the phone run out of battery mid update? Did anything odd or unusual happen?
quick question in while in the topic, had he done a FULL nandroid backup and was able to atleast get to boot screen would he be able to restore his phone? just a quick questions because to this day i have no idea how the nandroid thing works i cant do it on my x64 vista either and dont see how it comes in handy lol. Sorry just trying to fig it out.
after i tried to install the radio update it showed some sort of chip with an arrow and then it froze for over 10 mins so i ended up taking out the battery
@zgjbeta Yes. If you can get to the blinkin android screen, your not really bricked. Nandroid would fix it right up.
If it wont even turn on, like your case. I dono what to tell you.
For starters, try to connect it to a wall outlet to make sure its not the battery.
Also tell us exactly what happened during the update process.
EDIT: I read your most recent post. That's strange because everyone gets the chip thing, you shouldve tried home + back or menu + green + red.
One of those wouldve most likely worked.
Good luck.
Also maybe try to take it out again and put it back in.
I had the chip and arrow after the radio update, I didn't take the battery out, started pressing random keys, lol... and then it went away and booted back to a JF recovery style screen. Pressed home + back and it rebooted to a stuck flashing android. Then did call+menu+end to reboot and it has worked fine ever since.
There is definitely something whacky going on...
yes i tried to do the home key plus end and camera plus end options while in that chip state but didnt do anything so i resolve to take out the battery and it wont turn on again. i also tried all the button reset combo nothing happens
If it wont even turn then there is really nothing that can be done. Another thing I would try is if you know someone else with a G1 try their battery.

Also try cleaning the battery contacts in the phone and on the battery. This happened to one of my dumbphones once - cleaned out the battery contacts and it worked again. Bizzare situation, simple solutions first.
You might've turned it off while it was writing a vital file. Thus your phone might be bricked.
Here's an idea - sent it back to T-Mobile/HTC - and I don't think they will notice you violated your warranty until it's too late (they have to fix your phone to find out) so you could just refuse to pay and have them send it back to you.
I too saw the chip with the arrow thing, so that makes 3 people in this thread. It happened when I did the radio update. Anyway, in my case, I held down the recovery mode keys for a while and it went to the menu. Then I just rebooted and everything was great. Glad I didn't take out the battery (I considered it).
I had the chip and just waited and it took care of itself. Just be patient people.
plug in the wall charger, wait 10 seconds, then hold the red power button for 3-5 seconds then release, it should turn on
i tried that didnt work anymore advice?
also is there any way to run diagnostics of this phone to pc to make it work?
If the phone won't turn on, go back to the T-Mobile store and ***** em out. Not much else to say if we can't even get power to it.
Hi!
Today I got from my friend a bricked Desire S.
He said, he tried updating a pile of apps at once and it froze. He left it to cope with that and when he was back it was turned off.
When turned on it would stuck on htc logo. He read somewhere that he has to perform a "factory reset". I'm not sure what exactly has he done later (he did this with holding the volume up and power buttons and than there had to be, as he said, an option to reset the device), but the result is, that the device doesn't respond at all.
Nothing happens when connected to USB or charger.
Is there anything I can do about it?
Maybe force push bootloader with adb?
Please, help guys
Hi,
it doesn't do anything at all?
Power button?
Power button + Volume down?
Recharge battery?
Connect to a PC with properly installed htc drivers?
Remove battery and put it back?
Unfortunately yes.
Tried different combinations several times - once or twice the led blinked for like a half a second, but than nothing.
I have some flashing experience and I learn quickly. If You have ANY ideas, I'll try to make them happen.
I will try everything, as I have nothing to loose
Regards.

Whenever we see “And I was updating apps and it froze up.....” we have a suspicion we perhaps have another case of the eMMC chip packing in. At least he didn’t do a battery pull. Holding UP + DOWN + POWER has a similar effect to hitting reset on a PC. You can’t get to recovery this way.
With the phone off, hold just the DOWN + POWER. Does the phone then boot into HBOOT? (white screen with coloured text and little green androids at the bottom). If it does, great. You can choose RECOVERY from this and do a factory reset. If the phone does a series of (seven?) quick vibrations maybe not so good.
Search for “eMMC” in this forum to get plenty of people who had this problem, and how (some of them) have been able to fix it. Knowing what to search for is half the battle!
For example check this thread out...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284196
Geek out!
Thanks for the reply,
I actually have tried entering the hboot few times - with no success.
It doesn't respond at all.
I've read about this chip, but I want to make sure there is no option to force the phone to enter recovery. Than I would probably know what to do next.
Regards.

Not sounding good I'm afraid. The last resort would be to contact HTC and try to get it repaired on warranty. They are very very aware of the problem, and once you tell them "I was updating all apps at once and it froze" they'll accept it as a known hardware failure. Like you say, you have nothing to loose in trying.
A friend recently had this, and sent if off to HTC for repair. As the description of the fault was a known hardware failure, they never bothered to test it first, so they didn't notice it had been rooted! It just went straight through to get a main board replacement. It took five weeks for them to return it though. Best fish out that battered Nokia in your drawer and charge it up ready!
Good luck!
Uh, these are quite bad news, but I'm pretty sure they will accept it on warranty, since my friend haven't done anything "illegal" with it
Thank You for Your fast replies
Regards.
Hi all,
Right, my phone isn't rooted as I just sent it off to HTC to have a look at - to no avail - they may just have reloaded the ROM which was wonderful
Anyway, for a while now I've been having issues whereby, normally whilst the phone is on low battery (~15%), pressing the power button to wake the phone will result in the screen staying black, before after 2 seconds, rebooting to the HTC logo.
I expected this to be a hardware error, so simply loaded my apps and settings back on as soon as it was returned. Is there any possibility that it may be something other than a hardware error that could cause this reboot, such as the SIM card or a particular app?
It's absolutely doing my nut in
Cheers,
James

Tried with two batteries, tries wiping the battery stats. Also occasionally happens with high charge so it doesn't seem a battery issue.
Cheers though.
I'm having a similar issue from time to time. I've been lucky enough to not have this issue for the last 4 weeks or so but 3-4 days ago it came back. But I think I solved it, at least temporarily.
Next time it crashes, remove the battery and while the back cover is off, press and hold the power button for ~10 seconds to drain what little power is left. Then put the battery and cover back on but don't turn the phone on. Instead, charge it until the led turns green. I'm not sure if this really is a fix but since I did this it hasn't crashed. I remember doing something similar back in January and it seemed to fix the issue then too. But it seems to come back over a period of weeks/months.
PS. Now that I think of it, maybe you don't have to wait for it to crash. Just turn it off and go through the steps and see if it helps.

Hi, i know this is an old thread, but I have the exact same problem on my Desire S. So i'm wondering if you ever solved this problem?
When you press the wake button, the phone doesnt restart, it just boots up. It is quite a known issue. There seem to be a design flaw that makes the battery just a little bit loose. So little that its not really noticealble, but enough to.cause the phone to turn off randomly. The solution is to place a.little piece of paper on the opposite site.from the battery connector pins. It makes the battery hold really tight, and ive never had this issue ever again.
Hope.i.could help.

I had similar prob
I used to have lots and lots of apps installed on my phone ALONG with all the tmobile apps since my phone is NOT rooted.
At some point on, my phone would constantly reboot from the white screen with HTC logo.
Then I thought maybe i'm over doing my phone, so I tried uninstalling some of the apps that I don't use as often.
It helped me...
hope it helps you too =]
Look for a video named "HTC sensation random shutdowns/reboots problem SOLVED" on Youtube. I can't post any link as I'm a new user, but this simple fix worked for me!
Apparently this issue has nothing to do with software updates or custom roms. It is just a design flaw that prevents the battery from connecting completely to the pins
Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious; this is the first time I've rooted, so I'm still a bit new to all of this (though I have been reading around for weeks now).
So I just received my One X back from HTC today (needed to be fixed, don't ask), and, seeing that 2.20 had finally been rooted, got right to work in unlocking the bootloader. An hour later, I had CM10 flashed, installed, and running great (including separately flashing the boot.img). Installed most of my old apps, configured settings, everything was working great (tested calls, texts, HSPA+, and wifi). While I was setting a new voicemail message through AT&T Visual Voicemail, I started talking to a friend of mine (not on the phone), and the phone went to sleep. No big deal, I figured. However, I can't get the screen to turn back on now, and I'm a bit concerned. I don't think the phone's off, because it won't boot into bootloader (nothing happens when I press the power or the volume keys, no matter how long I hold for), and nothing happens when I plug into my computer either (the LED charging light doesn't even change). The only strange thing I can think of that could have caused this is that I had originally installed AOKP Milestone before going to CM10, and though I did a factory reset and reflashed boot.img before installing CM10, I didn't do a complete system wipe.
Does anybody have any idea what's going on? I sincerely hope I haven't bricked my phone... I'm going to try plugging it into a wall outlet for a little while and see if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance for any help!
So it just rebooted itself... I don't think I had anything to do with it; I'm pretty sure I wasn't pressing anything at the time. So at the very least, I have a working phone; however, I'd like to figure out what happened so that I can prevent it from happening again, particularly at a time where I actually need to call someone. Anybody have any idea what could have happened?

Right now, there isn't a fix for an ICJ brick. Absolutelygrim makes note of this on the last page of the thread. He is working like a mad man to get it.
I hate to be blunt, but read the threads carefully, pay attention to some of the posters signatures. There are multiple threads and multiple people who have links in their signatures to those threads(see mine). Just check back to the unbrick evita thread frequently. It will get fixed. I turned my phone over to grim and let hum brick it on purpose to downgrade my Hboot. So the method that's posted in the thread, works... Just not for ICJ, yet.

Unless I get ahold of a bricked phone.. Then I can bring a JTAG into this.. Neither my method or yarr's method will work for an ICJ flash on 2.20..
We are probably 5 feet away from a brick wall while traveling at 80 mph.. That's the best way to put it, we are almost out of ideas

Right guys,
I was just updating some apps on my One X, left it to its business and came back and it had turned off, so turned it on and it seems to load to the lock screen and then the screen goes blank and the phone turns off.
I have had it on charge (mains), tried the recovery, that doesn't help and I have tried a factory reset (when you hold the power and volume button) that doesn't work either.
Every time, just about gets to the lock screen freezes, goes blank and turns off.
It is totally stock software and hardware.
Locked to EE (Orange) network in the UK

Sorry, it is totally stock, not rooted or anything like that.
Just edited my first post too, sorry I was in a rush when I wrote it.
More info:
I have noticed that sometimes the little LED flashes red then green then pauses and repeats. I have seen this is an overheating problem?! The phone feels cool/warm to the touch, I know when playing the odd game the back of the phone gets really warm and it's no where near as warm as it can get.
More info:
Had it on charge overnight from the mains and it doesn't appear to have taken any charge, when it loads the lock screen it will show the battery level and when I press the power & volume buttons it tell me the battery level is too low.
Thanks again!
Mike
I've been having the same kinds of problems for months now.
I only use my OneXL for app testing fortunately, if I needed it as a normal phone I'd have given up and bought something new.
It often reboots after an hour or 2, even if it's doing "nothing", not even running any app after a restart.
Maybe it's overheating or something, but it seems more random to me. I was going to say that smacking it a bit doesn't cause any problem, but I just tried it now and it died. So maybe a PCB is cracked or there's some cold solder joints.
And yeah, the phone acts like the battery is dead. Again tonight I tried to boot it several times before it started up OK. It can end up dead but "powered" so I have to remove USB plug and hold power down 10-20 seconds to boot again.
I dunno, to me the phone is just broken, in effect.
I have had this same problem in the past with mine. Try disassembling it and pulling the battery.. then reassemble and see if that works, or could be a faulty power button

I just updated with the latest RUU for the HBoot or whatever, and it looks like the reboots may have stopped !
