[Q] ow detect if Desire S is s_off and backup system - HTC Desire S

Hello,
I've got a Desire S, how can I detect if it has a S-OFF or S-ON ?
How can I do a backup for my Desire S before any thing ?
Thank you

you need to enter boot loader and the screen will show you
Simply google how to get boot loader desire s
Swyped form ym Dersie S unsig XAD Permuim

In settings/power untick fast boot
turn your device off
hold vol down, click power
information you want will appear on screen (among other things)
Then you will be able to reboot device. You move trough the menu on vol up/down, and you select option with power button. DO NOT pull battery out, or some similar stunt. Navigate to "fastboot", click power, then in fastboot menu navigate to "power down", or "reboot" and click power button.
There is no need to perform backup before this because you make no changes to your device..
If you decide to root/install custom rom you have to do MUCH reading before doing so. Make sure to educate and be sure in what you are doing before trying ANYTHING with your device, because you can and will brick it if you don't.
And make sure to search before you post!

Thank you for your helps,
The Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool 0.4pre4, could work for Desire S with HBOOT-2.00.0002 ?

No.
Revolutionary cannot be installed if hboot is 2.00.0002.
If you are determined to carry on with installing custom rom there are two options.
1) Downgrade hboot [guide] then s-off with revolutionary, and you are ready to go
or
2) unlock bootloader [guide], flash recovery and you are ready to go...
Both methods have their advantages, but i would recommend to go with first.
It is much more difficult, but you will be forced to learn much stuff that surely will come handy later on, and i have to say that some roms didn't work when i installed them via second method.
Read forum. I know it's overwhelming, but answers to all these questions are here.
Good luck!

Looking for a little help with desire s on 2.3.5

Ok i have been going over every inch of the forums and all over the internet and i really run out of ideas.
i have a HTC Desire S on 2.3.5 with HBoot 2.00.0002, ive used HTCdev to unlock the bootloader and used superoneclick to root my phone (sort of) but my phone is stuck with S-ON.
i have tried everything i have found but the bootloader is stuck on the stock one, i have Rom Manager on my phone and ive tried the 4EXT but because of the phone being stuck on S-ON when it goes to the recovery part it errors out and i have to jack the battery out to get it to restart.....
HELP please :3
First your rom is rooted but system is not. You can install custom recovery , but use fastboot to flash it and all will works fine. For this problem when you go recovery you don't need to pull battery never pull it for this phone. Press volume up+volume down and then press power button and keep all pressed and phone will reboot normal

@RageReaper
Not really sure whats going on, cause you are confused and should do MORE reading.
Root is not the same as s-off, so look into that.
You unlocked your bootloader using HTCdev, thus you are still s-on and stock hboot but now can root your phone, have a custom recovery and flash roms. - NORMAL!!!!
Try flash the recovery in fastboot.
Just to be sure your hboot does say UNLOCKED at the top right?
yes it says its UNLOCKED but im trying to S-off my phone so i can make a copy of my OS so if something goes wrong i can always go back to it
so whats the best way to S-off my desire s?, Thank you in advance and to the people that will help
@RageReaper
You can do that once you install a custom recovery. Nandroid backup..
Ive managed to root my older android phones but this is really starting to bug me I can't get nandroid to work because after I used superoneclick I installed Rom manager to make a back up and it did the clockwork mod but the recovery part of my hboot errors out this is why I'm asking for help because I think I dropped the ball on this one
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
As said before in post 2+3, use fastboot to flash recovery.
Install clockworkmod, see here under section 1, step 2.

It doesn't matter if the guides are talking can't s-off phone's and different hboot's, they will work still.
Do the following,
-Turn off fastboot menu/settings/power/
fastboot (on the phone)
-Turn on USB debugging menu/Settings/
Applications/Development/ USB debugging (on
the phone)
Okay, get into fastboot, boot into your hboot (switch phone off and the
press power+vol down)
Plug your phone in,
Now your phone is plugged in and in hboot, press the power button once, it'll say something like fastboot usb.
Follow the link I gave you now.

[Q] desire s hboot problem

hi there, i have a problem that i need help with.
i used a xtc clip to s-off my desire s running official sense 3.0 gingerbread rom, and everything worked fine, but then i flashed the wrong hoot on to the device.
i flashed the eng hboot 0.98.200 and now, it doesn't boot. what i wanted to ask is how can i make the device work again? if i install a custom recovery, will i then be able to flash a custom rom?
any help will be appreciated.
What recovery do you have at present? stock?
Please put the details from your boot loader screen
You should be able to use fast boot to flash a custom recovery and then load a custom ROM from sd card.
You'll find instructions on how to use adb and fast boot in one of the guides in the INDEX thread see my signature for link
Swyped from my Desire S using XDA Premium
yes i have stock recovery.
this is the info from my boot loader screen:
SAGA PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.98.2000 (PG88*****)
RADIO-3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC-boot
not sure what other info you need.
could you do a step by step thing for me to follow, as i am not confident doing it on my own.
also one other thing, i havnt rooted the device, but am s-off
First things first follows the instructions on this guide to instal the windows adb and fast boot utilities http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272595 onto your PC, download the simple files from the attachment on the first post.
Although i believe that the success of this approach will hinge on whether you ever enabled the option
Settings> applications> development>USB debugging = on
Did you ever do this?
as I suggested before though look in the INDEX and read some of the guides in the guide section
Which country/region did the phone come from? What language?
Your profile suggests you're from the UK?
Swyped from my Desire S using XDA Premium
yes i did do this but during the xtc clip process, it cleared everything off the phone, but not sure if this setting will be checked still.
yes my phone is a uk orange device.
Tell me when you've installed fast boot on your PC
Swyped firm ym Desire S unsig XAD Permuim
i installed fastboot and adb on my pc beginning of last week, end of week before last.
thank you for the assistance. I managed to flash clockwork mod recovery, using fast boot on my pc, and now all I need to do is flash a rom!

Need help flashing/rooting

I'm not a n00b when it comes to stuff like this. I was flashing phones since ever, the last one being HD2, flashing HSPL etc, but these newer HTC devices confuse me a bit, and no help article here on XDA didn't explain in detail what's what about Desire S flashing.
Now i've bought a second hand Desire S and have noticed things aren't the same like with HD2.
The phone bootloader looks like this:
*** LOCKED ***
SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-2.00.0002
RADIO-3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC-boot
Now i figured what s-off is, but this LOCKED sign above confuses me so i'm restraining myself from flashing untill i'm sure which way i'm going.
Also, what's fastboot option in the bootmenu? (i'm also pulling the battery out to get out of the menu, don't wanna reboot through that fastboot just in case)
So, anyone care just to point me in short what to do?
I'd like to unlock the phone completely so i can root it and flash it later on.
Better safe than sorry.
Thanks everyone
You are s-off so locked/unlocked doesn't matter.
what recovery do you have?
You should also instal an ENG boot loader, see the links in my signature
Swyped form ym Dersie S unsig XAD Permuim
I don't have any recovery installed, when i enter recovery through hboot it just shows a phone icon with a red warning triangle. What recovery is the best? I've been using CWM mostly and would like to keep using it as i'm used to it.
Can i install CWM from this thread http://goo.gl/Uq3m5 since i don't know what method was used for S-off (if that matters at all)
My bootloader is in english, should i install another bootloader anyway?
Also, now that i have s-off, should i downgrade my bootloader or keep it? I don't know what method was used for s-off as the phone was bought second hand.
This was so much easier with GS2, now i feel sorry i sold it few months ago...
Try to follow the last post advice from tectas in the following thread in order to flash a recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620821
First ensure you have
settings....applications....development... USB debugging=ON
Settings....power...fast boot =OFF
I wouldn't bother downgrading, later on try to instal the ENG boot loader, see link on my sig.
Swyped form ym Dersie S unsig XAD Permuim
Thanks, is that for 4Ext recovery?
Is there a simpler way to root and install CWM, as i said i'd like to keep using CWM?
What's the use of flashing ENG boot loader?
EDIT: Oh great, now all of a sudden my phone has random restarts all on his own, or when i finish a call. What's wrong now? Could i have screwed something by yanking the battery in hboot?
While yanking the battery is dangerous it risks killing phone, not creating the issue you describe, check that the battery is fitted properly, try putting a piece of folded paper on top of battery to ensure it doesn't lose contact
Not sure which recovery that is, once you have rooted you can simply flash cwm through ROM manager
did you change your ROM?
ENG hboot enables you more freedom with hboot and more functionality in recovery
Swyped form ym Dersie S unsig XAD Permuim
No, the rom is stock Sense 3.0, Android 2.3.5.
I'll try flashing that recovery you suggested.
All went well. I flashed 4Ext recovery, and installed AOKP Build 34, all is well now.
Thanks a lot for your help

[MISC] Flashing ENG HBOOT | Rolling back to S-ON - The Noob Way

Hi all
I noticed that many of us while trying to flash HBOOT's brick our devices as there is no single thread and no single unified noob proof solution for flashing Revolutionary's S-Off 'ed+ Rooted Desire S all the way from HBOOT version 6.98.1xxx to 0.98.2000 (PG8810000).
Hope this helps..
Ok, less talking; more work
This Thread will help you if:
- if you want to change your HBOOT version to 0.98.2000 (PG8810000)
- if you want to S-On your previously S-Off 'ed Desire S as to make use of warranty (as there is no way of making a S-Off device having Revolutionary's HBOOT v.6.98.1002 -to- S-on again without flashing the HBOOT again).
- AFAIK, if you want to flash an RUU (read ROM Update Utility AKA the stock ROM installer) you won't be able to do it you are S-off 'ed using revolutionary method. So for doing that again you need to have the HBOOT version as something like 0.98.xxxx or 6.98.2000 (experts need your comments on this one)
This guide won't be telling you of how to make it S-on again (though theres a link to youtube step-by-step video tutorial of how to do it in the update section below; Do NOT ignore the video's ending ) but just of how you can go ahead with changing your Revolutionary's default flashed HBOOT version 6.98.10xx -to- v.6.98.2000 and then -to- v.0.98.2000 (PG8810000).
For more updated info please refer to "UPDATE" section below:
UPDATE:
Regarding the "Returning to Stock/making your phone S-ON" issue:
ok..I have not tried this but this right here guides you of how to S-ON and return your phone to total* factory like condition by installing an RUU thereby removing just everything..revolutionary, CWM..u name it; just like a real stock phone
But pls note that using an RUU (read ROM Update Utility AKA the stock ROM installer) will erase all your data! as you are flashing a stock RUU
And for this you need to change your HBOOT to 6.98.2000 (PG8810000) (as in the video linked above) OR to 0.98.2000 (PG8810000); so thats one of the other advantages of my guide..
Hope this helps..
Also, a lot of good folks here have been asking/suggesting me over why this method..? and why not the "dd commands method" / adb command(s) method? (all manually )
ok here's my take on this
Click to collapse
Prerequisites:
- you need an HTC Desire S phone
- HBOOT version 6.98.1xxx (how to check HBOOT version? just read step#4 & step#5 to find out your HBOOT version)
- S-OFF and Root 'ed using Revolutionary (also known as AlphaRevX; its the old name 'duh)
- your data cable and a working PC with HTC Fastboot Drivers installed (get them here)
- make sure you don't have HTC Sync software installed (check it in Add/Remove Programs found in Control panel of your PC); if it is then please remove it before starting with the following process!!!
WARNING:
DO NOT..I REPEAT AGAIN..DO NOT DISCONNECT IN-BETWEEN THE FLASHING PROCESS(Step#6 onwards) OR YOU MAY DAMAGE (READ "BRICK") YOUR PHONE IN A VERY BAD WAY!
Instructions:
1- download and extract the attached zip file in a empty folder (make sure NOT to touch/merge any of its contents)
2- make sure USB debugging is switched "ON" in your phone's: application settings menu >> development settings
3- also make sure that fastboot mode is switched "OFF" in your phone's: Power settings menu and by default your phone is configured to switch to charging mode when the cable is connected (JUST DO NOT CONNECT IT YET)
4- Now, reboot your phone into bootloader mode by first switching off your phone and then press the Power button and the volume down key simultaneously.
5- you should be able to see white screen with things like Revolutionary on top, S-OFF, HBOOT ... 6.98.10xx etc.
6- now go into the fastboot mode and then just connect you phone until the "fastboot" turns into "usb fastboot" OR "fastboot usb" either of these
7- now go inside the extracted folder named "FlashENGHBOOT698"
8- click on bat file named "Click This" and sit back
9- a black screen should popup as soon as you click on the bat [email protected] step#8 and you should see "OKAY" at the end of successful flash but it would be too quick so keep on lookout
10- select reboot on the bootloader's menu
11- reboot back to bootloader's menu to check if HBOOT's version has been changed to 6.98.2000
12- repeat the process from step 8 BUT make sure this time you go inside the other folder named "FlashENGHBOOT098" (notice the ZERO before 98)
13- follow the steps upto step#11 to check if the HBOOT's version has been changed to 0.98.2000 (PG8810000)
Voila!
Note:
This is just a compilation and a slightly edit of the batch file code to flash the second flash Image for the 0.98.2000 HBOOT All credits goes to the following people:

you have not mentiond the dd commands tut. this is used because of the re engineerd hboot 7.00.1002 upgrade people are doing, u cannot use any other method to get another hboot to your device after using 7.00.1002 hboot. as no fastboot and using the PG88IMG method just gets bypassed. so the only way is the dd commands. please add this to your guide thanks
If i pass your guide, will my phone be s-on or s-off?
Is it possible to apply this hboot version after? Or can i apply this hboot version right now?
Currently im on hboot-6.98.1002.
Hope someone will guide me real quick. Thanks!
@muselmann88 : 1. The bootloader is Eng S-off!
2. You're now with the Revolutionary Hboot and there is no reason to change. As long as you're using the dd commands to directly write the bootloader partition every bootloader can be uploaded. I haven't had any problems with this method.

I have PM you mate i have sent u everything u need to get yourself on the new eng hboot with that new eng hboot u can use ANY Rom without any problems
The hboot version that should be overwritten by "dd" command is 6.98.1002.
All the others are perfectly rewritten by a RUU or PG88IMG with a higher version.
Only Revolutionary (not AlpharevX) hboot has write protection. There is not only version check in that process
Thanks to the OP!
Just got a Desire S and so far done this little lot:
I've downgraded the ROM to 1.28 to get HBOOT 0.98
S-OFF'ed using Revolutionary.
Installed 4EXT Recovery 1.0.0.5 Touch RC3
Flashed VanillaICE ROM
and just followed this guide to get off the Revolutionary HBOOT and to the ENG HBOOT 0.98.2000.
And it worked flawlessly!
Thanks again!
EDIT: and somewhere in that lot I have also updated the radio to the latest one from the Radio thread!

Hi,
The fastboot method gets bypassed if we try to flash it by directly picking up the *.zip file from SD Card's root (that good 'ol PG88IMG.zip method).
Using the above method (my method at post#1) we are just literally pushing it through fastboot>>adb>>phone to get it flashed.. no questions asked from phone's side
srry abt the newbie/layman terms answer but this is how it actually works
Also regarding, the "dd commands" are never meant to be used for "noobs" as they are quite dangerous...more..more dangerous than to use fastboot instead of directly using adb commands.
Just because dd commands method exist doesn't mean we should go to that extent to brick our phone (a noob can easily do that while sipping beer and typing some command as bik instead of blk)
And hence I would not like newbie(s) coming in here, bricking their phones and stalking me
UPDATE:
Excerpt taken from here
There are actually two levels of S-OFF. The Bootloader (HBoot) and the Radio. Getting S-Off on the HBoot gives us everything we need, but doesn't actually turn off the @secuflag which is set in the radio. What it is possible to do is to flash a HBoot that believes the Radio is set to S-OFF, as the HBoot is responsible for setting that flag. Once the HBoot on the phone is S-OFF, we can write to all the partitions and basically do whatever we want, but it is possible to go one step further. Flashing a radio that is S-OFF and actually setting the @secuflag off gives 100% total access to every part of the phone and it's software, as it becomes network unlocked allowing to you to use any SIM and also allows you to flash a ROM from any carrier (known as Super CID). It also makes it nigh on impossible to permanently loose root no matter what you flash. Once you have radio S-OFF, it makes it much easier to flash new HBoots and ROMs even if you flash something that is locked down tight.
Setting the Radio to S-Off is not necessary, and gaining S-OFF on the HBoot is more than most people will ever need. Radio S-Off is just the last step of the puzzle, but it is worth noting the only points you can permanently brick your phone is flashing a radio or a HBoot, if either of these go wrong you will end up with a shiny expensive paper weight so there is risk involved.

If i pass your guide, will my phone be s-on or s-off?
Is it possible to apply this hboot version after? Or can i apply this hboot version right now?
Currently im on hboot-6.98.1002.
Hope someone will guide me real quick. Thanks!

As it looks to me, if you're running hboot-6.98.1002 already then you must have used revolutionary's tool to S-off your phone.
Therefore you are eligible to use the above guide to re-flash your hboot.
Infact you're having the same hboot version as I had after using revolutionary.
changing your hboot version to 0.98.2000 (PGI880000) will make sure that you can flash any RUU (official stock ROM) so that you could be s-off again
Though I am still getting working on it to have a simple 1-click solution for this too for ya noobs
Also, make sure you're rooted (though I would like some expert to comment on this; but AFAIK root is needed to flash the *.img file over fastboot; just search around forum as to be sure.)
Do it now! and you won't regret..

@muselmann88 : 1. The bootloader is Eng S-off!
2. You're now with the Revolutionary Hboot and there is no reason to change. As long as you're using the dd commands to directly write the bootloader partition every bootloader can be uploaded. I haven't had any problems with this method.

I would not really recommend using "dd commands" please see my reply over here

I read that i'll have boot problems with sense 4 roms, isn't that correct?
Could you please list the dd commands that i'll succeed in writing the bootloader to the partition.

Sense 4 requires you to have umm... HBOOT version 2.xxx and above? (experts?) anyways.. that cannot be categorized as "problem" its just another "prerequisite" for sense 4 based ROMs though am not sure if its an "official prerequisite" or a non official non
Also, please read my post abt dd commands here.

The hboot version that should be overwritten by "dd" command is 6.98.1002.
All the others are perfectly rewritten by a RUU or PG88IMG with a higher version.
Only Revolutionary (not AlpharevX) hboot has write protection. There is not only version check in that process

aha! Right on point
And thats one more reason I won't really..really recommend using dd commands to a noob/newcomers just for flashing from 6.98.10xx -over to-0.98.2000 (PGI880000).

I Give Up With ICS - Can I Revert Back To Gingerbread (Please)

Firstly thanks to everyone who give their time to help
My tech skills are useless, all these terms s-off, s-on, roms etc
is above my pay grade, my brain is fried i am jumping from thread to thread
trying to fix my wifi issue and it's driving me dilly.
I am on Android 4.0.3 - Sense 3.6, phone is rooted HTC-Dev and Flashed 4EXT.
I have been trying to fix the WiFi issue but im getting nowhere, i give up.
Can i revert back to Gingerbread?
Is there a step by step guide?
Help Appreciated
Thanks
1st: are you s-on or s.off?
If you are s-off you can extract the rom.zip from the appropriate GB RUU (but you dont tell what is) then rename it PG58IMG. Put in the root of your sd card (not in a folder) and reboot the device while holding down volume+ power button.
PG58IMG willbe automatically recognized and start to do its things. Then you will be prompted if you want to upgrade. Say yes by pushing volume up.
Wait untill the entire process is done and prompted to reboot (it may reboot itself a couple of times during the process, just do nothing and wait).
At the end of process you will be back to GB and need to set the phone like new. You will lose all data and settings.
Hope it helps.
How do i know if i'm S-off or S-on?
Used HTCDev to unlock bootloader then flashed 4EXT and something called
CWM-SuperSU-v0.96?
Thanks
This is the method i used:

Good day my dear friends,
Boring Intro------
Yesterday I was trying to root my wife's HTC Sensation which I upgraded to Official Middle East ICS 4.0.3 hboot 1.27.000 and I found this way by pure luck-----
I installed CMW and did the rooting while the device is S-ON
I'm not sure if this is a new method or was done before but I thought I'd share it to return some of your favors in this great forum.
I need to thank Mr.hasoon2000 because we will use his tol from the HTC One X forum.
Requirements:
1. Download the HTC One X All-In-One Toolkit V1.0 from this link, Thanks Mr.hasoon2000 I hope you don't mind me using your tool here.
2. Download the latest CMW recovery , choose the latest for Pyramid (The Sensation) in *.img. Here is the CMW 5.8.0.9 link.
3. Download SuperSU 0.88.zip, thanks Mr.Chainfire or from this link [23.04.2012] SuperSU v0.88.
Step By Step Method:
1. Copy the SupperSU.zip file to your SD root.
2. Extract the HTC One X All-In-One Toolkit V1.0 to the Disktop.
3. Connect your Mobile and make sure you're in the charging mood and your check USB development or debugging option.
4. Run the One X.exe application.
5. Install the HTC drivers.
****If you unlocked your Sensation's bootloader from HTCdev.com then skip step 6 ****
6. Register in HTCdev.com website, choose Unlock Bootloader, choose your device and follow the instructions. ~This May Void your Warranty~
7. Rename the CWM recovery to CWM5827, then copy it to HTC One X All-In-One Toolkit folder/Data folder/recoveries and replace the one inside.
8. Flush the CWM recovery using the toolkit, horray you installed CWM.
9. From Commands choose Boot into recovery and from CWM flush the SuperSU.zip.
10. Congratulations, You're Now ROOTED .
Unthick fastboot from your phone (should be under settings-Battery) Then reboot phone while holding volume down + power buttons and read what the bootloader says.
Or pull out and reinsert battery, then power up the phone while holding down volume
remove battery from phone
Remove any memory card installed in phone
put battery back into phone
press volume down..
While pressing volume down
Press power button...
Continue pressing both Until you enter bootloader
You will see white screen, print lots of writing in different colored text, but the top line will say 's-on' or 's-off'

By the way I dont understand why you want to go back to GB. Once you are back you will be prompted to update to ICS again!.
Why dont you run directly a stock ICS RUU and see it it solves your issue?. In case you are S-On that would be the easiest way (the RUU).
If you want to go back to the way the phone was when you first got it, no root or anything, use an RUU
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672425
That's everything you need to know. Basically run a program in Windows with the phone plugged in and it'll do all the work for you.
OK guys looks like i'm S-ON
PYRAMID PUT SHIP S-ON RL

Will that put me back to Gingerbread?

No, if you are s-on the easiest way is to run the appropriate RUU.exe (still ICS not GB). But first you need to make some search and detect what is the right RUU for you according to your country, cid and mid.
When you will find it, just download the exe and, plug your phone to the pc and execute the RUU.exe
You cannot go back to GB as you are S-On.
RUU works for either the same software version or up not down.
