HELP! *** LOCKED *** Desire S - HTC Desire S

I tried to unroot my Desire S using an official RUU, halfway into the installation of the RUU it stopped and said I had the wrong RUU look for another correct one. After this I have not been able to get past the bootloader screen of my device. The screen reads:

Please can people link me to threads or help me. I really have no idea what to do and I have just bought the phone from ebay rooted and I do not know what to do! Please please help.
Thank you

You are locked and have S-on.
You need to downgrade and use revolutionary to unlock the bootloader and S-off.
My signature has all the threads you need.
If you are not comfortable with downgrade, you could use HTC dev unlock, which can be found in the guides in general section
What brand is your phone?
Try to run the below command and paste it here
fastboot getvar all
Swyped from my Desire S waiting for Kernel 3, WAKE UP HTC

It's recommended that you remove the serial and iemi codes before you paste
Swyped form ym Dersie S unsig XAD Permuim

Its a HTC Desire S unlocked to any network but running on Orange (UK)
Thank you for your help, I'll try them today and reply with what happens

I had this exact problem last night the only way I solved it is to get the very latest RUU it starts with 2.10 maybe a member can point. U in the right place for the newest ruu. Run the ruu when in fastboot and ye phone will turn back on again then u have to either downgrade again or use htcdev.com to unlock boot loader

My advise
Read a lot before you do anything.
Be sure what you are doing and why before trying out.
Don't rush

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but i've had a look about and not come accross my answer.

Hi,
It will unlock everything for you.
But HTC will then have a record of what you have done, and this will give you warranty problems, should they ever arise.
Thanks for the help guys!
Much appriciated. I've gone as far as getting my unlock code sent to e-mail, but i've not actually flashed it yet as i was rather unsure.

Hi,
It's locked to advanced fastboot, like installing radio.
Basic fastboot like get cid is still available.
Malybru, thats pretty much why i'd want it unlocked - I'm so used to flashing radio etc via Fastboot. I know you can do it via HBoot with PG58IMG, but i've been doing it via Fastboot with my Streak, Desire HD etc and just find it easier doing it like that.

Hi,
I know what you are saying.
But you will invalidate your warranty by doing anything from HTCDEV...
EDIT:
You can always return to 1.17 HERE
this what throws me off alot, unlocking the Bootloader gives us fastboot commands, which i dont want to lose, once you have done the Revolutionary you get s-off which takes security off to flash radio etc, once we update the hboot, it says locked but its truly not, and it still says s-off so once we do the unlock from htcdev we still have s-off so fastbooting flash radio should still work since that security is still off
i searched and asked there is no real answer as everyone jus shrugs and says use the PD58IMG to do things then the thread dies or OP says ok that will be fine
and it will not fully void your warranty if its any type hardware issue, it only voids software side, as say you did a bad flash and bricked it, if they recovery it and see you are unlocked then yes its voided, but if the digitizer not responsive, power button stuck, backlight died, whatever that is still coverd
I know i could return to 1.17, but would that mess up the fact i'm running RCMix ICE 4.0.3? I'm no desperate for the Fastboot commands, but just knowing i have access to them is a weight off my mind.
I've never needed to use my HTC warranty, but loosing access to it is putting me off a little. I think i'll lay off unlocking for a while.

Oh dear, locked does not mean only basic fastboot. The hboot version determines the basic fastboot. 1.17 has advanced fastboot but none others do

If you've gone as far as getting the unlock code emailed across then go for it.
I unlocked mine with HTCDev first, now i have hboot 1.23 unlocked and s-off..
It's not going to clear my S-Off or Super CID i take it then?
Thats the only main reason i've been holdinf off doing it, the warranty is a downside, but it's not a huge thing. I bought the phone second hand, so i've no idea who it was first registered to anyway.
I can't answer that one i'm afraid as I did it the other way around, HTC first, then revolutionary.
TBH i'm not sure what the difference is between having an unlocked bootloader and S-Off, or whether they are one and the same. When I did the HTC unlock it said it had been successful but still said S-Off in HBoot so i used the revolutionary method as a follow up.
In retrospect I think the HTC unlock did work, at least in part, because i've flashed the most recent ruu (complete phone image direct from HTC) and have both 'unlocked' at the top and 's-off' showing in hboot. most if not all users who have not done the HTC unlock end up with a 'locked' 's-off' combination.
this doesn't really help with your dilemma unfortunately but i'm sure somone with a definitive answer will be along...
I just went ahead and did it... when the screen appeared asking if i wanted to unlock, i vol upped to Yes and pressed Power. Nothing happened, tried again, nothing happened. Pressed Power on NO my phone restarted.
Went back into Hboot, now says *** Unlocked ***, Ship S-OFF RL, and Supercid says 11111111, so all went well it seems, Only odd thing is, my rom seemed to factory reset, and the RCMix ICE splash screen has changed to the stock Android Spash Screen. All seems ok though, still rooted, etc?
Sounds promising. It's a bit of a steep learning curve at first for sure and not all of the guides and info are in plain english. Still, all's well that ends well.
All seems fine. Reading on HTCDev.com, it does factory reset your Rom and Settings, so i decided to just reflash RCMix Ice and all is well and good now.

i'd like to know if the "taco root" is working for my desire s and my aims.
since i cant download it anymore i cant try it, but i like to know if it would work if i get it somehow. sooner or later it should be up again.
my aim is to flash a unbranded stockrom like "RUU Saga S HTC Europe 2 10 401 8 Radio 20 4801 30 0822U 3822 10 08 04 M release 225161 signed exe" and root it afterwards (is it the best choice?) there for i need a supercid right?
to get there i need an unlocked bootloader like revolutionary would provide me. but for revolutionary i need another hboot version, which i can only downgrade if i alrdy got a unlocked bootloader. right?
is there anyway to get where i wanna get to without using htcdev? for some reason i dont wanna use htcdev.
else i should go for:
unlock with htcdev.
downgrade to HBOOT 0.98.0000
use revolutionary for s-off
change cid
run unbranded ruu

thats it?
thanks so far

[Q] Cannot for the life of me get S-On!! *Free Beer if anyone fixes it!*

Hello all,
Been trying for around 4 or 5 evenings constantly been trying to get S-On on this HTC Desire S so it can be sent back for warranty repair!
I've successfully installed stock ROM version:
RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11_M_release_177977_signed.exe
And I've tried every hboot.img out there, including one from rom.zip using the above exe but S-On will not go back on!!
Am I missing something? I have root and am very familiar with ADB and fastboot so please do get technical!
Have tried every guide out there but to no avail...as well as every HBOOT version - 0.98.0002 and 2.something and also had PG88IMG on it - still cannot get S-On!! I'm going insane here!
If anyone manages to get this fixed - I will buy them a beer!

It was through revolutionary, that's why you have a 6.x hboot version, and why the word is shown
I'd suggest that you flash the 98.2 eng hboot, see link for it in the index thread, see link to index in my signature
Then once the eng hboot is installed, then try to run ruu again
It didn't previously work as hboot won't be downgraded through ruu route

What about this XTC Clip, can that help?
The XTC clip is a hardware device that can unlock S-OFF HTC phones, regardless of the software.

I did not use any hardware to unlock it - I've never had to use hardware to unlock any phone I've owned.
So I'm assuming that safely rules out XTC Clip?
Yes, XTC Clip is a hardware device used to unlock (s-off) htc devices. It cannot be reversed. If you S-OFF'd via XTC Clip, you can't go back to S-On. Since you say you never used hardware, so it's safe to assume you didn't use XTC Clip. Also, HTC-Dev wasn't available months ago, when you said you did the S-OFF, plus it's not possible to flash bootloaders with HTC-Dev unlock either.
This leaves us with two possibilities - one is you used AlphaRevX or Revolutionary (same thing) to S-OFF, but i can't see why you can't S-On again. The other is that your device shipped s-off. Are you sure you had to S-OFF, and your device wasn't shipped s-off?

I honestly do not know - this phone was bought for my sister and she wanted MIUI putting on it as she had seen my phone - she doesn't know where it was bought from nor does she have the original box so I think it is impossible to tell!
It was definitely bought within the UK, also 70% sure it was bought from a shop like Carphone Warehouse SIM free.
Do they often ship as S-Off? If so, to get it back to stock, do I just run RUU again?
Well, some lucky owners from India and China reported that their device was shipped S-OFF in the first month of the device's release. Who S-OFF'd the phone? If you don't really remember, then it was probably shipped S-OFF. Just run RUU, remove recovery and put on the Hboot that has no REVOLUTIONARY or ALPHAREVX on it (ie no sign that the device was tampered with). Try to act stupid and say you have no clue what S-OFF is.
PS - My friend here sold his device a while back. It was S-OFF via XTC Clip, and i had flashed many ROMs on it. I just restored the stock backup i had made, didn't even remove 4EXT recovery. No one checks such stuff here, most shopkeepers have no clue what "ROOT" is

Ahh agreed but my sister is returning it to the family friend who bought the phone for her - who I THINK is returning it to HTC...not entirely sure.
I S-Off'd the phone - well, it came to me stock (I presume) and I flashed the custom ROM/bootloader etc, I tinker with so many devices/phones/tablets/PCs - I cannot remember what steps i took on something 2 weeks ago, no matter 6 months ago!
Cheers for your help, I'll keep this thread updated!
Something additional, maybe its useful information.
I noticed that you got the asterisk (*) inside the brackets behind PG88 at your bootloader, if i remember correctly, this is an indicator for a xtc unlocked phone.
I'm still wondering why you had the revolutionary hboot version, but maybe it has been unlocked twice?!

I read that also, i meant he maybe got it xtc s-off from the shop and maybe missed it and s-offed with revolutionary.
I also used xtc and also changed bootloader and got the asterisk.
And if i remember correctly at some thread Ben made the guess it could be related to xtc, because he and some other xtc users got it, but the revolutionary users didn't, but can be that i remember wrong.

Locked Hboot with S-On?

Hi, ive just got a phone off ebay and trying to s-off it.
Problem is that when i go into the hboot it says:
**LOCKED**
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
Revolutionary tool says invaild key when i run it.
Any ideas how i can get S-OFF? Maybe the guy who had it before me has made it S-ON again to sell it? Any help would be much appreciated!
I just S-offed last week, and i am a complete noob when it comes to this stuff...i also was getting the invalid key. I did a SEARCH (lol) here and found out that the letters i was typing were wrong.
My solution: copy and paste the revolutionary beta key into notepad, then type the keys in notepad to confirm you are typing the correct letters
I found out that the "I" is actually a lower case "L"
Which hboot version? Anything over 1.18.0000 isn't supported
Sent from my HTC Sensation with Beats Audio using xda premium
I read that this could be the after-math of someone unlocking through htc dev and not doing it correctly. So I have to back track to go forward.
It's not got ICS yet, still running GB. There is a system update waiting but I want to root first before any update.
Hboot 1.18.000
I did try the copy and paste. The one major issue here is that on the hboot screen it says **LOCKED** at the top shortly followed by S-ON which tells me that somethings very different.
1.18 has a "locked" status on top. That's normal. Revolutionary is compatible with 1.18, but it's possible that it was rooted with htcdev...
There is no "unlocked" 1.18 hboot. That's why rev will downgrade you to 1.17.
I'm running 1.18 with s-off by use of revolutionary and then reflashing the 1.18 hboot I extracted from 1.50.531.1ruu. It shows "locked" at the top as it did to begin with...
Maybe try flashing the ruu and trying revolutionary again...
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
Unlock bootloader, S-Off and rooting are 3 different things.
HtcDev unlock bootloader but it doesn't neither s-off nor root the device.
To prevent "headhaches" is better follow these steps:
1) Unlock bootloader through HtcDev (then it will show **unlocked** on top but still S-On with 1.18 Hboot)
2) S-Off by revolutionary (don't remember if it downgrade Hboot to 1.17 but I think it does).
3) Install a custom recovery.
4) Root the device
Hope it helps.
COMPLETELY ignore the advice to unlocking on HTCDev - you're letting HTC know you're rooting your phone. ONLY use Revolutionary to get true S-OFF
To the OP: HBOOT 1.18.0000 WILL say Locked at the top. This is 100% normal and HTC brought it in with the 1.18.0000 HBOOT. S-ON is also normal so what you're looking at is designed that way and is how my phone arrived when I first got it
I think you should try get the beta key back or make sure paste it to get correct keys. I think the ***Locked*** won't be problem. Revolutionary will unlocked it. If you got error during root process you may want try Taco Root method during Revolutionary process.
Thanks for your help guys!
It was a very stupid mistake on my part not copying the key from revolutionary over correctly. I was entering O's instead of 0's (zeros). Notepad was the saving grace after 3 hours of reading that showed me the correct key and stopped me from trying other methods and maybe screwing up the process.
I'd never seen a **Locked** with S-ON hboot screen before and not knowing what a person has done before you on a phone when buying off ebay can lead you into unknown territory.
S-Offed and running some Sense 4 now. Beautiful! The wife is pleased! Wouldn't mind some Sense 4 on my Gnex now - Never thought i'd say that!
Thanks all for your help!

[Q] Won't update to Jelly Bean AT&T Unlocked Phone

Hello Guys
I've been trying desperately to update my AT&T One X but I just cant.
This is the story:
I have a SIM Unlocked AT&T, bootloader locked, unrooted device that was bought in the US and I use it in Mexico with Telcel carrier. I tried to update it to Jelly Bean through the AT&T software updates option but I always got the service unavailable message and after a little research I found that since I was not on the AT&T Network it won't recognize it thus won't upgrade.
I started to look around for information on how to upgrade. This is what I have done so far but still no success:
First, I downloaded the official RUU 3.18 from the HTC website. After a couple of minutes I got an error Message 158 - Image Error. I am pretty sure I was using the Evita - Cingular - US version so it doesn't make any sense.
So I downloaded the OTA in a Zip file, renamed it to update.zip, Still no success.
I unlocked the bootloader, tried RUU and OTA but no success.
Rooted the phone, no success.
I found out that RUU with CID 1111111 and S-ON can brick my phone, before knowing this I had already tried it but nothing happened, same error 158.
I installed clockworkmod and made a backup, and it has been very helpful.
I tried then to install the ZIP for the OTA through ClockWorkMod in recovery but also get an error message and won't install it.
I have OS version 1.73, so I checked that can't upgrade directly to 3.18. Tried to upgrade to ver 1.85 with no success, both RUU and OTA, RUU gives me error 155 - Unknown. I tried this RUU with and without HTC Sync and still the same, tried OTA with the Bootloader Relocked and no success.
I tried to flash a stock rom with Jelly Bean through ClockWorkMod, successfully did it but after that the phone just keep restarting, showing the HTC Quietly brilliant splash screen and restart again.
I flashed only the radio to see if after this it could install the OTA but didn-t work
I restored and recovered my phone and I-m still here, with an outdated version of the OS.
Tried to look for updates directly on the phone with a code that will make a Check In service to google OTA Checkers with no success.
Any other advises, tips, tricks or something that can help me out?
This is what I have after trying almost everything:

S-OFF first (sticky in original android dev section)
Then Run the AT&T 3.18 RUU exe file. There's a few links in the RUU part of redpoints resource compilation thread. There's a link in my signature.
Let me know if you have more questions.

Please tell us exactly what you want to do. Also please give as much information as possible. What is your phone status? What are your bootloader details?

I think so.
Thanks!
You can download RUU's and OTA's from HTC support to update your phone officially, as long as it hasn't been modified.

But this is AT&T phone that my friend brought from US. We unlocked it in India and now when I am trying to see the update software it says service is unavailable. I think it requires AT&T service to upgrade. Can you please help if I can update officially from HTC website.
Thanks

That's exactly what I said, you need to go to the HTC support page and download all of the appropriate RUU's and/or OTA's there and flash them manually.

If the phone hasn't been modified, the chances are very low. There are rare instances of official OTAs and RUUs bricking unmodified devices. Possibly due to corrupt file when updating hboot. But its pretty rare.
