I can't seem to find a definitive answer, but is the boot.img just the kernel, or is there more to it?

As far as i know, the boot.img contains the ramdisk and the kernel. There may be more than that though.
Ah, OK. Thanks for the info.

Anyone in this subforum got a working link to a clean stock, deodexed rom? Searching the forum, I find jkilo has pulled his links, the modaco release is no longer available. . .
I realize this is old stuff now. . .

Yeah, I think Miktouch 0.7 is the closest to stock you'll find, at least for the latest official ROM. I've seen some links to the earlier ROMs but don't know if they're still valid or not.
Yeah, I've got MikTouch, and I dig it. But I'm trying to start from scratch, just for the ... of it.

You could just go to the beginning of post #2 HERE.
This stuff is surprisingly hard to find. Anybody have that boot.img? I'm trying to flash the engKernel and I want to make sure I have something to go back to first. Playing with no-knox root methods which are flying around.
Going off of what I read from another comment somewhere on another thread,
you can download your firmware version and extract the boot.img from it and flash it back.
Hoping for someone to shine some light on this.
Ah. Yeah I was thinking that I would be able to do that. But where would I download my stock firmware version from? Appologies if this is public knowledge, I usually find it downright impossible to find stuff on XDA

That's the AT&T stock firmware. Has a kernel for a totally different CPU actually, and probably other issues too, like the radio. But thank you very much for trying to help. Maybe that will be useful to someone else.

My apologies. Thought your question was in the AT&T sub-forum, too many tabs open. In which case I'm assuming yours is the G930F:

Reverting back to the stock kernel quickly has been my use case. Don't need a computer/fastboot.
