Hey guys,
My sister got a Desire s second hand, but it seems to be locked to Vodafone Ireland ie. only accepts Vodafone sims (apart from a week or so when it would accept any sim.) Vodafone claims they have no lock on it and never did. I'm not sure if it originally was sold through vodafone. After being in contact with HTC they claim the phone being S-OFF is the cause of the problem, and the only fix would be to send it off to them to get the original software back on it. It's not rooted (apps requiring super user privileges won't work) but whatever the guy before me did he messed it up somehow.
Since she purchased it late last year it has received on OTA update. It's currently running Android 2.3.5 and HTC Sense 3.0.
I'm not entirely sure whether it needs to be returned to s-on or if there's another solution, and could really use some help.
Details:

This phone sounds like it's Sim locked, which means it's locked to the carrier
Can only suggest that you attempt to either get Vodafone to unlock it for you for a charge, or else try a Sim unlock website, they charge about €$15, simply google for
'htc Sim unlock desire s'
S-off is a good thing and will not cause you this problem

We've been in contact with Vodafone. They say they have no record of the phone and they never had a lock on it. In store they said they don't have the phone on their database, which means it wasn't sold through them. Out of ignorance I'm assuming that whoever had the phone beforehand tried to unroot it and put a Vodafone locked rom on it, if that's even possible? I tried to use an unlocking website but they said they don't have an unlocking code for it/can't unlock it.
It's all very strange and suspicious to me! Thanks for trying to help though
I don't think that you can have a networked locked ROM?, but as you are soff you can always flash another ROM and see what happens, I'd suggest the one that I'm on, as it's stable and fast.
follow the link to the index I'm my signature, and spend some tine to read some of the guides in the initial sections to familiarize yourself with terminology and basics principles, you will not need to use HTC dev so ignore that section.
And I'll help to walk you through flashing another ROM
Although I'm reasonably sure this isn't ROM related, if Vodafone don't have record of the phone, then it makes sense why an unlock site couldn't unlock the phone

I'll have a read through that tonight and I'll get back to you then.

Hello, I have a HTC ChaCha and was wondering that there are some people who have S-OFF or use an XTC-Clip to root their handsets.
But unfortunately I was unaware of this 'S-ON' and I purchased a phone on contract for 24 months and now when it's time for ROMS - I'm stuck.
So, my question is are all editions of the HTC ChaCha on Three UK 'S-ON' or is there a way that I can grab an 'S-OFF' by swapping my phone.

Most all phones that leave the HTC factory are S-ON. You would have to be extremely, extremely lucky to get an S-OFF handset off the production line, in fact it'd be damn near impossible.
You can't get S-OFF by flashing another ROM.
I'm not sure if the rEVOlutionary software tool supports the ChaCha, you may have to find yourself a Clip (or someone nearby who could loan it to you) to gain S-OFF.
Good luck!
Hi,how can I unlock my Desire S ..... I find lot of tutorials how to unlock Desire but nothing for desire S.....
??
Be more specific on the subject!
You want S-OFF, ROOT or UNLock bootloader?
Answer!
Official S-OFF is NOT possible EVER, I think!
Unofficial S-OFF is available... use 2nd pinned topic in this forum!
ROOT is possible after you S-OFF your phone and/or Unlock your bootloader officialy!
Unlock is comming officialy, DS is not on the list yet, but it will be eventually...
With official Unlock you get S-ON STILL but with bootloader unlocked which gives you right to root your phone!
So S-OFF and unlocked bootloader arent the same things? Then what is the relationship between them.
If by "unlock" you mean your phone is sim locked, then you going to have to use that same trick you used to obtain your phone, money.

Basically you need to pay the provider you obtained your phone from, to unlock your phone. It's NOT something you can do for free.
I just unlocked my desire s with a code from unlockfusion on eBay. I can recommend him if you're looking to buy a code.
The only way to SIM unlock Desire S is to pay...either for a code from various sites, to the operator or through XTC clip. Pick the one that suits you most. But note that if you unlock it via third party (site or XTC clip) your warranty is void
I try to bay code from 3 or 4 sites... and they send me same code, but when i type code its say wrong code, and phone is still locked...
sorry on bad english ...
Are you, by some chance, on Telenor Serbia? If yes, you can not unlock your phone via any unlock code bought online, because Telenor locks its phones on its own - not via HTC like most of provider.
Only way to unlock phone is to wait until the contract ends and then get code from Telenor for free or find service with XTC clip (but beware, this voids your warranty).
I used Revolutionary to S-Off. I allowed Revolutionary to install Clockwordmod as recovery. I then used One Click to root. Finally I flashed Virtuous ROM Affinity and it works very well. Just wished I had done it earlier. The ROM has Sense 3.5 and it very smooth.

This has nothing to do with the topic in this thread. Here it is discussed about SIM unloking, that is using the phone with a SIM from another carrier
Sent from nowhere, over the air...
Ok, so this is my first post on XDA so sorry if I sound stupid in some of these questions. Here is the deal, a few days ago I bought a HTC ONE X from craigslist, the guy told me it was from AT&T and when I played with the phone it had all the AT&T bloatware on it. I brought it home and thought I had to buy an unlock code to use it with simple mobile but when I put the sim card in it recognized it and I had service, the thing is when I looked at the phone it did not have AT&T logo on top of the screen or any off the usual fcc and other stuff on the back of the phone on the bottom.
First question, is the phone really an AT&T model or some other version with the duel core s4 processor?
Also, when I press the "AT&T Software Update" button and press check for updates it dose nothing and I know the 1.85 update is being rolled out right now my version is 1.73.502.1 710rd.
Second question, can anyone please explain to me how to update the phone manually?
My phone is not rooted or have unlocked bootloaders and I want to keep it that way. Also I do not have AT&T im using Simple Mobile.
Thanks.
if it doesn't have the at&t logo, then it's not the at&t version (One XL). if it's not an at&t version, then you won't get an over-the-air (OTA) update... it may be the international version of the One X or the Rogers One XL.
Thats the thing though, no type of branding on the phone except the htc logo on the screen and on the back and the beats logo but the software is from AT&T boot screen, bloatware, and right above "about" in the options it says "AT&T Software Update" in the options menue. Is there anyway this could be some internal testing unit that AT&T employees used to test the network on or some thing before the release? A developer unit?
In Settings>About>Hardware information>Processor, what does it say?
Also, how do you know its not bootloader unlocked? If you go into Hboot, does it say LOCKED, UNLOCKED, or RELOCKED?
when i go into HBoot here is what it says:
locked
evita xd ship s-off RH
cid-11111111
hboot-1.09.0000
radio-0.16.32.09.09_3
opendsp-v25.1.0.32.0405
emmc-boot
apr 2 2012,21:08:24
Under the processor it says "duel core"
There is only two versions right? The duel core s4 and quad core tegra 3.

Edit: I'm really slow on these posts...
You might want to hold on to the phone. If it's truly S-OFF some of the DEV's might be interested in talking to you. Cheers.
I can haz S-off phone?
Sorry for sounding like a noob, but whats s-off? and what can developers do with it?

S-off means all security is off. None of the partitions on the phone are protected and all are writable.
It means you have TOTAL control of the hardware on the phone.
Essentially it would allow us to directly be able to flash, recovery, hboot, make significant changes to how the phones operates versus doing it via the CWR.... Not only limited to kernel, radio, etc...
Pretty much means you're a XDA badass, you and niceppl are some lucky devils.
Hail Cobra!
oh so im guessing the guy that sold it to me did not buy it from AT&T huh?

it's POSSIBLE this phone came from AT&T but wherever it came from you have a goldmine.

Hi, so I bought an HTC Desire S and it's locked to Orange UK. I S-OFFed and tried sieempi's method but it's still network locked. Is there any generator or tweak like the HTC Desire/Sensation to get the code? It's urgent as this is my new personal smartphone.
Thanks in advance

Urgent? No it's not. On Christmas day nothing is really urgent.
You can either ask your current network provider for the unlock code (may have to pay them) or get hold of an XTC-Clip (Buy, rent, shop ...) and definitely have to pay.
There is no software method for network unlock on the Desire S.
There's a xtc-clip page on xda with members that have access to them
This Christmas I've decided to put a mistletoe in my back pocket....so all the people I dont like can kiss my ass.

But there must be a unlock code somewhere in those mmcblk blocks, like on the One S, Desire (bravo) and the Sensation, why wouldn't there by any on the Desire S? HTC must have hidden it somewhere... Any guess?
Here's a guess: this phone is out for almost a couple of years now, and if the way to unlock it was so simple that a noob could guess it - I guess it would have been unlockable by now.
You can, of course, read and learn how SIM unlock is done on the other "sister" phones (G2/DZ/DHD/MT4G), and what's preventing DS from having the same treatment, and what's needed to make it work. But something tells me that you won't do that.
I have a OneXL with AT&T. It came with the 2.20 firmware. I accepted the 3.18 OTA, and was stuck without root for a while (dumb, but no big deal). After the new exploit came out for 3.18, I unlocked and got S-Off, and things have been fine, I ran a few sense ROMs, settling on ViperXL 4.20.
Well, I work in a IT asset disposal warehouse where I'm a computer tech, and some of the guys in the warehouse who do inventory thought it was a good idea to steal some smartphones we get in for recycling. Enter new company rule: No cellphones in the building. If you are caught with one, you get suspended, and your phone gets confiscated while they make sure it isn't their property. So, my choices are to leave my phone at home all day, or leave it in my glove box in my car in the Texas heat in July/August. For the first week, I did not shut off the phone before leaving it in the glove box, but I do now. I started to get random shutdowns and call drops. I always make sure my phone is cooled by my A/C before using it.
I flashed the stock kernel (I had beastmode) and I flashed a fresh ROM to see if that would help. It didn't. I think there is a hardware problem with the phone that might be related to leaving it in my hot car while at work.
I decided to take my phone into AT&T as it is still under warranty, but I don't want them to see that I tampered with my bootloader. Is there anyway I can RUU to 2.20 or 3.18 and not get the "Re-Locked" message on the bootloader screen?
Is there a how-to guide for this?
Am I boned because I accepted the OTA before I unlocked/rooted?
You can run an RUU, relock the bootloader, and edit the "relocked" flag to read "locked" because you have s-off. As far as I know, at&t aren't really too worried about having ash unlocked bootloader but if you don't want to take the chance you can use the steps I outlined above.
Sent from my Evita
I've seen many reports of folks sending in phones to AT&T with unlocked bootloaders, and even custom ROMs, and still having the warranty honored. Haven't seen any reports of AT&T denying warranty service for mods.
HTC is more picky. But AT&T is more concerned with keeping you as a monthly customer, than nitting over things like unlocked bootloaders on devices.
But if you want to be safe, go back to close to stock as timmaaa suggested.
Thanks guys, I think I'll just take it in without doing anything. I dont want to mess it up trying to change things if I don't have to. I think the consensus is that they really don't mind. When I bought the phone, the salesman was required to read out a few lines from some memorandum saying that AT&T does not recommend unlocking the bootloader/rooting/modding. I started saying I wanted a nexus because it was easier to do all that with. They were out of the nexuses, so I got the One XL.
