Facebook app poorly written for ICS, - Android General

My Phone: Samsung GNex GSM ver (ICS 4.0.2)
Facebook app is using too much background CPU resources. Caught it with Watchdog using up to 45.5% CPU running in background even after I exit the app. As a comparison, playing my Mp3s in the background using Poweramp with 'Highest Thread Priority' and '750ms' buffers only use no more then 8.7% CPU.
This is not very healthy, it's silently draining my battery juice and causing slowdown on other apps.
Does any 1 have this problem or is the software code of Facebook poorly written for Android OS especially ICS?

The Official Facebook app is indeed very poorly made.
It's a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge battery drain, and it starts even after you force close it, and it even tries starting in the background without any internet access at all.
I switched to FriendCaster, and it's at least 50 times better, especially with the completely new look in the 5.0 update that was released a few days ago.

Thanks dude, but most of my pals are in FB, kinda hard to get them to migrate to friendcaster unless i un-install that useless app and access FB directly thru my phone web browser but i won't enjoyed realtime notif and updates. *sigh*
Gonna write a feedback to FB and hopefully they can do something about it in the next update.

What are you talking about? FriendCaster is not a different social network, its a frontend for Facebook

FriendCaster is just another app for Facebook.
It can log on facebook like the official app, it can do the same things, it just looks a bit different (since it's a completely other app), and it doesn't have the huge battery drain problem that the official facebook app has.

Ops my bad... sorry, though it's another social network
Okay will give it a try.

Thanks guys for introducing me to Friendcaster.
It rocks, the UI is so much smoother and snappier that that crappy facebook app.
Gonna uninstall that piece of crap facebook app

Facebook app was draining my battery very fast, even with sync turned off. I uninstalled and and now im getting much better battery life believe it or not.

Okay now I had swich to FriendCaster, gonna monitor the battery consumption again. One thing I observed is by using Watchdog, FriendCaster only uses 10.2% CPU as compare to FB using 45.5% while in the background!! that is absurb!
Maybe that will save some juice from my battery

i'm now off to friendcaster, the new design looks really awesome!
the fb app drain is just tooo damn high..
uses about 30 % of my battery
sent from my Galaxy S running INFINITUM 1.1.0 + MNICS 143

The official facebook app is AWFUL
Friendcaster is indeed the best alternative. Been using it for a while and the 5.0 update is fantastic! The themes are a great addition

Yeah kinda lame
its slow but it still runs

eat a lot ram but works fine on xperia neo_v

When i open facebook my gps just turn on and there's no way to turn off... Now with friendcaster everything is perfect and the new ui is awesome... I love it.

Friendcaster crashes constantly for me

Yes, I was really tired of Facebook using my GPS even though I never use the check-in feature. Going to try out FriendCaster for a while ^^ thanks for the recommendation!

Just read this thread tried out friendcaster, should've done this alot sooner, tried ssesmic for a bit but didn't work out Facebook app can finally stay gone

Yeah, its been proven since long before that Friendcaster app is good than official Facebook app. Now the updated 5.0 version of FriendCaster adds more fans. But noobs always uses the official app though.
I also likes TweetCaster better, which is a good Twitter client.

Hi guys, downloaded and install Friendcaster ver 5 last night, but kinda notice that it's widget doesn't refresh on it's own... need to click the refresh button on the widget itself. Is this normal? I'm on GNex ICS 4.0.2 gsm.
Other then that Friendcaster is a PERFECT facebook subs.

Is the HD2 Twitter client useless for everyone else too?

Hi all,
I got my HD2 yesterday and so far I am very happy with it, except for a few minor details. One of the biggest annoyances so far is the Twitter client (HTC Peep). It's useless! When I try to update the latest tweets the entire phone slows down and it takes ages before they are updated. Also, scrolling up and down is extremely slow, except for most of the times when Twitter isn't updating at all.
Are everyone else having this issue as well? Are there an alternative Twitter client that works fine with the HD2?
Thanks!

Second that!
Im using it without problems, its fast..
Only auto update doesnt work...
Maybe you have conflict with any installed SW...What about to try hard reset...
Mine is useless. It takes ages to upload/update, and doesn't automatically move to the top. It looks lovely but, coming from twitterific on the iPhone, its pretty useless as it stands. Its all down to how slow it is. Is this a ROM issue?
Mine also can't "make contact with the service" most of the time. Wile pocket twit works al the time.
Same here, also when it refuses to update it slows down the phone and I have to wait for 5 minutes++ for it to go back to normal.
Does anyone know of an alternative/good Twitter client I can use instead of HTC Peep?

I couldn't recommend Panoramic MoTweets any higher. It's not free, but it's cheap.
Personally, I've not had even the slightest gripe with the twitter tab in Sense, so I'm gonna stick with that, but I used MoTweets for a long time on my HD. Give it a try.

I'm not a big twitter user, but I've had no problems with mine. Speedy and never fails to update.
I just wish it had a time limit on the notifications (no, I don't want to be notified at 3am thanks), but I think I'll end up with a generic alert management system to cover that anyway.

useless for now :S if someone deletes a tweet you already seen, the changes does not happen on hd2 when you update.
Do they actually test the software before sending it to the masses ?.. darn thing..
Hi, trying to use HTC Peed on my HD2 is near impossible. It slows right down or crashes!
I downloaed moTweets from the Marketplace a few days ago and have to say it's amazing! The interface is beautiful and the screenshots don't do it justice. It alerts you on the notifications bar when new tweets or message arrive.
Plus it has everything you need to retweet, send location, pictures, videos, view links, shorten links. I can't believe they charge under £3 for this. I've removed Peep for my bar and put moTweets on my quick links.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with the problem. Anyways, the Norwegian marketplace has 11 (!) apps. Totally useless so far.
Because my Twitter app also would'nt connect via GPRS, but did via WiFi, I contacted HTC NLD for a solution. Their reaction was that this might be a proxy problem.
So of your mobile provider uses proxy Twitter is next to useless. If not, it should work fine.
Check if this is the case by connecting your HD2 to WiFi and start twittering. If the lag or connection issues are gone you have a proxy! Check the provider settings if you're able to connect without a proxy.
Also third party twitter apps will prove to be useless because they use the same proxy. In that case the only option is to connect to internet and twitter on line.

Brilliant Twitter App. Very cheap, and rock solid. Gets updates often. . Well supported by developer and.....
Works like a charm when not connected to WiFi too.
I would have liked to use the built in twitter app, but I too can''t get it to work over a non wifi connection, I looked at removing my proxy info, but my proxy box was already unticked so made no difference to the problem.
Thankfully Twikini is supurb (and I had already purchased it previously) so I just use that. Its a much better twitter client all round.
Anyone interested in buying this App, might like to know that it is also available from the marketplace at a considerably cheaper price than direct from the developers website.
There is a free trial version, give it a go. It even comes with a HTC coloured theme so its all looks nice.

yeah it's ****ing pathetic. I thought it was going to be at least a few hundred apps there.... Been checking there once in a while since I bought the HD2, but still no new apps. Maybe we'll get 1 or two more apps next year if we are lucky woohooo!!
Few things in the world can be more useless than Twitter itself, let alone Twitter clients.
It does the Twitter thing for me but doesn't make coffee, doesn't deliver or send any significant information anywhere and doesn't wake me up in the morning. So yes, it's predictably useless.
Another good Twitter client is PockeTwit: http://code.google.com/p/pocketwit/

Bloo 1.5 W/ Facebook Chat

i just want to start off by saying that "Bloo" is one of the best app for facebook out there. the developer had decide to either let bloo die or make it open source.
please respect hes work and show support if you want "bloo" to survive.
visit hes website "fbandroid.wordpress.com" or on the market. and let him know how you feel.
By the way he has release a "Preview" of the new Bloo 1.5 With Facebook Chat. (REMEMBER IS NOT THE OFFICIAL RELEASE) everything seems to be working fine for me. but there should be some bugs.
****The only way to download this app is either by downloading "ASTRO" on the market. and download it straight from your SD Card****
**BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE NEW VERSION, PLEASE UN-INSTALL WHATEVER BLOO VERSION FROM YOUR PHONE FIRST**
This app looks freaking awesome so far. Haven't had a chance to try out facebook chat yet, but will soon...
Does Bloo allow me to accept friend requests? I always hated the fact that I couldnt do this on the stock FB app.
no it doesnt allowed to received friend request. due to "FACEBOOK" policies to third party apps. the only way to activate for you to received friend request on your mobile phone is by the "official android facebook app".
Bloo is one of the best facebook app hands down.
SHOW SUPPORT TO THE DEVELOPER

The chat seems to be working fine for me. Except sometimes if I leave the chat, get a response in the notification bar, and click it, the response isn't there. I have to back out of the chat to the "friends online" list and go back into the chat of that one person.
Kinda annoying, but otherwise the best facebook app Ive used yet.
This is not good!
Wow, who says this is better than Facebook for Android app??? This app is terrible, everything I try to do needs approval first. Then after I got it all setup its slow, you scroll down past the feeds and wait while it downloads more, scroll down, and wait.....very annoying. I gave it a try but I would rather use the Facebook for Android app, its much improved.
I like the effort though but I say let it Die!

From a developers stand point - these issues you have are Facebook API related. If Facebook would open up their API or have an "App Approval" process then it would be a lot better.
I have to say even the Facebook app blows big monkey test....well you get the point.
I guess FB didn't get the Memo that Android has now out sold iPhone and all last year was expected to do so. Maybe they should have balanced the development budget a little more in favor of Android....who ever made that business decision is probably fired now, maybe them and the guy from apple who lost the 4g can go into an Epic Fail business together.
Along these lines I just read on engadget that Erick Tseng - THE Android guy at Google - just quit over at the big G to go to work for FaceBOOK.
I see an amazing Android app in our future. I'm stooked on pure speculations here!

Um, you can set how many posts to load in the feed. It just auto loads when you get to the bottom no matter what. Facebook app doesn't even do that. All those permissions are one time things. Oh, and you want to look at a notification you received with the official facebook app? Looks like your redirecting to the browser! Might as well just use the touch site.. Bloo does EVERYTHING IN APP! Including notifications for wall posts, and other responses which the facebook app does not do. This app is not as pretty as the facebook app I will say, but def trumps it in usability
Bloo seems to be only good for telling me when there is notifications, other than that it's the stock app or mobile page for the best results. (or just viewing the full page in the browser)

Best Twitter APP **IN YOUR OPINION**

I have tried these so far
Twidroyd
Twidroyd was one of the first Android Twitter apps, and it has remained one of the best. The only complaint I’ve had is that Twidroyd isn’t as fast as it once was, but that hasn’t stopped it from being one of the most used apps. The Pro edition of Twidroyd was among the first to introduce new features like multiple accounts, themes, and media sharing, so users can count on strong features in a good interface.
Tweetcaster
The Tweetcaster interface is very pretty and the features are appealing. There are dark and light theme options, favorites, profile reading, filtering by user, and the ability to save searches. In fact, features are the saving grace of the app because it is one of the most-decorated of the comparison chart. No matter what I removed or added, Tweetcaster typically had it. I’m unable to get Twitter.com list support, but the app does let users create lists within the app. The free and pro editions are identical except that free version includes advertisements.
Plame
Full disclosure: I’m biased in my admiration for Plame. I love when apps incorporate beautiful designs, and few apps are as pretty Plame. Anyone who uses this app should opt for the Premium version, which adds theme support, color-coded multiple accounts, a widget, and threaded conversations. The great thing about Plame is that its constantly updating. The app needs to improve its speed to rival other apps, but Plame remains one of my favorites.
Great for: People who value good looks, lots of features, and constant updates
Am currently using both Tweetcaster PRO and Plume, Plume is really cool and I love the features but it is dirt slow with updating the tweets. Tweetcast PRO I just got so am still feeling it out fully but it is definitely faster then Plume in everyway...
So which twitter app would you recommend??? which do you use on a regular basis???
I always use Plume.. I've tried the others and I enjoyed Plume the best..
I use tweetcaster it seems to do what I like. I tried tweetdeck but i didn't like it at all. I am going to download plume and test it out now though
Best twitter app I've tried was seesmic, but I'm running twicca right now and its probably a tie. I tried all those others you listed and tweetdeck and they all suck.
Best cleanest and fastest I feel is seesmic, full featured is tweetcaster and twidroyd. Don't like plume at all anymore.

I haven't tried many of the other ones so I can't say. They just look "after marketish" to me tho..
I'm not a major "tweeter" I just follow a lot of the things I'm interested in and use it for updates.
I'm just coming to the conclusion that you really can't go wrong with any as there some who will go to bat for each twitter client. I for one paid for Tweetcaster and liked it and haven't tried another one since. This thread is making me want to try the others again though.
One question I do have though, which client has the best widget? That's the deal breaker for me.
Plume hands down
I hop between Plume and Twitdroyd but I use plume 90% of the time.
I've tried twitter, tweetdeck, seesmic and tweetcaster and keep coming back to tweetcaster. It's not as intuitive as some of the others, but I like the combination of appearance and features better than the others.
[edit] Ok, so I just checked out Plume, and it might become my new favorite. Thanks for the recommendation! [/edit]
I use Plume
i used plume for the longest. i loved it but i got tired of it so i am using tweetdeck now and i like this as well if i had two pick the better of the two i would say plume
Wow, I really thought Tweetdeck would be getting more love. It's by far my favorite. Plume is nice, but why not have Facebook, Buzz, and Foursquare all rolled in? The only thing I don't like about it is the widgets.
The 'Tweetdark' mod makes Tweetdeck that much better.
The official Twitter app, after one of the updates, got a lot better. But I still use Seesmic. Don't tweet much, myself, mainly for following various 'parties.' Very clean and quick. Perfect for myself.
My main gripe with Twitter apps is that none of them offer push notifications for mentions and replies; They all poll, some of them in as little as 3 minutes by default (Tweetcaster and I think Plume). I mean, polling for new tweets every THREE MINUTES BY DEFAULT?
That is absolutely insane. You can drain your battery in a few hours without even touching your phone if-- God forbid -- you forget to shut them down , or are an average user and simply don't know the effects of this on the battery.
Heck, I think even a poll of every 15 minutes is too much.
I've tried emailing them and I've gotten some responses but no changes--months later.
So personally this is my setup: Official Twitter app with no background updating, Plus Notifo Beta (Google it) and Push.ly. That way I get my mentions and replies pushed to my phone. I'm still testing it and some people say it's unrealiable, but I can always come back to regular SMS notifications.

Everything else I tried felt "aftermarketish". Except Seesmic. Clean, professional, fast and very, very functional. Used Plume for a while before I found it. Plume has now been deleted from my phone.

New Facebook for Android UI!

Hi guys!
So today I opened up my Facebook application and was graced with a beautiful new, fluid UI. I am a member of the Alpha Team, however I have rigorously tested this new interface and I cannot find any bugs with it what so ever.
Gone is the horrible sidebar that once was, the layout is extremely similar to that of the latest Twitter application, apart from the Settings are not on a three button menu.
I've uploaded some screenshots to my Dropbox, take a look here!

It's so nice update but I don't know why the FB application is still using so much from the battery

I have heard a few people moan about this in the past, but I have genuinely never had any issues with Facebook and battery. In the settings there is an option to the reduce the refresh rate to just once every four hours, I think you can even disable it completely to be honest. I have Facebook on my Note 3 though and with or without Facebook installed I pretty much get the exact same battery life.

Agreed. Ugly, and bored.
The UI work is fine. As mentioned, the wakelocks and battery use are terrible. Even when I turn off sync and notifications, Facebook causes more wakelocks than most other apps and uses a lot of data. They should address that but it seems they never will so I use the web sites.

totally agree!
It's server decided. Any issues with not seeing the new UI have nothing to do with the application. users who get the new newsfeed SHOULD get the new UI. Not definite in all cases though.
I "think" I got it
People are asking about this new UI all over the internet, and when my friend came asking why he still has the old UI on his Note 3, while I have the flat UI on my Note 2, I had to dig into it...
First of all, we both have exactly the same version of the apk from the Play store (6.0.0.28.28), I even sent him the apk from my device to be 100% sure. He logs into his account on his Note 3, gets old UI. I log into my account on his Note 3 after clearing data, I get the old UI as well (so it is not server/account related issues as mentioned before, we even have been sharing the same router at the time).
He logs into his account on my Note 2, he gets new UI. I log him out, force stop, clear all data, and log into my account, I get the OLD UI !! Weird right ?!
I looked everywhere in the settings, maybe I made a toggle or something before ... then I remembered I don't see the "Home" settings under the FB app settings. I had "Home" installed previously and then removed. So I installed "Home" and activated it. Logged into Facebook and voila, the new UI !
I logged off again, force stopped, cleared data, and removed "Home" entirely. Logged in again, same old UI. Installed "Home" one more time, activated it, logged into FB, and the new UI came up. I uninstalled "Home", logged out (didn't clear data), and logged in again, and I still got the new UI. So I am guessing it has to be related to the Facebook "Home" app, somehow it leaves a setting in FB app data to enable the new UI !
Tried doing the same on my friend's N3, but "Home" is for funny reasons isn't compatible with his device as of now. Sent him the apk and installed it, it nagged that it isn't compatible with this device, so we couldn't truly "activate" it. He still has the old UI.
I hope this casts a light on the problem of not having the new UI and helps others. I only tried it on a couple of "similar" devices, so your feedback is also appreciated
What was your exact process for setting up the home launcher? I have a sgs4 and tried this, no dice.

I seem to be having a weird issue with my S8+. Whenever I open a Facebook notification, instead of going into the already open Facebook app and refreshing to the Notification point, I get a new Facebook app instance launched (up to 3 at a time).
Also the erratic notifications are not visible in the main app, even if I refresh.
I have only one Facebook account, no third party FB apps. Just the Facebook (not Beta) app and FB Messenger app (and that works OK).
Given that the FB has burned through half my 2GB data allowance this month I'm inclined to blame some of it on the triple instance eating through resources.
I've been reading a lot on how the real FB app is a total battery hog and Data hog due to running background processes. I can't comment on your odd issue when opening FB but suggest you consider an FB alternative. I'm trying out Friendly for FB. It includes Messenger too. Seems to be way less intrusive (running in background) but I can't quote any stats for you. I am seeing better battery life now. I don't look too much at data usage since I have unlimited. Good luck!

It's because the Facebook app sucks. I would suggest turning any auto play/upload options to save data by the way.

One issue was that. Had it off on my Nexus 6P. Then forgot to turn Autoplay off on this one (and thinking that Autoplay was off by default on Cellular. It wasn't).

Yeah that was burning a lot of people when Facebook first enabled it and of course it's on by default in the app when you install it clean.
Same issue!
I'm also a Nexus 6P upgrader, and I'm experiencing the same issue! It's actually the ONLY annoyance I have with the 8+, though I was also quite fond on generic Android, so I'm working to adapt my phone settings to that experience, as much as I can...
I'll be interested to see if there's a solution to this. Currently, I'm just avoiding clicking on the notifications, or remembering to close the extra Facebook app(s) if I do.

I have at times used many alternatives like Friendly, especially with my Nexus 6P which had an awfull battery, but keep going back to FB apps. Seem more featured and polished to me.
Yeah I have this too not seen a fix yet
Same thing happening to me. Are you also getting the Facebook status bar issue where it's going wonky all the time?
I think as a workaround if you just launch FB app and go to notifications within the app you are fine. As you said if you go from a FB notification it seems to open a new FB process which is definitely not good for battery or memory.

Problem is the app doesn't show the (same) notifications I get from SystemUI. So I get different notifications from Android and different from the app. It's like they are fighting each other.
I tried disabling the Samsung preinstalled Facebook packages but the issue remains.
I seem to have resolved the issue.
First a couple of notes.
I've had the phone since May. I got the June and July updates, but issue was not resolved.
I did a full reset and issue persisted.
I did a full reset without any restores from Google or Samsung. Didn't even login to my accounts. Same thing.
So I did a full flash of the latest official ROM using Odin. In the process I used the European unbranded CSC instead of my provider's (CYV Cyta Vodafone).
Problem solved. So apparently it was something to do with that specific branch. Minor market would also explain why I seem to be the only one reporting this.
Hmmmm! I seem to have this problem. Not rooted on a G955W. Anymore clues?
I do have it as well
Same issue on note 8
I seem to have a similar issue where Facebook will have more than one instance running after a while. I can alternate between the two instances running by pushing home and then going back into the app so for instance it will be in a video where I left off and then when I push home it will go to a an instance where I am commenting on a post and then when I push home again and go back it will go back to the video. The only way to temporarily fix it is to force quit the app for me.
