[Q] Help coming from Windows Mobile to android

So i am very new to android, i did however figure out how to get root and get clockwork and flashed a custom rom. I have two questions. 1. I am currently running honeysense rom and see there is a 7.3 update, how do i go about installing the update? will doing the update erase all my apps i downloaded? If so i did back them up using titanium back up.... do i have to do wipe data, cache and all that in clockwork before installing the update?
2. If i want to do a completely new rom what are the steps to doing this as i have all this stuff on my sd card will post a pic of it curious as to what can all be deleted to free up space when starting fresh...
3. Last question sorry, i made a back up of "stock" rom before flashing the honeysense, and i named it "stock" where is that located??

Check what Android version they both are if what you have now and the update are the same Android version (2.3.4 for example) then you should be able to just wipe the Dalvic cache when flashing from ROM manager. This will keep all of your apps and settings and flash the ROM. I'm not sure what version it is, its on the download link for the rom's link I have a issue where my phone shuts off and gets stuck on the screen after the splash screen and stays there happens every two days or so and this update is suppose to fix it here is the link doesn't really say anything bout what version android it is
never mind i cant post links yet, but in honeysense forum section on here just uploaded a 7.3 suppose to fix my issue i dont think its a change in android version just a fix. If that is the case do i do apply update from sd or apply zip from sd?
2. If i do a full whipe doesn't that erase everything?? including my back ups of the roms i have backed up? never mind on that one found my answer, doesn't touch the sd card right?

You can just apply the update from SD, you can even do it with ROM manager and it's a little more straight forward. I'd just take a swing at it and hope it works, if not you always have backups you can restore.
And no, all of your backups should be on your SD card, you dont need to wipe the SD card when flashing a new rom.

ok its 312 mb so im assuming do a full wipe and reflash correct? if this is case can i copy the clockwork mod file that contains my back ups to my computer and also titaniumbackup file to my cpu do a install the rom on my phone then do a format of my sd card? and have it be blank then copy and paste clockwork mod and titaniumbackup back to my sd card and be good to go?

a full wipe does not mean wipe the SD card. you can leave that untouched

I think you misunderstood me, you DONT need to wipe your sd card, wiping data/cache wont touch your sd card, and flashing wont do anything to it either, you should be able to leave all of those files on it.

i got what your saying i just wanted to start fresh i guess you could say...with a fresh sd card and this newer build i just downloaded the file and its 312 mb so i figured i would just start back from scratch, and wondering if i can do a full wipe on the phone put the rom on my sd card flash it, i have a back up of the older version in case something goes wrong on my sd card can i take the backups copy them to my computer along with the files in titanium, after the format is done with the sd card copy and paste them back on the sd card and restore titanium files and if need be restore the previous version of the rom? so then i have all most of my free space back on the sd again. Will this all work this way?

Ok, i get what youre saying now. Yeah, there's no reason that won't work. I transfered everything from my SD to my computer and then back to another SD because i got a 32GB one. You shouldn't have any problem with that.

First Attempt at root and flash CM& - one last question

OK so I know we don't have superoneclick to root any more so I need to download CM7, install it on my sd card and flash CWM via NV flash. I also know that I need to backup before clearing data and installing cm7.
My question is after to flashing CWM via NV flash can I boot up the phone and copy my backup to my pc before clearing data and installing CM7?
I am kind of a nonrisk taker and would like to have a copy of the backup on my pc in case I screw this process up and screw up my sd card at the same time.

If you have clockwork recovery installed, do a backup. Then on your sdcard you'll have a directory called clockworkmod, and backup under there. You can copy that to your pc if you're super paranoid about messing something up. Just keep in mind when you do a restore it checks the md5 sums, so do not rename anything, and when you put it back on your sdcard, make sure the pathname is the exact same as before. (Example clockworkmod/backup/12.31.2121blahblah.

Thanks, I think I got the copying part, but what I am asking is whether its ok to power up the phone after flashing CWM via NV flash and creating a backup but before installing CM7? Please tell me if this is a dumb question. I'm a lawyer, I'm used to being told I ask dumb questions.

Of course. CWM sits on a partition that's normally used for the reset to stock recovery. After you install it, and do a backup, your rom is still there. You can boot to it like normal, copy stuff to the computer, and then reboot again into recovery to install cm7.

First Android device, need some help

Hello people of xda-developers
I got my first Android phone, which is an LG G2X 2.3.3 Gingerbread.
I have been searching around and found out you can root your phone which is kinda like jailbreaking an iphone.
I still don't completely understand how to do it though. I've seen a couple of threads that tell you how to root your Android device with something called SuperOneClick, but from what I understand, this doesn't work with the new Gingerbread.
Now from what I understand, you first have to root your phone, then flash it with CWM Recovery with NVFlash right?
Could someone please lead me to the threads that explain how to root a G2X with Gingerbread, and how to flash it with CWM Recovery.

although someone did post a way to root the gingerbread rom its pretty complicated for a new user.
the oneclick methods of rooting for the 2.3.3 dont exist.
if you want to be able to flash custom roms(which you do) than follow this link and it will walk you through what to do.

that will get you where you need to be. but it will not root the rom you are currently using youll need to flash a custom rom for that. in the development section youll see several roms either from source. or that are based on the 2.3.3 release and xboarders is the 2.3.3 with root only thats the only change.

Okay I flashed CWM via NVFlash. Now I have a question. How can I backup my apps before flashing a rom. I tried to use Titanium Backup, but that doesn't work because my phone isn't rooted. If I boot into Recovery, do I have to wipe data before I install for ex. CM7 onto my phone? But wouldn't wiping the data delete all of my apps?

Yes wipe everything. Here's a step-by-step method of flashing new roms:
1. Wipe Data/Factory
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe Dalvik
4. Wipe Battery stats - HINT. Always flash new ROMs with 100% battery to get the best battery life
5. Format/system
6. install zip from SD card
7. Fix permissions
8. Reboot and Enjoy!
All your paid apps will come again when you login to your Google account and set up your market. In Market, just press the menu button and hit My Apps and you should be able to re-install all your paid apps.

If you have Clockworkmod successfully flashed then you CAN now root without flashing another rom. Download the zip (theres one that roots, and one that unroots should you ever want that) file from the OP of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214. Save it to your sdcard, boot into recovery and select to install zip from sdcard. Navigate to the zip file and install/flash it. Reboot and you have rooted your system with all your files and apps in place.

I did this. My phone is now rooted, but I ran into a problem. I tried flashing CM7 through ROM manager, I cleared cache and Dalvik and then flashed the CM7 Rom, but when I go to reboot, the phone freezes at the "T-Mobile G2X with Google" animation.

Try it without rom manager. Power your phone off and then boot into recovery by holding power + volume down until you see the recovery splash screen. Do a full wipe and then flash cm7 again. After successfully installing cm7, or any rom for that matter, your first reboot may take several minutes while it builds the dalvik cache. Subsequent reboots will be MUCH faster.

Ah okay, I didn't know the first reboot takes longer. I'll give it a try from CWM Recovery.
Just wondering, which ROM is the most stable/popular?

Popular? Its really about personal preference but I'd say cm7, xboarders stock tweaked, miui, weapon, and eaglesblood are right up there at the top. If you want a more stock experience go with xboarders. Cm7 is fairly stock looking with a lot of useful features added. Miui is the opposite end of the spectrum, a very different kind of android indeed lol.
As for stable, any of the ones I mentioned are good, and probably others as well. Cm7 nightly builds are certainly useful enough to be a daily driver, but they have a few issues, but what else would you expect from nightly builds. They are development versions, not final releases.
Try a few and find what you like. Just make sure to keep a good working backup in case you fubar your phone lol.

Alright I got CM7 working and flashed google apps.
Now I have another little problem Before I flashed CM7, I used Titanium Backup to backup some of my game apps. After I flashed CM7, I go to Titanium Backup and none of my apps are there to restore. I connected my phone to my computer and I opened the Titanium Backup folder and the zip files and the PROPERTIES files are all there. How come I'm not able to restore my apps using Titanium Backup if all of the files are there?
I have the .apk files for the apps and I can just install them again, but I'm going to lose my save data.

I have never had success with Titanium Backup. Just reinstall your apks clean and forget about the old data. A clean install is better. Think about doing a new Windows installation. Do you want to import the crap that messed up your Windows in the first place? Android is the same way. Better to not import your old data and start new.

Wait no! Don't do that you can salvage ur save data.
What happens when you install CM7 is that the sdcard directory now points to your external sd card rather then the internal that comes with the phone.
the internal is now at /mnt/emmc
Get root explorer and you will see what I'm talking about.
Once you have root explorer just copy the titanium backup folder from /mnt/emmc to /sdcard and you should be able to restore all user apps with data... however DO NOT restore system data from stock to CM7... big headaches.

Too late, lol.
I deleted the Titanum Backup folder from my phone.
Oh well, nothing GameCIH can't solve.

Titanium backup goes to you internal sdcard. so you connect to you computer find the folder named TitaniumBackup or something like that, then move that folder to your sd card. Its just a matter of keeping same folder structure that titanium looks for (ie the correct folder name), and puttin the files in there, on the correct external sd card

oh also most of the time replacing the app doesn't work, just replace the data and it will work (unless of course you are actually trying to change the app in that case good luck).

[Q] about nonandriod and cwm backup question

i have read many before i post here. but i am noob and with a bad understanding brain.
my question is what is the nonandriod or cwm full backup and restore used to? fror example, after i backup, i flash my Phone from ucla3 to ics roms. then if i want to come back to the stock rom before flash. i need to find a stock romto reflash with odin or i can just do that with nonandriodrestore. the full restore for everying or just build , what about base and kenal? if i need reflash stock rom with odin anyway , why it is recommend full backup before flash. please give me an example to explain. thanks in advance

Nandrorid is like a snapshot of your phone's operating system state. Restoring a nandroid gives you a return to the way you booted and ran your phone's android version at the time of back up.
Not included are the modem or radio and the recovery image (like CWM or stock 3e). Those you can flash separately to change. User data held in phone storage after the backup must be saved offline (externally) before restoring. For me it means latest call logs, contacts and sms.
The nandroid restore wipes phone storage and recreates the standing configuration you backed up, like reimaging a raw PC hard drive Partitions, file systems, boot resources and data are all (re)applied in the process.

you means if i use custom sky ics now and i do a nandrorid restore, i can not go back to GB 2.36??(if i have done a nandrorid backup for 2.36 before i install the sky ics??)

You can but you'll need to flash the la3 radio first.

[Q] How does a custom recovery works?

Ok, so i'm new to all this stuff about custom recoverys and ROMs. How exactly do they work?
Let's say i make a custom recovery image of my current ROM, wich is stock, does it just backup the OS or my personal files (music, photos, apps, etc.) too?
I'm asking this primarly because i want to upgrade my phone, but to do so i have to flash the stock firmware because i've modified some system files. Wich bring to my other question, flashing ROMs wipe user data? i've read some split responses to this, some people say it does some say it doesn't.
And my final question, let's say i made a backup, wiped my phone flashed stock firmware and updated, now how i recover my data from the
backed up ROM, i mean it is a different version, does it have an option to just restore user data?

it'll back up system, data, boot.img and dalvik cache.
your sd partition isn't backed up, but all the stuff on it will be readable by whatever new rom you put on it (unless you wipe EVERYTHING [not a good idea]).
when you're changing roms/etc, you want to place the rom.zip + gapps.zip (and custom kernel.zip if you're going to use one) on your sd partition. you do this because usb storage mostly doesn't work with custom recoveries as of yet on this device meaning once you've wiped, if you don't have a rom on your sd partition you're mildly screwed in that you'd have to reflash everything from a stock image (meaning you will lose root, all your personal files and whatever rom was on the phone - basically everything goes back to stock bar the bootloader).
e: as for restoring all apps data, use something like titanium backup. i always have a backup on my sd partition of all my current apps (plus wifi passwords, accounts info, sms messages etc to save time/effort when restoring after putting a new rom on). i also always set TB to backup all modified/new data every night at about 3am, then upload the backup to google drive so that if i either brick my phone or accidentally wipe everything, at least i can get back to where i left off.

If you forget to place the ROM zip, and have formatted the device, it is not necessary to flash stock. You use adb side load which is present in every recovery.

in that case i need to remember that for future use - i hardly ever use my pc with my phone now as you can pretty much do anything (update recovery etc) on the phone alone.
that, and i'm on windows 8.1 which afaik doesn't play nicely with fastboot or adb.
