broken power button, will warranty cover it? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my power button has been broken for a week now, I know its hardware because it can't be fixed by flashing a new Tom and everytime I insert the battery the phone boots on its own. Ive been paying 8 bucks a month for insurance on my phone and was wondering if sprint would give me a new one for 35$ which is what a friend of mine said they would do

i don't know if sprint will replace it but samsung will fix it for free. That happened to me about a month ago.

If its still under warranty, Samsung should fix it.

My thunderbolt experience

April 28th I used my upgrade for this phone. It was great up until that first "update", then it was 5-10 reboots daily.
Since then I'm on my 3rd thunderbolt. I've had a store rep lie to me saying I needed to go back to the place I bought it at to get a replacement phone, same rep voided the warranty after they transfered service back to my D1. Then Verizon tried to charge me the $570 fee for not sending back my 2nd thunderbolt.
After all this hassle & frustration the local manager gives me a free extended battery. Almost worth the $310 to buy out my contract if this is what the future looks like.

Did you buy your phone from an authorized retailer or a Verizon company store? Lots of times, authorized retailers are only worried about a sale and not customer service.
I've also heard great things about Best Buy Mobile.

I'm on my launch day TB, Never had a reboot, shut down, or problem rooting, flashing any rom, theme, font or sim failure. I am however in a Non 4g area.
Knock on wood.

My wife and I both had our phones replaced. Mine is not as bad as hers but she can't hit the home button with out the phone freezing or loosing the touch functionality. Anyone know if its possible to swap for a different phone?

I did buy it from a authorized retailer. Thing that frustrates me to no end is the customer service or better yet the lack of it. To have a rep knowingly activate my old phone thus voiding my warranty is beyond inexcusable.
Then the whole trying to charge me $570 for a device that I did send back, its almost like they want me to cancel my contract. I mean do I have to take a manager with me to fed ex to ship my old broken phone so they don't make the same mistake?
Maybe its too much to ask for that I get a working phone that I paid good money for & god forbid anything happens to it that they will try to help. Sorry that my phone broke & you have to spend 5 min helping me order a refurb. Perhaps if I tipped the rep then maybe they could help me even though its not a sale.
I had a crapload of problems after the MR1 OTA, including random reboots, overheating, crappy GPS, you name it. Instead of trying for a replacement, I re-flashed the full MR1 zip from my SD card, and all of my problems went away even when using MR1. MR2 made everything even better, although I'm no longer running a stock install.
My question is, have you guys tried re-flashing with the full RUU? It seems like a lot of the problems could be the result of a bad flash/faulty upgrade.
Great news! Now this phone is starting to reboot. Maybe its just time to root so my $300 phone will work

Warrant exchange?

So whats going on now with T-mobile if we try to do a warranty exchange?
I had a hd2 and it had issues and they sent me a g2x about 7-8 months ago but now it seems alot of the issues that have been reported "that I didn't have I have now" I just don't want a refub g2x my screen looks good and I don't want a refub with screen bleeds.lol
Im sure somebody has dealt with Tmobile on this just wondering what the outcome was.

I may be wrong, but if you receive a warranty replacement for a phone the remaining warranty is carried over from the original date of purchase of the first phone. If it is still in the warranty period of the hd2 you should be fine.
Na its been over a year since I bought the hd2.The right thing for them to do is give me a year on the g2x "but the wont" cause they gave it to me and I didn't know about all the issues it has and they was like your lucky this is one of our hottest phones lol
Has any one used asurion are the replacing g2x's with g2x's?
I have gotten two warranty exchanges on my G2x and the first on I received seemed to be a new G2x with LG logo instead of T-Mobile logo under the ear piece, by the second one I received was a refurb an the way I could tell was that after a week of using it I started having a bad screen bleed... When I called T-Mobile and asked for a replacement phone, basically I didn't want the G2x anymore, they told me that I would either get another G2x or the Sidekick 4G... I just decided to order another screen off eBay and replace it myself..... Asurion will exchange you phone for you but there is a $130 deductible that you have to pay if you decide to use your insurance to get your phone exchanged

The side kick 4g? lol that's probable what asurion will send.
When a phone is discontinued there sapose to offer a better phone.
Has anyone else got a sidekick from asurion

One Year Manufacturer Warranty Question

I recently got a gs3 from a friend..so I did not buy through verizon or update my contract. With every single old phone ive had if i had any problem that was not due to dropping or getting wet i would call and the phone would be replaced through a one year manufacturer warranty. Is this still the same with the s3 and does it matter that i did not purchase it through verizon? i know i cant get insurance since i didnt purchase it through them but isnt it still covered from the manufacturer warranty? again i always got phones replaced for free if there was something wrong from the manufacturer.. as long as the phone had no signs of being dropped or abuse
I purchased my phone on another friends account, so I wouldn't loose unlimited data and was told by Verizon that it's fully covererd for 2 years. 1 year from Samsung and 1 year since I pay for the insurance. Hopefully I wasn't lied to!
My friend has bought a couple phones via craigslist and was able to put insurance on em. And yes you are still covered via the manufacturers warranty, atleast my friend was.

Question about Asurion replacement

So recently my S3's power button broke and I don't have insurance. My dad has Asurion and we were thinking if we could switch phones, and send my broken phone in. He has a S3 as well. So basically I take his phone and he takes mine and sends in the broken one. Is this possible? Do they look at serial numbers on the phones or anything? I don't mind paying any deductible that he has, but I just need a functioning phone.

You can try it, but i think it's a bad idea. It's essentially insurance fraud, and even though Asurion probably wouldn't be able to find out they would charge you the full price of the phone if they did find out.
You're better off contacting samsung for a manufacturers warranty if your phone is less than a year old, or get it fixed through mobile tech videos for a reasonable price.

@tu3218 how old is your phone? If it's less than a year old just take it back the store it's a known defect.

I don't think they can check. I just had my S3 replaced. For some reason, Verizon has my S3 listed under my mom's name. No big deal. However, be wary of any device you get from them. As I said, I just had mine replaced. The refurbed device they sent me has had a number of issues. I had to take it to Verizon and ask for a brand new one. So before you root, take a day or two to scout out any issues.

Thanks guys. Yeah my phone is more than a year old so no verizon for me or Samsung. I'll check out Mobile Tech Videos. This is so frustrating cause I've kept my S3 is such good condition, never dropped it or anything. But I get stuck with defective hardware because of piss poor design by Samsung. Sorry, just going back to grad school in a couple weeks and don't need this right now.

[Q] Anyone have insurance through verizon on their S3?

My charge port on my S3 is going to crap. I have insurance on my phone though and thinking about getting a new one. Has anyone got a new phone through Verizon insurance? How much did you have to pay? Was it new of a refurb? Thanks

If the phone is under a year old Verizon should just replace it without going through insurance. They most certainly send you a certified-like-new device. If the process is handled by Verizon it will either be free or like $3 for overnight shipping.

If your phone is more than a year old, you will have to go through the insurance. It will cost $99 and you get a brand new phone not a refurb.
If you have the complete verizon insurance package you dont need to go through insurance they will replace it for you, they did the same for mine when it wouldnt turn out
From what I was told you have to pay $90
As long as you paid for insurance. Which is 10 a month for two years or $100 up front which covers the two years
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
If you have insurance through Verizon Wireless (not some authorized seller of Verizon products) it is handled by Asurion, a third party insurance provider. If you need insurance replacement (lost, stolen, or damaged phone) it is $99 dollars. The phone you get from Asurion will most likely be refurbished but occasionally they do send new ones depending on stock.
If the port has stopped working because of a manufacturer defect with the device and not because it was damaged somehow, then you have to go through Verizon. If it's under warranty (been less than a year since you purchased the device) or if it's been more than a year and you have an extended warranty the device will be replaced at no charge through Verizon
If it's a manufacturer's defect the insurance company won't replace it. It has to be covered by warranty.
