Hey guys,
I have a full upgrade coming on Tuesday (7-5) and have been doing a lot of research on what phone I want. I have it narrowed to the SK4g and waiting a little longer for the mt4g slide.
My burning question is does anyone know the status of porting CyanogenMod to the Sidekick?
If there were any progress on that, it would make it a no brainer since the combo of the physical keyboard, basic internal hardware stats, and the right price + CM7 would make it a near perfect for me phone.
I have asked on the CM forums, and googled it but cannot find an answer. I know bburke has mentioned it so I figured to ask here and see.
Thanks in Advance!

Well to answer your question wolfepakt, Its a work in progress. Its been less than a month since we were gifted CWM(amazing work Krylon360!), and the "Smooth Maximus" rom serious (Major thanks to AyoTeddy!). With what little knowledge i know of about CM7, I believe there needs to be a gingerbread leak for our device or a device closely related (epic 4g i think is the closest). But what we really need is a couple more devs to work on it. Ayoteddy (smooth maximus), Dr.Honk(Bali Kernal's) and Krylon360 (CWM) can only do so much on their own. If you know of some devs that would help us port it, our phone could see the gingery goodness!
Did some more looking on CM wiki and found one small tidbit at the very bottom of this page:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_FAQ
There is no maintainer but the sk is not to far from the galaxy S line.

Its close as far as hardware is concerned, but I'd like to ask you to look at the clock work mod thread so you can see the real differences.
Will do. Have been reading a lot in the last week or two!
There are tons of useful pages, some of which should be stickies but aren't. If you need anything just ask brother.
p.s. If you look at the phones i have posted in my signature, My current setup blows them all away. Ayoteddy and Dr.Honk did a magnificent piece of work with the smooth maximus rom.
Good deal!
I don't change my phone every three months like some people, so I want something that I will be happy with for a long time.
I had my Dash for almost two years, have had the highlight for over a year.
Have has good luck with both Samsung and HTC!

I am trying to work on getting a cm7 port, but not much progress so far. If you like having tons of ROM choices, id go with the mt4g slide, but nonetheless, the sk4g is a good phone.

There are two things making me want to go SK:
1. The price is reasonable,
2, The keyboard is bigger (5 row, looks more 'bigger hand" friendly)
4g slide has the dual core processor, more ram, etc.
I really don't care about the camera!
Either one will get a 16 gig sd card, so that doesn't really matter to me.
(I wanted a g2, but tmo sent it to a premature grave!)
All that being said I will most likely go with the SK, but I am gonna wait till the slide comes out and call Tmo Loyalty and see what they can do for me!
i have a G2 and the SK4G, and at first, when we had only stock for the SK4G, i preferred my G2, as the development for the device is truly amazing. but now, with the Smooth Maximus ROM and Bali kernel, I've been using my Sidekick. CM7 or AOSP would be amazing, but to me, we have it good already! i think Samsung knocked it out of the park with the physical design, and yeah, the keyboard is awesome, best i have ever used on a smartphone. i think i could use this phone for a long time myself.

Great info yogi!
Doing more research tells me that the diffs between froyo and gingerbread are nice but a lot of it is similar in the bali kernel on smX. I still am leaning to SK and getting more convinced each day. I wish I had the time to devote to learning the info to build kernels so I could help DEV and work on OC kernels etc. I have used Linux for years, but between working 40+ a week and a family that we Homeschool, time for stuff like that is on the low side!
I never got into having the top of the line tech as it outdated to quickly to justify the price! However as a geek by nature, I frequently drool over TOTL!
I have downloaded the kernel source from samsung and will dig into it tonight at work! (Love OT!!!) I hope that it is well commented!

let me know how it goes with the kernel. I have been trying to build it for practice.... the Bali kernel seemed to build easily for me, but I am a bit stuck on the stock kernel for some reason.

I'm slowly working on porting CM7/AOSP 2.3, just getting around to some more work on it, but currently have to completely rebuild, as GB requires a different init.rc haha. I've built both the bali kernel and the stock kernel, so if you have some questions yogi, I can possiblly help you out, just pm me or find me, you know where I hang out.
hey sduvick have you made any progress?
I'd drop a <Donate Monetarily> to this cause, as I have for WiFi-Tether, Bugless beast, and Cyanogen in the past...
The default double lock screen is a major hindrance for daily use with stock and the only viable alternative right now.
Hey guys.
I'm trying to gauge interest here as to what roms you're all most interested in so I can start getting in touch with some devs to see if I can talk them into porting.
What would be nice from all of us:
-Make a pledge to throw a few $ down. Doesn't have to be much, but anything you can spare will encourage devs to come on over.
-PATIENCE. Especially if the dev doing the port doesn't actually own an MT4GS, there's going to be a lot of back and forth between them and whoever is playing intermediary (I am more than happy to take this role, and of course any one else who wants to play guinea pig should let the dev know as well). XDA devs have other obligations in their lives and it's important to remember that before getting on their butts for taking a long time on updates, etc.
Let me know if there are any specific ROMs you'd like to see added to the poll. For now, I'm keeping it simple and broad, since a lot of specific roms are just different flavors of a base rom.
Poll is up. If you are someone who would be willing to donate to the effort, please state the amount so we can give devs something to get excited about!
I'm in for $20 to the first person who ports a custom rom to the MT4GS.
$10 for the first person who ports an AOSP rom or Cyanogenmod.
(that's $30 if the first rom ported is AOSP/CM. )
Let's get some excitement brewing!!! XDA has excellent developers, why not entice them to employ their knowledge and skills to make our experience with the MT4GS the best it can be?
Something like virtuous rom

Cyanogenmod is a basic, bare-bones version of android with some customizations:
http://cyanogenmod.com/
MIUI is an iphone-ish looking UI that runs really smooth and fast and a lot of people love it:
http://miuiandroid.com/
Virtuous Unity is my personal favorite and is a simplified version of sense 3.0 (what we have on the phone right now) with a customizable lockscreen and some other options that would make this phone WAY better:
http://www.virtuousrom.com/p/unity_23.html
The 2.1/3.0 hybrid is a little older version of sense with some tidbits added in from sense 3.0. Probably wouldn't make much "sense" on this phone (pun intended) since we have dual-core processors and already run sense 3.0 on the stock ROM...
Thanks unclespoon.
Given that summary, it looks like Virtuous is gonna be our best ROM if we wanna hold onto the camera app that came with the phone.
Honestly, I don't know much about it as my experiences in this department are limited to flavors of CM7, coming from the Nook Color as my first and only other android device.
I know when Cyanogenmod eventually gets ported to this device I'll be giving it a go and I registered over at CM forums to keep up with it.
I'm running low on play money with all I've put towards this device so far, but i'd be happy to toss a few bucks towards CM, and if Virtuous is what it seems it'll be like then them as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143177
You're right, it's the best solution for this phone, especially if we want to maintain the camera app. People can run ADW launcher or launcher pro if they want it to look and feel like AOSP, and with overclocking on this device it will run as fast as anyone could ever want it to.
Thanks for that - I was using the XDA premium app to respond while I was out, and somehow lost the last paragraph of what I said asking for the link and stating I was out testing gps stuff on the phone.
It's kinda hard using it sometimes, because it doesn't let me see what i'm responding to like typing on a real computer does while i'm working with a thread, but it's still far and away better then using the browsers on the phone to go through forums.
ICS has also now been ported and boots up on the Droid 3 lol. Great work to Hashcode for getting it going!
http://hash-of-codes.blogspot.com/2011/11/you-got-your-ice-cream-on-my-droid-3-no.html
Well, it is a 3G phone, so there shouldn't be issues getting the radios working. I do find it amusing the type of the support these cheesy phones get though.
I don't want to get off topic, but I am curious what sort of CIQ and other potential spyware has been implemented in ICS. It seems a good opportunity for Google to embed CIQ deep within the framework, but alas, who knows.
The main two features of ICS that I think I would like, but don't need, is USB OTG and WiFi Direct.

You already know. Yes, we are eager for ICS/CM7.1/CM7.2/CM9...and everything under the sun that a working RIL would enable us. But, having said that, I think the vast majority of us place FUNCTION in front of FEATURES.
We, Android enthusists with the skills to flash but not actually dev, are like children and will never be satisfied. We need a healthy meal, but are going to whine to have candy for dinner every night. As a dev, you're more similar to our parent in this metaphor... Don't take it personally when we metaphorically say we hate you--we don't. We love you. We need your help to eat at all, so make sure it's the best meal you can provide.
Besides, if the RIL never comes, who bought this phone for Ice Cream Sandwich anyway? I bought this phone for 4G.

imnuts, please don't take my post or the title the wrong way. I am in now way at all saying anything bad about what you do for this phone. Your work is very highly regarded in my book. I was just pointing out how crazy it is with all these ICS ports coming out now. I can promise you that I am grateful for all the work you do for us.
If you want an AOSP ROM, you shouldn't buy a Samsung phone.
Twice bitten for me. Neither of my Samsung phones has had an AOSP ROM.
As a self-proclaimed nube, I am generally curious what advantages we would see on AOSP anyways.
Is there some super-spiffy amazing bad-ass feature that I don't know about?
Humble 5.0 is great for me. I will try Infinity if/when its ready.
ICS in particular has WiFi Direct and USB OTG as I mentioned above, which I assume that CM7 wouldn't enable.

AOSP tends to offer a faster experience, and better battery life. It does this by not having any carrier or OEM bloat anywhere. There is a lot of stuff added on to the stock ROM that cannot be removed. To give you an idea, a heavily debloated TW ROM for the Fascinate is usually ~160MB, give or take, where as a stock AOSP ROM is <100MB for the same Android version, GB in this case. That would mean that even the best debloated/cleaned up TouchWiz ROM is still going to have about 40% more useless junk in it than a stock AOSP ROM, and that junk slows down the system and drains the battery.

Bionic got ICS support because Kejar has a Bionic probably. I'm just glad we are on the eve of GB finally and that Imnuts and Imoseyon can get to business with some code.
Over the years around computers I've learned one thing, the next OS is always easier to use, easier to program in and what not, but it is always more complex and requires more hardware, more RAM and shortly after release the end user experience isn't all that much better than it was 6 months earlier. You should see DOS 5 run on a quad core monster processor - wow!

I agree with what you're saying mostly, but your post almost sounds like you expect Imnuts and Imoseyon to develop and post their work when they have zero obligation to develop and/or share any of their work in any way. If I wasn't so hard-pressed for cash, I would donate more to the devs. I will when I am able though.
One should also remember the short life cycle of smartphones. I am already looking forward to the Galaxy S III mostly for the display- SAMOLED III.
Also, I would like to be able to watch 480p Flash content in the browser without having to overclock, hopefully 720p Flash in the browser with the GS3.
Of course I would like my Charge to blaze along at its maximum potential, but there is a thin line between spending and wasting time on dated hardware. If you want the the best experience on a device, then it would be best to buy older hardware that it well-developed, like the Fascinate. I am willing to sacrifice for the perks of the Charge, like the SAMOLED+ display and 4G.
Hi everybody!
Maybe I can seem really annoying but, since we're waiting for kernel 3, cannot devs focus on CM7 or miui in order to let camera record videos?
I think it is a good idea and it won't oblige anybody to upgrade to ics if they simply dont want! (for example I dont like the "speed" of ics and prefer gb actually)
I hope this tread will mean something for someone

That's a nice thought there. CM9 still has a lot of bugs in it and there is still a lot of work to be done. The ICS roms need kernel 3.x as you know and hillbeast is doing great. It I have been following the kernel 3.x development thread and it seems that hillbeast would have a the device booting soon. For devs like dhiru it would be too tedious to work on CM7 as he is already working on CM9 and the kernel. CM9 is pretty smooth and the camera occasionally force closes.
Yes I do agree with you when you say users should not be pushed to use ICS. Hope cm7 finds devs working on the camera.
CM9 is the future.. It will take the same effort to fix bugs on CM7 as on CM9..
Asking a dev to work on CM7 with CM9 development at its current state is pretty unnecessary, and I don't think any dev would even be interested. Why would anybody work on something that's supposed to be fizzing out..
As dhiru said, working on CM7 is double works for him.He is also busy with his life now.And yes,who don't want a fully complete rom? But developers are human like we too.You cannot say that now they are waiting for kernel 3.0,therefore they have time now. No, they need to spend time to their friends, family, their study etc..Lastly, the most important is they work for the community with no salary. We should appreciate their work rather than keep demand to them.

so you think that once kernel 3.0 will be out, they don't have any kind of "life"?
i said that, it's a good choice to complete cm7 and this period of "tranquillity" is the best one, since it's "freer" than once kernel out.

getting a fully stable aosp rom is like a dream which will never come true for us. I know I am saying in a very negative way but its a fact guys that we have very few developers who also want some help from other top developers of other community who are damn busy with their development & they even dont know that a phone whose name is "galaxy SL" exist in mobile world. My friends also said me many times that they know galaxy s, s2, s3, ace & many more phones but they haven't heared anything about galaxy SL phone.
Its all about plenty of developers needed for good development which we are lacing from 1st day of release of this phone. I am emotinally attached with this phone & our community members, developers & thats why I use my phone with full of interest Otherwise I would have sold it so many days ago.
Regarding cm7, cm9, miui or any aosp rom I will only say this much that if any develoer will make hd video recording working then just within a week we will get official cm7, cm9...etc. But in my opinion it will never happen. We have to always live with a phone having good aosp rom but with lots bugs....ALWAYS...!
Agree with the essence of this topic.
We, i9003 users, don't have a custom ROM, that is bugfree.
I am willing to donate to whoever would spend time and effort to make "video recording" work on a custom ROM. Again, I'm not a developer and am not sure if this is even possible. I used to be a good c and java programmer about 12 years ago, but haven't been coding since then.
On the other hand, I'm also willing to wait for kernel 3 and make sure we have the latest stuff for our phones.
JMHO
I honestly think OP is right. We need to have a Rom that is bugfree. That way, many people won't feel bad going back to those stock ROMs which are nothing but a headache being slow and awful to work with and to look at. Most people just want a bugfree AOSP ROM.
On another note, it will be a pain for the devs (Dhiru), who promised us CM9. Nobody wants to do those things which they weren't supposed to. It will also be a pain for the community to donate a device to another dev. Seeing the chance of the Sense 4.0 donation request from many people, i don't think there are so many people in this community who can make it up for donating 2 phones in really short intervals, or at similar time.
And for the blow, Jellybean 4.1 is gonna be here anytime. SDK (And Sources too, i think) will be released today (Remember, first CM9 started with SDK builds), and update will be pushed to phones such as Nexus and Galaxy S3 in Mid July. So now, should the devs should still concentrate on fixing GB bugs? Or should the fix the CM9 bugs first? Or should they start porting Jellybean?
Just my POV.
I guess pushing for jellybean would be pushing too far(unless a dev dares to differ). I'll be content with a bugfree ICS ROM.

I kinda agree with OP, but not only hllbeast is working on kernel 3.x, dhiru and crack(-can't remember) are working on it too, so they're not "free".

Sorry for my negative thinking but I have seen development of this device from very start & I am pretty disappointed with it. Anyway if I become wrong in future & if my dream come true then I'll be the most happiest person on earth

I think it will come true, the number of developers increased, that can be only good

CM7 bugs could be a very little one... But if no developer does anything we cannot do anything.
Gb is very very very good for our phone and without 3.0 ics is pretty unstable...
If developers can do CM7 why spend time with ics that needs 3.0?
First finish CM7 then, once kernel out, ics!

Developers here, do this development for the sheer excitement of it, not for money.
I can see people are very excited about CM9 and ICS. Developers are people too, and do what excites them or what feels like a challenge.
It's quite similar to what happens when you get a new phone. I had a nokia E63, which i used to love and did use/try every feature/app for that phone. But, I rarely do anything except make phone calls from that device now. All my excitement is for my first android 9003.
Just an analogy to explain why excitement has died. Hope it makes sense.
Would it be possible to port a JB rom for the nexus s to the Samsung Infuse 4G? I'm new to all the development stuff, all though I have been flashing roms and such to many devices for a while. I understand most of the simple development stuff, but I know hardly, if anything, about porting roms to other devices. I don't think it would be possible, seeing as they are two completely different devices, but anything is possible. Just doesn't mean its very probable. So go easy on me.

You'd be better off asking the Infuse devs, I doubt any NS dev is going to be able to do anything to help you since they don't have the device to work on. The hardware is pretty similar so it could be doable but you're definitely going about it the wrong way.

it is probably possible but you are likely to run into numerous errors, that is if you even get it to boot !
we just recently got jelly bean a few days ago and it is still improving so using that as base would likely result in a very unstable port.. but you are welcome to give it a try and see how it goes. the worst that can happen is having to go back to stock
if you happen to have a capable PC, you might want to try building your own rom from source! it should be a great learning experience and is much more likely to work compared to a port

not sure about porting but there is a working JB rom on the Dev section
galaxy s line
i believe you'd actually be closer by using the CM10 for the fascinate that just landed yesterday, but i digress. the JB CM10 in the dev section is working better than CM9 for me.
I would definitely like to learn how to build a rom from source. But isn't there a lot of coding involved in that process? If there is, I would have to learn all that as I go. And I'm also going to check the development section right now, as soon as I post this reply. Seeing as I have a Nexus S and not an Infuse(my girlfriend does), I don't check this forum that often. Thank you all for the replies.
There are a few guides around that tell you how to set up the building environment on your PC, and how to sync repos and build for your device.
The complicated part might be fixing errors in your build , but thats how we all learn
