SIP over 3g/4g rom project - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

So I came from the captivate to the skyrocket about a week ago, and am surprised by the development (or lack thereof) for this great piece of hardware. So I decided to foray into rom development, I set up a build environment and am ready to start on a SIP enabled rom, but i need to know which base people are more interested in having this feature on. Rogers UXKJ2 or either AT&T release, it all depends on what more people want, and with CIQ being baked into the ATT releases I would probably rather develop on a Rogers base, but i would need an image of the base, either zipped up or as a nandroid image as I only have access to the ATT images.

what is SIP?
I thought groove IP+google voice worked

I planned on enabling gingerbreads native SIP so 3rd party apps werent required. I actually meant to ask for a KJ7 nandroid or stock rom image to base off of, but it seems boneSTOCKeteer is exactly what i'm looking for.

Rodgers , at&t don't matter just would love to see it happen

I think you can flash rogers's radio and it will allow you to enable 3G or 4G. But i m not 100% sure if it will work i heard it over at irc when i was testing tpc's radios.

Sip is session initiated protocol. Basically ability to carry voice packets over internet and through computer systems versus traditional telephone systems. Voip is a simple way to describe it. Vo in voip stands for voice over and IP stands for internet protocol. So voice over internet protocol.

any luck with this. I am trying to add the support to my ROM
Ive tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109962
I dont even see the Internet call settings menu
Is there an /system/app thats needed that the skyrocket is missing?

I used the same method, and was never able to get that setting to show up. While it works, I've always had to use a third party sip client like csip. I know it's possible to have show up cause if im not mistaken one of the devs here got it working, you might want to find out who and ask them.

u being one of em, ehh? lol

Its phone.apk.
Maybe someone can help find it
Old Phone apk works, but lacks the new UCLA3 Look feel and whatever else ATT changed
New(no sip settings in settings>>call)
both

That was back in the day of there only being a few touch wiz roms, coming from the captivate I was used to there being cm7, miui, ics and too many roms to shake a stick at. Never said there were no good devs, just not as many. I appreciate all the work you guys put into this phone, I know how time consuming it can be.

Best ICS ROM?

Hi all.. I couldnt post this in the Dev section bec I'm a noooob, but I hope this is the second best place... apologies if it isnt.
I am not sure when ICS is coming out exactly, but I already have my i727 Skyrocket easy rooted, and now looking to install this ROM: Sky Ice Cream Sandwich (2.3.6) from rootzwiki, and was wondering if this is the best one to install with ICS... really seems like the only one from my searches, but there arent many actual tested comments on it for some reason.
Also, do all these ROMs that have "tethering" mean you still have to pay ATT for the additional data fees, or are there ROMs that work around that as well? I wouldnt even be using it that often, but when I do need it, a nice 20mpbs wifi freedom would be very useful without having to worry about going over some data limit.
Thanks!

first of all, this doesnt belong in dev section, because you arent developing anything. its a question, it belongs right where it is.
secondly, why dont you just go into our dev section and read about sky ice cream sandwich there? no need to go to rootz.
also, it isnt really ICS, its gingerbread themed to look like ICS.
I only went to rootz bec it was the first place I came upon while searching for ROMs for the i727.
Ok let me make my actual questions simpler for anyone who would like to answer:
1. Is Sky Ice Cream Sandwich (2.3.6)the best overall and stable ROM out there that resembles ICS? I understand this is a subjective query, but I am interested in some thoughts.. I see lists of other ROMs but no opinions on comparisons here or anywhere.
2. Is there any ROM that makes tethering 100% free, including data charges.
3. How will the advent of the real ICS affect the current ROMs... i.e., will new ROMs take advantage of something they could not at the current moment? I am assuming since the hardware is staying the same, the release of ICS will have no bearing at all on any current ROMs.
Thanks.
I know with the tethering part I have Sprint and I dont pay to have tethering. The Rom I have lets me do it and it cost NOTHING
Just make sure you dont go over your data plan

dont know why you would link me that thread. i am fully capable of making my own roms.
as for tethering, yes, nearly every rom you find in dev section enable tethering. they do not require anything from AT&T, as that is the point, we dont want to pay AT&T twice for the data that we have already.
LOL no clue why it linked you... was trying to tell Dathaeus to look and read for himself. I have flashed your ROMS before great work by the way

I know they allow tethering, but I have heard many people who say after doing so they got warnings from ATT about needing to increase their data plan etc etc... also that there is some software that ATT looks at to see if the data is being used by a browser or by plain texting/emails only.
So you are saying we can do gigs of transfer a month with a custom ROM tether and ATT will be none the wiser? Then that is truly awesome.

Is there seriously no way to avoid this or at least make it harder for them to find out? Like switching APNs or something?
For instance, isn't there an iPhone app that has a setting that lets you appear not to be tethering?

I read from @AdamOutler that AT&T can still track tethering by seeing that their data is being used through a computer browser's UserAgent. So as long as you change your Chrome/Firefox UA to whatever your mobile browser's UA is, they would have no way of telling.

Best I've used so far was [ROM] Sky Ice Cream Sandwich (2.3.5 <<WHAT DOES THIS SAY?) Multiple Flavors 1/24/12
Very quick. Battery life was about average. Seanscreams seems to be a very helpful developer.
I'm currently using
[ROM][UXKJ2]Buoyancy v1.3.0||Rogers/AT&T||[1/25/12]
Which provides the best battery life so far and comes with a ics launcher, but seemed kind of buggy. I'm using the tw launched that was also included. Jomeister did a good job and included a good kernel and uc script.

<snipped because I just repeated what plwalsh88said> That way when you tether, if you were using a different APN and your browser says it is on a phone, maybe it would not be possible to be noticed?
This site says how to do this.

I thought they also cross reference data transfer per month to discover people who tether... I guess it may depend on the plan you have/allotted data per month?

Hmmm, maybe I'll stick with the ICS 2.3.6 (i think it is now) until some of these others get more stable... as long as it isnt worse than the stock battery usage I should be fine for now, but thats exactly the helpful info I needed, thanks guys!

[q] how about this...

Instead of making roms with all kinds of tweaks how about making an ICS Rom for tmous sensation 4g with everything working? Truthfully all I want in a Rom is an overclock kernel fm radio a browser that I can actually search with and most importantly tmo WiFi calling to work. All that other stuff (i don't know what it is) I could care less about. I just want the previously mentioned features to work and that's it. Sense overlay is nice but not even a requirement. I hear all kinds off sh*t talking about HTC devs that take forever to get their software out but at least when it comes out it seems to work. Instead of these roms that are kicked out to us everyday with a list of important features that just don't work. What is the point? Right now I'm waiting for an official ics update to come out and I'm just sticking to that. Rooted overclocked and thats about it. I have tried many of these custom roms and they all have some stupid problem which should not be happening. What's the point if no features work and the phone reboots all the time? For all this I could have stuck with any off the rack garbage bullish*t android phone. I get the same garbage performance. I mean most of the time people buy a phone because of certain features. But I don't think I'm asking for too much to have a proper stock browser WiFi calling and little or no random reboots. Basically, what's the problem here?

Never once did I imply that I thought it was easy nor did I say I wanted anything so badly, except for working features. In fact I said I would wait for an official update. I don't understand where that reply came from. As far as making a Rom myself I would love to but to ask a question on this website is like pulling teeth so...
OP, don't forget that developers need to release a somewhat working ROM in order for people to test and find things that might be wrong with it. Also you can't really blame them if they get excited and want to release as soon as they got something.
Ha! Wow, that's a pretty disrespectful rant...
You do realize that developers on xda and other sites are not employees, right? Nobody here is getting a salary, and projects that are released are done so for the benefit of the community. HTC has recently made it somewhat easier with OTA, RUU, and ICS kernel sources... yet, many projects are based on reverse engineering a ROM instead of working from the ground up with AOSP source. If something was compiled solely from AOSP then you'd have a pretty lack-luster ROM without any of the fancy functionality I'm sure you're looking for.
Now, add to all of this the fact that google REALLY changed things up with ICS and it's understandable that hiccups are going to occur!
Relax, crack a beer, wait for your OTA, and don't expect others to put work/family/school/etc... aside so that YOU can have wi-fi calling on a custom ROM.

Nice passive insult.
Anyway, two options:
1) Flash a RUU
2) Downgrade to hboot 1.17 and restore the gingerbread backup (that you didn't make) or flash a basically stock rom - such as ARHD.

otherwise jsut search for the T-Mobile add-on pack

Should have been taken as more of a kick in the pants than an insult. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe a functioning browser and (in my opinion) WiFi calling are a wee bit more important than ever changing colors and boot animations. At this point I see no advantage with ics rather than gb. In fact for me I'm at a disadvantage because I have to pay an overage charge next month due to the WiFi calling not working. I don't think anyone could hardly blame me for being a little upset.

I thanked how ignorant that was. Every rom I've tried has had a functioning browser and since only two carriers on Earth use Wifi calling (I don't believe it's even the same kind), it's not exactly a priority. ICS brings HWA and proper dual core support - how you missed that; I'll never know.
WiFi calling is free if you have the free WiFi calling plan so yes it a priority for me. And um duh I am pretty sure what I am trying to do is go back to a stock Rom.

And you wouldn't have had to make multiple threads complaining about how other people who don't owe you anything aren't making you perfect custom ROMs fast enough.

Darsh. Please read more.
How about keep a stock backup on your computer too? I suppose that would require thinking ahead.
Of all the sensation devs we have I cannot think of one that uses tmobile USA, so it's not a priority for them is it?
Get over it, flash your stock rom, and go back to thinking the world revolves around you ;-)
enough flaming and fighting. Keep on topic, if you can't help don't troll the thread. Thanks.
noellenchris
you do know there are apps such as groove ip and talkatone that let you make wifi calling so you dont have to rely on t mobiles wifi calling app. and ics has many advantages besides "flashy colors and boot animations". and i as well have never had a problem with the browser in any of the 8-10 roms ive flashed. oh well have fun downgrading!
I guess ill never understand why people act like me going back to a different Rom so I can use a certain feature that I need without an issue would make any difference in your life. After all isn't that what the hell xda developers is for is to have a choice? Are people really like that on earth? I don't know you, you're nowhere near me and I don't give a damn about you. Why would I be told to "have fun downgrading"? Is my Rom downgrade affecting everyone's phone or is it just mine? I guess as long as someone else can say they have the latest Rom kernal and radio they can say that they're better than the next guy. I guess your idea of me "upgrading" is to have a phone with ics but to have my WiFi calling not work. Yeah, that's really an upgrade for me. Thanks for your godlike insight. I needed it to find my way in life to get a non working ics build on my phone so I can say I'm as good as you are. Thanks god.
I don't like the way the xda forums show up on the browser on ics. It's hard to explain but its like part of the screen slides over instead of the whole thing. It's wierd I know. I mean dang though if I'm having a problem is it really hurting anyone else if I don't wanna deal with it on my phone? I hate how the web pages are on ics. how many times did I say I want to go back to gb and wait for an official tmous ics update to come out and go from there? Wow. This is crazy. All I wanted was WiFi calling and a stock browser. I had no idea I was hurting anyone else by asking what I need to do to put gb back on my phone. I'm sorry. I'll just pay money in overage charges so that I can say my phone is better than his because it has ics even though its not really better for me cause my WiFi calling don't work and I don't like the browser. I'm so sorry.

No one cares what ROM you want to use.
What cheeses people off is the way you complain about the hard work of others not being good enough for you and demand that this community drops everything it's doing to help you do something. And you act like we're bad people because we're not putting YOUR needs as our top priority.
You get back what you give. You give everyone a bad attitude and bark demands. So you get nasty responses.
There's 100 threads around here for people asking the same kind of thing you are. (So for one...search before asking) Those threads are usually from people asking nicely, and you'll see that there's a large number of people happily willing to help. Since lots of people want to help others, but no one wants to help you, consider that your approach may be the problem.
And my post is being 100% sincere and helpful. It's probably the best advice you can get on XDA because I'm giving you the key to getting more help on future problems instead of being ignored and chastised again. Take this advice seriously and you'll get a lot more assistance in the future. Don't take this advice and your next question will irritate everyone again and you'll get a lot of grief again.
Ok
I don't recall making any demands. Not sure where that came from. I was frustrated and in urgent need of the instructions but I never demanded anything. And I thanked the only person who did help. I mean what the heck I was getting mad that the WiFi calling kept cutting out and no patch would fix it. And I was using the hell outta my minutes. For some reason WiFi calling wouldn't work with any rom I tried. Yeah I want ics on my phone but it just ain't workin. And yes I superwiped and all that kinda stuff. Hell I love the color and and animations and tweaks but man keep it real functionality trumps colors. I'm trying these kitchens myself and I'm working on my own ics tmous rom. Apparently there are no US sensation devs so we're on our own here.
And this is what I found on the arhd page about WiFi calliing

Until T-Mobile releases an update WiFi Calling will be unreliable. As it is the included WiFi Calling is merely an add-on and not meant specifically for this base release.
If you truly need WiFi calling it's best you stick to a stock ROM or perhaps a Gingerbread build with proven reliability.

[Guide] Quick and dirty guide to adding WiMax to your CM7-based ports.

I've had a few folks message me with requests for guidance on how to add 4G WiMax to CM7-based ports. I figured I would go ahead and write up this quick guide on how to do it for LeWa OS. This should be very similar with other ROMs.
Let's start with the easy part.
- Copy /system/app/CMWimaxSettings.apk.
- Copy /system/framework/wimax-api.jar.
Decompile /system/framework/framework-res.apk
Edit ./res/xml/bools.xml
- change config_wimaxEnabled value to true
Edit ./res/xml/strings.xml
- change config_wimaxServiceJarLocation value to /system/framework/wimax-api.jar
- change config_wimaxManagerClassname value to com.htc.net.wimax.WimaxController
- change config_wimaxServiceClassname value to com.android.server.WimaxService
Edit ./res/xml/arrays.xml
- in networkAttributes element, add
wimax,6,6,2
(I add it after wifi)
- in radioAttributes element, add
6,1
(I add it to the top)
- in config_tether_upstream_regexs element, add
wimax\\d
(I add it to the bottom)
Now somewhere (probably Settings.apk), you'll want to add a link to it.
Example from my LeWa OS port:
Code:
<com.android.settings.IconPreferenceScreen android:title="@string/wimax_settings" android:key="wimax_settings" settings:icon="@drawable/ic_settings_wifi">
<intent android:targetPackage="com.android.settings.wimax" android:action="android.intent.action.MAIN" android:targetClass="com.android.settings.wimax.WimaxSettings" />
</com.android.settings.IconPreferenceScreen>
.
That should be it.
PS-
While you're in arrays.xml and looking at config_tether_upstream_regexs, you should also look for something like wlan\\d (if it's there, it's probably the second item) and change it to eth\\d if you see it. This will fix tethering.
I appreciate this guide shall use this on my aed ios port

Stupid question, so why are developers not including this did in there work?

I'd first like to emphasize that this guide is primarily targeted at developers of "CM7-based ports," i.e., taking a ROM that is based on CM7 from one device and bringing to the Evo 4G.
Now to answer your question: It's because device from which they are taking the ROM does not support WiMax and/or is not an HTC phone.
As an example, the version of LeWa OS that I use is made for a Chinese phone (U8800X) that doesn't have built-in WiMax support (and it is not made by HTC). The ROM should not be expected to support WiMax out of the box and certainly shouldn't be expected to use HTC's WiMax API. The developers that are porting the ROM are then tasked with having to shoehorn WiMax support into the ROM. This is a breeze when the ROM is based on CM7 (not nearly as easy when the ROM is, for example, MIUI) because it's just a matter of changing some settings, as demonstrated in the first post.

So...any ideas about the MIUI roms? I have been trying to get 4g to work forever. Gave up, and now I'm back at it. I'm using the kitchen btw. I tried including all the libs, jars, etc. from c7 and the phone booted normally, but I got nothing as far as wimax. There was no toggle present so I DL'd one from the market. It stated that my phone wasn't 4g capable. Back to the drawing board.
Do you have any ideas why this isn't working? You mentioned that your method wouldn't be as easy with MIUI. Why? I'm only asking because I'm seeking the education. My research has only rendered complaints from those who want it but can't figure it out. BTW, I'm not a fan of CIUI but I understand their reasons for the departure from MIUI altogether.
Thanks in advance!

Yeah, the reason none of this will work in MIUI (or any other ROM not based on CM7) is because these are all just configuration settings. The CM7 framework reads the value of config_wimaxServiceJarLocation so that it knows where to find the WiMax API, for example. MIUI framework would simply ignore that value because it's not programmed to interpret it.
I know fergie and the guys got WiMax working on MIUI on some other device(s). Last I checked, they were working on getting it to work with the Evo 4G as well.
LOL I was gonna do this exactly for the JoyOS port. I saw the differences in Decks framework and the JoyOS framework and was like hmmmmmm. I put it off until I got everything else where I wanted it! Good looking out for those who need it for their ports or future ports!!

So basically I'd need to build a cm7 based miui rom from scratch to make it work...Jeeze.:what:

Cool just wanted to double check

LineageOS 14.1 for N920C installs on N920P just fine. Now, how to address cellular?

Howdy friends!
I was able to install the SM-N920C Lineage-14.1 ROM by RaymanFX on my SM-N920P Sprint device.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/orig-development/rom-lineageos-14-1-t3572047
To make it install I simple unzipped the ROM, and edited the file "META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script" and remove the top line that starts with "assert". This line is basically the part of the script that makes the ROM abort in TWRP if your device isn't nobleltejv. Then I re-zipped the contents of the ROM, pushed via adb and flashed per the instructions in RaymanFX's thread.
It seems to run really well -- it seems more stable than the CM 13 ROM that I tried previously. However, like the CM 13 ROM, cellular doesn't seem to work.
I got a good deal on this device primarily for hacking on it, so I don't mind trying some things (although I'd prefer to avoid bricking it). My only limitation is that I am a GSM user so I can't test full CDMA functionality while I go. That being said, I don't mind grabbing a cheep prepaid CDMA SIM if I actually make any progress.
I'm looking for resources on how to diagnose why cellular doesn't work. I'm fairly new to hacking on Android, but I'm an experienced software engineer and have a strong Linux background, so I'm pretty confident that with docs I could get to the bottom of this.
If anyone with more experience in this realm can point me at the appropriate docs/examples/forums etc. I be happy to take a swing at it.

Have you pm'd @RaymanFX to see if he can point you in the right direction. Also @tdunham, not sure where he stands in taking on another project. Either way hopefully you'll make some progress!!!

Not a bad idea. I don't really have time to be a project maintainer right now -- hoping if I make progress I can just submit a patch against Rayman's work and occasionally make any needed updates, but I don't really know how ROM projects are typically managed.
Like many folks on XDA, I love Samsung's hardware but don't care for their implementation of Android. I generally prefer something closer to stock like Lineage or AOSP. Sprint doesn't get a lot of love (although Moar is a pretty nice ROM) and I'm sure those folks who prefer something closer to stock would benefit.

I completely agree. I have no complaints. MOAR is an excellent ROM. I would like to run Lineage or an AOSP ROM just for a change, but I knew from the beginning what I was getting myself into.
I'm not sure what all needs edited, but AFAIK the RIL needs to be. How or what needs to be changed is beyond me.

Moderator: should this thread live in one of the development sections?
Had a quick exchange with Rayman. He seems like a nice guy!
My objective is to get the modem working to some degree, but no promises about things like proper CDMA configuration, band selection, etc. Not really sure how all that stuff works, TBH. If I can get he modem to go, though, maybe someone who actually knows a thing or two about wireless can help with the other stuff?
Seems like the first order of business is to discover what modem hardware this thing is using, and what drivers it wants. I'll need to get root and dig around in sysfs/devfs. I'll post what I learn.
My day job is as a web developer and I'm an embedded hobbyist. Many of the ROM devs on XDA seem to work as embedded developers in their day jobs. I expect this to be a slow-going learning project for me in my limited spare time.
I'll do my best to document my progress (and foibles) in this thread in case anyone can learn a thing or two from it.

It seems like talking to him has steered you in the right direction!!! Take your time. If anything you'll learn something that you can apply later in your career or personal projects!
Have u tried flashing the sprint modem?
@jnovek if you could provide the zip you put together to flash I would try something in my spare time to help. Doesnt seem to be a very busy thread.
Long time no chat. I've been busy .
Could someone post the output to "getprop" from a stockish Sprint device on 7.x? Among other things I'd like to see what magic incantations are used for the ro.telephony settings.

Not totally sure how to use the hosting that everyone here uses and I have limited time this morning to play around w/this, but I can give you brief instructions on how to roll it yourself. It's super easy.
1) Download the n920c rom linked in the first post.
2) Unzip it.
3) Edit the file "META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script".
4) Remove the first line -- it starts with "assert". You can just straight up delete it.
5) Zip everything back up.
6) Flash using the instructions provided in the linked thread for n920c.
Any headway here?

What that mean "No service tho"
It means the RIL and APNs need to be edited and added I believe.

S Pen works?
I flashed the rom, but S pen is not working anymore. And has anyone figured out how to set up the network?
The developers of the ROM are working on it. But as of now this ROM is not for our phones unless you're going to only use it on WiFi. Cellular connections of any sort are out of order.
