I really have no idea why a lot of you guys are still on stock?
This is my very first android, and i took 2 hours reading and another hour asking questions. and another hour rooting my phone.
Just root your damn phone.
I have 3 kids. Taking 3 hours out of my day to root my phone is not an option.
I did make time to mess with my htc incredible only because is was a one click trick.
30 minutes a day.. its worth it.
your question should have been "why do you stay unrooted".. THAT it understandable.
Stock ROM is pretty good though.
Cute dog. is there a way to edit topics?
I stayed unrooted for about three weeks. It took me that long to work up the nerve to root. After I'd read the procedure through a few times, asked a few questions, and, most importantly, satisfied myself that it was entirely reversible, I went for it.
I'm still stock because flashing roms and losing some of my settings got old on my Nexus One. I simply tired of flashing kernels, radios, roms, themes and never really being any happier than I was to start with. Been there done that. I did the whole "I got my first android and want to be like the cool kids and root". I've been using Android and flashing roms for years.
I was always tweaking and I would improve one thing, and another thing would be degraded or broken.I would get better battery life but have to deal with reboots. I would get great GPS but then wifi would break, or the device would get hot...or it would be stable and basically like it was before I ever even rooted in the first place.
CM7 was the best I used(most stable anyway), but even then I got really bored. I tried some Sense roms and really liked them but they were all buggy as hell as well. So I decided to get a Sense device. IF I hated Sense, I would certainly root but then again if I hated sense I wouldn't have bought the Tbolt.
So far I have not had one reboot, not one single issue except that GPS can be slow once in awhile, but then I see folks with rooted devices, flashed kernels and radios complaining of the same thing. Today I went all over town and GPS worked great...it's a random thing.
When I see a rom I HAVE TO HAVE, I'll root and flash it, but so far I have not seen anything that makes me want give up my perfectly working device/os.
With the Nexus One I found the Flavored Ice themes and fell in love with Dark Cherry. I rooted just so I could have that theme. Unfortunately theming is difficult for Sense so there are not really many themes to lure me in.
Some things I DO miss from being rooted, Ad-Free, SetCPU(but again usually ahve to live with some reboots which I hate), being able to flash some cool things like the Hulu apk. no getting around it there are things I miss from being rooted.
However, I have a rooted Moto Zoom and I use that now more than my TBolt. My TBolt has become more like a phone again and I just want it stable for phones calls and navigation.
As a matter of fact, I have rejected Verizon's update because for ONCE I have a device that I am perfectly happy with as is.
If I were going to root it would be to flash this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013577
and then install ad-free and a few other apps I miss. As it stands I can afford to pay for tethering so I don't even have any motivation to root for free tethering.
I know, what about bloat? Well I have over a hundred apps installed and I still have 1.97 GB of space left. I came from Nexus One where with zero apps installed I had 120MB of free app space! The apps simply don't bother me being there om my Tbolt. Space isn't an issue for me.
To wrap it up, my battery life is fine, my phone call quality is superior to anything I've ever had. I love the sense UI and my device/os is stable as hell.
I am happy.
PS: FWIW, I did root my TBolt using the one click method at android central just to make sure it would work with the USB port on my computer, I then promptly unrooted it. I can re-root anytime I want. No hurry and I may very well never re-root, especially given that I will be again upgrading my phone again as soon as the next best thing is released(that is not the Charge).

While I am rooted, I know exactly what you mean. I am on Das BAMF 1.6.2 and am planning to stay put for awhile. Sometimes I fail to use the best features of my phone because I've recently flashed and don't want to input my user name and PW into Pandora while I am driving down the freeway.
Once we have RIL and are officially supported by CM7 I will get back into the flashing game. I am not a big fan of Sense and have done my best to avoid it on my device using LP, Contapps, Handcent

If you flash new roms every day, how do you rebuild your desktops, reinstall apps, etc? You do this procedure every day????

I don't think a lot of people flash new roms everyday.
Usually if you are updating a Rom, like from Das bamf 162 to 163, you don't need to wipe. apps, texts, layout, and what not stay the same.

I was the same way with Slacker over the past year. especially because I was rooted and used A2SD, it would always log me out even if I hadn't recently flashed. Slacker just doesn't seem to like being on the SD card and hold the password at the same time. At the end of the day I'm not in any way against rooting and I'm glad it's there as an option for when I get bored. I always do get bored, either with stock or flashing roms...or just with any given device itself.

This is correct. The issue is not UPDATING roms...you get to keep all your settings that way. The issue is having to wipe before flashing a new rom. Me personally, it takes me a whole hell of a lot longer than two minutes to get everything back the way I want it. Downloading all my apps is not the issue. It's getting all of the settings for over a hundred apps back the way I want. Just as an example. Every website I visit I log into with a password. I use Skyfire, stock, Dolphin HD. When I wipe I have to go back and re-log into every damn website I visit again...and I have to do it every time I want to try a new rom...which ends up being often because once you flash one, it leads to another and another, always searching for that perfect rom. I often did flash at least every other day. Most developers would update their rom, fixing or adding something and the temptation was too strong not to test drive it again. But liek I said it makes the device never feel complete because I never settled on anything long term.
I will say this tho, it was rooting and flashing that made me realize how much I enjoyed Sense UI. I tried EVERY rom there was for the N1 and never enjoyed anything the way I did Sense(although I did love ROD's MIUI MoD rom for N1+ LauncherPro Plus...it was quick as hell and had beautiful transitions, not as stable as CM7 tho) and thru root and flashing you can try different UI's and find the one that is right for you. So rooting and flashing is definitely a great thing and like I said I'm glad it's an option I have to admit I miss that little high you get while waiting for a new rom to flash. Wondering if you've soft bricked, and the anticipation of seeing all the goodies new roms contain. The feeling of having total control over your device is nice too.

+1 to this, exactly what I though too.
I bricked my Droid X a couple of times, and was able to get it back every time, but it taught me to be careful.
I flash a new Rom daily and set up a whole new theme every time I always got a new phone that way lol

I'm sure I'll root eventually, I'm just kinda in the same boat as MuckenMire, tired on the endless rom shuffle. The TBolt is my first Android, but I'm coming from a number of WinMo 6.x devices. As some of you probably know from experience you pretty much had to flash a custom rom to make many of those phones usable. The Tbolt is a much better user experience stock than any of my old WinMo devices were with custom roms. Right now the bloatware would be the only reason I would bother with root. This phone is fast, stable and highly customizable stock. Right now I just don't see a compelling reason to root it.
That being said, first time I need to teather and VZW wants to charge me, I will probably root. I don't do it often enough to justify paying extra for it.

I'm over myself. I have time, but I just don't want to root. I'm happy with what I have. None of the roms look that great to me, so why bother? Why do some of you feel like everyone has to root. Like we're idiots cause we're running stock. Why do you really care what others are doing?
I know that my question has been answered in countless threads.... but what I'm hoping to do is get this information compiled into one thread (and if it exists already, please point me there).
What I'm wondering is who's stock, who's rooted, what ROM you're running and if you had any issues.
I'm really not looking for any fixes to problems in this thread, just a simple compilation to get percentages, because I like to play the numbers.
I'll even start:
Stock Inspire with official sideloading and custom APN for hotspot
Only a random occurance where screen rotation stops
Owned since April 22
I've run LeeDroid and Android Revolution so far. With both ROM's I've noticed nice improvements in overall responsiveness of the phone. However, both suffer slight lag from the application Slacker Radio (just in case you enjoy streaming music ) that builds up over time to the point where I have to reset my phone just to continue to use it.
With LeeDroid, I've noticed that my Pandora app doesn't give it lag, or such a small amount that I don't really notice/care about it.
I've run a lot of Radio's (With their RIL) so I won't go into that, but the only Kernel I've ever played with was the oen for LeeDroid. Dunno if it actually did anything.
LeeDroid also, of the two (three if you count stock) ROM's I've run has the best battery life by far. Can't really go into official numbers since I've been tweaking my phone non-stop for a week now working out a few signal/speed bugs, however I've noticed that I don't have to plug it into my external battery except once a day, even after tweaking and adjusting non-stop for 4-6 hours.
So yeah, that's my take on it. If you're willing to sit down and play with things to get it to work, I'd say go for it. If you want something quick and easy, then I'd suggest maybe holding off a bit and enjoying stock.
Well, I ran my phone bone stock for the first 3 weeks of owning it, then rooted without any issue using bubby's simple root method.
Waited another ~1.5 months before flashing the rom I'm using now, Inspired Ace.
The rom has been a flawless, near stock (sense) gingerbread experience. I often forget I even flashed anything, except for the little gingerbread differences, of course.
Seriously, my guess is that an offical gb release from HTC for this phone would look nearly identical to this rom.
Haven't done anything radio-wise aside from flashing the matching ril for the stock radio. I haven't even updated to the new OTA radio yet.

Nah. I've actually been getting the "itch."
There's so many roms to check out, and I'm running out of excuses not to try some.
I'm just still a little hazy on some of the pre-flashing procedures, mainly cwr related. Like differences between "wiping" and format /system, /data, etc.
I'm finding that trying too hard to avoid misery before it happens results in perpetual inaction, though.

I just got the Inspire last week (my first Android phone), and I can't help but tinker, so I've rooted and put a custom ROM on already. (LeeDroid and now CyanogenMod 7) I found these two video guides to be very helpful, as I wasn't familiar with a lot of the terminology people throw around.
Rooting:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCcd1XQrTzE
Custom ROM:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUUo9EMlT5Y
Be warned, this took me a lot longer than I anticipated (a couple of hours total, but I was multi tasking. [multi tasking = watching Game of Thrones]).
I really like CM7, it feels faster than stock and my battery life seems better as well.
Good luck!
I ran Stock for about 2 days. No known Issues.
I then Rooted and Ran Bubby's one click and ran the rooted stock RUU for about 3 days. No Known issues.
I then flashed Ace Inspired. It was fantastic. I ran it for about 2 days. Only issue I had was screen would stick in rotation. It just wouldn't move. A Reboot fixed it. I made a back so I could easily return to it. I haven't.
I then flashed Leedriod. I have been running this rom since. Its amazing. I have seen no issues. I Also made a Backup of this rom so I could easily return to it. I have.
I then flashed Gingerbeast yesterday. Its fast and clean. But...Sirius Radio would randomly disconnect. Wireless would random disconnect. Bluetooth stuttered.
I returned to Leedriod this morning. Again, no issues.
When my inspire was stock everything seemed to work like it should. Except I had one huge problem, and its a problem that I have had with any phone from at&t, I had absolutely zero service here in southwest Wisconsin where I'm going to school.
I then decided to root in hopes that with a new radio I could get signal. I went with Leedroids Rom and kernel and couldn't be happier. Now I get full service edge! I didn't even have to mess with the radio.
I still can't believe that with those two changes I get great service. I'm comparing to 3 phones all on the same network, razr, blackjack 2, and Samsung flight 2. The inspire was the second to worst service here, now blows all of the other phones out of the water.
Thanks Leedroid!!

Thanks Tx, I appreciate that. I have yet to flash a rom the "regular" way, that is, other than rom manager, with the exception of rooting, but that was rather automated, so having these step-by-steps is extremely helpful.

Not necessarily. There was a recent thread where someone was having problems with sound quality on his phone, which he depended on heavily for work, but i suspected other factors involved with that.
I'll tell you right now, this here phone in my hands is work-ready. Rooted and flashed a stable non-stock rom.
If anything, maybe if you had a backup phone just as a CYA type of thing for the process and a "burn-in" period, in case you run into some speedbumps along the way.
I mean, if you plan on going off hard on the flashing thing, then just due to the shear number of rom changes, something is bound to get a little goofy on the software end, but not anything that isn't fixable, for the most part.
When you start getting careless with things like partitioning or radio flashing, then you could run into some serious problems.

A few points:
-it's very, very hard to brick your phone by rooting and flashing roms, so if you're stressing about that at all, don't. It only gets dicey is you are flashing radios via fastboot or messing with ENG-OFF. You don't need to do either of those things, and you won’t either accidentally.
-tinkering and trying many roms is very easy. If you do a nandroid backup (aka a backup with Clockworkmod recovery), you’re golden. It takes about 5 minutes to do a backup. If you want to come back to the previous rom, simply restore in Clockworkmod recovery. EVERYTHING will restore as it was before. After you do a backup, boot up and rename the backup file to something meaningful, like “Dilligaf5-20110534”. Make sure there are no spaces in the name, or Clockworkmod recovery will upchuck. The backup files are on your SD card in the \clockworkmod\backup directory. I have a collection of 10 backup roms. I can restore any one of them in 5 minutes with all my settings intact.
-if you are going from froyo to froyo or gb to gb, you can used Titanium backup to backup and restore sms/mms. Just backup “dialer storage”. When you get your new rom up, restore dialer storage. You will have to reboot after you restore in order to see your sms/mms messages.
-buy Setcpu and root explorer.
-checkout the rom kitchen. You can do lots of neat stuff like changing the battery meter, status bar, icons, fonts, animation, and boot animation. http://uot.dakra.lt/
-AOSP roms like CM7 and others are very fast and have good battery life, but some the apps are not as feature-rich. For example e-mail is missing a lot of options.
-GB roms (like LeeDroid and AR) are nice, but to me, GB doesn’t really have that much to offer over Froyo. LeeDroid has a great kernel and battery life. It also has a really nice call recorder. From a UI perspective
-My favorite rom is Dilligaf 2.0. You should give it a try.
Since I can't delete, just ignore this post. Lol

I rooted and tried several ROMs. RCMixHD and TB Fusion were both nice, but the keyboard seemed to lag and freexe a good bit on those. Inspired Ace is the ROM I am currently on. I used the battery calibration technique used here to maximize my battery usage. For the battery history section of that thread be sure to grab this app, as the method listed there is not coded into GB ROMs. I have flashed ROMs once or twice and they have not booted, but a simple battery pull and boot to clockworkmod recovery (turn on with power and volume down buttons pressed at the same time then scroll to recovery) to wipe and reflash worked fine.
Well, I now officially have no warranty
Waiting for my SD contents to copy back over, and I think I'll start with Inspired Ace.
I welcome recommendations, but for now I think I'll stick with Sense ROMs.
Im fairly new to the phone mod game and im the only one of my friends who gives a damn. Needless to say that means ive no one to talk to about this stuff. I recently rooted my Inspire (aahk) works great. Now my phone is insane with speeds like ive never seen. However i was flashing some roms around trying to find the one just right for me, and thought id try CM7 did a full wipe. Being the impulsive person i am i only backed up on my SD and when it told me to do a partition i didnt consider the consequences..... So now im stuck with CM7 (not for me) and i guess ive got to start all over. In trying to download new ROMS it seems that only the ones n the premium section will really change the whole phone. Is there a way i can get back to the ROM it had me on just after rooting? Or am i starting all over? would it be wise to unroot and start over? i really dont like the ADW base of CM7. I had been running HoneySense which was awesome but could barely use my data other than the Market..... Yes i know im long winded but like i stated. Ive got no friends that give a damn about their phones. ANY hints tips advice would be appreciated. And to all of you developers, keep up the good work, i envy your skills.... 2 years ago i could barely check an email, and have been learning as much as possible as quick as possible. Thanks for reading my nonsensical ramblings
Also what is the difference with the nandroid and clockworkmod? can i use apps for both or are they root specific... You can laugh if you like
Your nandroid/cwm backups will backup your entire rom. Forget restoring those if you want to go to a different rom. You need to be rooted if you want to perform these actions, but you already are rooted. If you want to backup your apps then use Titanium backup or My backup root to backup just your apps. Don't backup system stuff. You can flash any of the roms in the development section. You do not need to root again. Always wipe before flashing a new rom. In recovery you select wipe and choose to wipe cache, dalvik cache, data/factory reset, and you can also format system if you want. Don't wipe anything else. Backup your data that you want to save before wiping.
Pretty much what Wolf is saying..Also @Diesel321, So what is it that over all your looking to do with your phone.?
Some of the biggest ?s that is asked a lot when it comes to roms is stability, battery life. And whats the "best" and there is really no "best" one. But for I would recommend NinjaRom. I have been running that for @ least 5months and only had minor issue which was fixed from the support team. Also tried android rev,CoreDroid all good stuff.
But when you do flash its a good idea to do a back up. Which I go through ClockWorkMod (CWM) and select back up and I aslo save each back to my sd card and save it the pc to a folder that I created for my Roms/Tweaks/Add-Ons/etc..
but if you need any other ?s just ask or Pm Me glad to help out.
Thanks to both of you guys... Overall i want to speed up my system (which the "set cpu" app and all overclocking apps confuse me) I have tried all different kinds of settings and the only way i can get a decent result is through wifi. Also batterylife and the more i learn about phones the more i like so the deeper i dive the more intriuged i become... I always want more faster and better. As far as ROMS anything based or similar to CM7 i do not like, before i eber rooted i tried the ADW launcher and am not a fan of the set up. I love the sense roms, but the only ones i can find through cwm are HoneySense which only lets me access my data through the market (no browser, no email, no google, no FB) i installed Leedroid last night and its ok but the specs of Honey Wonder look awesome. I cant find it on cwm and i cant seem to gert it from my computer to my phone. Im about to try and put my SD into the cpu and do it that way. When i backup my Apps should i backup my data for them as well? ANd then can i restore them over any rom? or do i go back and restore them from the market, can i save my home screens to restore the way i like them or do i have to do it manually any time? Im sorry if im overloading with questons but as i stated previously none of my friends give a damn about any of this stuff, except one and he kniows about a quarter of what i know. Hes wanting to root his LG OPtimus C but i told him to wait till i learn more about it, also i dont know if there is a root for it. Any other tips and advice are always welcomed appreciated and thanked... Again thanks guys.. One more. Why cant i seem to download anything from my XDA Premium App? that would make my life much easier

Ok.... Where to start... You can back up your apps with data. I restore those because for like any programs such as browsers or any games I want to restore the settings and bookmarks, passwords, etc. Before I restore in a new rom I go through the checked programs that are supposed to be restored, Apps with data in Titanium Backup Pro, and make sure I am only restoring "my" apps. I have often found that TB likes to also backup HTC Sense, etc. I do not want to restore any system apps since this would more than likely cause a problem with the new rom.
As far as overclocking is concerned, a lot of the newer versions of roms do not use SetCPU anymore. They use the Virtuous overclocking daemon script. This works much faster than SetCPU. Using SetCPU with these roms will disable the daemon. the information on the kernel and the overclocking daemon is usually listed in the first post of the rom thread. You can install Sybergunne's Daemon Controller app if it is not already installed to easily change the settings. Overclock carefully. Every phone is different and not all can go as high as others. Some may run stable at 1.6 GHz and others are only stable at 1.1 GHz.
If you are looking for faster data speeds, then that is already cooked into the roms by the developers, although there may always be some tweaking that can be performed. Speed for data is very subjective, because it really depends on your particular area. Radio's and RIL's make a difference also, but what works for me in my area may not work well for you. It is really a trial and error procedure to find out what works for you.
You are looking for sense roms, so Sense 3.0 and 3.5 are the latest for our phones. Go through the Inspire and Desire HD development threads and read the rom descriptions to see what you like. Almost every DHD rom is made to also work with the Inspire. Links to both sections are posted below. Some rom ideas for you to look at are, Android Revolution HD, Rumrunner, Bindroid, RCMix roms, HoneyWonder roms, Cleardroid, Virtuous Unity, etc., etc. You need to decide which ones you want to try. Ok, that is my mouthful.

The rom comes with kernel but aosp kernels go with aosp (android open source project)=cm7 and sence kernels usually with all sence roms
People sometimes flash alternate kernels than what comes with the rom to experiment and see what the performance behavior is like. ALWAYS make a CWM/Nandroid backup of your rom before you flash any mods or kernels. Usually it does not happen, but sometimes a flashed mod or kernel can mess up your phone so it is good to have a backup in case of problems.
So I've got a 16gig SD and I've had to strip it down because it had 14 gigs of music on it. So after I rooted I took a bunch off. Would it be wise to keep 2 SXS? One I can jam too and another for downloading Rome and flashing? Also I CAN flash CM7 kernels to my Sense roms. Has anyone tried that Beatmod BlissSense. It seems cool but it doesn't seem to want to download. You guys are awesome and have helped me it tremendously. I may not be able to help with your computer problems or anything but if you need any advice on home repair or anything like that Im your guy.

Beatmod BlissSense was awesome. Had some minor bugs for me, GPS signal was a littly nutty and my calls kept dropping. (I reflashed the rom when I found this was happening and the issue seemed to disappear). All in all, it was a great rom but since I'm new to the root thing, the flashing bug caught me and off I went into the xda forums..I'm currently running Android Revolution and of all the roms I've flashed, this is by far my favorite.
What exactly is "freezing" an app mean? I've got an idea I just want to make sure I'm right? Is it wise to delete bloatware apps? Would they come back if I needed to unroot?
Freezing an app is a little like deleting it, but safer. If you delete it, you may find out you have big problems because the system app will not reinstall correctly and you end up reinstalling the rom. With freezing you can take it out but restore it exactly the way it was in the system if things go wrong. If you are backing up your rom like you should in case of problems, then that backup usually takes over a gigabyte of space on your sd card, so it sounds like you definitely need to have another card with more space. You have to be careful what kernel you want to try. If it was written for CM7 it may not work with Sense based roms. Depends how it was coded. You have to research information on the kernel to see if it lists anything specific about proprietary installation. If not, then go ahead and try it. BACKUP YOUR ROM FIRST BEFORE FLASHING.
Nice about to flash HoneyWonder now to see whats up..
I see that wolf has covered you on some damn good topics..
I have flashed lots of roms this honey wonder will be like my 9th lol but it all depends on you and the flashing it will take time to see what you like. As to speeding up your phone like set cpu @ the time I found useful cause you were able to set profiles for phone like when its sleep mode set it for like low power. And when your using it have a higher mhz etc.. But I did use juice defender as an app which to me it worked very good.
But to me I like Roms that do not take up memory lol
So im downloading some ROMs to my newly dedicated SD Just curius if i eed anything other than the roms on there? I mean CWM and all of that should be not only on my phones memory but also in most roms correct? You guys have been a huge help! Im loving this honeywonder but want to play around soe more. Ia having a problem with it though sometimes when i try to reboot or anything that should take me to boot it simply will not do it. Ive installed the Inspirefix.zip but am still havingm some issues. And the phone is saying 3G ATT is that just what its saying and im still 4G or has the ROM taken me back to 3??? Just wondering Because its still hella fast im about to trey a readio and ril flash to try and get some more speed. Hopr i dont screw anyhting up

I flashed honey with out the inspire fix if you did I would plug your phone back in go to you sd card and delete it out and reflash.
If you have not made a back up in cwm then do so and it will located in your sd card in the folder clock work and then a sub folder called back ups. I myself save that back on my pc just to have.
The 3g icon I had that and its ok.

I wanted to thank the developers of MR3 in this thread. Liquid, Jester, etc.
I'm a long time lurker of this forum since I got my Thunderbolt. I'm VERY VERY appreciative of the developers for creating a very functional ICS rom for the Thunderbolt. Shame on HTC and Verizon for sandbagging so long with what should be a very simple upgrade for them. I was running Thundershed for awhile but grew tired of the Gingerbread look and feel of Android. My friends all mostly have newer phones with ICS, and I couldn't believe that it was supposed to be out in August and it's now mid-October and it's still not out.
To my surprise, I log on to here and see that an ICS ROM had been released.
My only issues with this ROM are random restarts and the white screen error in Facebook/Gmail/etc. I don't really use the video camera much in general; could you use an aftermarket app, or is it broken period?
Otherwise, I absolutely LOVE this and will never go back to Verizon's bloated software. Even when an OTA is released with ICS I won't go back. My phone is running much faster and much better than with Sense and Gingerbread. With data off I had a 10% decrease in battery in 7 hours; with data on and normal use I'll get maybe 5 hours out of a charge on this ROM. About normal for this phone and it's absolutely terrible battery life with the stock battery.
I have it overclocked to 1.5ghz running interactiveX as my governor. It runs beautifully, other than those two minor issues I pointed out above. I haven't experienced any data drops or anything out of the sort like that.

I second this thread.
A major thanks goes out to all of you who develop, in any way, for the Thunderbolt community. This even includes testers.
To answer your questions...
The video and front camera are broken even with an aftermarket app and will remain broken, most likely, until Verizon releases the OTA. From the OTA, our awesome developers will then be able to fix camera issues and many other issues that will make their ROM's 100% stable.
Also, if you get random reboots, you may want to flash to a different radio.
If you are currently running the OTA radios from the 2.11.605.19 software and still get these reboots, try flashing the combo radio and hopefully the reboots will vanish or, at least, happen less often.
If you go to your settings, about phone, software information, more, and look at the baseband version...
If the numbers you see are:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then you are on the OTA 2.11.605.19 radios, which is my recommendation for the radios to use with this ROM. If these are the radio numbers you see, try the combo radio. If the numbers you see under your phones baseband version is not:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then it may be:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
If it is:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
Try flashing the 2.11.605.19 OTA radios found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605557
If you have the 2.11.605.19 radios, though, try flashing the combo radio found here:

Definitely want to ditto this thread. Thanks for continuing to support the Thunderbolt. I was on the verge of retiring the Thunderbolt. ICS has brought new the Tbolt new life though!
thanks for the links. I'm going to try upgrading tonight and see if that helps. I notice you flash the radio in hboot. If I do a nandroid backup, does it also backup the radio (so I can restore it)? Or if I **** up, will it be permanently bricked?
Ditto to all that has been said. Thank You to all who made this happen, including HTC and Verizon. Their inaction drove me to decide to root and find alternatives. I've been incredibly pleased with MR3.
Thanks all!

If you backup that ROM after flashing the radio, it will back up the ROM. Hboot is a whole different thing than the recovery. That radio is downloaded to the phone and will automatically run on any ROM after its downloaded, even if you start from scratch. But flashing any of those two radios will not brick you on any ROM. Worst case being you won't have signal or data until you flash different radios again.
Say if you upgraded to the newer radios, and then you flash a ROM based on an older software version, you won't brick. In fact, you may not ever experience any issues. Maybe just signal changes or random signal drops.
But no, it won't brick you. It's almost impossible to brick a Thunderbolt.
I recommend after flashing the new radios, immediately go and either change the name from PG05IMG to something custom, move into a different folder that's off of the root of the SD card, or just delete it once flashed.
This is for in a such case where you need to get back into recovery from hboot, it won't prompt you to install the radio again. Because if you had to get into recovery from hboot, it wouldn't allow you to since it runs a check for the PG05IMG files first... and with that being said... I was always told to never flash the same radio twice without changing to a new one first.

i dont' see why these ROMs get so much acclaim... when i tried LiquidSmooth it wouldn't stay connected to the Internet. tried to toggle wifi and 3G/4G. nothing works and i have to reboot the phone every time i want to use the Internet.
Liquid MR3: the setup crashed and now the ROM won't even come all the way up...
unless my phone's broken or something (going to Verizon tomorrow to reflash and check it), i say they're both absolute garbage. i've had much better luck with ROMs on other phones.

well i reflashed Liquid this morning and it didn't crash this time, connected fine via wifi and setup completed properly.
all of my radio issues were on the old version (not sure if there's a difference in radios or whatnot), but if it acts up again i will try your recommendations. thanks a lot.

ah i see what happened now.
the first time i flashed it, i cleared /data after the flash before i brought the OS up, but you've included the launcher as a user app and not a system app. was this intentional? a user could easily screw up by uninstalling the launcher and have no way to interact with the OS. shouldn't there be a default launcher embedded in the system programs?
i'm an Android dev, but my understanding of system development is limited, but if i'm not mistaken, any Android ROM should come with a default launcher that is not uninstallable and has no icon as a backup launcher just in case.
He did install it that way so if the user wants to install their own launcher and remove the default. Its simple to make the new one a system app. All that has to be done is move the apk to /system and it is uninstallable.

Hi,
Yes, I'm a noob but I'm a smart noob. I refuse to just "jump" in without having enough knowledge about what is necessary to properly modify my phone (AT&T HOX). I have looked up terms I was unfamiliar with etc and sat and waited patiently reading other people's issues. I like many come from Apple (thankfully I switched away) and jailbreaking was about as easy as it got. So here goes.....
1. I am really most interested (at the time being) in getting rid of the ridiculous apps these phones come plugged up with.
2. I already think the phone is fast (light years faster than any iPhone I owned), so what are some of your (members) opinions on WHY you want to flash a custom rom?
3. Do you have to put a new rom in or once it's rooted can I simply have it "stock" and have the freedom to delete apps that I don't want on the phone?
If I've offended anyone here I apologize. Searching for answers on the Internet sometimes is a joke. I did find this tool in the developer's section and I know I'd start here (already downloaded and looked it over) [TOOL] HTC One X (Evita) All-In-One Toolkit V1.1 [10-28-12] [PERM ROOT][Noob-Proof]
but I feel there is a bit more that I'm missing.
I don't want my hand held but rather to allay any fears of turning my phone into a relic, rather than a useful device. I'm about to graduate with a computer support degree, so some of this real heavy duty stuff isn't exactly taught to us students.
I'd appreciate any advice and help from you all and thanks for having a source filled with so many helpful individuals and information
Thanks in advance,
Jon
This is where you should start (my index thread): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
1) Rooting will enable you to uninstall bloatware.
2) Reasons for flashing custom ROMs are many. Yes, the phone is very fast. But believe it or not, there are some that want to squeeze even more performance out of the device. Custom ROMs will often include tweaks to improve speed, but also memory management (multi-tasking). Some people like the vanilla (no Sense) look of AOSP ROMs. And also AOSP based ROMs feel more fluid in the launcher, as well as some apps run faster. Custom ROMs have some cool features that don't exist on stock: Extended Quick Settings, Advanced Power Menu, Paranoid Android settings, theming support and much more.
3) You can just unlock the bootloader and root without flashing a custom ROM. If you aren't too familiar with flashing custom ROMs, this may in fact be a good place to start. Become familiar with what root gives you, before flashing ROMs.
The all-in-one tool you mentioned is correct if your phone is on the 2.20 firmware. If it happens to be an earlier firmware, use the corresponding root method as indicated in my index.
2. It's like buying a new Dell or HP Laptop. It comes with tons of random crap pre-installed that you don't need. Sure, the computer might already be "fast", but you can always make it faster by uninstalling said apps. However, there are usually tons of them, and they're deeply embedded into the OS. Even if you go into add or remove programs and uninstall all of the apps that they have given you, there's usually still random crap installed... You might want to start fresh - I always do. So, when I buy a laptop the first thing I do is install windows manually and download the newest and updated drivers. Now the machine is fast. :good:
This is the same principle for your phone. This is why people want to install a custom ROM (like CleanROM) that doesn't include any of the carrier crap and is just a fresh, base install.
3. You could, if you really, really wanted keep the AT&T stock ROM on there... but there is no reason to. If you installed something like CleanROM it is already optimized, and you can select what stock carrier apps you want included during the installation. The defaults will leave you almost perfect though... This could be thought of as doing a fresh windows install to remove all that crap they embedded deep into the OS. There are no flashy lights, it is just a base ROM that's optimized for speed, performance, and stability.
So.. there is no reason to use a stock ROM vs CleanROM.
On stock vs. ROM:
I am stock/rooted on my Nexus 7 because it's already vanilla Android, and I haven't seen any need to soup it up.
Stock Sense, on the other hand, has a lot of annoying elements that HTC built into it for various reasons: patent disputes, branding, stability, etc. Most or all of this can and should be removed. One example: You may be used to, in iOS, clicking on links and having apps open up. Stock sense won't do this because Apple sued HTC over it. Removing this limitation is easy. Another is the gimped multitasking that HTC set up to prioritize Sense over everything else. And since Sense is still bloated, this greatly limits multitasking. For the most part, CleanROM is Sense with all this unnecessary crap removed.
I was where you are back in May when I got this thing, and I'm happy as a clam on CleanROM.

I've actually bounced around from CleanROM, ViperXL and other custom ROMs, as well as stock rooted ROMs. I've spent a good amount of time on Asian and Euro stock ROMs, with bloat frozen (in Titanium, not even removed), and the difference in performance (speed) between these and custom ROMs is negligible, if any. Maybe memory management is better on the custom ROMs, but its never been as much of a peeve to me, as others here.
While its true that the AT&T stock ROM has lots of bloat, and some things stupidly removed (FM radio, flashlight, WiFi tethering), but its really not bad. And the stock ROMs from Asia and Europe are quite good.

Just AT&T stock has the HTCLinkify crap. Links work fine on stock ROMs for any other carrier, AFAIK.
It appears I should simply unlock and root. I like how some are saying do that too "get acquainted" with the process and the feel of moding. I believe that is what I'd like to do first.
So in the tool for 2.20 firmware, twrp is in the data file already from the download? I had to go their site and read about what it was. I just don't want to start off on the wrong foot.
You've all been nice to me, even though I'm a flaming noob to unlocking/rooting. I figure to prevent myself from being stupid later, I should be smart now. Hahaha.
I greatly appreciate all the insight and advice so far.

CleanROM is still on 2.29. There have been a lot of firmware versions since then. Germany and Asia are on 2.4x.
2.29 wasn't bad. But its basically the same as 2.20 stock, just without AT&T's meddling. I wish scrosler would use a newer base (as Turge and Xs have). But it seems his time is divided nowadays.

Its really up to you in the end. There is no right or wrong answer to "should I flash a custom ROM or not".
I personally spent some time stock rooted on my first Android device (Desire Z) before I became comfortable with what features I wanted in a ROM. So that's probably why I'm recommending to do the same.
The suggestion by others to try CleanROM is certainly not a bad idea, either. As mentioned, its mostly stock, but cleaned up. My point is simply, don't go flashing ROMs just because people tell you "you just gotta do it man". And flashing ROM is not for everyone, either. If you do it, you should do it because it fits your needs and wants. And it sounds like you need some time to decide what those needs and wants actually are.

OK. I got the noob proof tool but I'm a bit confused on TWRP. I'm just confused exactly on what my first step should be and if the noob proof tool contains all the things I need. Again, sorry for sounding like a dimwit (now I do) but I also watched the video Hasoon2000 posted, just to give me an idea of what to do.
1. Do I being by shutting phone off and holding power button/low volume button first? (DFU mode for iPhone I remember) and then clicking step one?
I also joined HTCdev since I saw you need a token. Could this be explained a bit more?
Sorry guys for sounding so stupid but I'd really like to do it the right way and learn more and more about this (like I did with jailbreaking).
I appreciate all the advice

I was in the same boat as you about a week ago when I first got my HOX. I lurked and lurked and read myself to death until I finally got to where I am now (with CleanROM). Almost bricked my phone because of my haste to root and unlock but what you are doing is good, taking care of the necessary steps. It seems like you haven't unlocked your bootloader? If not look at this thread, it has all the steps you need to unlock the bootloader as the 2.20 firmware we have requires a special method.

I actually agree with what you said about my OP. I jailbroke my iPhones with ease but coming here to Android was a complete night and day difference. It's clearly not the same at all. This is more difficult by far. But after looking at tons of threads, asking questions and assuring myself I can do it, I unlocked and rooted a few days ago. Went pretty much without a hiccup. For now I'm staying stock rooted and exploring the phone. I'm already itching for a Rom but that can wait.
I do feel bad for some people that post here without searching for threads pertaining to rooting but I think it's in how you ask and come off here.
Did you use the all in one toolkit? Did you use it to flash your Rom as well?

I'd say I spent 1-2 hours a day for a week reading these forums before I rooted. And went perfect when I did. Haven't had a glitch or a hiccup yet

Did you flash a rom or are you still stock rooted?

Check sig lines. Most regulars list what they're running there.
