[Q] Speaker Gets Muffled When Phone is Placed on Desk? - Motorola Atrix 2

When you place the Atrix 2 on a flat surface, like a table for example, does it heavily muffle the audio coming out of the loudspeaker?

Not at all. I listen my music heavily and actually find it better to be layed on a flat surface . Like it reflects the music towards you

The Thunderbolt mod I want??!?

Ok so I have only had my Thunderbolt for 26 hours but the kickstand is just a total utter joke! At first I was shocked and appalled that they would design the kickstand so you couldn’t use it and have the USB plugged in at the same time. As bad as that is I don’t really see myself using the kickstand that much…
But it covers the speaker!!?!?! Who designs a speaker and then says... “Ok let’s put a flush tight steel plate over the top of it”?!?!?
It clearly muffles the sound in all uses of the phone. Even if you can hear ok you know it will sound better if the kickstand is out. So I’m walking around talking on speaker with the kickstand out! Watching YouTube with the kickstand out! Just a joke!
So the mod I want is to be able to remove the kickstand all together. I can’t wait for the YouTube video that shows me how to take my phone apart so I can get that dumb piece of steel out of the way!
Hahaha +1
I totally agree with you, that kickstand/USB design is FUBAR! I can't believe someone signed off on that. And then, as you said, someone was brilliant enough to put the speaker behind it! It almost seems like a cruel joke!
OK I just did the magnet test on that dumb piece of metal and its aluminum… Same thing… I want it off of the front of my speaker!
you know you can stand it up with the kickstand and charge at the same time right???
i agree with the speaker thing...had to do a double take to see if they really put the speaker there...doesn't bother me anymore tho
And everyone was like “yeah stay away from Motorola and Samsung... HTC’s quality and designs are just so much better…”
And here it is, their flagship phone (for a few weeks) has one of the stupidest design flaws I could ever dream up!

Yeah you do a lot of video and movie watching with the phone upright do you? Cant wait for the Netflix app so you can watch movies upright???
The kickstand is sweet. Watching movies and tv is so much better. Though I wish the usb was on the bottom of the phone.but then the desk mount wouldn't work...

So even though maybe 5% of Thunderbolt owners have a desk mount you ruin the kick stand… You couldn’t redesign the desk mount to plug-in on a side or have a cable that pugs in on top, or have USB ports on both sides?? This is the flagship phone after all…
And forget all that. So they have to do it that way for the 5% of desk mount buyers and promote people to shell out more money for them... fine.
But don’t cover the bloody speaker with the piece of metal!!
This thread is a joke, if you don't like it the return it.... Don't cry to the masses about it, specially since 90% of people on this particular forum are for this device not against it
HTC made a mistake, so what? This phone is effing awesome and makes up for that and so much more

If you want to use the kickstand and charge at the same time you could use it the opposite way. Let me get my other phone and take a pic real quick.

Here is what I meant. Of course not as stable as the correct way, but it works.
Sent from my DROID PRO using Tapatalk
Heck I cannot even hear a difference in the speaker with the kickstand open or closed. I love the kickstand and I love the way the TB sounds and I've never even needed to charge and use the kickstand at the same time. The OP should have considered this stuff before he bought it if it bothers him so much.
I just pop-in the spare battery....I rock my kickstand to the grave!
Actually a good quick mod for using the kickstand in the opposite way is you could put something on the end of it like a sticky bump thing (sorry didn't know the technical term for that). This will put the device at a more perpendicular viewing angle (albeit viewable) but also by gravity, take less stress off the hinge thus having it not close as easily. Most of the weight would would be distributed across the side of the phone that is touching the table surface. Sorry it is 10 PM in hawaii so I couldn't find a sticky bump thing to explain what I meant so I just leaned it against my old Pre sleeve.

In this case, a picture was worth well over 1000 words...
Yup sorry about that, I kind of just thought of that now. I have been using the original way I posted for a couple days now at work and every once in a while someone would bump the table and the phone would fall backward.
When taking these pictures I wondered why it felt more sturdy in different places on my couch. Then I noticed that the surface on the couch was not flat like a table and saw that the more perindicular angle puts more weight on the phone rather than the hinge. Funny how things turn out sometimes.

I never thought of using it that way, but heck it works.
Two threads down like this exact same thread. Just sayin.
Good idea using it upside-down.

Speaker placement really an issue (kickstand)

So I'm reading around and alot of people are hating the speaker placement on the tbolt. The speaker is placed right behind the kickstand. Personally to me I think it's a great spot. When the kickstand is closed the sound bounces off and projects to the front. I'm not noticing any substantial muffeling that everyone is talking about. The speaker is loud. Great speaker. Anyways what do you guys think about the tbolt speaker placement?
(On a side note worst speaker placement ever on a phone: iPhone series. Put the phone in landscape while playing a game and hand covers up the speaker. Horrible.)
Bounces off it??? It’s down in a crevice!!
Just pick one up and do anything that makes sound and open and close the kickstand... It does not take a rocket scientist to hear that in every single instance of the phone making sounds from ringtone, to speaker call, to YouTube video that the audio is muffled with the kickstand closed!!
It wouldn't sound muffled if you had robot ears!
OK let me rephrase this. Listening to music, playing games etc. Your hand makes a cup shape weather your in landscape or portrait. So if you doing anything with audio the sound is bouncing off your hands to you. It may be in a crevice but it's not air tight. Alot of the sound escapes toward the end of the kickstand. And that gap could possibly act as a cone and speed up the wavelength, increasing volume. But when your wanting to play audio with the kickstand out. The sound is bouncing all over the place. Off the table and kickstand. Giving off a louder sound. I'm just saying it's not the worst design flaw on the phone.
I'm doing a video demo right now... Will post link soon...
Here it is - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1l-9oZAu4w
My 4 year old Nikon Coolpix couldn’t really pick up the stark audio differences…
but they are hugh!
I like the placement.

Only an audiophile would care about the slightly muffled sound, and a true audiophile wouldn't use tiny phone speakers anyway.

See this kind of statement that proves a lot of people here must just be fan boy because it manes absolute no sense. ..
You like the placement? Really? You like that they chose to cover the speaker with a piece of metal as opposed to not covering the phones only speaker with a piece of metal?
So you look at all those other phones out there on the market and say… “Well I don’t know… Looks a little off, for one thing they need to have a movable piece of metal that in almost all uses of the phone is snapped down right over the speaker. “
Or
“Wow… the phone looks ok but that unimpeded speaker looks a little questionable… Better slap a piece of solid metal over it just to be sure… I think for a high end phone that is what you need…”

Is the choir a bunch of people that refuse to acknowledge that the kickstand is a really bad design for two very significant reasons? Because if that’s the case... yes I am preaching to the choir…
But personally all I have seen on here are people that want to pretend that that’s not the case and blindly praise the device just because they have one.
I use headphones most of the time so its not really an issue.

Hey man I'll complain about other things regarding the TB. Lack of aluminum unibody, finicky GPS...when I reboot my TB sometimes it resets my ringtones...occasional data drops. The Speaker?? Sorry man but I love the speaker design. Best speaker I've ever had on a phone. The way they designed it works fantastic for me and I wouldn't change it if I could. I can even put the TB in the car dock and clearly hear the voice turn by turn commands with the window down, that's how loud and clear the speaker is for me. Ringtones and notifications, seinfeld episodes...phone calls on speakerphone all are loud and clear and often I have to turn the sound DOWN. Like I said it's one of the things I would NOT change about the TB. Everything I have described is with the kickstand closed. I do not use my kickstand.

So again... just to get this straight... You would request a solid metal plate tightly fitted over speaker in recessed indention over just a normal speaker... OK. Check.
So why did they perforate the speaker cover underneath the solid metal plate? I guess the engineers determined that the perforated speaker grate covered by the solid metal plate was the ideal config huh? OK cool. I mean if it wasn’t for that kickstand they would have just had the speaker cover be a piece of solid metal by itself... Only because they knew it was going to be covered by another piece of metal most of the time did the decide that it needed to be perforated... ok I get it know.. Makes perfect since!! Damn this phone is high tech!

Yes I did. Long before the TB was released I constantly email HTC and asked for this feature. They honored my request, gave me fantastic audio, and as a bonus irritated the hell out of you.
Sorry dude the speaker works great for me. I thought your video was funny but I don't use my kickstand so the USB placement is not an issue for me.
Why in the hell would I care what they did with the speaker as long as I can hear it loud and clear? The speaker causes no audio issues for me so they are free to cover it with the kickstand if they want to...at least on my phone. Oh and yours as well like I asked them to. If the kickstand affected the audio for me then I would be unhappy.
If you don't like it return it. Period. I have no issues with my speaker. Everyone else I know with this phone don't mind it either. They don't see it as an issue. Your not going to change minds by doing what you're doing. Just return the device and move along. Easy.

Nexus 4 Case for working out at the gym?

Hi all,
I'm looking to see if anyone has any suggestions on a case for my Nexus 4. I workout everyday and with my Galaxy Nexus sometimes the phone would fall out of my pocket when on benches, etc. I don't want that to happen with my Nexus 4 so I'm looking hopefully for a belt clip case. Maybe like a pouch w/ a clip. Definitely something soft on the inside and that doesn't scratch the phone.
I don't want an armband because that plastic cover just destroys your phone, and I don't like the arm bands.
Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!!

There aren't that many accessories particularly cases for the Nexus 4 yet - you'll have to wait a bit or perhaps just invest in a smaller dedicated mp3 player which is what I do.

lol I was afraid that's the case.
I hate carrying around more than just my phone for use cases that are already featured in the phone (i.e music).
Thanks for the reply though.

Has a belt clip and a magnetic cover to hold in place. Also has microfiber on the inside so it won't scratch the phone. The important part here is the headphone jack WILL be accessible while in the case and it won't bend the headset or anything.

I would avoid taking this phone in general into any gym or any serious physical activity, even with a case. Personal opinion.
I know this doesn't address the issue of a Case for the N4, especially one specific to gym type, but have you considered the motoactv? I have been using mine on a daily basis for the past six months for running and lifting. Plus I never enjoyed using any armband of any sort. I really like the clip and the watchband, although I do worry about smacking the glass face into a weight or falling during a trail run and breaking the glass. So far so good.
Besides the motoactv, I do see some gym goers making use of the uh... waist band pack thing, I just see it getting in the way often.
I know its a relatively cheap phone, but i'd prefer not to expose my phone, which I do use from time to time as a phone and put up to my face, to a gym type environment, it just seems to beg for some sort of bad news, be it damage or otherwise.
I use Bluetooth headphones, that way I can listen to music at the gym while my phone is safely off to the side resting on my bag. I used to use an armband, but this is much easier and safer.

Which set do you have?

A Plead to Case Manufacturers

Design a case that has a 'channel' for the speaker. use a little bit of common sense in your design since lg didnt have the sense to design the phone correctly.
channel = put and indentation/recess from the speaker grill to the side and bottom edges of the case so the sound has a decent chance of escaping. or put a 1-2mm hump/bump on the bottom corners of the case to lift it up so the sound can escape.
help a brother out would ya? its prety much a guarantee that the first one to do this will have the most popular case among the n4 and the optimus owners.

i like it being flat. reminds me of my old iphone days. i just wish they would have designed the phone in a way that we can hear notifications when sitting on a flat table. or better yet... the ringtone loud enough to wake me up when i get a phone call. i miss more calls and texts than i ever have.
its all well and good until you miss a home cooked meal because your brand new top of the line phone cannot emit decibels because the speaker is muffled.
i think a properly designed case will get around the issue pretty well. im talking about a recess or a couple of itty bitty bumps on the corners by the way. not a big hump.

most casses cover the 3rd microphone

The 3rd microphone is in the side bump in the camera.. I've noticed all my cases cover that hole..
Surely that reduces the clarity of the microphone when recording video.

Depends how many videos you take that require a microphone.

That is why I check the details of the cases before I purchased them. The ESR Tough Alliance and all of its Note 20 ULTRA cases have a slanted side on the camera side that's actually helpful in capturing audio. The Ringke Fusion X and Ringke Air-S ones have 2mm of space between the camera bump sides.

I think that's necessary because if they don't cover that then the case won't fit snuggly. And that would make the case wobble. I don't see a way around it. May be a cut out of a mm in that place.
mine not covered.... so it is possible
I'm using an Otterbox Defender Pro and the mic is not blocked. There's 1mm or more around the camera assembly and the case.
Bolt cases don't cover the mics...

I use these on my 10+ and love them... very easy to hold and has very good grips. The stand is nice for holding by too.
Make sure the stand is fully retracted or extended though to keep from loosing its hinge pins in your pocket. Happened once but was able to recover them... talk about luck.
Even the official cases cover it. I have the leather and kvadrat cases and they cover that mic. Samsung themselves must think it's not important.

Before suggesting that anyone butcher their case, perhaps its time to see what that mic actually does. It cannot be too important if the official cases cover it, right?
But seriously folks (Joe Walsh pun intended!) that third mic serves what purpose? Video is recorded in stereo which is two discrete (L+R) channels.
What's the third mic for? Could it possibly be used in conjunction with DSP for the (useless IMHO) audio zoom feature? I suppose one could experiment a bit with shooting video and comparing. Even in a somewhat ideal environment for the sake of comparison - dual monitors with 1kHz sine wave playing back, recording and panning back and forth and up and down with no case and with a case that firmly covers the hole. Then play back to compare differences.
Additionally, you could actually WORSEN the effect by trimming or making holes as the surface around the mic opening acts as a pinna (the outer part of your ear) that can really start to do weird stuff with the audio that mic would capture. Still skeptical? Try this once. Take your hands and hold them over your ears but using your fingers like spider legs so your palms are a few cm away from your ears. Do this while there is music playing or people talking. Sounds awfully "tinny" doesn't it?

Oh snap, now you started it. Case acoustic performance ratings.
Guess we need to determine what the ideal length and diameter is for port tuning this mic.
Ok some sarcasm but you do make a valid point.
Just not sure if the Samsung engineers put this much thought into it

Maybe the only function of this mic is that Samsung can say the phone has 3 mics [emoji1787] just to be up

That's for vids, their telescopic audio zoom thing I think.
Or maybe the auxiliary water entry port...

Before suggesting that anyone butcher their case, perhaps its time to see what that mic actually does. It cannot be too important if the official cases cover it, right?
