HELP! I broke GPS, cannot fix it no matter what I try. - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I have a new Tmobile Samsung Galaxy s 4g. When GB came out I updated through Kies air. I rooted it with superoneclick.
I got annoyed with the short text problem, and using Odin put KJ1 modem on. That fixed the texts, but GPS stopped working. So I put KJ6 modem back, and GPS still didn't work. I then used Odin to flash the stock official 2.3.6 ROM and GPS still didn't work.
So I used Odin and put a new root Kernel Voodoo KJ1 on, then used CWM to put Valhalla by whitehawkx on it (Valhalla Final [KJ6 Based][Happy Holidays][12.12.2011]). I followed his instructions to the letter including the factor resets and waiting periods.
So it's running fine with Valhalla, except I still have no GPS! Maps and other location services always say location is unavailable. I downloaded GPS Aids and it can't load the XTRA file, and it shows communications with no GPS satellites.
It all went wrong when I first put that older modem on. Like I said I've since put the KJ6 modem back in and done all sorts of contortions with the ROMs and GPS has never come back since that first time.
Here's my about:
Model: SGH-T959V
Firmware: 2.3.6
Baseband: T959VUKJ6
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKJ6-CL694130
[email protected] #10
Sat Dec 10 22:34:33 PST 2011
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6
Mod version: Valhalla-FINAL
Please, what can I do to get my GPS back?? I don't even care if it's running stock, I'd rather have stock Tmobile 2.3.6 with GPS working than anything modded or even root. I need GPS!!
Is my only option to flash stock GB 2.3.6 back on and take it back to Tmobile for Warranty? It's only a few weeks old. Or is there something I can do to get GPS working again?
Edit: Just for the heck of it, I again flashed the KJ6 modem on using Odin (yes, I clicked Phone) it zipped modem.bin on, I rebooted- and no GPS. Please, someone help me reset the GPS!

GPS Aids has a "hard reset" feature. I'd suggest doing a full backup then using that option. No guarantee but it may help.

Is that only in the paid version? I don't see it.

It's not...hang on, lemme look...
---------- Post added at 05:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:16 PM ----------
Under "Select a Device" choose Other
Click Start Setup
Click "Allow" if prompted by Superuser
Click Finish
Click "Codes.....tools"
Scroll down (no scroll bar, so it's not obvious) and it's just above Factory Data Reset

Thanks, I just tried it. Figure can't break it anymore than it already is. I'm already back on stock 2.3.6 rooted just to remove extra variables. Rebooting now....Wow it cleaned out ALL the modem settings, had to re-register on Tmobile.
OMG THAT DID IT!
I could kiss you. I'm gonna go donate to the maker of GPS Aids right now. Damn I wish I'd done that before I wiped CWM/Valhalla. Oh well

Awesome man, glad you got it working. I'm sure the guy that programmed GPS Aids will be more than happy to know his product helped someone.
Take it easy

wierd. It worked once. So I went and paid for the app. Ran the GPS Doctor thing, told it to Fix Everything, and now GPS doesn't work again.
*sigh*

Doing hard reset again, then not gonna touch GPS Aid if it works.
Each time I do the hard reset, I see something like "Appling CSC" then an error about can't find /system/csc or something similar. I wonder if that's related.

I think I saw the same message on mine when I did the hard reset. I had my phone really b0rked at that point, too.

Broken again. I guess there's something in my Titanium Backup which hoses GPS. I've been restoring after the hard reset and I think the GPS breaks after that. Or I'll just start all over again setting things up. I need my contacts and calendar, supposedly they are sync'd to Google, how do I just sign into that after the hard reset?
ok time to do the hard reset and I'll try to take a picture of the csc error. Wierd that typo "appling" instead of "applying". And I wonder what that csc thing is it can't find...

Solved. Something in my Titanium Backup for sure. I'm just putting apps back one at a time. As far as sync, once I enter my credentials for the app store it automatically started to sync everything else. Did have to re-connect to Tmobile in the APN settings.

Replying to myself here..not so much solved I guess. I updated some of the builtin apps from the market, I restored a bunch of normal apps using titanium backup, checking GPS each time. I didn't use Titanium Backup to restore any system level stuff, just apps and data. Then I studied for a while, came back, and no GPS again. Somewhere I'm debloating something critical for system function inadvertently, or moving something to the SD card that should remain on internal storage. I can't figure out what! Time to hard reset and start over for the fourth time. I wish there were a less time-consuming way to troubleshoot this.

How long have you let it alone after a hard reset before you start restoring anything? I ask because it's possible that it's dying on it's own after a period of time. Maybe hard reset it, leave it for an hour or so, then check the GPS and see if it's functioning. That way you only waste an hour and you're not going through the tedious task of 1x1 restores.

First of all... let me address this before someone rips you apart here. Your question (if it is one) is a bit difficult to read. I am certainly not an english teacher but maybe a period here and there would make it easier to understand. Because I honestly don't know if you are asking a question, stating that you're having a problem with reflashing, going back to factory settings or other. I mean I had to read it 5 times!
Secondly... if you do a factory restore from the settings and you get the flashing android on boot you should let it keep flashing for a few minutes. You need to be patient because it is wiping all of your previous data/settings and restoring them to default.
Third. If it stays on the flashing android for longer then say three to five minutes (depending on how much you need to wipe) then go ahead and boot up in recovery mode and do a wipe from there. If you still get stuck on the flashing android then yes... reflash.
Fourth. Do not assume it is an app that causes this problem unless you are CERTAIN of it. Hundreds if not thousands of people have downloaded this app (including myself) and have not had a similar problem. Maybe do a search for the app name and read what people are saying about it. If it is the app then believe me you won't be the only one commenting. If you're lucky there will be a fix so you won't have to wipe or reflash.
Finally... every so often (especially before making a major change like apps to sd, themes, etc) it'll be a good idea to do a backup with Nand so even if you do end up messing something up (by app or user error) you can always reflash your image to your phone.
Good luck!
EDIT: Whoops! Wrong thread!
I'm very sorry for my poor English but my story is after installing ahome
everything was fine until I rebooted my phone. After rebooting the phone I
tried dialing a number and when I pressed a number once the it would dial
the number twice for example when dialing 7 instead of only dialing the
number 7 it would dial 77, or when using useful switchers turning off the wifi I
would try to check the wifi on but with one push it would check and uncheck
the wifi. Later I did a factory data reset and rebooted the phone I couldn't get
past the flashing android. I reverted back to stock rc33 just in case its a
hardware problem I can let t-mobile know thanks for the replies
i doubt it's a hardware problem.
i had the same problem, coincidentally after installing aHome; i was unable to get past the "flashing android" screen. The first reboot that i did, though, was after using the JF auto-updater app, so i'm not entirely sure where the problem lies.
long story short, i wiped my system, and am now in the process of installing Windows and the Android SDK to my system so i can do a restore.
thanks im gonna go back to root then
yeah, aHome still has lots of thigns to be fixed specially that force close issue every time u return to home :/ i liek dxtop better dont feel like scrolling tru 10 pages like the iphone..

Anybody want to be a guinea pig

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743506
I was wondering if anybody was willing to try this on their captivate and see if it worked for us or any dev's willing to try and port this over to our side.
seems to be working fairly well for them
edit: their hitting 1400+ Quadrant scores and all functions work on their phone from what I see
UPDATE 3:
Tutorial:
-1. Download VibrantDeodexed.zip from thread posted.
1a. Flash stock Odin3 rom. (For the Captivate).
1b. Root
2. Download ROM Manager from Market.
3. FlashClockworkRecovery for Captivate in ROM Manager.
4. Transfer the VibrantDeodexed.zip to /sdcard/ root.
MAKE SURE YOUR ext3 PARTITIONED SDCARD IS INSERTED
5. Reboot to Recovery (in ROM Manager)
6. Install zip from sdcard>choose zip>VibrantDeodexed.zip
7. After it finishes, reboot and be patient. The initial startup takes some time...
Added Fortune090 instructions on how to get this on our captivates. KUDOS to him for testing it out for us
Please note this is still very EARLY and major problems could happen if you do this wrong.
We're not responsible. This is beta
UPDATE 4: I updated the tutorial to a more extensive one, but there is another thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747397
that is more promising, no gps problem. Waiting for an update version for easier install
The Captivate and Vibrant function completely differently as far as those speed fixes go.
Read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740747
I was hitting around 1800 in Quadrant, but the fix wasn't showing any real-world speed increases, and had some bad issues regarding the mic and voice calls, along with wake up lag.
I'm not saying this won't work, but I'm assuming it won't work well or function the same way...
EDIT: Guess I can try it though, seeing as no one else has. Glad my phone's finally communicating with Odin properly so I don't have to worry about the brick I did before... I'll update with any issues.
UPDATE1: Rebooted into recovery and tried to reinstall packages to install the update, and it failed. Trying another one of the methods described to see if they'll work.
UPDATE2: Got it installed (I think), but it seemed to go way too fast and kept going between recovery and rommanager. Phone's loaded and it's running Quadrant now to see if there's any change.... Didn't think so. Still getting in the 900's. Time to continue trying... haha. I originally used Clockwork for Captivate, so that could have been the problem trying Vibrant to see if that'll make a difference...
thanks for the try, I guess we'll just have to wait until something more substantial gets worked up for our side

I'm guessing that you'd have to flash the Vibrant ROM first, and I've known that's caused issues for Captivate users. I'm still trying with the Captivate stock Odin ROM though... Will definitely post if I have any success...
EDIT: I actually think I found my mistake... hold on...
EDIT2: Yes... definitely was a dumb mistake. It's copying the files now. Waiting for it to boot. Was told it takes awhile for the initial boot...
UPDATE: Ok, everything booted up fine, and I can tell this is the Vibrant ROM. The speed fix wasn't applied though. Might be because my external is partitioned with ext4. Could that be the problem? I didn't see any script load that didn't before...
UPDATE2: Reformatted my external to ext3 and got results!!! Quadrant got to 1446! Time to check some real world applications now. (phone call, bluetooth, I know wi-fi works, etc) I'll update with news.
Keep us updated. I don't know if the ROM includes the radio firmware, so make sure to have the stock captivate radio.
I'd love to see a speedtest.net to see if HSUPA works correctly!
Ok wow. I'm impressed. I'm seeing actual speed increases and so far everything is working perfect. No wake up lag, no static in phone calls, Quadrant scores are way up, plus you get some of the advantages of the Vibrant rom without having to flash it. (ie. OPTION to allow non-market apps, unlocked Market...)
So far it's a thumbs up all the way!
Tutorial:
1. Flash stock Odin rom (For the Captivate).
2. Download ROM Manager from Market.
3. Install the Captivate Clockwork for Captivate
4. Transfer the VibrantUpdate.zip to /sdcard/ root.
MAKE SURE YOUR ext3 PARTITIONED CARD IS INSERTED
5. Reboot to Recovery (in RM)
6. Install zip from sdcard>choose zip>VibrantUpdate.zip
7. After it finishes, reboot and be patient. The initial startup takes some time...
8. ENJOY!
Currently working on getting rid of the T-Mobile startups and shutdowns, but that takes no time at all. Thanks for this!!!
EDIT: Problem. GPS no longer functions at all from what I'm seeing. When using my location in Maps, the application freezes... Going to check the *#*#1472365#*#* settings to see if anything there's causing the problem...

Also, Swype FC's after about 3 seconds, but I'm assuming a reinstall will solve the problem... Haven't checked quite yet. Still testing a bunch of things.

WOW, I'm amazed that it works, thats great to here there have been little problems except GPS function. It could be the drivers for vibrant are different for captivate? I'm not really sure I dont know much software but that seems like the most basic explanation I can think of.
EDIT: Did you try deleting the GPS data and starting over from scratch? or gps test from the market? its possible that GPS just needs to reset itself? or something...

Hm, could be possible we need to get the gps stuff from the captivate kernal and not the vibrants?

Alright sweet. Hopefully we see this completely take off. Not using the GPS at all, I'm seriously enjoying it, but I know it's a problem for everyone else.
Sent from my Captivate.
question for reverting back to stock is the same method in the forums? or will it be different
Can you use ROM manager's backups to undo the ROM flash? I want to make sure that I can go back to my stock AT&T ROM after I test out this vibrant ROM.
thats pretty sweet.
just gotta get the gps up and going now.
I'm not sure... When I flash I use Odin.
Another minor bug I've noticed is that with texts, the notification doesn't go away until you clear all notifications. Not TOO big a deal, but it didn't happen with my stock firmware. Might be a Vibrant thing... idk...

[Q] Force Close out of the box!!! What do i do?

If you can get to the factory reset in the settings menu that would the first thing to do. And then check for an update. Make sure you set the wifi to not turn off and I would keep the screen from shutting off while downloading the update. Check in settings "about Device". If your not 3389 or higher then you need to update
I had this problem back in November when I first got my tab. Even though nothing seemed to work right, I was able to connect it to my desktop and push across clockworkmod v .08 and a custom rom. So, I never used the original rom more than 10 minutes.
If you can't get it connected while booted in original rom, then Bekit's NVFLash full restore procedure works really well. Just follow the steps carefully and it's a quick and painless factory reset to a known working rom.
These things are virtually unbrickable (is that a word?).

badfrog is correct. If you factory reset the device it should be fine from there - then you set up your wifi and get the update.
Go into your app drawer and choose Settings. I don't remember if you can do it from the menu button as I'm on a different launcher.
Inside Settings go to Security and select Factory Data Reset. Do this, the unit will reboot and come back up at which point you'll be asked to set it up. It may take some time. Set your Date and Time correctly and set up your Wifi and such.
Once that's done you'll likely get a prompt to update very soon after Wifi connects. DO NOT DO IT, yet.
Within Settings, go into Display and set the Display Timeout to Never.
This ensures that the tablet doesn't sleep or turn off your wifi while it's downloading the update. It's not likely to happen but if your connection is on the slow side and the timeout is set too low, it can mess things up.
Once you've done that, proceed to let the tablet update itself. Again, it may take a bit of time.
Once it's done, make sure you take not of what you have. You'll find this information under Settings in the About section. The last version I got was 3389 - but something newer MAY be there for you. If you get anything less than 3389 then you will have to wait until you get another notification for an update. I don't remember how they work - but I THINK you should get the newest one there.
Once you've confirmed you're on the most current build, It may not be absolutely necessary to do it, but I would factory reset again just to clear the 'gunk' of the older TnT out in case there is actually any.
When I got mine and powered it on the 1st time, I got a bunch of FCs. I powered off and then on, and no more FCs, and it was fine after that. I think I posted asking about that, and someone (roebeet, I think) said it was a known problem. I don't remember the TNT version, but it was the one before 3389, or one before the one before 3389.
Jim
It is a known problem, especially with the older firmware. Sometimes the FC's are so bad that you can't even get into the settings to do a data wipe.
I've actually called CS about this, as an example of why they need an offline updater of some kind to get around issues like these. Suggestion: if you don't want to install clockworkmod, at least try to update the firmware to the latest and greatest, via one of the newer stock ROMs we're retrieved:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842000
That might get you enough access to get into the Settings menu and do the factory restore.

[Q] Lag

I have the charge running FP5 firmware and the Tweaked ROM 3.0.
I've run into a situation where the phone has become rather laggy and buggy.
Example: Click the notification for voicemail...wait 30 seconds and phone dials. or Phone battery dies. I plug it in and it charges up to 30%, then starts getting very laggy and non responsive. I reboot and am told battery power is really 50% and phone is good to go.
I'm used to rebooting the phone at least once a day or more. I'm looking for a way to correct the problems and bring the phone back to how it was when I last upgraded and and loaded the ROM... too bad I didn't backup the phone at that point. Anyways...I know that if I reload the firmware and apply the ROM, everything will work correctly again but I'll spend hours tweaking the settings to add custom ringtones and photos to contacts.
Is there some cache or data I can clear to fix this without clearing everything and starting over?
Mike
P.S. I'm keeping this phone until Verizon allows me to upgrade and keep unlimited data or the phone dies and I have to get another.

You mean Tweaked 3.2, right... if not first upgrade to the 3.2 version of the ROM... it is the current FP5 option.
There is a build.prop thing commented out at the bottom that should force launcher into memory (supposed to help with screen redraw issues, but might also help with general responsiveness). I think you could do it from root explorer, just edit the file, scrool down, read comments, when you find one that sounds like what I said just remove the "#" from the line below it.
re-installing tweaked might really help...
but you might try going into CWM and wiping cache only... NOT data & cache... JUST CACHE... that helped me when i had "funky" things going on on a different device/ROM worth a try.
Finally, you should always take a CWM backup, Nandroid, before poking around....
Also... check swappa for relatively cheap phones with no ties to VZW contract it is where i picked up the GN2 (if it is rooted and you don't want to show it off at the corp store, just call customer support say you are too busy store hours. They will send you the micro/mini SIM via FedEx.
Of course take what I say with a grain of salt... I am just a crazy guy from the internet
(oh great XDA... please correct me if I've misspoken)
Thanks for the info. I never did load Tweaked 3.2. I will put that on the back burner as I don't want to reload all the settings. Maybe I can load it without wiping data. Do you know? For now I will try wiping the cache and see if the phone improves.
Someday I'm gonna have to explore the latest OTA and a new ROM. I'm getting tired of ignoring the update message. either that or learn how to shut the message down. any recommendations on a ROM for the new OTA?

Not sure about a dirty flash... Never tried it. I got turned on to Root and Such well after FP5 and Tweaked 3.2 came out.
If you give it a go... You could retain much via Titanium Backup. Or just send a CWM Backup/Nandroid on the SD Card before playing around.
Either way...
There has to be a proper stop notification how to thread around here somewhere!
Cliffs Notes:
From a Root Friendly File Explorer (Like Root Explorer HERE, it is worth the $)
edit a line in "/system/build.prop"
Find
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/SCH-I510/SCH-I510:2.3.6/GINGERBREAD/FP5:user/release-keys
replace the FP5 with FP8 so it reads:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/SCH-I510/SCH-I510:2.3.6/GINGERBREAD/FP8:user/release-keys
NOTE: BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO HOSE THE PERMISSIONS (If I recall some of the other "freebie" root file explorers break the permissions... Best to find that a real thread with all the details if you are not 100% confident.)
Also feel free to double check my facts... I'm just a crazy guy from the internet!
Good luck!
Edit Alert:
PS. While poking around at the tweaktools back-end, I noticed there were some mods that specifically addressed lag (I have little to no experience with them though... Just FYI...

yes, you can flash tweak 3.2 over 3.0 without wiping data. not sure if it comes with the updated kernel, but I would certainly do that as well.
in terms of lag, try the crossbreeder mod on XDA - worked for my charge!

If I perform a full factory reset of my ROM, will i lose root and carrier unlock?

I didnt root or unlock it myself.... im pretty sure i wiped all data before flashing the rom i have on there now, but i cant remember for sure....
seems to be the only way to truly fix my extremely messed up WIFI situation... (wifi kills my phone completely... regardless of whose internet as i tried my neighbours and got the same error). i did a restore to last year but it only fixed it for a day... if im gonna restore to a year ago again, i figure i may as well do a full fresh install, since its crapping out still anyway
i have something called superuser (i know is root access), and something called stk which ive read is sim toolkit, in "system/app" they are both apk's. "superuser.apk" and "stk.apk"
also, will my custom recovery be gone? as far as i remember that is how i flashed my ROM last time... but its been so long i cant remember...
Let me try helping since myself new on forums:-
There are two types of phone resets available- 1.Factory wipe from settings of phone/from custom recovery (cwm/twrp) or 2.Complete wipe performed such as in upgrading os version of android (like i did lollipop from jellybean). The complete wipe is done in custom recovery only under mounts and advance option in cwm and then wiping cache, system, data and everything else. If you do so,you will be losing everything installed in your phone EXCEPT Root and Custom recovery.
Back to your question, if you perform factory reset,NO,you don't lose root. If you do complete wipe from recovery, still you don't lose root of your phone UNLESS you fix the root on reboot.
Choose the reset carefully before installing any rom, read their steps,if they ask full wipe or just factory reset and dalvik cache.
Hope it helps.

you cannot unroot yourself thru factory reset

Factory reset WILL:
Remove all apps and their data
Contacts that are not on the SIM card
(In some rare cases) Pictures, music...
Factory reset WILL NOT:
Remove carrier unlock
Remove root (but may remove superuser app)
Remove the recovery
In case that superuser app is gone, just install that same superuser app from Google Play and update it if it asks to do so.
Ok, let me ask this, to ask if its even worth me doing....
last night i did the same restore to a year ago... except this time while i still had wifi i had downloaded both avast and AVG
I can with both now, and my phone says its clean...
but yet the problem is recurring now, and wifi, 4g, tethering..... basically any function that connects me to the world outside completely craps out my phone...
i thought the restore, and especially he restore and downloading antivirus would fix it, or at least be able to tell me WHAT the problem is... avast will scan the wifi network, but of course this test now freezes up just the same cuz it has to turn on wifi to do so.... while it was still working this test did execute just fine with no errors....
its as soon as internet is connected... for 3g or even my router, it will read it without the internet feed plugged in. but plug that in and it all goes to crap again. Id just hate to do a full fresh install just for it to all go to crap *again*....
ive scanned all computers on the router and those come back clean/no viruses... i tried i different router with internet, same error. i tried the neighbours connection.... same thing again.
this is really baffling.
so i feel more comfortable doing a factory reset....... but i guess im wondering is will it help me??? at all????
whatever this is is clearly not an infected device as some on another forum had thought.... something *else* is going wrong....

Factory reset fixes all problems that were not made with root. You will not lose root either. For a total fix just wipe everything and reflash rom.
Right now im trying a different router, which doesnt have any windows XP machine plugged into it, and i made it extremely secure. even changed the default username and password to get onto the router itself (never bothered with the other one, the one i had been routinely using)... I did a complete reset of this router before even connecting to it with my phone, after it was secured. the other regular one still has everything else connected to it. this one is literally a separate connection, which i named "phone test" lol.
if it makes no difference, total fresh install is my last resort. if it *does* make a difference however... then something in my other regular router is messed up that cause my phones connections to freeze up - but that avast or AVG wouldnt detect (thats the only weird part)...
i even did a scan of my external SD card the other day, thats clean too.
time will tell, im approaching the 24 hour mark with this new setup. if by tomorrow its freezing up again, its not the router. but if its still working, ill have extreme suspicion that it was in fact, the router, probably something dealing with my XP machine thats plugged into it (well, normally anyway).
Time will tell...
im also trying to remember which apps i had updated before any problems started in case there are any corrupted updates i installed, without knowing it. (legit from play store, but still, ive heard that doesnt always mean totally safe, cuz anyone can make them)
Dude, wipe data, cache, system, reflash rom on your phone. BUM, problem fixed.
I still may, but i wanted to play around with the routers first to see if i could fix the problem.... that way id know i wouldnt be fully wiping for no apparent reason. if in a week or so things have been fine and i try connecting to the old regular router... than ill know its something on there infecting my phone... id rather not have a fresh install crapping out on me.
You can do a nandroid backup and then reflash everything. That way if you screw something up or the problem is not fixed you can restore in minutes.
