[Q] Download mode after soft-brick, now what? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I searched thoroughly before making this post, but I am a noob at this so I may have missed something relevant. Please don't get mad at me if I did!
Basically: I attempted to flash a custom ROM, intending to use clockwork mod. However, when I got to the step after rooting where you reboot the phone and put it into recovery mode to get into clockwork, I realized that no combination of button presses was working. Yes I know I was a fool not to check first to make sure I could get into recovery mode, but I didn't know and I'm new at this.
It was soft-bricked (stuck at samsung screen), so I got a jig and using that I can now get into download mode ONLY. I have scoured the internet and tried using KIES and Odin to get it working (I don't care if it's with a custom ROM, stock firmware, whatever, I just want a functional phone at this point), but I'm having no luck getting any of the numerous tutorials I've tried to work.
Before it became soft bricked it was running froyo (I believe 2.2, but I'm not positive).
Can someone please walk me through whatever the easiest way is to get functioning firmware of any type onto my phone, or direct me to a tutorial that will help me?
I appreciate any help, VERY MUCH. Thank you in advance.
EDIT: Also, the most recent tutorial I tried was this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853950
But when I run Odin I get this:
<ID:0/016> Odin v.3 engine (ID:16)..
<ID:0/016> File analysis..
<ID:0/016> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/016> Can't open the serial(COM) port.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

Are you saying odin is not working for you?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium

Yes, Odin is not working for me. It recognizes my phone, but I can't get it to do anything. I'm not sure if I'm loading the correct firmware or making some other mistake, but thus far I feel like I am following the tutorials I've tried to the letter with no luck.

You do know that the thread above is NOT for this phone?

Okay, just to be clear you are attempting to load Galaxy S 4g software onto a Galaxy S 4g, correct?
I noticed that latest tutorial you posted was for the i9k which is nowhere near the same and in fact result in such errors if software from the i9k were to be loaded onto our phone.

If you want kj6 stock (latest stock), then run the same one click with kj6 from kies http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
The first click of "flash" writes just the rom, click "flash" after going back into download mode again to get bootloaders.
Then odin kj1 kernel with the odin link from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032
I'm planning on making an alternative one-click with the kj1 lagfix+cwm kernel with kj6 stock rom soon. So you have one-click to an install with cwm.
EDIT:If you have a problem getting into Download mode, you might want to shop around for a usb jig for the sgs4g. If that doesn't help they also provide unbricking service.

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A

you can do it.. just keep trying to put ur phone into download mode it happen to me... just keep trying and try different ways of doing it. after awhile i should work.. then odin with kd1 and start back from square one.. i been there if anything pm me.

So I just used it and it started going but then said "local and device PIT files don't match" and ended the session. Does that mean that my phone is not a Galaxy S 4G after all? If it's not, how can I tell which type of Galaxy S it is?

Bricked Galaxy s 4g WITH vibrant rom, need PIT file..HELP!

Hi Guys, i cant seem to find the PIT file. I finally realized after 4hrs of searching, that i used the wrong files. It's confusing because they dont separate the 3g and 4g in the WIKI. Can anyone help? Please???
p.s. i already downloaded the TAR file for the 4G, but i had already repartitioned and uploaded the wrong PIT file. THANKS!
looks like we may be in the same boat..... are you getting odin to load about 95 percent of the way before it shows the big red fail? .. i'm not too confident of a pit file that works for us anytime soon.

If you have that option, I think you can try Krylons flashable KD1, people are mentioning there are issues, but it might bring you to a state where you can flash back to stock.
I'm pretty sure that's the one I tried.. but I'll check. If it is.. when I load it in CWM it said "Mounting mounting points" .. status bar was going for about a minute then it said it completed the update... but I just get boot loop after that. I'm assuming the rom really isn't getting on there.. maybe just mounting?
HAHA, my thread got hijacked, but it's all good as long as someone gets help. No Richie, i don't, so i guess i am more screwed. I have a developer friend i am going to reach out to. *sigh*.

Yeah I have never used a PIT file for the SGS4G to flash builds. They flash fine without a PIT.
Its not needed if you never used one.

[REQUEST] Boot.bin & Sbl.bin Files

Does anyone happen to have the correct boot.bin and sbl.bin for the Galaxy S 4G? I'd love to have them if so and I know some of the DEV's here most likely have an ODIN package with them. I promise I would search for them but we all know that it's impossible to know what's in the ODIN package without downloading then looking inside it, or someone stating what's in it. I'm looking for good files to flash after JTAG sessions on the Galaxy S 4G.
Thanks!
this is from KC1, but should still work.

Wow this may be a huge help. Ok I've seen it said both ways but do you have a T959V pit? I'm going to be using heimdall and would like to use these but as you probably know the pit is required to repartition. I'm working with a T959V that I jtagged back to life but had previously been flashed with T959 firmware and surprisingly that has the partitioning all haywire.
Ok I confirmed that those are the correct boot.bin and sbl.bin files. Now I think if I could get a hold of a decent pit file I may could get this up and running.
the only one I have is a bad on. LOL
BUT, I know there is a way to make one from the phone. I'll have to look to see how the SK4G guys did it.
They are probably just dumping the bml partition that stores the pit. Thanks for the info though so far!
Alrighty I successfully produced my own PIT file and hex edited to ensure it was about the same as a typical one as there is a lot of extra gobble that must be removed with a hex editor from the dump file. I loaded it up into ODIN and flashed some old KC1 firmware and bam! Back up and running with correct partitioning!
Do you think you could make us a working .pit from it?

Said and done. It worked beautifully on the customer's SGS4G that I hard de-bricked and should for any DEV or enthusiast if needed. Remember, there is no need to use a PIT file unless you are having partitioning problems.

yea, I apologize. right after I hit the post button I realized I had posted it in the wrong one. Is there a certain person who is supposed to fix that or can I do it?
and as for the reply above asking "wont the stock odexed roms do this"? they might but I have never been able to push the correct file to system/bin to fix the clockwork recovery so I cant even get in there to flash any different rom. I have been researching for a few hours and I think I can undo everything in superoneclick.

You *SHOULD* be able to get away with the KG2 ROM which T-Mobile sent OTA to the Sidekick a few months ago. You can get that and the PIT file required to flash it back via ODIN here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186954
*DISCLAIMER* I'm not responsible for anything you do or do not do here or any negative outcome. Of course, I'm happy to take the credit if everything turns out just peachy.

The link works fine, you can flash the KG2 one linked above this post or the KD1 version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088413 . Follow the instructions, then once you use ODIN to get back to stock you can return the phone as it is. It'll be just like the software was never manipulated.
Also, i'll be moving this thread to the general section by the end of the day. If you havent responded yet i'll PM you to see if you still need help.
Immediate action required
Yeah, lolzy title.
I soft-bricked my SK4G trying to flash a custom ROM without making any backups or checking anything prior.. and I suffered.
I have ODIN and the sk4g.pit file, a good USB connection with stock cable and I cna get into download mode. Everything is looking really good, except MegaUpload and MultiUpload are down thanks to our guys up in the White House.
So, my (really desperate) question is, can anyone give me a working link to either KD1OdinSTOCK.tar or KG2OdinSTOCK.tar ? Even if it's .tar.md5, as long as it is the file I need to flash back to factory firmware, I'll love you forever. Been looking for 2 days already =\

EDIT: I found a firmware that seems to be the latest for SK4G, Looks like the tag is "KH1" Rather than KD1 or KG2.
androidwaptoday.blogspot.com/2011/10/stock-rom-t839uvkh1-221-for-samsung.html
I've downloaded it but I can't get into the .tar without a password? Is this normal for android firmware or is something wrong?
I'm also curious if I can odin my phone with this file rather than the other 2 mentioned above. Thanks again!
I also need the KD1 or KD2 firmware... it would be very helpful if somebody could post a working link!!! Ive been looking for 3 days haha
Help would be greatly appreciated!
Souldrainer, I think I may have found newer firmware. It looks legit and is from SamFirmWare.
http://hotfile.com/dl/145788939/08a9a06/SGH-T839_T839UVKH1_TMB.zip.html
That is the address to the file itself. If that does not work, look up "T839UVKH1" on SamFirmWare.com.
To get the password to open the file, you'll need to sign up on their website (free)
as far as I know, it contains everything KD1 or KG2 firmware would, and is newer. I believe you odin your phone with this program. I'm about to... as soon as I can get odin to recognize my phone.
the reason why i wanted it was because in case i did something wrong with CWM, because i cannot put the recovery file in with KJ2, i wanted something i could rely on to back it up because i can't make a nandroid backup..
I rooted the phone but it wont let me put in the recovery file, and when i try to boot into recovery i get the stock recovery, am i supposed to use the update.zip file that i got? cuz im not sure if it would work with KJ2.
and thank you for the file!!! i shall check it out xD
I believe the reason you're not going to CWM Recovery is because theres a binary file you need to edit since the SideKick has a faulty Recovery file.
http://www.simply-android.com/discu...work-mod-recovery-for-t-mobile-sidekick-4g/p1
If I'm not mistaken, the edited binary file can be found here, and that will allow you to boot into CWM Recovery. Be sure to back up the files just in case. And on the site it tells you to overwrite (still back up) so overwrite, and do not replace or rename. Hopefully that'll help!
yea but it wont let me replace the file, it keeps saying file already exists or that i cant do that

If you are rooted, you have to make sure that the system partition is mounted as readable/writable (r/w) before you attempt to replace the recovery binary file.
The easiest way to do that is download ES File Explorer from the market, then go into settings and scroll all the way to the bottom. Select the check box for "Root Explorer" ; then, check the box for "Mount File System". You will get a superuser warning prompt- "Allow" it.
Now go follow the process to overwrite the recovery binary and you shouldn't have any problems.
--Finally, make sure that you ALSO have the update.zip on your SD card and boot into recovery. You will end up seeing the stock recovery-select "reinstall packages" and voila... you should be in CWM.
The password is "samfirmware.com" without the quotes (simple google search).
So I also have this file (T839UVKD1) sitting on my hard drive waiting to find out: is this safe to use?
I don't care if it's new or old, it's the only .tar related to the SK4G that's downloadable and it just needs to work.
I just don't understand why no one will simply post T839UVKD1 or T839UVKG2 for those of us who need it (is it a bandwidth thing?), everyone just wants to say, "just go to here/this post," where all the wonderful instructions are that can help me save my phone, but where the links are dead (megaupload and multiupload are down, as we all know, so the files are unattainable) so we download Odin or Heimdal and the .pit file, but are stuck because: no .tar.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
T839UVKD1 SHOULD be safe to use proving the file you have is not corrupted, you can use it for Odin. if you wouldnt mind posting it i would really super appreciate it!

[Q] Download mode but unable to unbrick

Just what everyone wants.... another thread about a bricked phone.
I have no idea what happened to my phone.... I have been running Valhalla Final for a week now with no issues to speak of and lost all my ringer tones after a failed attempt to put sound on a boot-loader using Absolute System. I rebooted into recovery and tried to restore my nandroid which failed when it said unable to unmount system. when I rebooted it had fc in android.core multiple times so I rebooted again and after it loaded had no control. did a battery pull and then would not go past the power up screen. downloaded heimdall one click file T959V-UVKJ6-One-Click.jar and put it into download mode. flashed and it went fine until factoryfs failed. now still in download but img is pic of phone to computer. last 2 attempt was
SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar and it failed first at loading the modem and then at loading recovery.
I am lost. seems like everything I try makes it little worse. Have not tried ODIN yet.
Is there any hope or am I out a phone?
Give Odin a try. Last time I used Odin it froze so I pulled the plug, and when I put my phone back in download it showed that same screen, yet Odin still went through.
So no, that screen doesn't mean you're out a phone.

Grab chadster's KG4 here. I believe it has ODIN 1.85 included in the file. Don't mess with any of the check boxes in ODIN; let ODIN decide what to check.
After that, you should be able to get back to KJ6 via a one-click.
Shady grab Ravers stock GB and honks GB odin kernel. Flash Ravers, If you can, then honks. That will give you stock plus cwm. You know where to go from there. Funny thing is just yesterday FB had a post about leaving BOOTLOADERS alone w/o unbrickable mod. Good luck.
Downloading now from sendspace.com
I'm hoping this works...

shady
Are you going with the chadsters leak or ravers stock?
I don't know why you guys keep recommending old (leaked) ROMs to debrick with.
@Shady if you see anything posted by myself, dsexton, bhundven or raverx3x you can bet that we've tested it extensively and that it'll work on your phone.
On that note I recommend you read the whole page here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
Download from the SMS KJ6 (beta2d) Kernel Stock Rom with Bootloaders link. This will get you a one click flash solution that you can go back to when you have problems. This, unlike the KG4 file others have been recommending, is the latest version of gingerbread (KJ6 is 2.3.6) and you'll have a custom kernel + root to boot so you can get flashing other gingerbread ROMs. I hope you don't have trouble flashing, and if you do, read the OP to what I linked you to. All the instructions are there.
I know this file has been failing for you but you can try restarting your computer and flashing it from safe mode. When your computer is booting up, keep pressing F8 until you get a menu. Pick "Safe mode with networking" from the menu using your arrow keys and press enter.
sorry too many tabs open

Only because he was failing with one-clicks and wanted to use ODIN. That one (KG4) has always worked for me, so I was basing it off of experience. Never claimed it was optimal

Never thought about trying it from safe mode. Nice idea.

That's what I'm saying. I don't use heimdell(because my computer hates it for some reason). So ravers stock GB and honks kernel to get cwm works well to set me back up.

oh after they say to flash the bhuvden kernel well that is what they told me to get rid of gremlines or something, then flash the custom rom, youll have cwm and such, tell me how it goes .
To all of you thank you very much for your help... I think I have my phone back.... Our fembot Linda is doing her thing right now...
@FB I tried one click method in safe-mode and it was unable to find the drivers even after reinstalling a few times.. restarted in normal mode and gave it one more shot and I now have my phone back.
Thanks again for all the help.

I totally forgot he made a stock ODIN. My bad!
I really need to rewrite the starter pack to have heimdall one click instructions. Nobody ever got around to making it.
I've only given the guide a cursory look at times, but I'd be willing to draft something for the guide if thst helps keep you focused on developing.

A video would be perfect. Been busy with school since I just started and now I got a gig making a website so I'm also working on that.

I've never done the video thing. Guess I can research it and give it a go.

Ok, so what is Odin doing here?

Hey all,
I'm sorry, I really thought I'd studied stuff about how to root, and yet I find myself stalled on the very first step with Odin.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4G Wind (SGH-T959W). Odin is just sitting here doing nothing, apparently, with the stock+voodoo kernel.
* The phone IS in download mode
* I didn't directly install the Galaxy S drivers because previously I had Kies on my computer (in brief: had a Galaxy S II, lost it, later uninstalled Kies) and since I've been able to access my Galaxy S without any problem via USB, I assume that's fine eh?
* I have Odin3 v1.70 on my machine and ran it
* I select the stock+voodoo kernel file and... hit start... and very little happens. The phone DOES NOT REBOOT.
* Actually, I think I hit Start before I'd confirmed download mode on the phone by hitting upvolume, so I hit upvolume and clicked on Start again
* What the hell am I doing wrong? Has just doing the above screwed things? Is nothing going on? (This seems more likely) Of course I don't want to do anything with the phone or with Odin until I know how to proceed.
Apparently I can't post a link to the screenshot that I made of Odin, so I'll just have to describe what I see:
- the row of large white cell at the top is blank
- on the ID:COM line, the first cell says 0:[COM3] and the background is YELLOW
- I have files (PDA) checked and selected stock+Voodoo-T959VKJ1.tar
- the log reads as follows:
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
<ID:0/003> Added!!
<ID:0/003> Removed!!
<ID:0/003> Added!!
Postscript: I guess I didn't have all the drivers installed or something... strange. I re-installed them (it said they were on my PC), then ran Odin again, and now it's in process.
you have a t959W,
this kernel is first of all, very outdated, you should use KJ6.
Second it is designed for t959"V".
The compatibility with the other Galaxy S 4G branches is unknown. If it flashes, it may have deep idle issues causing horrible battery life. But if you absolutely want to flash it, use a a newer version of ODIN(1.85), or use heimdall. Search for them in xda search. I suggest Heimdall.

Oh, right. I have since updated to KJ6 (sms-T959V-KJ6-v0.1.1-rc1-unsigned-update.zip). (and just now to 0.2.0) For some reason the guide I found suggested updating to the KJ1 first just to get CWM, and then update to KJ6. *shrug* Maybe it was a noob's guide and that was unnecessary?
I honestly don't know where I go from here. Baaaby steps...

Right - happily, that's because bhundven determined that they are essentially the same devices. I would never have tried to update ANYTHING without his work. (Paranoid about breaking my phone.)

Thanks very much for your post! For starters I'm going to grab (edit) Heimdall.
Yes but the dma issues and deep idle will still make your battery pretty terrible. Like he said, there are some different bugs, and they have different kernel source.

Yup, use heimdall. Odin is closed source badness. It's fine for flashing full stock roms... on winblows.
I've never had a problem with heimdall.
I have had problems with bad usb cables and usb ports on my computer that have gone bad. So bad that I had to get a new computer.
OK, I thought that it'd cause issues.
