Hi
I am new here and need your help..This is my first post and sorry to bother you.
Finally I made up my mind and decided to buy a cellphone with android system.
I will go for T mobile in Lexington Kentucky as I can't afford other networks .. I will go with the prepaid service with them (the 30$ plan for 100 min talk, unlimited text and unlimited data up to 4G first 4GB)....
So I will choose a device that should have the 3G bandwidth containging the 1700 mhz (right ?) to be compatabile with T-Mobile...
Now , I will choose a Smasung android cellphone . My choices are narrowed down to the :
Samsung Nexus S (GT-I9020T)
or
Samsung Galaxy S 4G (SGH-T959V)
My wish list for a device is
1.Must be a Samsung
2.Must have a good camera (5MP+ and decent Video recording) and brilliant display (4inches+) Amoled
3.Flash player support
4.Fast CPU
5.Not an old platform
6.Bluetooth and WiFi
7.Must be compatabile with 3G T-Mobile
these points are so important , the others
8.Preferably Gingerbread system
9.Preferably open device , like the generic Nexus S , not bound to a network
10.Not more than 450$ budget ...
I can get the Nexus S (original unlocked, generic GSM) around 420$ or the Galaxy S 4G T959V around 360$...Galaxy SII is far expensive for me
Now I am confused , the Samsung Nexus S has many of my good features , but it has weaker video than the Galaxy S T959V (WVGA vs 720pHD) and no 4G but has preinstalled Gingerbread , The Galaxy S 4G has a good video recording and 4G and cheaper but no Gingerbread (it has Froyo 2.2) and has to be unlocked ..... Now I am confused again
** Is the Gingerbread very imp and much better than Froyo ?
** I know there are methods for updating to Gingerbread , but I like preinstalled factory stuffs so I would not mess a thing trying to reach that purpose
** Should The Nexus S get updates directly from Samsung online on my PC and fast ? I can use PC stuffs so easy
** Is there any other device you recommend that meets my criteria ?
** I was thinking about the Galaxy Plus I9001 but discovered it's not compatavile with T mobile...
Please your comments are apreciated ...
Thanks
By far the Nexus S is the best that you can get right now. But your price seems a lot. Check out Craigslist. I've seen new Nexus S's for about 300.

Nexus S. Blows this phone away by far. No question.

I would say nexus s. And that price seems very high.

Because with the SGS4G you're on Samsung's leash.
You need Samsung for updates. This phone doesn't even have a 100% stable GB yet... And ICS is looming. Thus, you can pretty much throw the idea of Samsung ever updating this phone to ICS.
That's why NS is best. It's fast, no bugs, has flash camera, and every ROM is stable on it. Hell, even their ICS SDK ROM is a daily driver...
I've always regretted not getting the NS. But the MT4G was almost just as good, but traded it for this G2x.

I went from the Galaxy S 4G to the nexus S last week and let me tell you it was a great decision. Don't get me wrong the Galaxy S 4G is a good phone but it doesn't beat the nexus S. And since the nexus S has been confirmed to get the Ice Cream Sandwich update it gives the nexus s a good edge over other phones. The nexus s does not have a micro sd but it has 16GB built in. the Galaxy S 4G has like 512mb but it does have a micro sd slot. Just something to consider depending how much content your planning on putting on your phone.
Better to remain silent
In #5 you want "not an old platform" Wait 6 months and you will find yourself on an "old" platform. When I received my brand new S4G last week (a device introduced a year ago?), the OS was already "old," running Froyo 2.2.1, and the hardware was surpassed by devices introduced in the past 3-6 months, like the Nexus S. Does this mean the S4G is crap? Not for me. I got this device and a second one free, along with free activation, for locking into a 2-year contract. ($450 will cover 3-4 months of my contract). I know I will need a phone for the next 2 years and beyond, the choice of providers will decrease by 1 within the next 12 months, and the usage (contract or month-to-month) prices are what the prices are. I am in Chicagoland and my 4G coverage is excellent, wifi/wifi calling has worked for me at home and here at work, the screen is crisp enough to watch clips without thinking "this is crap" when I am idling someplace. I have upped the OS to very stable Gingerbread 2.3.6 thanks to the developers who post here. Will ICS bring me unicorns and rainbows? Maybe, but I hate unicorns and only double rainbows get a rise out of me. So, is the Nexus better than the S4G? Probably. But like someone said "Just wait for another newer phone..."

search the forum, there are so many other threads about this.
you're on the Nexus S forum, so the biased majority is going to say "yes" and the trolls who come to the NS forums to flame are going to attempt to bash it.
In the end, it's really your decision.
nexus s is a nice device. i personally do not like samsung phones and prefer htc but the nexus s is a nice device with many features. id like to try it for a month to see how that curved glass is.
many variables to weigh, cost, carrier, plans, etc. the nexus s will put you with at&t or t-mo. have you considered the samsung galaxy s 4G with t-mo?
good luck!

Galaxy S 4G is a nono. It's pretty much a Vibrant + FFC (Mod can apply FFC to Vibrant) + 4G
Like I've said in all the other "Nexus S vs <X>" threads. If having the latest versions of Android is something you want, a Nexus device will fit you perfectly. Kernels etc will be open sourced asap.

i dont think that necessarily means that the galaxy s 4g is a no-no. i wouldnt buy it because i havent liked a sammy mobile device since my sch-a530 but dude is right though, if you want the latest android version before anyone else...get the nexus.

I think it does, it's just revamped and I honestly don't think it's worth $199.99 because of the phones that are going to be coming out this year.
I personally just wouldn't get it because its a 2.0 of a same phone with added some basic features.
4G? Naaw.. I'm not downloading from my phone so I can care less about these speeds. And they're all theoretical.
FFC? Honestly.. I don't ever even use FFC. I have my NS and haven't used it once except day one when i was checking it out within Camera.
Also it is a punch in the face to owners of a Vibrant. Just imagine a week from now Google released 'Nexus S2'.. same phone but added 720p camera and a SD card slot with 4G.
TBH.. The only reason why I prefer Nexus S is because its maintained by Google without relying on manufacturers and carriers adding bloatware onto the phone. It allows the best possible Android experience.
Other phone in mind? T-Mobile G2X (Optimus 2X) -- but its not Stock Experience.
I prefer nexus s coming from a g2 iPhone 4 and "vibrant 4g" I love the way the sns looks its to sexy just my opinion

Well I got a Nexus S and my wife has a myTouch 4G so I can give you an honest answer here.
My wife is using the base stock SENSE rom and she is constantly restarting her phone after heavy usage. (if you flash to like CM7 or one of the mt4g ROMs this probably won't be an issue) We web browser is so much nicer on her's because of the hardware acceleration with flash, I just put flash to load on demand on my web browser and everything is quick. As far as the processor they are pretty much a match yet I have overclocked my Nexus S and it makes her mt4G look slow.
As far as weight the Nexus S is noticeably lighter. The battery life is about the same to be honest, they both have similar battery ratings and I am getting more now since SetCPU tweaks and downclocking profiles when not in use.
Now here in Atlanta, or the area that I live just south of Atlanta, my 3G service keeps up with her in all the 4G areas, are speed tests are about equal. T-Mo just hasn't really got the speeds up down here, but to be honest 4G is really not going to make a huge difference on your phone, maybe if your going to tether in areas with proper HSDA+.
I bought my phone because I wanted to pure android and quicker updates and a device that is more exclusive in my area (my best buy told me that they only sold 15 since they came out). But again if you are going to root and do custom ROMs then you won't have to worry about waiting for updates and such.
They are both great phones, and the Nexus S is going to have its bugs since you get to test the newest releases of android before it really gets mainstream use on other devices.
I had the MT4G for a couple weeks before the Nexus S was released. I have a rooted, overclocked, Nexus S; my wife has a completely stock Nexus S; and my daughter has a MT4G. Both of them count on me to pretty much do all updates, install apps, etc on their phones so I use all 3 a lot.
My phone is the best of all 3. My wife's is the next best. The MT4G has much more lag than the Nexus S due to Sense even though it has more RAM it still isn't enough. The only advantage the MT4G has is during tethering the 4G data speeds are nice, but I rarely tether so it doesn't make that much of a difference.
Here are my opinions on which phone is better in different areas:
1. Hardware quality: Nexus S
2. Speed/lag: Nexus S
3. Data speed: MT4G, but only cell data and not by much
4. Call quality: equal
5. Battery: equal
6. Look and feel of OS: Nexus S
7. WiFi calling: right now only on MT4G
8. Camera: equal
Other features a plus for Nexus: Google updates, no HTC screwing things up. No Sense slowing the phone down. Better screen.
MT4G advantages: Hard buttons vs capacitive (personal preference). LED notification light. 4G.
I am in a similar situation as well, GF has the mytouch4g and I have the SNS. Like brokenwall said, the MT4G gets real slow under heavy use. Battery for me is significantly longer although i dont have setcpu installed, the phone itself has nice power management. Weight of phone is really a personal decison, coming from a HD2, I prefer metal battery covers and the slightly heavier weight of the MT4G but thats just me. One of the big ups about the nexus is it coming already unlocked, of course you can always unlock the MT4G but the SNS has a higher resell value if you ever change your mind
Overall i would recommend the SNS but both phone are nice.
can you guys stop calling the Nexus S a SNS.. it is NS
Nexus One wasnt called GN1/GNO or HN1/HNO.. it was called N1
Nexus s great phone.
Mt4g if you root. And put cm7 or iced glaciar its insane.

I don't know a better place than XDA to ask for some honest opinion.
I am in Canada and used the Nexus S on Mobilicity. LOVE THE PHONE...but traded with my wife because I wanted Rogers 3g since it is much faster than Mobilicity's 3g.
Now I am using the Captivate and love that as well. I will not be buying the 850 band NS since it is not a huge leap from the Captivate.
I am debating whether to get the SGS II (addicted to AMOLED display) or wait for the next Nexus since I am really liking the pure Google experience? I had a great experience with my NS experience and Captivate is serving me fine.

With that given scenario, I would get the S2 unless....... you are really a developer and love jacking around on the phone for discovery sake, me the S2 looks to be the next inline phone for me, But one needs to have hands on first then you can really make a proper decision.
Get the S2 and root it and just put all stock gapps on it.
Agree with the above suggestions
Yup...that is what I am leaning towards. Get the wife the hand bag so she has nothing to say when I get my new SGS II.
Obviously read the hands on review first...
Thanks!

This may not be so. The phone is being locked down - security is a large issue of the phone.
I faced the same situation, but without a phone, so went for the NS because imo as a developer it's better than the SGS II will be. The latter being the same as the NS, just more powerful and with horrid Touchwiz on it.
If I were in your shoes, I'd wait for the next Nexus phone. It'll be built on top of all the mistakes the first series of dual core phones will have made, with a version of Android that will actually be able to take advantage of the power properly... (Samsung haven't actually confirmed if SGS II will be getting 2.4 / Ice Cream for the phone or not)

The i9000 is a Well suppprted phone. And samsung it's on the verge of releasing 2.3. If you could do it for free, I would go for it, otherwise hold off.

Why would you want a nexus S when galaxy s already has 2.3 and that was really the only thing NS had over SGS...oh and better GPS
Id wait for galaxy s 2 will be out in a week or two
also there really isn't much support in dev section for NS
not saying the NS is bad becasue its not but to late in the game better phones are already available
I think its worth it. I came from the vibrant to the nexus s. Although hardware is near identical, running the latest OS makes all the difference. It may be true that the galaxy s will receive 2.3, but the nexus s will eventually receive 2.4, again giving it the upperhand with a more optimized OS. To me, the difference between 2.2 and 2.3 on similar devices were huge, and I would expect the same for 2.3 to 2.4.

thanks for replying guys, and no ,the exchange wouldn't be for free, id have to pay a little more then a $100 for the exchange , but like i said i wanted to know what the nexus owners have to say about their custom roms because at the end of the day these devices are more or less the same except for factory built ext 4 FS Nexus S has, regarding the Galaxy 2, ive heard that samsung is going to lock the OS (locked bootloaders or something), which basically means no custom roms??
Not for nothing but vibrant has alot going for it over nexus s imo id rather get a sg2 or a sensation I wouldnt pay any money for an exchange No Gorilla Glass,No 720p,No Codecs,No TV out 3.5mm,No SD Card,
Things it has over the Vibrant:
GPS Fixed
Ext4 Filesystem
Google Coding it
Form Factor
The phone is pretty fast
If the Nexus S gets 3.1 or whatever the next android version is then maybe the nexus s might be worth it but for now personally would go the sg2,sensation or maybe even g2x route because it has new bands on it for at%t

The G2X doesn't have quad-band UMTS support like initially reported.
U got to be kidding galaxy s for nexus s i dont think so
The Google experience is just too good to give up while all these phones

I have the nexus s and my friend has a galaxy s. The phones are almost the same.
You have no reason for changing your phone (and pay for it).
When google releases the new android version, be sure there will be a new newer google phone that runs this version. Then it might be the time for an upgrade.

Youll always be up to date on latest android software directly from google. And the camera isnt that baddd as some say.

I just left Tmobile after getting burned on two Samsung devices( behold 2 and vibrant 3g) , never getting updates. Sgs 4g has very little developer support, no cyanogen and will most likely never get then.
Nexus branded phones get software from google, eliminating any carrier marketing plans. Google #neveragain and see what you find. I was one of them, I will never buy another non nexus Samsung product ever again

Building on from what adamcooks said, go for the Nexus S. It was made for Gingerbread and there's no better way to start out with Android than that, it will give you real Android experience without all the manufacturer customizations.
I just bought the same Nexus S myself, got it imported because in Australia they do not have S-AMOLED screen variant of Nexus S. I absolutely love it.
There is heaps of development and support for Nexus S and the phone is actually really easy to mod compared to other Samsung and other manufacturer's devices I have used.
Ultimately it is your decision, but if you really want to unlock the full opportunities of Android I say go for the Nexus S.
Nexus S definitely.
You posted this in the Nexus forums, so the trend will be to recommend the nexus and i'm no exception. It's a great phone, camera is OK and does the job in a pinch, but just like any other cell phone, it's no competition for dedicated camera devices (I have a canon elph and access to a DSLR)
Updates for this phone come from Google directly Over the Air. meaning if you never connect your phone to a computer, you will still get updated. I just recommend connecting to Wifi before insatlling the updates as they can get rather large (100 megs+)
This phone is also set to receive Ice Cream Sandwich and I would expect it to get all the incremental updates until the next release of Android and possibly further.
No other Android phone get's the software support that the nexus line gets. The only downside that i've seen is that Google is sometimes slow to fix bugs in the OS and being on the nexus means you will have to live with them until they get fixed. Branded phones like the Galaxy series are later in getting their updates, but tend to be a little more "fixed" in regards to the stability of Android.
Now that I've had a nexus, I won't go back to any other phone, even though I've had my share of problems with this one (search bug)
My last recommendation is to wait a week or two for the Galaxy Nexus to be released, once that bad boy is out on the market, the Nexus S should start to see a price drop.
Do you guys think the Galaxy S2 is a worthy upgrade from the nexus s because I have the choice to get one right now and wanted to know you guys opinion?
Hardly seems worth it since you'll be switching to a phone running an older version of Android. The Nexus S is still a fairly competitive phone even with year old hardware.
the situation i'm in is either get a new phone now or wait 2 more years with the nexus s. Does that change things?
Well I have the epic touch 4g and it's amazing, now with that said I just got my gf a nexus and put ics on it it also is amazing. The epic is the only upgrade I see and it's worth it but your not gonna get ics for another month or more. Now with calks rom, desparado kernal, and ics theme I love it more than anything (except a galaxy nexus).
If you can get one for not too much money I would say yes as the nexus while it's great with ics and glades kernal it's still not perfect, it's almost there but ics is still early.
Either way each option is good so I say go for the epic touch or wait and pray and hope sprint gets the galaxy nexus because that is the only phone I can see myself leaving the epic for. And once the epic gets ics the epic in some ways is really better.
My wife's gs2 (epic 4g touch) blows my nexus s 4g away. There is no comparison. After owning it, there are no regrets. I have nexus owners that admit it is a very nice phone lol.
When u look at the camera, battery life, size, CPU, gpu...the list of **** it actually does, built in screen shot, can connect Bluetooth keyboard/mouse, HDMI via mhl adapter...
I have played w ics and plenty of ics roms for my ns4g, owned plenty of phones and the gs2 on sprint is arguably one of the best phones I have ever touched, no pun intended.
My ns4g just feels slow in comparison.
Go try a dual core device at Sprint to get a better idea of the differences. I found the most obvious differences in scrolling rich web pages, doing other stuff while updating apps, using the device during TB backups, etc.
Don't forget, you also get a huge increase in ram, screen size, and even notable boost in battery life (YMMV) . ICS won't be available for a while, so keep that in mind as well.
I have two Epics and two Epic Touches.. one of the latter is new if you want to trade for your NS +, cash
isn't the epic touch wimax? Not late? I'd wait for an lte device.

Yes but sprints network rollout is worthless. I have heard about rev b since October yet no one has posted it actually being functional. Maybe by 2013 or 14.sprint spent so much on iPhones seems like they can't put new towers up, all the while Verizon is bringing 4g to way more places w the aggressive rollout.
