Where did you hear this? I wish that there was a setting for the backlights; even very old "feature" phones had options for duration of keypad backlights.

why in the world would they make the keys backlit if they're gonna change their minds and try to disable it later?? doesn't make sense to me... although if they really wanted to it shouldn't be that hard, it's something within the kernel judging from how our devs have been able to get stuff like BLN working with some some kernel hacking

I tried searching the forum but the xda app search is a bit limited and I need this within the next hour if possible. Is there a quick method to take screen captures on my rooted phone? Appreciate all your help, really. I'm out in the field and can't reach a desktop or laptop anytime soon.

On the new OTA build I can't manage to screen capture the notification shade anymore because the stupid animation makes the phone lag and it doesn't cap before the shade has gone away. This is a problem when using the stock capture method. (Sorry for hijacking your thread but this is a relevant issue depending on what you are trying to screen cap.)

Hi guys,
I'm running SGS4G with KJ6 rom and drhonks KJ1 Kernel + voodoo lagfix + cwm recovery + debloater.zip + KD1 modem
I love my phone and I use a screen filter app to dim the screen even lower to save batt, still though those annoying soft key lights are blinding at night and surely wasting power...
My question is, is there any Devs out there who would be willing to write a .zip or .tar that I could flash that would completely disable the soft key backlights? They really serve no purpose, we all know where they are, they do not change, why do they need to be illuminated? Anyway I would write the code myself if I had the first clue where to start....
I googled and found an app that will does just what you want as long as your super user is upated and you are rooted...
download screen filter in market
it has an option to disable the lights
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Did you think that posting a link to said app might be a good idea? Just a thought... I already use screen filter and it does have the option to disable softkey lights but it does not work on my SGS4G.

If you really want to disable them permanently, it's a one-line change in the kernel. You basically don't tell it where the light switch is .

Code:
gpio_direction_output(_3_GPIO_TOUCH_EN, onoff);
Well damn, looks like that might not only have turned off the backlight, but also the ability to use the button. Black electrician's tape is probably an easier solution if that was your goal.
Somehow I think you still want to be able to use the buttons though.
Isn't there another line of code that tells how bright the keys can be? Is it possible to set that at 0?

I'm not trying to hinder development, but in my opinion I would rather them spend their time on stuff that is less cosmetic... that stuff can come later because there are more important issues they are working on. I'm sure it will one day get fixed...

Sometimes a little distraction is nice. Trust me, after you've been staring at VCO divider tables for a while, something simple like "Can you just turn off this light?" is a good way to improve productivity. I'm back in the tables again this morning, but this gives me something interesting and rewarding to do during the roughly hour and a half a full build takes.

Pfft!
no one here is asking the main devs for this fix anymore....its already been said several times they dont know....sooo maybe other people in here can try to figure out a fix.
So have a nice day.
Also its not just so "cosmetic" as you think.....the people that are on ics based roms would truely appreciate this fix due to the amount of battery life gained if those damn lights didnt stay on.
I would like to know which line this is as well. I dont need extra keys in beam. I want just the hard keys

I do agree that it would be nice. Think about it the only time the lights are on is if the screen is on, if the screen is on, chances are you are touching the screen unless you are watching a movie... there are a few roms out that don't have this problem like the beam port... Maybe compare roms and kernels? There is bound to be a solution. I hope you find your answer and sorry i wasn't trying to blast anyone.
Its all good....i watch alt of movies while sitting at the back gates waiting for the parks to empty out at Disney so i can go to work and the those lights are quite annoying in the dark watching movies lol
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! Theres an app called screen filter on the market that does the trick by turning off the softkeys umtil you actually click them details are on my capacitive buttons thread.
Its kinda old news...but it does work but its just more steps for getting what you want......when it could all be avoided

It works when its placed on a flat surface. I also believe it works by using the proximity sensor which of course also uses light sensor so it can see your hand in the dark. I really do hope someone can get this to work on our GSIII.
Its cool. Don't see why it would be useful though..

You're at work, sitting at your desk. Your led light is blinking and you want to see what you've missed.
Hit a button? Who does that nowadays? Simply hover your hand over the proximity sensor and bam! You notice you've missed a text, which can wait. Carry on with your work, son.
Or you can wake your phone when the led is blinking, respond to the text, and then waste time on your phone reading XDA when you should be working.

Wow, that is pretty nifty. Let's be honest, most of the GSIII features are mostly just cool things to show people with SOME (but little) real application.
I would love this as well.

I wonder how much battery this consumes as it'd have to keep the proximity sensor active all the time.

I know the Skyrocket doesn't have any LED notification LED's on it. But I was wondering if there's a way for people to make the buttons on the phone light up if you get a notification. Like menu button lights up when you get a text, home button lights up when you get another type of notification, et cetera, et cetera. Was just wondering anyways.
