NEWS: (Updated 8/23/11)
Version 1.02 is out. Previously known as "Lean-Stock, Deodexed, with Bali & Root".
DESCRIPTION:
SaLT: Stock and Lean-Tweaked. This one is very simple... I have yet to see a decent, flashable, barebones KG2 ROM for the SK4G, so I stripped down sduvick's Stock KG2 ROM for my own purposes... This ROM is meant to save you a bunch of time regarding removing bloatware. This is simply a KG2 ROM for those who are trying to develop their own ROMs for the SK4G.

DISCLAIMER:
This IS NOT a "custom ROM" in any traditional sense. I will NOT be responding to dev requests or bugs. If anyone wants to help me debug the ROM that'd be great. Otherwise, updates will roll out whenever I figure it out on my own.
PROPS:
Thanks to sduvick for the original ROM that this one is based off of and thanks to ayoteddy for passing down some wisdom my direction. They and the rest of the Platypus Dev Team are doing excellent work, which was my inspiration to get involved, if only on a personally beneficial level at this point.
ABOUT ME:
I'm not a dev, I'm a tester attempting dev *stuff*... Hate me if you want, but everybody has to start somewhere.
Is that ^ posted in the right thread?
/*EDIT*
You used the same Icon as I did for mine, I hit the wrong thread...
I need sleep!
*EDIT*/
The ability to WiFi-tether would be a good feature too, as every time I tried it on TouchWiz builds something was funny...

Yes, I believe it is, as it is a ROM for the T-Mobile Sidekick 4G.

The removed browser is what causes the phone to Fc @ boot incase you were wondering
Anyone testing that build/stripped ROM?
I need my phone for work, AND PLAY, so I am unable to Beta-test (Alpha-test?) from a "builder" that I have never checked a ROM from yet.
<N/M> I is k-fused.
Okay, but I've removed stock browser before and never had that problem, which is why I wouldn't have thought of it. I usually pull stock and replace with Firefox every time. I'll give replacing it a try, though.

Yeah, I'm testing right now. As in, I've left the house, got off the wifi, toyed with market and the mobile network with the settings I provided earlier, everything works except those two issues above.

i've been able to remove it as well but if you flash the ROM without the stock browser it will FC, actually gave me non stop FC's. But when removed while the phone is on and running i havent had a problem
Just flashed this after a horrible experience with another ROM. In general, stock look is what I want but improved functions over the original and a much more stable device.
Try my clean fusion rom

I'm liking this so far. Pushing the browser was fairly easy. Being stock though. Am I to expect the memory leak to rear it's ugly head and bog down my device eventually and issues with the SD card wiping itself? Although a lean ROM, I think the only thing you left out that I would of left in is the TeleNav. It's not a free app to just download and it is one I did use.

You can expect the memory leak, I haven't figured out that aspect just yet. I'm hoping to come out with an update after I figure out how I fragged the APN settings... As for random SD wipes, I've had no such issues, ever, on any phone. CleanFusion v3 is an awesome ROM, I've been testing it and the new GingerClone. Both are excellent choices for users who want more features, tweaks, and functionality. This ROM is just an aim at X = stock - bloatware. The next version will ship with Tegrak Overclock Free, though.

Install your favorite Sense based rom (I still haven't gotten MMS working in AOSP despite all my attempts) on your EVO flashed for Cricket
Use the dialer to edit EPST settings and configure the MMS server information:
mmsc: http://mmsmycricket.com/servlets/mms
mms proxy: wap.mycricket.com
Remember to set your MMS size limit in the msging app to 500k (higher settings don't seem to go through)
Enjoy.

I proudly present Jiminy, it is an EVO rom meant for Cricket subscribers. I now consider it a 100% working solution for Cricket subscribers that have MMS issues with Sprint based roms. This is targeted more towards people with the $55 Android plan that has the Android data features activated on it. If you are on the $45 or less plan you likely need to use token419's solution (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730289) in addition to this rom to route data traffic through the cricket wap proxy.
The HTC MMS app is fully functional and already set to the 500k send size to work with Cricket. It can view all conversations properly. There is no need for a 3rd party MMS client.
Flashing this rom does NOT program your phone for Cricket, it is simply a rom optimized for full functionality on Cricket with none of the sprint crap you won't use. Your phone still must be reprogrammed either by a Cricket store with the Houdini software or by yourself (or someone who knows how) via QPST and CDMA workshop to have all the proper settings for putting the phone on the Cricket network. If your phone has not been reprogrammed for Cricket yet I would suggest using these instructions: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...o-Flash-to-Cricket-with-Talk-Text-Wap-and-MMS
It might be a good idea to use a newer PRL than the one suggested in that guide (since it's old). I am attaching the most recent PRL I have to this post.
Rom is:
rooted
deodexed
busybox installed
data/app enabled
No Sprint bloatware
***************************************
Flash rom to device (a wipe is suggested) and then restore/import a working APN for Cricket (or maybe even MetroPCS).
Here are the contents of an APN.xml file that is known to work. Remember you MUST edit it with you own phone number, don't simply copy and paste it....
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='yes' ?>
<apns count="1">
<apn name="CDMA-MMS" numeric="46605" mcc="466" mnc="05" apn="mms" user="your10digit#[email protected]" server="NA" password="cricket" proxy="wap.mycricket.com" port="8080" mmsproxy="null" mmsport="null" mmsprotocol="null" mmsc="http://mms.mycricket.com/mycricket/mms.php" type="mms" />

***********changelog***********
Jiminy v1 - like v2 but with too many bugs lol -no longer hosted
Jiminy v2 - deodexed OTA 3.28.651.1 rom for EVO and the 3.21.651.1 OTA for the Incredible. g3a8614e kernel. Removed all market available apps (facebook, google maps, etc) so that they can be installed from market and updated in the future.
http://www.massmirror.com/2b70dfedce096c317481f922e8fa350b.html
Jiminy v3 - I never distributed it but ran it for almost 2 months (3.29 base with 3.21 Inc bits) with the kingxklick BFS #9 kernel - had a grand ol' time.
Jiminy IV - 100% 3.30.651.3 EVO base. No more hybrid with Incredible. MMS.apk is modified to work properly now. Everything works 100%. HDMI and 4G control are full restored. All stock apps restored minus Sprint bloatware. Hopefully this does not cause a problem with voicemail notifications now? I use Google Voice for mine so it won't matter, but if you use the Cricket voicemail then you might want to keep an eye on this lol. But more importantly, why aren't you using google voice for your voicemail anyway? It's free and infinitely awesome.
*added keyboards
http://massmirror.com/4566f745375e8dd9beb7bfd6d9834a9d.html
Jiminy V - 100% 3.70.651.1 Evo based off of aamikam's reengineered stock rom that has all the apks rebuilt to be smaller and faster. I think I forgot to add the multitouch keyboard back in, but go snag yourself a Gingerbread one instead anyway (and of course the oem supplied Swype is in there as well). As always it is de-Sprinted as well.
If some apps stop working over 3g (youtube and pandora) then your proxy settings might have been returned to Sprint. Follow these instructions to set them back to working settings for Cricket:
Dial ##3282#
edit mode
enter 000000 ok
goto advanced
scroll to RTSP proxy address and HTTP PD proxy address and change them to 0.0.0.0
hit back twice and now try youtube it should work!

Internet and GPS simply work, no settings
MMS is set by importing an APN xml file as I already stated. Use APN Backup and Restore from the market to do this.
This rom assumes you have the Android cricket plan. If you are on the $45 plan you probably still need to use Token419's cricket flash for that u2nl tunneling through the wap stuff.

Surprisingly little.
It turns out MMS.apk has a couple buddy apks in the /system/app folder. I haven't pinpointed exactly which ones are required and aren't. However, using pretty much the entire /system/app folder from the right Incredible rom in the right EVO rom seems to work pretty well.
Another key component to pulling it all together was to start the combination process using deodexed roms for the EVO and the Incredible as the source material. I tried with some odexed roms with no success. Deodexing removes some sort of device/framework related dependencies from what I understand.
It really wasn't too hard in the end, I can recreate the rom in just a few moments and will probably be able to do future ports in little time, but it took a LOT of trial and error to get to this point.
is it normal for it to kick back to 1x and auto make a slideshow?
ok was able to send myself a mms, but sent one to my girl and she hasnt gotten it yet. and ive been on 1x now for a few mins

Slideshow is what you get for now, lol. When I send the "slideshow" to my other phone (iphone) it just shows up as 1 picture. So unless it bothers you to see "slideshows" on your end I really don't see what the issue is. A very minor quirk and may just be how the Incredible mms app works.
No idea about the 1x stuff. Doesn't happen to me. Have you updated your phone to the latest radios?
Also, make sure anyone you send to does not have a 1 in front of their 10 digit number. It (or Cricket) doesn't appear to like that.

Nice. I'll pop this on my wife's EVO and post results. I spent a good half day till I got the MMS working properly on it, with the handcent/chompsms assist of course. I grabbed a Droid Incredible MMS.apk that's floating around somewhere here in the forums.
deathsled this rom rocks. I flashed it this morning here in Phoenix and it works great on Cricket. I can even get voice mail notifications without having to install voice mail notifier. I'm getting awesome 3g service, calls come through great and so far, no issues. Please get yourself setup for donations.
*** Update: found that Google Maps and Superuser won't update. Uninstalled both and re-installed with newer versions.

That aside the rom runs great for me so far. havnt been able to really gauge its uptime but i will after a few days.
I noticed a couple things weren't updating on my phone as well.
It's not a huge deal, but I'd like to sort that out, so I'll hammer out this updating issue and pop out a V2 before long lol

i think its just because where they are getting installed to. other roms ive seen have had same issues
**ok it wasn't Apps2SD***
Ok so it looks like any preinstalld apps don't like to update. I'll make another revision with a couple more tweaks but also strip out any apps available in the market. That way they can all be installed manually and should be able to update properly in the future.
In the mean time if you just pull the stuff off the device manually that won't update and then reinstall from the market I think you're good to go.
updated original post with new v2 information and links
also, I no longer consider the no MMS while wifi is on the last 1% I'm missing. It turns out that Android disables the mobile data connection when wifi is turned on (at least for CDMA devices). This can obviously be defeated as seen by the wifi tethering apps, but basically would require some recoding of the MMS app. I'm sure future updates to Android will probably iron this little annoyance out.
good job man
i have been working on this myself but you beat me to it i am working on a port myself for cricket that will have the proxy settings built into it for the peeps that don't want the android plan. but congrats and appreciate the hard work
Thank You So Very Much
Thank you very much for all of your hard work!
I appreciate the Cricket love for the Evo.
Thanks to your ROM (which works FLAWLESSLY and FAST AS ALL GET OUT) I'm able to enjoy my EVO 1000x's more than I have before.
I see a PayPal donation coming your way in the near future..... ;-)
Whoa, you know it's legit kudos when you're getting it from these two. ^
add the fact that you can add the kingklick #9 kernel to this and unlock FPS AND overclock and this rom is great. again thanks for your contribution.
I wouldn't run King's BFS #9 kernel. I experience 100% CPU usage lag that was associated with that kernel. I'd stick with #8.

Click: GPS configuration and enter the following
NTP server address: north-america.pool.ntp.org
SUPL server address: supl.google.com
SUPL port: 7276

Let it do it's thing until where you see "Fix/Sats" - gets a fix on anywhere from 4-9 satellites and it will display your Latitude and Longitude.
Bam! You're done. Open Maps and enjoy the goodness.
If you don't get a very quick lock in Maps, go to: Settings - Programs Tab - Manage Applications - All - Maps - Force Close - Clear Data - do the same for GPS Status and repeat instructions beginning after NTP Server was set.

Others posted this issue with this kernel on the CM7 thread but it worked for some as it did for me.
I am not getting a lock in miui either so I will look into it as well as try flashing other kernels as they are developed since source was released now.
I had to install an alternate gps.spade.so in /system/lib/hw to get GPS working on CM7. I'm guessing it's the same for this too.

well i actually found a problem with the muiu rom, my pc wont see my phone in mass storage mode, so i cant transfer anything from my pc. I set it to ask which mode when usb is plugged in, and selected on the same setting screen to use mount sd card instead of charge only and still nothing. My pc would always see my phone in mass storage since ive had my inspire so its not on my pc end. Anyone else have this problem?
Hey I seen a newer version posted on desire HD forums...do u think that will fix the SMS issues??
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I had the same problem on mass storage to a mac and linux. Not sure what it could be so I'm reading miui development threads.
In the mean time I have simply used microsd usb adapter and moved things over in bulk. I use isynch for music and do it over wifi.
The other miui version you're talking about is probably that 1.2. 25 which is a general miui release and not specific to dhd. If you look on official miui development site it has a breakdown.
Phone dialer force closes. Any fix?
android.process.acore to be specific.
Phone dialer does crash on miui 1.2. 25
Need to use 1.2.19 from same thread.

That was an edit today. When I originally started this thread 1.2.19 was latest version. 1.2.25 was released on that thread yesterday, I believe.
I'm testing two other versions of the 1.2.25 rom and two other kernels. If I find a combination that works well in will update in original post.
See update 2-27-2011 in original post
1.2.25 working ...
Man, this ROM rocks! I installed the iPhone theme and took a screenshot, then I sent it to all of my friends.
They thought I bought an iPhone.
I switched back to CM7 because of the SD card issue, but I may switch back to this soon.
I too flip back and forth with CM7 nightlies and MIUI.
The mass storage device issue is odd because I have flashed MIUI on my Dell Streak, my daughter's Xperia X10 and even an unstable beta on my son's Captivate --- all were picked up by my computer as mass storage device for copying files back/forth.
I'm going to wait on a revision or two of the MIUI rom before I bug the dev's much on the mass storage issue.
Thanks for trying it out and posting.
I'm really surprised more people aren't trying this.
Sent from my CM7 Inspire
I'm writing an MMS app for Android and all was going well until I tested it out on a Droid Incredible S with Gingerbread 2.3.4. The issue was that it was not able to find the correct MMSC via the APN lookup using "content://telephony/carriers/current". I checked the GB source code and the CONTENT_URI hasn't changed. I can hard code a MMSC based on the carrier and it will work, but this isn't ideal.
Does anyone know if something changed with that GB version update? Maybe there is more strict security and I'm missing a permission? Perhaps it's a bug with the incredible ?

I hope this helps a lot of you. Keep in mind please that some stuff in here is a grab from VARIOUS resources, but essentially the idea is to help everyone here. So obviously, with that being said, original credits go to the posters from the sources. If you found this thread useful, then please hit the thanks button ENJOY READING
BTW, if you read something on here which you believe is incorrect, or something really common that i may have missed, then i ask you to kindly send me a Private Message and let me know what exactly you want to see on here or modified so that this remains correct. This way we don't need to see you flaming me
Q: What is the first and most important rule i should remember?
A: Well you see my little nublet, nothing comes free, it is wise for you to remember that the price to pay for a custom rom/port for our phones is TIME. If you do not already know, it is a very valuable thing which gets donated from our hard working developers. This lovely donation gets nurtured and praised by users here and therefore we always make sure to say thanks to the developers for putting efforts into bringing us the latest and the greatest. By standing around pouting and yelling why the developer is NOT spitting out an update is just plain and simple VERY NOOBISH of you. Unless you feel you have the guts and glory to continue on making something more useful and ever so great that you cannot be patient for the developer to do, then do it yourself . Other than that, the basic rule of the thumb is , be patient, polite, and always say thanks to our developers. Showing appreciation for their hard work here always returns in something fruitful.
*** IMPORTANT NOTE TO UNDERSTAND BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO USE ODIN / HEIMDALL ***
Of course just like any other flashing method, there's NO GUARANTEE you wont bump into problems. This is simply a tool which has worked for a good hand of us. Should you find yourself stumbling into any problems while using this alternative tool. Then be sure to ask someone on xda, and someone will try to help. Again, kind reminder that nobody on here can be held responsible if your device somehow fails to flash or something goes wrong on your end. At the same time, to help brighten you up a bit, the ability to recover from a simple soft brick can easily be done in most cases ( NOT ALL ).
Q: What is ODIN?
A: ODIN is the software which is used by Samsung to load updates, ROMS, etc. on their phones. Most commonly used to return the phone back to factory.
Q: Where do you get ODIN from?
A: Simple, just go to any of the back to stock threads listed in the Infuse Super Thread, or try THIS THREAD
Q: Whats an ODIN alternative, i don't get this ?
A: Then try the Heimdall One-Click Back-To-Stock . Some have reported it to work well.
Q: What is Unlocking and Rooting?
Answer 1: Unlocking enables you to cut all ties to your initial mobile network provider without replacing your mobile phone. When you purchase a mobile phone either on pay-as-you-go or a contract, network carrier includes a SIM, a chip in your handset, containing a serial number that identifies you to the network provider. Most network carrier "lock" your phone so it works only with their specific SIM card, a chip in your handset, containing a serial number that identifies you to the network provider. The only reason to lock the SIM is to ensure you use their service for an extended period of time. If you attempt to use an alternative SIM card in a locked phone, you will receive error messages, such as "SIM Card Not Accepted." .Unlocking enables you to use any SIM card on any network in your handset.
Answer 2: Rooting your Android device involves adding in a small Linux application called “su”. It stands for SuperUser, and allows applications and commands to run with elevated permissions. Everything that runs code, whether it’s an application or the user, has a permission level set by the operating system. The root user is the boss and can do anything (good or bad) on the device. From simple things like clearing the cache from core applications, to more advanced things like wirelessly tethering a laptop or iPod touch through your phone, root can do it. The su program is a sort of gateway that lets applications or users act as root while doing tasks.
Don't confuse custom ROMs with rooting - they're completely different!!!
Q: How to unlock my Infuse 4G?
A: This is super duper easy, although the lovely infuse super thread has a how to unlock tutorial, it may seem super hard for noobies. So having that said, i suggest its best to head on over to the empire city of EBAY.COM , find yourself an excellent phone unlock code provider and pay them, which is ( from what i saw, no more than $2.00 . Not a whole lot at all. Be prepared ! They all require 3 Basic pieces of information in order to help you unlock . Your IMEI Number, The Phone Manufacturer and Model ( Samsung Infuse, HTC Aria, etc.. u get it right? ) , and Most importantly, what your current Carrier is (ATT, Rogers, Sprint etc.. You got this too right? ) .
Q: Now where can i get my Unlock code from ?
A: Try anyone of these mofos from here --> CLICK ME TO SEE
Once you receive your UNLOCK code. All you have to do is just power off the phone, pop in the new sim card, and punch in the unlock code the person gave. THATS IT!
Q: Whats this IMEI number you speak of ?
A: The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 17 or 15 digit code used to identify an individual mobile station to a GSM or UMTS network. The IMEI number provides an important function; it uniquely identifies a specific mobile phone being used on a mobile network. The IMEI is a useful tool to prevent a stolen handset from accessing a network and being used to place calls. Mobile phone owners who have their phones stolen can contact their mobile network provider and ask them disable a phone using its IMEI number. With an IMEI number, the phone can be blocked from the network quickly and easily.
Q: What is Super One Click Tool?
A: A tool used to make rooting a phone super easy, it supports a wide variety of phones which run Android. The tool will root the Infuse 4G.
Q: Whats the difference between the infuse Android Recovery and Clockwork Recovery Mod ?
A: All Android devices ship with a recovery console that is basically a partition on the device’s internal memory and can be booted into. The stock recovery of almost all Android devices provides a few basic yet handy options that allow you to factory reset your device and also to recover its operating system using an official ROM in zip format, but that’s all you can do with it. That’s where a custom recovery comes handy.
A custom Android recovery basically replaces the stock recovery with one that lets you do all you can do with the stock recovery, plus a plethora of more options to give you a lot more control on your device. With a custom recovery, you can install official and unofficial ROMs as well as other updates including apps, themes, kernels etc. using zip files, wipe not just user data but pretty much every partition on your device, mount the storage card for USB mass storage access without leaving recovery, partition your SD card, wipe Dalvik cache and battery stats, fix permissions, perform, manage and restore backups and so on.
ClockworkMod – also known as Clockwork and CWM – is a custom recovery for Android phones and tablets that allows you to perform several advanced recovery, restoration, installation and maintenance operations on your Android device that aren’t possible with the stock recovery. Things like flashing a custom rom, kernel, boot loader image and stuff are possible.
Q: What is a Kernel?
A: A kernel in an operating system—in this case Android—is the component responsible for helping your applications communicate with your hardware. It manages the system resources, communicates with external devices when needed, and so on. Android uses a variation of the Linux kernel. A kernel is not the same as a ROM, even though you install them in mostly the same way. A ROM is a bit more all-encompassing. It's the operating system you use on your phone, the software your phone uses to get things done—the kernel is the bridge between that ROM and your hardware. All ROMs come with a kernel installed, but you can install a third-party one if you like—and that's what this post is about.
Q: What will flashing a custom Kernel do for my Infuse?
A: You may have heard about how flashing a new ROM can improve your Android experience, but flashing a new kernel is one of the best ways to improve your phone's performance, battery life, and even add some saucy new features such as tethering and many more things.
Q: The Samsung Infuse has various modems, what do they do?
A: The modem is basically the software portion of the cellular radio in your Infuse. This has an effect on the signal ( voice + data ) and the battery life as well. If you have ever flashed a custom rom before then you already know that most developers have their roms with the modem built in which they prefer you to use. Although you have the choice to upgrade the modem to a newer one if you insist, it isn't always recommended. However, if your signal diminished with an update, and you’re willing to flash something, then you might be interested in “downgrading” or "upgrading" to an different modem.
Q: How do i know what modem i have?
A: Go to Settings > About Phone > Baseband Version . The text written under the Baseband is what modem your Infuse is currently running.
Q: Which Modem should i use
A: Theres no FIXED solution to this as everyone has their preference, unless you know what you are gaining or losing, or better yet, know what you are doing period, then this is not something suggested to play around with. Everyone in general has different experiences. For the most part though, by using one of the latest modems, the Infuse has been seen to perform better, but not drastically.
Q: When should I try a new modem?
A: If you are perfectly happy with your signal and battery life, then don’t worry about it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If you’re having issues, then maybe it’s time to flash a new modem. Just be warned, some modems will improve your signal, some will do the opposite. If you’re in a low signal area, and have no way of flashing back right away, then wait for a better solution.
Q: MODS AND TWEAKS? WTF is this ?
A: Simple , With mods and tweaks, you can easily add additional features to your Infuse, modify the functionality of existing features to meet your needs, install custom boot animations, and various other features which wouldn't normally come with the default ROM .
Q: NO DATA NETWORK / APN SETTINGS LOST AFTER A FLASH ?
A: This is common for some flashes, especially when switching from one custom or factory rom to another. The solution is a really quick fix.
Step 1: Open the Application Drawer and select Settings
Step 2: Select Wireless and Network
Step 3: Select Mobile Networks
Step 4: Select Access Point Names
Step 5: Check to see if anything is listed, don't delete any at this point ( situation may vary on this step )
Step 6: Press your Menu button on the phone and select +NEW APN
Step 7: Enter the following Information AS I HAVE POSTED. When i get other carriers information ill be sure to update. Once finishing entering the below Read next step!

Q: ROMS / CUSTOM ROMS and PORTED ROMS, what are these exactly?
A stock ROM is the version of the phone's operating system that comes with your phone when you buy it.
A custom ROM is a fully standalone version of the OS, including the kernel (which makes everything run), apps, services, etc - everything you need to operate the device, except it's customized by someone in some way.
So what does the "customized" part mean? Since Android is open source, developers are free to take stock ROMs, modify them, strip them of garbage, optimize them, add things, and pretty much do whatever their imagination and skills allow.
a ported rom is essentially similar to a custom rom, except it is a rom which was previously built for a different phone , but ported to work on our phone now. Please note, its likely that a ported rom may carry some bugs here and there as the original rom is not based on the Infuse rom itself.
Q: I keep seeing custom ROM updates, why ?
A:Using a custom ROM usually results in more frequent updates that fix bugs and introduce new features because the developer behind the ROM doesn't have the same procedures and red tape that the manufacturer+carrier combo does.
A quality update can be churned faster because it doesn't involve the bureaucracy of 30 different project managers, 15 vice presidents, and 5 dozen marketing departments.
A ROM developer usually gains a loyal community which beta tests his updates in real life situations and provide feedback, or even fixes bugs - that's the beauty of open source software.
Oh and did I mention that ROMs are usually free and supported by optional donations? If you can't afford to pay for it, you don't have to.
Better Performance And Efficiency
Custom ROMs are oftentimes faster, more efficient, and use less memory because
the developer ripped out useless garbage, such as carrier installed apps or
the developer optimized the kernel. For example, an undervolted kernel can provide a much better battery life than the stock one.
Upgrading To A Better/Later Version Of Android
You can upgrade to a version of the OS that has not yet been released for your device, or never will be. This is possible in 2 situations:
A leaked version of the new ROM showed up online, and the developer got on it like the fat kid chasing an ice cream truck. This was exactly the case with the Samsung Infuse, where we were successfully able to get Gingerbread before the official announced day of release
A ROM from another phone was ported by the developer to work on yours. For example, LinuxBozo's Hellraiser allowed us to install roms from other Samsung phones (plus or minus a few bugs) but still worked great on our Infuse.
Ability To Install Apps To The SD Card
Most custom ROMs nowadays come with the ability to install applications to the SD card, called Apps2SD (or A2SD).
This is currently not possible on stock ROMs, even in Android 2.1 and is supposedly on Google's TODO list.
If you have run out of space on your phone , Apps2SD is a killer feature to have.
Don't confuse custom ROMs with rooting - they're completely different!!.
The Downsides Of Custom ROMs
Of course, there are dangers of using custom ROMs which you should be aware of.
Something Could Go Wrong
First of all, something may go wrong with the flashing process (that's the process of installing the ROM) and leave your phone in a bricked state. The chances of this are pretty low nowadays, and most of the time you can restore it back to normal.
Try to go for the ROM that has been tested by time and has lots of positive feedback.
Clean Wipe
In order to install a custom ROM, you need to perform a clean wipe.
This means you will lose all existing data, so you have to back everything up first. You can go into CWM and do an entire Nandroid Backup.
Potential Problems
Custom ROMs could have bugs… but then so do the stock ones.
However, in case you do find a bug, you actually have a 2-way channel of reporting it - post in the ROM forum and you will more than likely get an answer back and your bug acknowledged.
Try doing this to your phone manufacturer and see if you can get past the first level of outsourced monkeys, let alone actual developers.
You May Void Your Warranty
It's possible that custom rooting will void your warranty because you will "break the seal" on the boot loader by installing a custom one which on some phones apparently can't be undone (this includes the Nexus One). Because of that, the manufacturer might be able to tell that the phone has had a custom ROM installed and not honor the warranty, in case you need to use it.
Now, in most cases, the benefits of the custom ROM outweigh the possibility of your warranty being denied. I recommend getting a warranty from your carrier and using that in case anything bad happens (that warranty is usually unconditional and covers things like losses and physical damage).
Truly outstanding post for us newbies!
Thanks!!!!!

Or you can also post it as a first link to your Superthread as well. Some may debate if this belongs in the Dev vs Gen vs QA

I think in this case, it belongs here. Unfortunately, most noobs only look here for roms without doing proper research. Hopefully, this will catch some of them and slow them down enough to prevent some of the basic issues.

no problem, im really happy that this helped and still is helping ALOT of ppl, noob or not noob . Again just wanna say, most of the stuff you see here was a copy and paste from various resources, but i did spend time to make sure it was a well defined reason or explanation before posting. And of course there are parts which i reworded myself to help the newcomers. nevertheless, thanks everyone for showing their appreciation.

Titanium Backups
Here is a Titanium Back up question. If I back up my apps ... flash a new rom .... when I restore my apps .... do my page set ups come back as well like a nandroid back up? In other words ... once done will all my pages look like they did on the previous rom or do I have to place each app and widget on the screen I want it on. Never have restored before.

no. the apps will show up in your app drawer. you have to pull them out.
it is usually recommended to restore app only -no data but some have reported success.
restoring data may cause hiccups later...may..not definite.you can take a chance if you want to.
I honestly never used nandroid backup to restore apps, especially when switching from different kind of roms. I always use this app to take a backup of installed apps from the market, then i proceed with wipe/data factory reset and install new app. Download this app again and restore from the folder it made on my internal sd memory.
Click me to see the App im talking about!!
I only use nandroid to recover an entire installation if the rom sucked, or i screwed something up badly.
Hope this helps
PS, the restore wont bring back desktop layout of apps. As previous poster said, will only bring it back into app drawer if restore is done correctly.
The only time I ever used the nandroid restore was last night win for some reason the R3v rom kept kept aborting and would not install. Thank you both very much for the reply you have both told me exactly what I was looking 4 in a kind and friendly way which trust me is truly appreciated.

Everyone please read this following message at least once, maybe twice as i get sidetracked and may make no sense:
To users advanced and new, due to a lot of confusion on how things work with AOKP i decided to lay it all on the table to help everyone have a better understanding of how things go. First off I'm sorry for my typing and or wording as I'm no public speaker or author. AOKP is run by "Team Kang", for more info on those members you can visit aokp.co and find everything you need.
Now, AOKP is a community of people all over the world, on a wide range of devices, all working together to add features, fix bugs, add tweaks etc. Any person can do this by sending a code commit to the AOKP gerrit page. This page allows other AOKP users, developers, testers to make sure the code is satisfactory, clean, and doesn’t conflict with any other part of AOKP. Now, its Team Kangs decision on if they add this feature, fix, etc to AOKP (which is called merging), or throwing it out (which they call abandoning). All the features in these releases are merged and official except the ones i label as WIP (work in progress), these are still in testing phase and not official. Those i add in manually in a process which is called cherry picking. Any "cherry picks" may be in a better or worse state from build to build as they are still in progress.
As you may or may not know, since the beginning of this thread the skyrocket has not been a "officially supported device", and still isnt. However its twin brother (the hercules aka t989) is supported by whitehawkx. While these devices aren’t IDENTICAL, they are close enough in hardware to make the two devices "on par" with each other when it comes to a development standpoint (not taking into account what days i build vs whitehawkx etc things may vary). Now, to get builds for this device i use a combination of AOKP code, CM code, and stuff i slapped together, tweaked, changed etc to get skyrocket up and running. I do not consider myself a developer, but i do what i can to help out with skyrocket, as well as test and review new code on the AOKP gerrit page (the commits i was talking about, and me giving my OK on if it should be merged, although the merge is up to Team Kang).
While people thank me constantly for the work i do with supplying builds and the new features that were merged and or committed, they are not my personal work. The modifications to the device tree, source code for skyrocket, and the builds are. As i said above, AOKP is a community of tons of users putting in their share of code, features, and things they would like to see in the ROM. Really you couldn’t even begin to thank everyone that has their hand in AOKP, the amount of people that help out is staggering.
With that said, i hope you enjoy AOKP on the skyrocket, if you can make sure to donate to team kang by visiting their website or the "about aokp" section under Rom Control.
Got AOKP JB building perfect finally, will build as i see fit.
Not responsible for breakage.

So with AOKP you can't have the either of the touch wiz launcers or the touch wiz text messaging theme?
I understand that it indirectly states that it was tested by another member. However, I would never advise anyone to flash a rom that is devoloped yet not tested by the people that built it. I just wouldnt do it. My opinion. However, thanks dev for the ROM, I'm sure there are plenty of people that will flash it!

You may be able to run the launcher, although i dont know why you would want to . Messaging theme no. You could try replacing the messaging APK but i have a feeling that will backfire.

I understand that it indirectly states that it was tested by another member. However, I would never advise anyone to flash a rom that is devoloped yet not tested by the people that built it. I just wouldnt do it. My opinion. However, thanks dev for the ROM, I'm sure there are plenty of people that will flash it!

Cool bootanimation!
I used this wipe process
Perform "Wipe Data/factory reset"
Perform ''wipe cache partition''
Go to advance ->''Wipe dalvik cache''
Go to "mounts and storage" -> Select "Format /system"
Go to "mounts and storage" -> Select "Format /data''
Go to "mounts and storage" -> Select "Format /cache''
did each one 3 times....
No Play Store?

Yeah. I understand. Checked the profile. He has been around far longer than I. Just giving my opinion, I wouldnt trust my phone being flashed with a rom developed by someone without the phone for update purposes and the like. That being said I will leave the thread and you guys can enjoy the rom. Thanks.
Just booted this build up and tested both camera front and back right away and it works and seems very smooth so far....thanks again....
Awesome R4INS. Good job. Maybe this guy can take over the aokp goodness. Have yet to flash. I miss having aokp as a DD lol
