I find "the grip of normality" is the best fix. Seriously, holding it normally and in most scenarios there is no problem. You have to TRY to get it to drop out, and that'll only happen if your wifi signal is already weak.
Most custom roms also have a fix which lowers the threshold at which the phone drops the signal however. I ran the phone on stock rom for 2 months and didn't have one dropped connection. Its an awesome phone.
My only gripe with it is you have to run gpsfix every couple of weeks if you want a GPS lock. A problem with the a-gps chip though so not a HTC sense our android issue. Mildly annoying when you are sat in your car waiting for gps to lock, but at least its fixable, and forgivable considering how good the rest of the phone is.

Aaaah another one coming from G1
Can def. recommend the DS!
Didn't really have any probs with the wifi issue...
Well, i using a TGU case and everything, never had issue with wifi disconnection... thats all i have to say
When using my phone normally around my house, the signal stays between maximum strength and -1 bar strength with my normal grips (normal single hand portrait and dual hand landscape view).
I can force the issue and using a tight double handed grip in portrait view and reduce the signal to one bar but I have been unable to cause my connection to drop.
There's a fix from gtg465x which lets you stay connected to the wifi even when your signal is low. This doesn't solve the "death grid" but it improved wifi a lot for me! source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051674
As said before, there is a somewhat hidden setting to get the wifi to perform a bit better and at least not dropping the connection. Go to: Settings -> Wireless and setworks-> Wi-Fi settings, press menu, choose Advanced and check the Best Wi-Fi performance checkbox. Note that as it says in the menu itself, it may consume more power. Isn't there too much topics about this in this forum? Please someone put them togethether with a sticky and delete my double posts. Thanks.

I have been using it for a couple days now. The signal is very weak on my phone, it disappears sometime. It shows "Excellent" on my laptop. Does anyone has this problem?
I'm using stock rom from tmobile.
Actually i have almost the double of wifi strength that i had on Galaxy s2, no problem at all, so test it better
Did you get the 2.3.4 update? It improves WiFi signal strength.
Mines great ! Way better than my old Evo 4g. Just picked up the NETGEAR N600 dual band wireless router. Works like a charm.

Do you know about the deathgrip issues with the Sensation? Try looking it up, it might be what's affecting your signal.
Laptops probably have better wireless antenas built in. It is after all a cellphone we are talking about. Just like your 2 core CPU is no match for a 2 core laptop/pc, same is probably true for WiFi. But that's just my guess. I don't get a lot of range on my sensation either, but my previous phones were kind of the same, maybe even weaker.

Same here !
Mine picks up the wifi from the back of the house just fine. If I turn the phone and put my hand on the top it gets worse for sure.
I dont use wifi tho so it doesn't matter at the moment. I hear the update improved this issue.

I used an iphone on the same spot. It got pretty good signal. I think that's the problem from the phone.

I don't hold the phone, just put the phone on the desk to test.
Dare i suggest try a windsurfer. I have one on a dg834g and have no wifi issues with any of my mobile devices (touch wood)

The wifi gets poor signal when you cover the top part of the back with your hand, like when you rotate it for landscape, it loses signal. Something I noticed whenever I'm on youtube
Try some of the new custom 2.3.4 ROMS. It completely fixed my deathgrip on my WifI. I don't like to name them but just look in the changelogs and you will find them,
Nope, when i am using WiFi its been good. Does this happen to you everywhere?

I just made the newest update. Yeah, I saw some new APs, but even I connected to one. It gets so easily disconnected. I think I will bring it to tmo store to check it out.
Question about wifi.
Hello guys, I have a question about the wifi.
I use cm10.1 and wifi on the phone is very weak (the same was with the factory-installed software)
Is there a way to strengthen the range of wifi?
Greeting.
poor signal wifi problem is here too!
if i am not wrong I think its an Hw issue cuz mine older galaxy gio gives me full range wifi and don't even drops.Sensation is dropping like hell!
There is a difference of wifi signal on CM JB roms VS ICS / Sense Roms. I tend to have a LOT better signal / performance with Sense roms.
And I'm not just talking about the signal strength bars, but speed, overal connectivity, stability, etc. Stock kicks ass, same goes to all ICS Sense roms (even ICS AOSP), but Jelly Bean roms I have signal degradation.
Hello Friends,
I am new here and I am interested in buying HTC Desire S
But I saw here and on various other forums/websites, that there's a major WiFi signal loss problem when the device is held in Landscape Mode
So, this problem still exists? I love this phone as it's awesome and in my budget and my main usage will be by means of Wi-Fi
Kindly help
Thanks and Regards
Even though i knew that it has serious issue of poor reception and signal drop, i still bought it as i love this phone. And the answer to your question is,
Yes. it still has poor reception.
Now its up to you if you want to buy it or not.
Is it a Hardware Defect?
I have read somewhere, after FOTA update the problem is gone/rectified a bit
Anyways, I am disappointed
I never noticed a signal drop at mine, except that it lasts a little til it gets the full signal back after returning from sleep, but that's cause of my settings.
Maybe it has to do with my radio image.
You find it (and the related thread) at my signature.

The problem was reduced after the OTA, all depends if you use the phone to type when in landscape mode (something I never do) depends on your size (or the size of your hands I reckon!)
Great device!
The Wi-Fi does indeed lessen if held in a certain manner - but because I have a very strong signal from my router it never drops out completely. I imagine it could be an issue if your base signal is low to start with.

Welcome to XDA! Yes I'd agree with previous post. Only really an issue if your router is far away to begin with. And being aware of the cause (covering the camera lens area with your hand) means that in a vast majority of cases, you shouldn't have any serious issues with signal drop.
It's a fantastic phone. Since buying mine nearly six months ago I've not had a single instance where I've had a signal drop out whilst I've been trying to use WiFi. You have to TRY to make it drop out in my experience.
Hey friends
Thanks a lot for all your responses
Just wanted to show you this video from YouTube: www . youtube . com / watch?v=qd7XdLmAFUo - See how that guy is holding the phone in Landscape Mode
I don't think, I am (rather say no one is) going to hold the phone in that way while using it on Wi-Fi
Anyways I have following questions:
1. What happens if the phone is lying on Table which is made from either of wood/metal? Will it get disconnected from Wi-Fi
2. HTC Desires S got Android 2.3.5 and HTC Sense 3.0 updates in UK and these updates are getting displayed as a pop-up notifications and are completely dependent on Mobile Operator one is using.
So, do you know/think, in India (Vodafone/AirTel), HTC gives updates by means of Network Operators. Or we have to install the Updates manually after hunting for them
Once cleared, I will jump and order the Phone online
Thanks a lot
P.S. I am new to Android

1. Never noticed any problems.
2. Maybe, but when I think no one could say^^ But if you take a look at the development section there are many sense 3 and also some sense 3.5 roms based on 2.3.5, if you don't want to wait till it's official release. Without sense you could also get Android 2.3.7 within cyanogen^^

Swyped from my Desire S
Definetly have problems here.
I have compared it to my other devices, and the desire s has the weakest signal, when far away from the router. It's a realy pain when im upstairs and want to use WiFi.
It also drops a bit when I cover it up with my hand.
The 'fixes' they have around, and built into custom kernels don't seem to work for me either
It's a real pain for me everytime I lose signal and have to reconnect!
It's a shame for me, but other than that I highly highly recommend this phone! It is really good!

It struggles compared to my other devices !
It's up to you
I personally recommended it , its great for the features and price.

It's strange, I get a good Wi-Fi signal anywhere in the house with no problems.
If I cover the plastic top rear panel of the phone with my hand, the signal strength does go down a bit, but it's never been a problem.
Maybe it's like the GPS - I find that the case I bought degrades my GPS reception, yet other people with the same type of case seem to experience no problems.
Overall though, I like this phone despite the imperfections. I don't regret buying it.
Its a very good phone for the price.
India does not have a FOTA update yet but to install custom roms or sense 3.0 you will have to root your phone.
As far as wi-fi goes i have had slight problems with the device but it was solved by using the wi-fi fix and also by custom kernels so go ahead!
I tried to make my phone lose wifi signal but only when i really cover up every part of the back of the phone i see some difference.
But when using normal i never experience any loss.

Thanks all for replies
I am bit reluctant in buying this device as my main work is from Wi-Fi and apart from my home I will be using Wi-Fi at some places where the router is kept in upper floor or far away
Anyways, I am considering buying Samsung Galaxy S Plus i9001 as it's in my budget and I can't afford SGS2 or other mobile phones which comes in price range after SGS+ and Desire S
I can live without flash and plastic body
Though I need expert advice/suggestion from Gurus/Masters here: Should I buy SGS+?

I personally hate Samsung, so go with HTC
While using the phone in a spot with poor wifi reception, I've noticed the wifi icon completely goes away sometimes. It will then pop back on shortly thereafter. Is this normal behavior when it thinks the wifi signal is completely gone?
I just picked one up yesterday and have been having issues. In my bedroom it will read 2 bars, drop to one, then shut off. Comes back on within seconds. This phone seems to have WiFi issues for a lot of users.

Same problem here, but it also happens when it says i have full bars. I need to enable best wifi performance to fix it. My gsii never had this problem...
This is exactly how mine behaves too. I'm in the room with my router so I normally have full bars (and should) but every once in a while the signal goes away and comes right back 2 seconds later. I've tested it with 2 routers, a linksys running dd-wrt and a d-link one, both have the same results.

International One X has issues too. The newest update 1.85 was supposed to fix some WiFi issues along with other bug fixes, and it doesn't seem to have helped us. Let's not assume they even know what the problem is at this point.

I don't think what I am experiencing is a hardware issue at all. Im not even moving the phone when this happens, and my phone passes the squeeze test. I'm confident this means it has to be software related.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
This is kind of an old/dead thread by now, but I just wanted to share my experience with wifi on the One X.
I'm also having problems, but I'm currently running a nightly (though very stable) build of CM10 on my One X and still have wifi issues. This COULD be hardware related, in that it's just crappy hardware (though it could also be software related if CM10 is built using wifi "code" (not really sure what the correct term for the wifi stuff in the software is ) from the stock software)
I'm sitting at work right now, for example, and every once in a while the wifi will disconnect. When connected it shows 2-3 wifi bars, when it's NOT connected, my wifi network shows up as "not in range" .
same type of thing has happened at my house. I thought my phone was defective so I traded it in for a replacement at best buy. Same issue. Such a shame becuase I really like everything else about this phone and wifi was never an issue on my last HTC device.
kernel changes affect wifi. some of the cm10 builds have known wifi issues.
i would never think of returning a phone because of an experience with a custom rom, since the phone wasn't built to run that rom.
always revert to full stock and see if you still have the issue. also updated ota/ruu are made to fix issues also. at&t rom doesn't have many stock wifi issues, but you can always run into issues with wifi access point incompatibilities.
With all the fuss about new roms, especially ICS and kernels, etc. It seems everyone has alreasy forgotten the dreaded Wi-Fi death-grip that most Desire S, including mine, is suffering.
So I guess I'm trying to call out those, who still experience it. And also maybe, who thinks they've fixed theirs. May it be with the use of hardware modding or simply software.
I don't know about you guys, but for me this issue still bugs me.
P.S.
Do not recommend on buying a new phone as I dont have the money. As I've said on my previous post that I've made, I've recently got robbed.

I know(maybe wrong but less probably) that the death grip issue is hardware related.
So i doubt we can do something about it, but for me the new radio is a good upgrade. I have a more better reception with it.

This is definitely hardware related no matter what hacks we make, it's a fact that the Desire S has poor signal...
My solution was to move the WiFi router closer to my room!
So now I don't have as much problems, but the signal still isn't as strong as other devices..

I know that we aren't talking about the same device but, a friend of mine (big Samsung fan) used for a month a Htc Incredible S

I have a fix.

Tested by wrapping a pillow to see if there's a signal drop but the signal is still full.
The same with battery pull. The 1st time i heard about the emmc problem, i pulled my battery countless of times. I remember i got a sticker somewhere that said HTC....rev2.
is there a wifi range issue? i can detect the wifi from the my room upstairs. can't connect to my neighbor's wifi though. what is the suppose wifi range? my previous nokia(s) have about the same range.
I don't have any WiFi problem. Have full recception at home and at work. On the other hand my girlfriend has a WiFi problem on her SGS with every ROM I flashed on her phone. And I recently changed the router, still the same, my DS has full reception everywhere while her SGS has bad reception. So I don't know what you are talking about. I had exacly the same reception with my old Desire phone.

With the new radio update from the leaked RUU WiFi becomes much stronger. I can even get a signal where my laptop fails. So far so good. I have to mention that those of you who are HTCdev unlocked cannot flash this via fastboot.
The so called "wifi death grip" is as mentioned before hardware related and there is nothing we can do softwarewise. The only thing possible is to hack the cam cover where the antenna is suited and make it longer. That may help but only if you know what you are doing (a specific length is needed) There are dome vids on YouTube about it but since I know "how to hold it" there is no need for me to do that.
The problem occurs especially in landscape when you cover the antenna with you hand. That's it.
Gesendet von meinem HTC Desire S mit Tapatalk
I think the deathgrip issue is mainly hardware.
Tbh, due to the design of current phones (where they put the antenna near the case), any phone has deathgrip issues, just some more than others.
