Anyone else played with this?? Its amazing what it filters. For example "***** Cat" is not acceptable but "pussycat" is.
I am a little disappointed that you can't switch the offensive language filter on and off. I say rude thing to my phone... What's the big deal? Is it really that easily offended??
I have one thing to say about this.
C'mon...

Maybe you can try saying some dirty words in other language.
say "Sha Bi" . It's a rude word in China, meaning idiot.
After reading this I tried it.
When I say '****' it appears as "##&#"
WTF, Microsoft? Why can't I curse to my friends? :|
If you say "what the ****" or "laughing my ass off" it says "wtf?" or "lmao" respectively. Pretty funny, still disappointing.

Maybe they should have an English to American-English translator. Like whenever you speak into it, no matter what, it always writes "Spot of tea?" or "Bloody good sport chap!"
Im from Spain, and I use Voice Recognition in spanish. It´s brilliant, it understands almost everything. And It recognizes rude language to, changing offensive words to #[email protected]#!# or so
There's a very good reason why "offensive" language is filtered.
Speech recognition is imprefect, and every now and then it will think you said something completely different.
If you were easily offended and said something harmless which WP7 picked up as "f*** you you f***ing c***", you'd be furious, and it would be all over the gutter press the world over - "WP7 calls user a f***ing c***!"
it will actually write suck my ****.......yea!!!
So far I find it pretty cool, but I tested it against my friends Android and his was generally more accurate, and faster. So I hope this is something we will continually see improve.
But it is nice if you are driving or something. I can see myself doing that a lot. Especially since you can initiate the command from the start screen.
Hopefully the final Mango version will have some additional refinements that improve accuracy, and I'm fairly certain that there is still some optimization that is not yet enabled in their build process, which should make the finished version faster.

This is true and a good point, but not providing an on off switch to filter offensive language is a bit of a put off, very apple, or Orwellian.

Or you could look at it as Microsoft covering themselves against potential lawsuits. There have been many lawsuits filed (and won) by incredibly stupid people for doing incredibly stupid things, but blaming someone else for their own stupidity. I could see someone turning the filter off, forgetting about it, and then getting into trouble for sending an accidental obscene text or email. And then suing Microsoft.

(Funny thing is, there are actually some (not many) people like that! xD)
I like the feature - it scores high accuracy with me (I from Northwest US so I have a bit of a "Redmond accent".)
I am hoping that Microsoft allows for custom add of swear words... this is the biggest issue with me so far on texting. There needs to be some type of language control for swear words much like they are implementing with the new XBL rating system for WP7.

I find it doubtful that they are protecting themselves from lawsuit. If they had a toggle, it would of course ship with the settings default as filter ON, and the user turning it off would be there own doing. Just like android.
I would put money on the fact that android and windows mobile has had NO lawsuits awarded against them for accidental profanity while using Voice to Text.
What's the issue Microsoft? It's the user that is manually adding those words to the dictionary by typing them in. If those words are in the user's custom dictionary, then they should also be recognized through speech to text. Not a big deal.
Does it support Ebonics?

Can someone help me find an App for Android that will enable me to send advertisements to bluetooth enabled phones. I found a few for Windows etc but none on the Android system, any ideas anyone ?
Even if such an app exist, it would require the user to accept the invitation first.
I know this would require the user to accept the invite if you were sending a file but as a contact card etc there is no requirement for the receiver to accept anything.
Basicly if you could have a file sent to constantly transmit to nearby bluetooth devices so people could choose to accept the connection that would be fine.
A bit like the old sw blueminer for windows.
there must be someone on here that knows of something that would fulfil the need since XDA devs are awesome.
Cheers Guys
SPAM.
SPAM EVERYWHERE.
To be honest that would be very annoying.
well it wouldnt be spam it would be just to promote a business. Also you would have to have your bluetooth on and discoverable so if you have it set to be found you cant complain. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
Cheers Kenny
What is so great about our country (UK) is the fact we have the freedom of choice.
Many young men and women over the years have died fighting for this fundamental right. Now, if anyone thinks this bluetooth marketing software would be annoying or even deemed as spamming, use this great option of "choosing" not to accept it.

You, sir, just won one free copy of the internets.
No guys this would be useful in lots of applications like fairs, malls, places with lots of people and lots of store fronts. Say your wondering a music fest, suddenly you get notified that so-in-so is giving out free autographed cds to the next hundred people, or in the mall a notification pops up for half off at radio shack for all cell phone accessories if you bring in this coupon, ect. If you don't want it, don't use it. I think it's pretty cool.
OP, is that the track of this app you were talking about?

Yeah, I think in terms of a small scalled run (ie comic book shop), this type of marketing is rather hit or miss. Most people have feature phones. What you need more of is whats called captive marketing. Like an add on a bus or train.
And guys whats with all the hatred? In the type of format of a cell phone, it would be illegal to push something to it without the owners consent. If you don't want it, don't take it. This is the same thing as somebody handing out flyers on the street. If you take it, you have consented to it, are you gonna start yelling at the guy handing em out saying he's ruining your trip down the road with spam? If anything, I tend to say something to people throwing the leaflets on the ground, that's ruining my walk.

A similar thing is already used but with sms location based marketing.
Here in the uk, co-op stores recently had a trial where customers on O2 within 0.5 miles of a store could recieve a free bottle of dr pepper.
http://www.kamcity.com/namnews/asp/newsarticle.asp?newsid=59471
Could be very interesting to recieve such messages whilst wondering around town.
Completely different to the suggestion of bluetooth marketing because sms marketing could be controlled by the networks to ensure spammy spamsters dont annoy their customers, and ads could be targeted easier due to the info the networks hold.
Never the less its a very intersting concept and I doubt many people would have a objection to recieving such messages, providing there was a optout once a message is recieved from a store which they dont use.
Personally I dont think bluetooth marketing would work as it has a very limited range, the majority of people dont walk around with bluetooth on, and those that do wont have it descoverable, and just have their headsets, earphoes etc paired to their devices.
forgot about the bluetooth bombers!!!
I used to go through a big box retail store with it on, and watch all the managers and sales staff pick up their phone and go, "what the f...."
then loop around and do it again!!! LOL, I was a ____ when I was young
Kinda like the apple. Thoughts? I have my genius button open-up vlingo car mode. Interesting but a bit finicky with exterior noises, bath room fans, other people talking and loud enviroments.

I tried EVA. And for about 36 hours she was my new retarded best friend. But then her constant ” I hear what you are saying but do not know how to interpret it” drove me nuts.
I finally uninstalled it. One key thing is to get the SVOX TTS voice add on because android's native Pico voice is about as attractive as the computer's voice from the old star trek episodes. Then you can make the woman's voice sound low and throaty, like a sultry marilyn monroe, or higher pitched and slow, like a preteen ingenue...whatever your fetish.
I told EVA to call me ”master”, but it felt too much like I was in a bad I Dream of Jeannie episode.
About the only thing she every did successfully for me was launch apps. But that is hardly worth it.
She just couldn't seen to understand much, yet I know it is google's voice recognition software...and it works great for dictating texts... So I don't know why EVA didn't work better. She had some good reviews.
Now I am just using the free app ” Voice Actions” by pannous, and it works great. I can say ”send a text to bill smith that I will be
10 minutes late” and its done. No backtalk.
But maybe I have been lucky so far.
I do hope they improve this technology quickly though, it is pretty cool to have someone announce your calls and call you by your first name.

Makes me wonder ...
Do you release something half ass
OR
do you perfect the programming.
wait for supporting hardware
field test it
then market it like you invented it.
DAM.
Imagine if the car industry wasnt regulated ... China puttin out half assed Heads up displays and German engineers would look like they jus perfected a feature instead of introduce it (Heads Up Display).
I think the debate between putting out half-assed (or as google calls it, beta) products, versus perfecting something first (or getting it better then average) before releasing it as a product has always been a core philosophy difference between apple and google.
The thing is, the benefit of goggle's strategy should be that all of the features the users' want..whether new, or improvements to existing features, should be able to be made by google so that by the time the ”perfected”.apple version is released, the google version should be of greater utility. It may not be as sleek or as shiny, but with input from a lot of actual users earlier in development, google's strategy is better.
I think the problem this time is that google had released some pretty good voice recognition software, and it had a default TTS, nobody really seemed to be clamoring for this type of thing.
So like the iPad almost, Apple envisions this concept and releases it, and now everybody wants it.
But if everybody wants it, why then during the last 12 to 18 months has no one been saying 'hey google, we really want to be able to have a voice operating feature integrated deeper into the next android version'.
I think its just that apple thought that this feature could be a ”must have” and they ran with it and developed it to this level.
Hopefully google will now realize it needs to catch-up in this area. Because to get as good as SIRI, you can't create it in an app. It needs to start with the OS.

This is called successful marketing. You get something that nobody wanted before and nobody really needs, and make people think they want it ASAP. Just like the iPad in tablet area, for which I'm still trying to think of a good, worthy use case.
Apple learned to do it very well, including preparing the crowd to swallow any crap they feed them, no matter how useless. Props to them.
Actually, unlike tablets, there is a good use case for voice commands - operate the phone while driving. I do recall missing that feature (that also works properly).. once or twice a year.

VERY VALID points. Im no Jim Cramer (financial analyst) but i think it boils down to ... Where is the focus and investor dollars being distributed.
Google has this translate app that is so good. although not every language is supported ... its nice to know i can have a convo in real time with my mexican neighbors LOL.
I used it and its bad ass.
I think Apple and Google love to do things opposite of each other. One markets with noise and distributes exclusively. The other goes by word of mouth and makes products accessible to anyone.
I look forward to ICS.
I was playing around with 'Voice Actions', testing the limits of its ability to provide me information and asking trick questions like 'please make me dinner', to which she (jeannie) replied ' Do I look like a microwave oven?'
The most clever response I have received is when I requested of her 'sing me a song'. To this she began to recite 'A Bicycle Built For Two' a la HAL. If only I could get her to slowly wind down and say 'my mind is going. I can feel it.' That would have made my night.

I would say it is, yes. But it also shows something else: The power of Apple marketing. Siri used to be an app in the store, and nothing. Then Apple buys the company, touts Siri as some "revolutionary" thing they created, and look at what's happening - suddenly Siri is the best thing since sliced bread and all other vendors should fear it. Yeah right. If you ask me, Siri is a fad that will quickly blow over. Even with Apple's marketing.
Joke, may be you haven't seen the power of SIRI, it is just I always see my sister talking to her phone and she said it is very useful especially when sending email, he will just say "send mike an email, Can you put up the dialyzer so I can start to dialyze when I got there tomorrow" she does not need to go in the mail app, look for the email addresss, click on the message box and type the message, same as text, I think it is not that useful, but now that I saw my sister doing that, I think I might sell my Infuse 4g and try the 4s, come on I did not post this to hurt your egos which now obviously hurt because you bought an Android device, I too bought Infuse 4g but I am open on any device that will benefit me.
The difference between me and some guys here, I am open minded on what will benefit me, and some guys defend Android like it is their company and want to beat Apple, Rim, and Window phone 7. And they don't want to let people speak that they made a mistake buying Android or they just love their android.

totally agree with this post. Until google puts more thought into the UX it will be behind imo. It has all the features but they're so haphazardly tossed together that using it is a chore.
As much as it is kinda cool in the right situations I see this being just another reason to own a cell signal jamming box. People are already rude enough to make a call while in speaker phone.

I sure hope SIRI isn't submitting your posts, because if that's the case it's completely worthless.
You do realize SIRI is just an app right? If you think an app can put apple 5 years ahead of android, none of your posts should be taken seriously. In my opinion, the SUPERUSER app puts android infinitely ahead of apple. Android has personal assistant apps, and I am quite sure the developers will be working hard on them now. Apple has nothing to the likes of Superuser and never will.

No this is not old news at all. This subject is still being looked into and things are coming to light about it more and more. Yes this is very much on the Sensation. Me personally I am glad someone started a thread on it as it is something I feel everyone should be concerned with.
If you want to learn more about it just go to the XDA Portal and type in a search for Carrier IQ, CIQ, or just IQ and you will see there has been several stories in the portal about it and the dev that is trying to bring all of this CIQ BS into the view of the masses.
Also I have not looked to see but I imagen that there is some custom ROMs for the Sensation that has the CIQ removed from it. I beleive any of the CM7 based ROMs do not have it and it may be more you will just have to read the first posts in the thread by the chef that cooked the ROM.

The ROM just cleans bloatware and other things in HTC Sense to help the ROM run smoother. All devices have this CIQ on them, it is not an app but several things that are hidden deep in the ROM and has to be cooked out of the ROM. ASOP ROMs do not have it. Go read this article by azrienoch on it. Make sure to click on the links in the article too then you will have a better understanding of what I mean. You will also see why it is such a big deal.

So, because tracking software is being put on many devices we use every day, we should not worry about it?
Perhaps if consumers were made more aware of things like this, they could stem the tide of invasive technology.

CIQ is definitely a whole new species of logging software, put onto your device by your friendly network operator.
I dare to say that there is absolutely no comparable spying software case so far. If you´d have fully studied about the software this thread is mentioning, you most probably would not have written your statement.
A key logger which records *everything* you type without encryption? A key logger which reads your SMS/test message even before you read it? Come on. This kind of stuff is *definitely" not "in everything". It may be in all network operator subsidized mobile phones (not only Android, but also Nokia and Blackberry affected) in the USA - but definitely not here in Europe.
Here, we actually have laws against such software - especially if it´s distributed by large organizations like network operators, this could result in multi-billion dollar fines. People here in Europe are not wiser, but they tend to fight a bit more against "big brother" who might be "watching you".

i know what it does, and i still stand on my statement, as you and i type every letter on our keyboard it si being key logged to thats the sad truth of this an everything, no matter how you look or want to make aware to anyone its still exist and as technology grows so will this.. so either cry and complain bout it everytime some like this comes up or just say i know the fact im being watched but what else more can i do.. cause there is nothing you can do.. your normal house phones are being logged, not lot know this but there is KEY words that if you say in a conversation it picks up and sends a alert to the proper authorities..
its something to look and jus get over...
Also think bout it, when something goes truly bad, say a murder uses a phone officials can pick up they logging of calls and texts and read them back, so this loggin has been around for awhile so i dont understand why its becoming sucha big deal when its been around

I wonder how this affects the speed and responsiveness of the phone's OS?

Yes that is true what you said but most people already know that cops can get your records from a phone company with a search warrant depending on how long that company keeps those records.
This is deferent, a third party collecting all information of what you do on your phone without your consent or knowledge is wrong. This company is also not the government so what right do they have without your consent.
Yes on a console, a PC, and1st and 2nd party apps on your phone you give consent for them to use various monitoring techniques but you have a choice, here with carrier IQ you are not giving that choice it is there and you have to use a crowbar to get it out of your phone.
I'm no fanatic but I do believe in the constitution. It is your right to give away your privacy but it is not for someone else to take it away from you.

You keep saying it is nothing you can do about it, well you could not be more wrong. You can take and S-off your device, unlock your device, root, or what ever the proper method is for your particular device to be able to flash a custom recovery. Then simple download and flash any AOSP ROM. This will give you a device without CIQ.
Now you must not have read the official withdraw of the S&D letter to TrevE that IQ posted a link to on their website. Go yo the XDA Portal and have a look a the latest article by orb3000. Obviously the message has gotten to IQ and I would say more than likely the Carriers. Yeah some say that the power users are a small group but it is a group with great power. When the people that a large force in building enthusiasm for devices and OS's speak out against something that they do not like, people tend to listen. Therefore it has a large chance of affecting sales, new contract signings, and contract renewals.
This whole attitude of people not being able to do anything about something people consider wrong, is such a epic fail. I mean if no one never tries to bring change to something then yeah sure nothing will happen. And the powers that be gains that much more control. But luckily people are starting to get tired of never having change and are starting to do something about this messed up world of ours.
Last thing, if you think this is a simple logging system. Again you could be more wrong. This CIQ has full access to your device, as well as full rights. It can not be killed, forced close, or uninstall. I will not go into any further details, but this is far from what IQ and the carriers want you to think it is.

Carrier is a global company. The company does have offices in London...
http://www.carrieriq.com/company/index.htm
And under the heading "About Carrier IQ"
http://www.sys-con.com/node/1865183
So European phones may have CIQ installed depending on what the mobile provider. Something that our friends over the pond
should research.

Hi,
That is very well put.
If you sit back and do nothing, then nothing will get done.
The more people complain about this, the more something is likely to be done.
As far as the carriers are concerned, they probably think that no one knows that this stuff is even installed!
Its important to show our awareness of this situation, and complain about it.
How about Logging TestApp? I heard that this app helps you erase all the logging apps in the phone, including this one.

Wow, at first i was reading this thread and had the same, "well whatever" attitude. But after just a couple of minutes googling and reading, this is really messed up. CarrierIQ has issued a cease and dismiss order against the guy in the video, along with threats to sue if he does not publicly apologize.
I don't want to start a war here...This post is not to get people riled up, nor is this meant to be a punching bag on apple users, but I was browsing youtube and stumbled across this and couldn't stop laughing! I figured you all would enjoy it as well
While very extreme and supremely funny, there are some interesting points made here.

Sheesh this was a total waste of 5 minutes of my time. From the sidekick using a Mac book during an Apple rant to the talking head prick who does not know Tunisia, Egypt, and Syria from Iran.
Not even mad. nothing wrong with Apple..
Apple > Microstain imo..
Apple is for the person who wants a piece of hardware that WORKS and doesn't break.
I have nothing against apple. If I have the choice of using Windows or using Mac, I'll probably choose a Mac. While I don't like the iPhone, as many people here don't, 98% of people who aren't geeks like us and who just want a smartphone that does what they believe what a smartphone should do, then who am I to say what they should get. Now, I always recommend people to get Android devices, yes, but I'm not going to be a d*** about it. I honestly see no difference from a person who uses an iPhone and someone who uses an unrooted Android phone. They both just want a phone that works.

Didn't mean to make you upset about it. That's what I found hilarious about it. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
His rant is a little off. He goes off about Apple, but really misses the points on why the company and its products are bad for the current technology market.
Apple isn't bad because they make over priced and locked down products, it's the persons choice if they want to purchase said products or not. Where Apple goes bad is trying to patent everything (including things they didn't come up with) and sue the competition if anything even comes close to something "they own" forcing other companies to find ways around all their patents.
Competition helps bring new technology to life as each company tries to out do the other. Apple doesn't want to compete, they want to stop other companies from being able to bring their product to the market which in turn forces technological progress to slow down.
Sell your over priced and locked down products to the people that want them, but don't take away my choices so I am forced to buy your over priced and locked down products.

The "it just works" argument, in my mind, is a valid one. Yes, most cellphones can call and text without issue, but it's about the simplicity as a whole. While all of the options to mess about with is great for us, I feel as though the average person only needs phone, text, camera, browser, and games--- and for those to work great. Even if they had the option for more, would they use it? Take a look at many average person's android phone. It is a complete mess- millions of notifications, status bar completely filled, probably a malware app on there or two. All of those things lead to instability. I just think that iOS is more average person proof.

In that case im talking about OSX > Windoze.
In the phone sense, apple is for people who want a great phone that works fine out of the box, and doesn't really "need" to be unlocked/jailbroken.
Now anyone running android that doesn't root should just get an iPhone in my honest opinion
If you don't root your android phone, it too "just works."
I have both an iPhone and an android phone, and I'm really happy having both. I prefer the iPhone for games and movies, and I use the android for produtivity. I know alot of people with this setup and its becoming more and more common.

I don't know anybody with an iphone and an android phone for that purpose. Come to think of it, the only people I know with two phones are people with their personal and work devices. If I wanted a setup similar to that it would be an android and an ipad. Cheaper and more real estate for gaming. Seems like a lot of money to have two phones even if you are switching the sim card between both.
I suppose a reason could be is that you are feeling in a gaming mood when you leave your house and don't want to lug two devices with you. Or you are going to a meeting and don't want to lug two devices. Still though, ipad is cheaper and more real estate.
