[Q] Camera won't focus close up - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a stock Nexus S running GRJ22 and I've found that the camera will not focus close up, no matter if it's set to auto or macro. This means that apps like Dell Service Tag Scanner, QR Droid, Google Goggles or Barcode Scanner won't work. Is this a hardware fault or is it a software fault? I've tried clearing the cache and application data, but nothing has worked.

Recently i tried making that kind of photos and stumbled across that problem. I tried camera 360 with manual focus . It wasn't much better, but it's a solution that works. Unfortunately for the googles it won't work... but i have never had problem with it...

I have the same problem as well. But I did managed to get only one OK, then no more ?

My camera can focus perfectly up close. If you find you can't try enabling flash. It could be that there isn't enough light
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
CM9 Kang (Build 6 of 2.1)
Eugene's Kernel (Speedy-7)
OC 1000/100 (conservative)
Live OC 100

The old men said "85% of digital problems are because of software , 15% for the hardware..." so if all software aspects are exluded ...

It was a hardware fault in my case. I had it replaced and it was fine.

Sounds like an issue with your kernel. Try a kernel reflash The kernel handles low-level hardware.
I'm assuming the camera wasn't listed as a bug in the Zeus thread? Try to include a few specifics like what phone you're running also
Good luck!
zeus 6 on Samsung Infuse, it flashes the infusion kernal as part of its intstall. I did not see it listed as an issue but there are over 500 pages to that thread. can someone recommend a better kernal. I tried a camera from the market but no help.

[Q] Face unlock ROM NEXUS S

hey guys . i'm rooting my phone for first time. and i want a custom ROM for my nexus s 9023 ,, i wanted to know which rom has face unlock working .
thaning you in the mean time awaiting your positive response
Codename android has it and it works well in light conditions. Don't use it myself though. I'm sure most ics roms have it too though.
Sent from me to you via the tinternet thingamebob.
AOKP Milestone is also work.
But i won't use in NS.
NS front cam.... it suxxs
It could't recognize my face most place at all

try Bigxie rom or CM9 + Matr1x kernel.
worked only 3 times and then never again
I tried it on the Nexus S with stock ICS with this file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405790
I never used it again either.
I never could get face unlock to work. Someone on these forums had recommended Visidon AppLock though and it's great! Quite customisable in the paid version & it's also a Tasker plugin so you can have it active whenever you like. Mine activates when I'm not near my wifi.
I have tried this on the first ICS sandwich ROM i tried. I believe it was CM9. It was extremely unreliable on all but the brightest conditions.
Its pointless. Any from dev that's tries to implement it is wasting time, even with great written camera drivers the phones camera hardware sucks. Just get a gnex or sgsII if its important.

Infuse front facing camera + hangout not working

Hi all.
I am trying to figure out why when I start a Google hangout, my wife's Infuse refuses to use the front facing camera, it defaults to the rear camera. Everything else works, but would like it to have the ffc as the default.
It doesn't even give me a choice to flip to which camera to use during the hangout.
It is a rooted + unlocked Infuse ATT, using the stock froyo 2.2.1 rom.
Thanks
Heeter

i dont think froyo has the camera framework for front facing video outside the camera program. the first version of android to support that was gingerbread because of its launch device, the nexus s. you should upgrade to gingerbread and try again. though to have it in a google hang out, you might even need ics or higher. im not sure.
Thanks for that response,
I was kind of figuring that I will have to upgrade the ROM for it to work.
I was kind of hoping that I could avoid it.
Thanks again,
Heeter

Jellybean (CM/AOKP/Virtuous) Maps/Photoshpere Bug (Report Here)

Hello,
I have the following problem:
I experience visual artifacts when using two-finger rotate in Google Maps, also Photoshpere is really acting up... the images flicker...
Not all devices have it, as a matter of fact there are few of them (reported). Let's try to collect as much data as we can in order to find the cause of this and maybe a fix. I'll start.
HTC One S
Color: Gradient Blue
HBOOT:1.14.0002
Radio:1.06es.50.02.31
Jun 11 2012, 14:36:28
It's recommended to attach a logcat with the problem.
The problem allways happen when try to rotate Gmaps with two fingers, and photoshpere gets crazy especially after taking 1st photo.
It seems like an accelerometer problem, but accelerometer utilities seems to report the sensors working fine, so maybe a GPU driver problem.
C'mon guys, let's get this fixed
For the flicker have you tried changing debug.composition.type=dyn to debug.composition.type=gpu? I also had the same issue with that camera but only tried it when it come out, have you tried other packs that have it?

I've tried many packs... i will try those and report back. The thing that scares me is that this happens on Virtuous Rom also (which is almost stock build with HTC jb libs), and this may mean that i will never have fully working jb not either from HTC.

What you get both issues on Virtuous? that can't be good.

yes... that's also what i'm afraid of...
Keep in mind the camera is for 4.2, not 4.1, and I doubt we'd ever get stock camera on official Sense.

ok, that's not a problem, i can live without photoshpere, but the fact is Google Maps also have this problem and I need GMaps...
I know that at least 3 others reported this problem (and i'm sure that are many others who didn't test for it) I wonder where are they now...
I started this thread hoping that if other users reported it, the devs would try to solve this, but i think i'll just have to wait for HTC to give us JB and see if i still have the problem (but I am really concerned that I might have it). What's wrong with this One series? so many bugs (and not minor): cases chipping, helicoptering bug, sound issues, performance issues (one x), this problem....
I reported in another thread that I have this problem and I do, when using photosphere, I've seen it, although if I keep my movements nice and slow and steady, it seems to hold together.
I haven't seen any problem in Google Maps though, what happens to you in there?
Cheers

when i rotate the map with two fingers i get visual artifacts
I have the same problem on photospere, on maps I have no graphical problems, but the magnet sensor seams to change it's direction sometimes. Had this on CM10, and now on 4.1 Sense+.
Edit: I mean I have the orientation problem on photosphere. My screen does not flicker.
I have this same exact problem with an HTC One XL. I have not found a fix for it.
I've tried flashing every flavor of jellybean there is. It oddly seems to not happen if I use a sense version of jellybean. But I hate sense and want vanilla android.
AOKP, AOSP, modded, unmodded, doesn't matter. I get this annoying graphics glitch when I try to scroll around using maps or photosphere.
I hope it's not purely hardware related, and that there's an easy software fix for it.

727r with CM10.1

hey guys... i've searched on this for a bit now but havent found people with similar issues
Got my 727r ... which is using CM10.1 nightlies... been updating once a week since january
the one issue that drives me nuts is that i cant use my front camera... in stock camera app if i switch to front camera gallery crashes and then i cant open the camera app at all anymore... if i use another camera app i just get black feed from the front camera.... i have the latest Gapps and currently the latest nightly build...
if i revert to 10.0 the camera works again.
anyone else running into this?

Ok... Finally had some time to do more investigating on the issue and things only got worse.
I do a full wipe/clean install on all my flashes.... that means wipe all caches, wipe the isd cards, and factory reset
anyways... flashed with the official stock ROM for rogers in Odin and the front camera seems to be broken in there too now... so just to to test i then wiped everything, and installed CM10 to see if it still works... no dice... now the front camera is broken in all roms ive tested, and non standard camera apps exhibit this behaviour too... I'm starting to think this is a hardware issue which would really suck.
All in all i'm out of ideas short of taking it to someone who can look at the hardware.
