[Q] can you unlock 2.3.4 without complete wipe? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I managed to root 2.3.3 using instructions on this site and flashing clockwork and then installing su. It was a loophole that allowed su access without a complete wipe and since all I wanted was su rights for titanium etc it suited me
The current tutorial for 2.3.4 seems to only have the option to do a complete wipe using fastboot oem unlock - has the old loophole been blocked?
Thanks in advance

It's been asked before. No

[Q] HBoot 0.98.0002 no downgrade or S-Off needed just for root

Question: How comes that everyone tells people they have to downgrade their phones or install 3rd party hboots just to get root?
Maybe I'm missing something here or did just not read carefully enough but if you just want to install superuser and su or let's say gtalk 1.3 with video enabled then the temp root solution with adb and fre3vo is working quite well for this.
After that you still have your stock rom with all your settings. Ok you don't have a custom recovery and no rooted adb but if you really just wanted root access on stock rom this ist the cleanest and fastest way.
....until you reboot that is

nope! With installing su and superuser using the temp root method you will keep root access after reboots.
and you're sure your phone is S-ON? Weird... Anyway installing a custom recovery would (normally) be out of the question and thus installing custom firmware
Yes for custom firmware and recovery S-Off is still needed. I just wanted to stop people from removing important security features without thinking about it just because everyone says install this and remove that.

[Q] Root Questions

Hello everyone,
I am interested in rooting my sensation but I want to stay on stock ROM and do not want to lose OTA updates.
So there are few questions (sorry if they have been asked before but I couldnt find any answers for them on the forum):
1. If I unlock the bootloader the official way that HTC provides via htcdev website, will I be able to root my phone given the phone will stay in S-ON status?
2. If I set S-OFF the way that is described here on the forums, will I be forced to install custom recoveries like clockwork to be able to get root?
I just want everything to stay stock but with root. Also OTAs are important to me.
Thank you,
Yash

- You can't root without S-OFF and a Custom Recovery..
- SuperUser binary files (root) are installed through the custom recovery using a signed su zip file..
- You can't install a custom recovery without S-OFF.
- You can't install OTA updates with a custom recovery.
BUT:
- You can S-OFF (I recommend using Revolutionary).
- Install the su zip file (to give you root access).
- Install your stock recovery again using Android Recovery Manager.
- Now you'll be able to install OTA updates and have root access at the same time. (If you delete any system application, OTA updates will fail though.)
1 Click Root for Sensation?
Is there an APK that will accomplish a 1 Click Root such as the one for the EVO?
'ONE CLICK ROOT for the EVO... a simple .apk file and run it'

Thanks for your answer. Is there any reason why one cannot be developed? What would it be worth if someone developed one? I am sure there any many people who would be willing to pay for this. I for one, would be willing. any takers?

[Q] Can I obtain Root on the stock ROM and keep over the air updates?

if so can anyone point out a tutorial?
Hello,
If your stock with only a custom recovery, you will need to download the OTA zip file and flash it via custom recovery.
However, if you have a custom kernel/mods installed then you will need flash the stock images and then flash the OTA zip via recovery.
Yes
You'll get the official OTA updates as long as you have the stock ROM(even if it is rooted) and Recovery.
But you may lose the root after the update.

You need to flash the SuperSU zip via recovery to have root access. Flashing supersu doesn't wipe your device's configuration or files. Unlocking the bootloader wipes it!
Use Helium to backup your apps when you're unrooted. Once you have root access, I would recommend using Titanium Backup!

the bootloader has to be unlocked to flash/boot to twrp/cwm, which is required for root.
please read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508292

I think you should head over to general section and read the Stickies first before tinkering with your device!
This is the flow...:
1. Unlock the bootloader (Wipes everything off the phone)
2. Flash custom recovery
3. Flash SuperSU.
Hoorah! You're rooted!
Rooting
And if your not sure how to root your phone i would really read up on it first or you may brick it,untill your sure you can do it.......If it aint bust dont fix it

[Q] Just want to use the "Titanium Backup" app

I am using Stock Kernel and CM 12.1 on my Oneplus One. I just want to use the "Titanium Backup" app (that running on Root device only). What exactly I need to do with my phone: ???
Just Unlock my Bootloader and run SuperSU ?
Can I still be able to use Rom OTA with the Unlock Bootloader ?
Thanks!
Too late for Titanium backup now!
Please read this guide very carefully. It covers everything you need to know: [GUIDE] Unlock/Root/Flash for OnePlus One
To answer your question briefly, in order to use Titanium Backup, you need a rooted device.
To root your device you need:
unlocked bootloader
custom recovery (i.e. TWRP )
When you unlock your bootloader, you will lose all your data - your phone will be wiped!
Long story short, it is now too late for you to use Titanium backup to backup your apps & data.
Please note that there are methods to backup your apps which do not require root access, but you will have to use adb & the command line - not for everyone, and not what you had in mind I imagine.
You might just want to make a list of your favourite apps, backup their data & settings as much as you can, and then once you've got some sort of backup done, proceed to unlock your bootloader (and wipe your device), install TWRP, gain root, and profit.
Once again: Please read this guide very carefully. It covers everything you need to know: [GUIDE] Unlock/Root/Flash for OnePlus One

First thanks for your answer! Do I lose the rom OTA Update after unlock my bootloader and install TWRP ? Do I must change to the TWRP recover or I can use the stock one?
Sent from my A0001 using xda premium
You're welcome. You cannot use the stock recovery, and you will not receive OTAs once you've unlocked your bootloader, installed TWRP, and rooted.
Trust me, you are not missing out on anything - OTAs will be rare, and the quality of the OS provided by Cyanogen is low.
Once you have TWRP installed, you can choose to install other ROMs. I highly recommend XenonHD. Light, stable, AOSP-based (not a CM clone), with full layers support, and a balanced feature-set.
There are many ROMs available for the OnePlus One for you to choose from, and you could also run CM or OxygenOS - it's up to you.
Just make sure you read & follow Heisenberg's guide, and you'll be fine. :good:
Since you're coming from Cyanogen's lollipop build, you should pay special attention to the note at the end of section 2 of Heisenberg's guide ('How To Install A Custom Recovery On Your Device').

Unlocking your bootloader has no effect on the ability to take OTA updates. However, having a custom recovery and root do. If you want to take an OTA in future you just need to flash the stock recovery and the stock system.img and OTA's will work perfectly.

This isn't entirely true, the unlocked bootloader doesn't matter.

You're God damn right.
That's what I meant, but thank you for clearing up precisely what precludes one from receiving OTA updates. :good:

Since I just want to use my favorite Titanium Backup but still using OTA update I would appreciate if you'LL guide me what is the easier way to do that.
I know now that to Unlocking my bootloader has no effect on the ability to take OTA but the custom recovery and root do so where I can find link to the stock recovery and the stock system.img and do I must to flash them after the Unlocking my bootloader ?

In order to use Titanium you need to unlock your bootloader, then flash TWRP recovery, then use TWRP recovery to flash SuperSU. You'll have root now and Titanium will work. Once you get to the point where you want to take an OTA you can extract the system.img and the recovery.img from the fastboot zip which you'll find here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2906746
Flash them and then OTA updates will work. There are detailed instructions in my guide:

Root Nexus 5 Marshmallow without wiping

Hey guys,
I would like to change my LTE Bands with some software and guide I found here. I need root for this.
I am willing to root but not wiping data, if it can't be done without it, I would rather not root it.
Can you guys point me to a guide for Marshmallow? Found some on KK and some on Lollipop, none on Marshmallow.
Thanks a lot!
Dan
Almost the same as LP. Install or boot to TWRP recovery and use one of these solutions:
1. Use a custom kernel and flash SuperSU 2.52
2. Flash SuperSU 2.62
User data aren't wiped when rooting a Nexus 5.
EDIT: you must have an unlocked BL though. If it's not the case, you can't root without wiping user data.
BL is unfortunatelly locked. So basically I do need to wipe it. I think I would rather live without 4g until I upgrade to N5X.
If your bootloader is locked is no way to root without wipe data..to root M we need to flash custom kernel and custom recovery..its mean we need to unlock bootloader and it will wipe our data in intetnal storage
