[Q] Help- bootlooping! - Milestone XT720 General

Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster.
So last night my XT720 froze in the middle of doing a bunch of market updates and I had to do a battery pull. Now it won't boot- it just loops the M logo boot animation.
My phone is rooted, but stock rom. I used Link2SD with a partition on my SD card and Milestone Overclock but other than that not much in the way of unusual stuff.
How do I fix it? I've looked at how to do the factory wipe using recovery mode, but I just wanted to make sure that with the phone being rooted this wouldn't mess anything up. I don't care if I have to start over with rooting and all my apps and stuff- I just don't wanna mess it up more than it already is.

I think your sdcard got corrupted and needs some care. Take it out and put it in a computer directly and back it up. Then either reformat it or run filesystem repairs. Were you using Link2SD with ext or FAT?

I used ext. Thanks, I'll give that a shot first.

first tke out ure sd card n chck if it works.....if d prob still persists den u have 2 use rsd lite to install the original rom....

Well, quick filesystem check/repair using PartedMagic fixed it! Thanks Mioze7Ae, you were right on.

Is my Thunderbolt bricked?

Hey, everyone. How's it going? I have been running Gingervitis 1.1 (?) and last night I went to uninstall an app that I had installed from the market. My phone froze up and is worthless at the moment. I can boot up, but I cant do anything. I see my wallpaper and the taskbar (even it is a little off), but that is it. If I hold power and volume down while booting it goes to the menu, but it automatically chooses to update the radio. I can't choose to do anything else. Wtf? Can I fix this?
Also, the phone will ring, but I can't do anything about that either.
I appreciate any help.
Hmm not sure I can be much help but you could try and get into recovery from there, rename a file say maybe a Rom to PG05IMG so when in hboot it tries to load it? hey just trying to help here and not sure it gonna work but could try a couple more ideas until someone smarter pops in. Sure your not bricked though.
If you can get into hboot you're not bricked. It sounds like you have a PG5... file still on your sd card. Take it out of the phone and load into your computer to delete that file. Put the card back in and you should now be able to select recovery in the hboot menu.

last i checked, a brick just sat there. so if your phone does more than set there, no it's not. it can probably be fixed. good luck.
power down your phone, take out your sd card and insert it into a computer. delete the pg#### file from the root of your sdcard. insert card in to phone, power back up.
try taking out your SD card and connecting it to computer, rename the PG05img to something else. then you should be able to hboot and get into recovery
Awesome. I'll go buy a card reader and see what I can do. I will post back in a bit.
Thanks to everyone so far.

After your able to get back into recovery. Try to run logcat from adb and see where it errors out after you reboot. If you can determine the broken app, you can uninstall it from adb. If not just reinstall the Rom from recovery. If all fails wipe and install clean. Good luck

Thanks everyone. All is well now. I renamed PG05IMG and went from there as suggested. I went ahead and installed BAMF Sense 3 instead of going back to Gingervitis.
I had not backed up... oops. No worries though, but I will do it now.
Thanks again

One more "Oh noooo... Wait really? WHEW!!!! It's not bricked afterall." save on XDA.
They saved me once too. Glad you're up and running. Patience is key and so many people around here seem to be so quick to send the phone back, blame the developer and post how the rom bricked their phone, then start a thread about "Rumor Verizon is tracing all phones that spontaneously combusted to rooting. Am I getting Busted?"
Again, nice job on the save
Rooted Thunderbolt on BAMF Sense 3.0 RC 4 with MR2 radio and latest dreamKernel.

Device stuck on HTC logo

I have tried to flash a wifi patch that was meant to solve problems with connections, and when i chose it from the list in Rom manager, when it rebooted into recovery it got stuck on the HTC logo, but before i flashed it. Now, i have a very old backup that i restored but i want everything that i had before my device couldnt boot itself. i backed up through recovery my current rom that i wasnt able to boot, and i wonder if there is some way to fix it with the files of .img that i have backed up. I know that the patch was responsible for this error because after i restored to an old backup i tried it there aswell and i got the same result doing the same thing...

Hmmm... one of those things huh? The only way I know is to restore the corrupt nandroid and then without restarting, flash the original ROM.zip of your rom (the one that you first used to do a clean install) right on top of this while in recovery. What this will do is to replace the files from the patch with the original files that camera with the ROM.
Try it and post your results.
And please get into the habit of creating nandroid backups before flashing anything...no matter how small the patch is or how confident you are that nothing will go wrong...
Hope this helps.

flashing error

Okay so i am using a stock galaxy s 4g
i rooted it so that is done i changed my recover so i can get into cwm i got like version 3.something
i am trying to install valhalla black edition
i seen valhalla final says KJ6 kernal
so i am assuming i need to go into cwm and update file from sd card
so i do this but my phone wont mount my sd card
i even tired to update the file from the sd of the rom i downloaded
but when i went to mount my sd card it says cant mount error
when i seen the instructions its UMMU im assuming it means this
unmount
mount
mount
unmount
the last unmount is my system and it says i cant unmount that
what am i missing???
i need to get the kernal then the rom install can someone help i read the bible and all but it doesnt really cover this well not clearly anyways....
any am i right the kernal is flashed the same way as a rom?
what steps did you follow to get root & cwm installed? which version of android do you currently have installed?
Since you're using a stock sgs4g I'm gonna assume you're on froyo. You need to be on Gingerbread before you can flash a GB rom. If you were to flash a gb rom through cwm you wouldn't get the froyo bootloader which means you'd have a very unhappy phone. It would work in the sense that it would turn on and then do nothing.
If you follow my GB Starter Pack guide (there's a link in my signature) you'll get your phone ready for Valhala Black.
Remember to read all the instructions carefully once before you attempt anything, then re-read them following the steps.

Did you reformat the sd card for Fat 32? Odin can take awhile. If your phone is recognized, and you loaded the right files without changing anything, then you should be fine. Just don't worry, get a magazine, and do battery pulls when instructed.

its not because even if i try to flash the kernal thats in beta thru cwm it says bad as well any file i try to flash it says error
it first says updating or whatever then opening then cant open error (bad) installation aborted. no matter what i try to open no matter what rom it is
its annoying me i have no idea what i have done wrong i tried to reinstall everything and still nothing
say i wanted to start from step one all over again even though my phone is pretty much blank since it wont load up so i do a factory wipe or something? so nothing is left behind to ensure i get a good install?
i am pretty much willing to try anything just to even get my phone back
thank you for the replys i really appreciate it
P.S. i cant do a restore because i was running froyo and since i did the GB starter stuff it says md5 mismatch so thats out the question

I was reading back through FB's GB Starter Pack to re-familiarize myself with it. As much as I hate to say it, I'd go back through it one more time from the beginning; don't skip any steps. That way you know you're getting a clean install all the way around.
Out of curiosity, does the phone boot up? If so, what does it say in Settings --> About Phone:
Firmware version
Baseband version
Kernel version
?

If it's sticking there, then there's a good chance you have either a Froyo ROM with GB boot loaders or vice versa. Yeah, if you can get into recovery do a factory reset then go back through the GB Starter Pack one more time. I'm sure you'll be successful. Just be patient as you go through the steps.

Yeah, you're boot looping. Are you sure you flashed the KJ6 files from FB's starter pack? It really sounds like the wrong boot loaders are in place.

No, don't start over. Check Google for FAT32 repair tools. Then put the SD card in a reader connected to the PC & run the tool. It'll probably recover OK.

Bricked G2X

GUYS HELP PLEASE I nullifed my device, left it on all night (unplugged) because I fell asleep. Now, I can't boot to CWM.. I've tried to install stock recovery, but once I turn it on it just stays on the plain, white LG logo. If I hold down volume down + power buttons the same thing happens. Can you guys help me please. Flash a ROM which is rooted
Sent from my LG-P999
Hey guys, I rooted my friends G2x and everything went fine until I flashed the ROM. Like an idiot, I did not make a nandroid backup...I downloaded BionixReloaded and up it on the sd card. Rebooted to recovery and went through the usual steps. I did a factory reset and formatted the system. However, when I went to flash the ROM, I got the "E: Can't open /sdcard/zROM/*name of ROM*.zip (bad). Now the phone won't reboot which I'm assuming is from formatting the system. I can still get into recovery and download mode....will this method fix the problem? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644#
Like I said, I'm not very familiar with the G2x, so any help be be appreciated!
I cannot remember for the life of me remember what that error means, but you can just re-download the rom you want and place it in the sdcard by mounting USB storage through mounts and system, and then flash.

Make sure the Rom.zip isn't named Rom.zip.zip. if so rename correctly, also can check md5 of the zip to ensure its a good download prior to flashing.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. I'm guessing it boiled down to a bad download, but for some reason I could not connect via USB from recovery on my laptop, so I brought it to my friends house and was able to get it to connect so I redownloaded the ROM along with another incase I got the same error, but it worked flawlessly. Thanks again to all that offered help instead of sending me a useless link via LMGTFY!

Last night I installed busy box for some reason and then uninstalled it.
Now my phone is boot looping.. it keeps showing that vibrating motorola logo but wont start up.. Please help !!!

Sounds like its time to fxz, unless u can get into recovery and flash a flashable busy box .... it might fix stuff for ya...

Nope this is not fixable and an FXZ is the ONLY way. Once you remove busybox, it will bootloop you, and there is no fixing it, even by trying to put it back in place from CWM, because CWM can not even mount /system after this since, mount won't work, see my comments below here:
The reason you NEVER, EVER remove busybox after installing it, is because there is a little mini version of busybox that motorola puts in our software load called motobox, and it only has a small subset of commands that are linked to it, like mount, umount, fdisk, format, etc... these are low level *nix commands, that the OS needs to work correctly. Once installed busybox will break those links to motobox, and put it's own in place and link those same commands and a ton more in /system/bin, to itself, but when it uninstalls, it does not re-link motobox to those commands, so.... you can see where this is headed.
I have also seen this do very nasty things to most other phone models as well, not ours or motorola, in general.
FXZ finally !
Thank you guys !
I fxz'ed my phone and it worked.. (though not to mention that when I uninstalled busybox, my phone only had 20% battery, and when I tried fxzing my phone through RSD lite, it kept giving error for low battery, then I finally managed to get an external charger and charged the battery..) huh.. lot of work but happy at last ! and learnt a lesson !
