[Q] Update Nexus S from 2.3 to 2.3.4 - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I just got my Nexus S from craigslist (used). I don't know how to check to see if it's I9020T or I9020A. When I go to the about phone it showed as
Model number: Nexus S
Android version: 2.3
Basband: I9020XXJK8
Kenrel: 2.6.35.7-g8d9ff17 [email protected] #1
Build number: soju-userdebug 2.3 GRH54 79130 test-keys.
I tried to check for update but it says the phone is update it and I also tried to update it using this file GRI40, KB1: Released but it said couldn't verify the signature and the update is aborted. Do I have a broken Nexus S or is there another way to update its firmware? Thanks

Check the model number under the battery. Search for the 2.3.4 GRJ22 official full rom in the Dev section if it the i9020T version and install from recovery.

Thanks for the reply. I just checked the model version. it's I9020_EUR so I guess the I9020T firmware won't work on it.

No that's the same thing, you can flash the I9020T firmware on it.

I guess you can use Clockwork recovery to flash it, cause your recovery cant verify the update. Use fastboot to load the recovery.

I got it updated now. I believe that my phone is for "engineer" testing not the user version that's why I couldn't get OTA update. Here is the steps that I did in case of someone has the same problem as mine
1. Install Driver
2. Root the device and Clockworkmod
3. Install Cyanogenmod
4. Manually install the latest Nexus S ROM from Google
I don't think know if step 3 is required but that's how I've done it.
@reddv1: once again, thanks for helping me. I really appreciated it.

you could have skiped it all except the last step. The sticky has a Full rom image, it *will* update your phone properly. No need to install Clockwork or cyanogen.

A Way to Update the i9020a to Stock 4.0.4.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but will this process work?
1.Unlock bootloader etc
2.Flash stock i9020t official release from google
3.Flash (GRJK6) UCKF1 radio or another i9020a compatible radio.
4.Flash the official update for 4.0.4 from google. --> the 18mb version.
5.Flash the UCKF1 radio again.
Will this process work?
I want to give it a shot. I really doubt google is going to release the i9020a 4.0.4 because apparently they deny that this model even exists.
Clarification: Do you need custom recovery to flash the i9020t 4.0.3 official release? And do you have to flash the radio right after or can you reboot into the rom?
EDIT: I was searching in the 4.0.4 odexed update and I found that there is no radio file. Does that mean that step 5. wouldn't be necessary?
Anyone have ANY input.. at ALL?
I went back to 2.3.6 then wiped and the 4.0.3then wiped again and itsnalled 4.0.4. While I was there, I installed superuser and ucke1 radio

So first you flashed 4.0.3 then 4.0.4 odexed update then i9020a radio? Do you need to unlock the bootloader and load custom recovery or can you do all this on stock recovery?

You seem to be over stressed over this ICS issue ,
Why don't you :
1.Trash this I9020A
or
2.Trash your network and pick I9020T
or
3.Move to another device ? Galaxy Nexus ?
???

4. Wait a few days (correct me if I'm wrong) until the I9020A 4.0.4 is rolled out..
If you use an official firmware rename the file to update.zip, copy to the root of the SD card and use recovery to install the update.

Google released the IMM76D factory images for i9020T yesterday.
http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html
Just flash those (with the exception of the baseband) and you should be good to go. They haven't denied the existence of i9020A either.
Other factory images (toro, sojua, sojuk, sojus) are currently planned
follow their respective matching OTAs.

but you need the stock 4.0.3 to flash the odexed official update. since it's only 18mb. and the i9020a never received the 4.0.3 update.
EDIT: nevermind i see that they released the official full update for the i9020t. It's ok I'll be patient and wait till they release the factory image for the i9020a.

I apologize for my lacking knowledge! By flash those do you mean just the 4.0.4 IMM76D (169.9mb) file ?
And I can do this by the update.zip, recovery method ? I'm not sure how to not flash the baseband or how to flash it
I just extract the 162mb zip from the factory image and recovery method .. does this sound right?
if I'm correct it wont effect the user data partition right?!

You first need to unlock your bootloader which can be done very easily. Search the forum for instructions if you don't already have adb and fastboot working.
I would recommend wiping all your data to prevent anything crazy from happening. If you extract the .tgz file you'll see a flash-all.sh file that you can refer to with your favorite text editor. You'll see some commands in it. What you should do is follow every command with the exception of "fastboot flash radio blah blah blah".

Not to scare you or anything.. but the official android dev in charge of the AOSP build of ics 4.0.4 stated that it is not advised to flash the i9020t update on the i9020a as if may cause many issues. (weak signal and glitches etc.) He said to wait until he releases the i9020a 4.0.4 image. It should be very soon. Then you will get the official build for your phone. I suggest waiting. But go ahead if you're really impatient. Just do so at your own risk.

Unable to apply newest cricket OTA update

I have an unlocked bootloader and them routed, although I was unable to achieve s-off following any of the guides on this forum. When I try the OTA update, I get an error in CWM saying it was unable to flash the image and it was cancelled. I have tried it with signature verification enabled and disabled, with the same results.

The update to Jelly Bean i guess?
As long as you have cwm installed you will not be able to update. The OTA update is not for flashing in recovery!
You need stock boot.img, stock recovery and stock system partition to update.
Already on jb. Update 2.04.1050.5
I assume the same rules still apply, though?

OTA installation aborted
I have bought this phone a couple of months ago and rooted it and have clockworkmod recovery 6.0.3.2 installed. The phone is running good and i have not had problems. However, I see that there is an OTA update for the version 2.04.1050.5. I tried installing the 15 mb file and it told me to restart the phone. When it does, it takes me to the clockworkmod Recovery thing and tells me the installation is aborted? What do I do? Do I really need this update or can I go without? Also, is this the update for the 4.2.2 Jelly Bean?
Any help is appreciated.

Maybe you can try my patch: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tqxfjwwja3uaqsn/install-patch.zip
It uses a libssl.so from a LG Optimus L5 II (4.1.2) and it works on my TrekStor Surftab Ventos 10.1
If your device does't boot after you've installed it:
The patch creates a backup of your libssl.so at /system/libssl.backup.so, so just replace /system/lib/libssl.so with that backup file

I'm s off, have twrp installed and on stock ROM. Would like to install this update, or get a 4.2.2 or 4.3 stable fully functional ROM. Do you think flashing stock recovery and then ota would work even if I'm s off. Should still be able to boot an ruu from fastboot even if I boot loop. Suggestions on custom roms?
Edit: Used flashalot's recovery switcher to flash stock recovery, rebooted, then flashed the ota update. After update I lost root, but still have s off.
Plan on fastboot flashing another recovery, then flashing su binary again from the new recovery.
Hope this helps.

This might help...
If you have the OTA.zip file... but custom recovery and such like TMUS application removed..
This will wipe your phone. Making a backup is not optional !!!
http://sadevil.org/blog/2012/12/23/manually-flashing-an-ota-update/
This looks somewhat straight forward.. If you want to get the OTA downloaded:
got to settings .. and manage to get the software update.. It will download eventually into your Download folder ..
Do not Apply the OTA at this point.. select install later!!!
pull the file on your PC/Mac/Linux box and modify as described in the URL above..
reboot your phone and the OTA should not bother you ... if you have pulled (like in remove) or at least renamed the OTA file..
Before you push Firmware.. and such make sure you have made a backup with CWM !!! or whatever method you are using!!!
also make sure you have your custom recovery image somewhere available and maybe a su.zip cwm file as you may loose root as well.. not sure..
If you have rooted your HTC one S your self - this should not be hard to DIY..
Currently I am at work and cannot try it out myself .. but definitly will do it once back at home later..
Godspeed to all of you brave hackers..

Updating Nexus 5

Hello,
I have a Nexus 5 with root, stock rom, Franco Kernel and the custom recovery is TWRP. I accomplished this by following a guide around this forum, I know very little about Android. The Android version i'm running is the 4.4.2 and the phone keeps asking me to update do the newer version, however, when I try to do it, it takes me to the TWRP menu, and when I try to install it there, I get this error:
"/system/bin/thermal-engine-hh" has unexpected contents
E: Error executing updater binary in zip
Error flashing zip
How can I update the phone to the newer version of android? Can anyone help me? Thanks.

First thing, turn off mobile data. Your phone may try re-download it over and over again and use up your mobile data plan.
To install the ota via the ota update on the stock rom you will need to return to stock recovery and maybe stock kernel (not sure about this one).
NOTE: Before trying the below steps as I haven't tested them myself, please backup your ROM first. Better safe than sorry.
You can try installing the OTA updates manually from TWRP. You can find the links in the post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/ref-nexus-5-stock-ota-urls-t2475327.
If you are running 4.4.2 KRT16M you will need to download three updates.
1. KTU84M from KOT49H (4.4.2 update to 4.4.3)
2.KTU84P from KTU84M (4.4.3 update to 4.4.4)
Download them together and also put on a flashable zip of TWRP in the same location as it looks like it will reinstall the stock recovery.
You can even put on one of Franco kernel just in case too.
In TWRP select install zip and install number 1 first, then install 2. and finally install TWRP again. You should be updated to 4.4.4.
You can then install Franco kernel again just in case.
I hope this makes it easier.
EDIT: follow the link in the previous post as it has different scenarios and the steps needed.
Just download the full rooted stock ROM in android development and flash it without wipe from recovery.
It's actually fewer steps anyway.
OTA = revert system changes and/or kernel, reboot into recovery, flash the OTA , boot to bootloader, connect to pc, fastboot flash recovery, reboot into recovery, flash supersu.
Rooted stock = reboot into recovery, flash the ROM.
No brainer really. Flashing an OTA if rooted is a fool's errand.

Worked fine for me. I'm using a non-rooted shield tablet.
Hmmm maybe root is causing it to fail...

Just ran it on my unrooted Lte variant with no issues.

Root, changing anything in /system, or flashing another boot.img will make the update fail.
It worked with root on 5.0. Just have to flash stock recovery. And no system modifications

What kind of system modifications? I have stock recovery and nothing else except by the SD Card fix, but it failed as well.
If you installed an app like cf lumen... That requires a driver alteration.. Which is a change to the system partition. Go back to that app and restore the old driver, reboot and try the OTA again.

Other apps that may affect the system partition like that are Lux and Twilight.
Ahhh thanks for the insight.

I had the same issue like OP. Just tried manually flash the OTA update, and I found my CWM recovery think my Tablet is still running 4.4.2, which is not correct. But my build.prop's fingerprint is filled with 5.0, not 4.4.2, so I'm really confused here.
I guess we had to modify something now.
Edit: or we can just download the latest full ota package, I've guessed the name and downloading, but unfortunately I can't share it due to "new user" limit. So good luck on finding it.
Edit2: I think I should give some hint, the latest update is using ota-29082_493.9700 as version, all the rest stuff can be found on this forum.
Anyone have a link to the stock recovery we need to flash? I used the one here but I just got an android error logo then: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55059390&postcount=9
OTA links
Here are the OTA links...

Problem is there is no factory recovery image of 2.0/lollipop5.0 or 5.0.1. So if you root/modded you have to wait for a new factory recovery image to get the stock system partition or flash stock all the way back to the KitKat update 1.2.1 and do the lollipop ota then the 5.0.1 ota.

I get the same error as the guy you quoted. I'm tryna get a stock recovery file for 5.0.0 but all the links for the file are all down for some reason. It's really troubling me.

nVidia has not officially released the full recovery image for OTA 2.0 (Android 5.0 or 5.0.1). This is what i got from them: https://twitter.com/ManuelGuzman/status/547646545831530496
The links for OTA 2 were up shortly after the first appearance, but for some reason they pulled them out.

I'm unlocked. Is there a FULL zip for 5.0.1? And if yes, did you tried it?
