[Q] install-recovery.sh - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all I just rooted with su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip and flashed CW 3.0.2.4 crespo everything went well. When I booted out of CW recovery and am looking for install-recovery.sh in etc file to rename it, it is not there !! I used this method http://jaxov.com/2011/02/how-to-root-android-2-3-3-gingerbread-on-nexus-s/
Im on GB 2.3.4 on my new NS4G Sprint
With that said I have rebooted twice since into CW and it stuck not going back to original recovery which from everything I read was supposed to happen.
Any suggestions? I am concerened if I have to go back to stock recovery that ill need that file.
When I mounted USB in CW to flash the su zip to my phone , for some odd reason my computer did not recognize the NS as an external storage so i did reboot out of CW , USB mount and placed the su file on my NS and then rebooted back into CW and flashed the su root. Everything seems to be working perfectly

Maybe the NS4G doesn't have that script. I think there is one other version, maybe i9020A, that doesn't have it either.
If you ever need to go back to stock recovery, well I guess someone will have to grab the stock recovery image and make it available!

Yes, some versions don't have that script like my i9020a so CWM is permanent. I got a stock recovery image from here. Might not work for the 4g since it was dumped from an i9020a.

[Q] Need some help!!

Im trying to flash the Clockwork Recovery mod to my sidekick but every time I boot in recovery I keep getting the stock recovery screen. First of all I rooted my phone using the latest version of SuperOneclick Root. Once the phone was rooted I installed both root explorer and rom manager.
I downloaded the modified binary recovery file and replaced it in system/bin using Root Explorer. I used Rom manager to flash the CWM and it supposedly intalled it (it says version 4.0.0.2). I tried to reboot on recovery but it doesnt boot the CWM recovery screen. I the tried donwloading the CWM and placing the update.zip file in the root of my SD card. I then rebooted into recovery and selecte reintall packages and i get the following:
E: signature verification failed.. installation aborted?
Im guessing its the binary recovery file that's causing the problem but I've tried replacing the file again and it wont work. Anyway, does anyone have any idea whats going on and how I can successfully install the clockwork recovery mod??
Yes that would say that it isn't using the correct modded recovery binary. use my modded oneclickroot script to push the correct recovery and update, and it should work.

Thank you so much it worked like a charm!! One question, every time I boot in recovery now, it boots in the stock recovery. In order to boot CWM i have to select reinstall packages every time is this normal??
Currently that's normal. I've got the same thing on mine.

Yes that CWM is a fake flash and doesn't actually replace your stock recovery so you would have to reinstall packages everytime, unless you flash bali kernel which has the red CWM that replaces the stock recovery when you boot into recovery mode
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA App
EDIT: sniped by ayoteddy.
That is normal, as that script uses the "fake flash" instead of having CWM built into the kernel.
A fake flash technique uses a modded recovery binary that doesn't check for signature verification, allowing us to boot into CWM from a stock looking recovery, even on a stock kernel.
In order to have recovery boot straight to CWM, you need to have it built into the kernel, which currently only exists on the Bali kernel (as there's no need to build it for another kernel).

[Q] Epic Touch soft bricked?

I was tryin to flash starbust but i did it wrong so when i went back to recover the rom that was previously on there i recovered back to a rom that was still on the sd card from my evo. Now i'm stuck on the "samsung galaxy s II" screen. I have access to CWM but my sd card is not visible for me to flash any other rom. What should i do?
Mount your sdcard in CWM, connect to your pc push, a new ROM to flash on there.
If thats not possible, go into download mode, open odin or heimdall, find a rom you want to flash and flash it.
Ok finally got it working. I had to put the stock kernel on it and flashed the pit as well..only thing, if I make a recovery file I can't find it in CWM. The "midnight rom" I flashed works well but there's a few fcs but that's probably just this rom.

SD partition corrupt/somthing

Device info:
Baseband Version: I9020XXKB3
HW Version: REV 11
I was happily running CM7 until I decided to switch back to the stock CM7 kernel because I was having some kind of camera issues. I went to kernel manager (teamwin) to go flash but it throw up some kind of "cannot access sd card issue" so i figured i would just go into recovery and flash the image from the kernel manager directory. I did that. I went to reboot and I got "FASTBOOT MODE- NO BOOT OR RECOVERY IMG"
Logically, I figured I would say screw it and restore a 3 day old backup in CWM. CWM would read the folders on the device but not all of the files. (kinda like a corrupted hard drive) I would adb push files to the sd card but theyd never show up. I reflashed CWM 5.0.2.0 through fastboot several times. I tried every combo of mount/unmount but the files never appeared. All I have is fastboot and CWM.
Is there anyway to get the right image for My phone so I can try stock recovery? I am out of ideas.
Thank you XDA!
UPDATE: Problem Fixed. Wipe sdcard and went back to CWM 4.0.0.2

Got myself in a mess, please help!

Hey everyone,
So, I made a mess and I have no idea how to get out of it!
I tried to update to ICS using the file found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395828
BUT I made a mistake by forgetting to rename it to update.zip (it was named Vsomethingsomethingsomething). Right now, my phone won't boot up past the startup screen (Google and the unlocked padlock). I was trying to upgrade from 2.3, had performed a factory reset before trying to update. Phone is essentially stuck on that screen. I can enter recovery by manually holding down the volume up button and power but can't move past that since I forgot to rename the Vsomethingsomething.zip file. Also, in a terrible and embarassing lapse of memory, I only backed up using TB and not CWM or ROM manager.
Can someone PLEEEEEEEAAAAASSSSEEEEE help me? You will receive my endless thanks! I'm so screwed! Help! PLease! Thanks!
You hear of ODIN? search for it, and it will save you

Maybe you could flash CWM via fastboot.
Download latest CWM image file: http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.2-crespo.img
Then, you can fully wipe your phone using CWM, and then flash the zip file.
One thing to note: the file you're talking about, that Vsomethingsomething.zip is an OTA update from 2.3.6.
If you're upgrading straightly from 2.3, go grab the full update, the file name is Zsomethingsomething.zip
Here you go: http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/google_crespo/ZD3PyN0t.zip
Download a rom that you want to flash. If you don't have a rom in mind then use CyanogenMod 9 from here: http://get.cm/get/2jI
Boot into recovery.
Mounts & storage -> Mount USB Storage
Copy the cm9 zip you downloaded onto your phone's memory.
Go back a few times
Wipe data/factory reset.
Install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card, choose the zip you downloaded.
Once it is done reboot your phone.
Note: Your phone will not have the android market on it yet. To get the android market just flash this file after you flash the cm9 zip. http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
EDIT: If you don't have CWM installed anymore you will need to install it before you flash a rom. Put your phone into the bootloader. Then do this command over fastboot: "fastboot flash recovery C:\whatever\folder\the\file\is\in\recovery.img
Here is the recovery file: http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img

Thanks so much! I can't even get into fastboot mode (plugged USB in, held down vol up+down + power), I'm still stuck on the Google & unlocked padlock screen. Suggestions?
Thanks for all the help so far. Since I'm going to be reflashing anyway, any chance I can just flash right to ICS? How do I do this? It would get rid of the step of me experimenting-then-screwing-up.
I tried what you recommended and it worked! I even managed to get up to 4.0.3 BUT now I have run into a bigger problem: no 3G reception! I have been searching online for about 4 hours now and I still can't figure out how to get a connection. I haven't managed to get CWM going and stock recovery just keeps giving me installation aborted messages. Advice? i just seem to have dug the hole deeper!
What phone do you have? The i9020A, i9020T or i9023? You'll be best knowing which phone before flashing any new radios to (most likely) fix your reception problem.
I believe KB3 for one will work regardless of (GSM) radio though. To flash radio:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
while connected via usb and in fastboot mode.
EDIT: From your other thread it looks like you have the 4G (koodo is CDMA isn't it?). You'll want an NS4G radio to flash.
So why all the hard work to flash a system img of an outdated rom? You know we are up to 4.04? And the stock odin version has the radio?

Soft Brick (hopefully) DUH DUH DUH!

I was working a phone for a friend, Rooted it with the Framaroot, gained root and shell root access, installed the modified 3e recovery, flashed the CWM version for infuse 2x, made a nandroid, rebooted into system, ran fine, downloaded ICS and Gapps for ICS, rebooted back into recovery, flashed the files, everything went through, said it was finished, no problem, right? WRONG! Rebooted system via recovery and now it will not go back into the system, wont go into recovery and will sometimes try loading a CWM background...help.
Use Odin to flash stock image and try again. When you flag cm9, don't do anything else and reboot immediately, you will get stick at the Galaxy S boot screen. Then remove the battery, boot back to CWM, flash cm9 again, only now you may flash or do anything else, but before that it's better to boot into system first.

Wow, finicky little device, isnt it, lol. Okay. I'll look up the How-to on using ODIN. This is my first Samsung phone that I have rooted, so definitely a learning process. Same thing with my HTC's, each one is different, only they are all the same, lol. THANKS!
