[Q] NS4G WiMax RSA Key Backup - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know when the Evo first came out people ended up losing their WiMax RSA Keys when flashing roms. Do we need to worry about this with the Nexus? Is their a way to back these up?

I never did have a problem with the EVO but I would be interested to know if anyone figures it out. I know that CWM for the evo would back up your keys and so did AMON but I don't think that's been inplemented for the NS4G.

IIRC, and if I'm wrong someone correct me on this, the RSA keys issue was a combination of using the one touch root method along with CWM. I did the root method listed on the EVO forum here, and never had a problem using CWM. Amon always backed up RSA keys, and I'm pretty sure that since 3.0 CWM does as well.

I never had a problem with my keys either, but I know a lot of people did. I'd just feel better knowing I had a backup.

From what is posted on the Epic board you don't have to worry about losing them with Samsung as they implement 4G differently. I've had both the Evo and the Epic and have never lost 4G after tons on flashing on both phones so I can't say I was ever worried either way.

The point where there's no way out

So I've been reading all these threads about people bricking their phone..
Im quite new at this stuff (roooting android phones, I rooted mines only about a week and a half ago)., so I havent quite got a hold of it yet...
I was wondering, whats the worst thing that can happen when rooted?
A point where theres no way to unbrick perhaps?
I was such a noob that I thought a goldcard was attached to the SDcard so I was scared to break my card or something.
Worst case scenario: You have some how messed with the system's partitions and deleted something you shouldn't have.

[Q] HTC Evo Shift - Software Upgrade

Hi all,
I'm going to be getting an HTC Evo Shift from someone, which I think has Android 2.2 Froyo on it.
The phone was reported lost and a replacement obtained, then after getting the replacement the old phone was found.... but Sprint said they had written it off, and didn't want the old one back. The ESN remains blocked on Sprint because of this, but they won't unblock it and just said they didn't want it.
Soooo, I'm going to use it as a WiFi only device... but I'd really like to get Gingerbread 2.3 onto it somehow... which I'm assuming can't be done OTA if the ESN is blocked on the Sprint network?
Also, I'm in Canada so once I get it, I won't have access to the Sprint network at all.... and I don't know if the update can be downloaded and installed manually through the computer or what. Anyone know?
I heard the Evo Shift can be rooted as well, but that sounds very complicated to me... so I'm still figuring out what my options are with regards to getting the software as updated as possible.
Any advice would be appreciated
id personally recommend reading up on how to root your fone..
and once you get that going...
you can just install a diff rom that has 2.3 on it..
=D
hey
I did a bit of reading on rooting bit it seems like its different for all devices and some are "one click" solutions while others are multi-step instructions full of unfamilliar terms and procedures which could ruin the phone. lol
I did read some instructions that pertained to the Evo Shift, but there was much involved that my brain shut off after reading the first few steps.
I was really hoping for something simple. but that might be a pipe dream, eh?

Looks like the simplest root method for the shift. I haven't tried it, but since it is on xda good chance it is well supported.

Thanks for the link.
Still sounds scary... but I'll finish reading the rest of the discussion later and see what others ultimately had to say about it.
Still open to comments from others too if anyone has any.
I dont have the phone yet, I'm just getting prepared so I can get to work updating it as soon as it arrives.
Easy and fast root method

The link that was posted would be the easiest for someone but the perm root instructions that are stickied in the development section is what I have used many times on my shift and my girls shift when I root, you can do it either from the pc or from terminal on your phone just have to make sure the commands are exact so I would say just use the pc and copy from the root instructions and paste in command prompt. There are a few gingerbread ROMS to choose from 2 are stock, one is newkidds the other is X99s ROM, then there is MikShiFted-G which is a very optimized and snappy GB, and last there is Elite v1.2 over on themikmik which is based off MikShifted-G but has carousel Rosie and 3D widgets, whatever you do don't try the ota if it goes through you will be stuck with a OS that hasn't been rooted yet

Thanks for the replies guys.
I might give it a shot when it arrives.
There is a lot more I need to look into first.
I've seen lots of people say that if a CDMA phone has a carrier blocked ESN, that you can flash another carriers ROM onto it and activate it with them. I think Cricket Wireless or Boost Mobile was mentioned, but I can't remember.
Here in Canada, Bell still runs CDMA but they will NOT allow a non-Bell CDMA phone to be connected to their network, under any circumstances. HSPA/GSM they will though.
It I could flash the ROM to a carrier other than Sprint, that might be a good idea. That way the thing can potentially have some value as a phone too, and maybe serve me as a roaming device when I travel to the US. Or, would just installing one of the third party ROM's allow it to be activated on another carrier?
I'm really not familliar with the way the US carriers operate.

[Q] Did my blunder brick my bloomin' phone?

So I rooted my Samsung Infuse and installed Clockwork recovery using the appropriate method for flashing the - v3 or ve or what it might be called - recovery. So then using Clockwork I backed up my current ROM (Stock). It acted funny later after so I decided to just go back and restore from a previous ROM. It said there were problems mounting a few things. Don't remember what those were. However, here is the real kicker; I may have used update.zip from the previous phone (Which seemed to be a T-Mobile My touch 3G with a 32A something and a 32B something else, similar to the Fender) I had since all I did was switch out the external SD cards since they were both the same size and I had all of my music on the My Touch.
So, if it did flash the Update.zip, is my phone, for the most part, completely bricked? It's symptoms include:
- Static pictures
- Will not boot into recovery
- Will display 'Samsung' but then cuts to static afterwards.
- Shows Battery meter when plugged in and my computer still recognizes and installs the device drivers.
- It will boot into Download mode. Dunno if that actually will help at this point.
If it still turns on you're golden. Just look for the ultimate unbrick thread in the development section and follow the op instructions to go back to stock. The unbrick also is pre rooted and had the right recovery installed, so you're good to flash stuff after

Cool, so somehow this fixed a phone which had a Fender radio flash. Since that's the case, what should I be worried about in the future that might permanently brick my phone?

Trashing your partitions and bootloaders. Tho I'm not an expert on Samsung devices those seem to be the main causes of true bricks.

So if I change the partitions to like an ext3 filesystem is that considered trashing it? Yes, I'm fairly new to this entire in depth Android experience. I only took the Android over the iPhone because I am experienced with Linux and only touched a MAC (Referring to the Apple Operating System and not MAC cosmetics) three times.
Well, now I can't download anything in the market due to an 'Unknown error'. I mean, I can receive emails, I think I can call and text. I just can't use my smart phone to do dumb things now. This is a very disturbing complication and I will set off to find the cure for this ailment by posting here again.

Mainly bootloaders, and ours have enough protection that it's difficult to trash them.
It's next to impossible to hardbrick our phone. Worst case you put it in a state where you need to Odin/Heimdall something to fix it.

[Q] HTC Detail = Evo Shift, Root?

I did a brief search (both on Google and XDA) and came up with very little.
For your info - The Detail is pretty much an unbranded Evo Shift, available for MNVO's... My colleague just picked up one through Credo Mobile (Sprint). The device came with Android 2.2 out of the box, so is it possible to perma-root this device?
If so, would it be possible to use EVO Shift roms on the device? I know that its impossible to answer these questions without actually having a device to test - i'm pretty much just bouncing ideas off you guys.
Any information/ideas would be helpful. Thank you in advance.
try here, it should work if I understand your questions.

Does this work?
Please let us know if this works. There is virtually no information whatsoever right now on rooting this phone. The only other thread I can find is androidpit dot com/en/android/forum/thread/437546/Rooting-the-HTC-Detail (anti-spam prevents me from posting links)
and it does not provide a conclusion.
I've been looking at this phone as well and am wondering the same thing. I don't want to get a phone that I can't root, and this is a time sensitive decision.
From everything I've read online it is just a rebranded Shift, but I can't seem to find any deep tech details on the phone to see if there are any minor differences that would prevent using Shift root method/ROMs.
I think it works
I got an HTC Detail from Credo a week ago. Am brand new to Android.
I think I just successfully rooted it, by following instructions on youTube
qbking77:
How to root and clockworkmod the HTC EVO Shift 4G on Android 2.2
(forum not allowing me to post a link since i am new and not yet to be trusted)
my phone seemed to work just like the Evo Shift in the video.
I'm running supreme sense v5 rom on my rooted htc detail from credo. It works exactly the same as the shift when it rooted it using instructions for the shift. Before i flashed ss i was using bcnice's kernel with the stock rom, which also worked fine.
The thing that i noticed that made me feel confident was that it is pg06100, exactly the same as the shift.

I have successfully rooted the Detail using clockworkrecovery and CyanogenMod 7.10, following the directions on the HTC Detail Root HowTo on the Cyanogen Wiki.
Has anyone else that has rooted this phone had any problems sending and receiving MMS or long text messages that need to be split up? Since rooting trying to send long texts says "Sending" for a long time and eventually fails. If it says sent, it usually comes back as failed shortly after. MMS usually says "Sent" but never shows up for the recipient.
Not sure if it will cure the issue. But you can try booting into Recovery. Then wipe Cache, wipe Dalvik, and reboot.
I know on some AOSP ROMS you have to go into the messaging settings and click the split at 160 thing to get the phone to send more than one message at a time, but I'm not sure about MMS, there might be a few things that need changed for you?
Shifted to the extreme, cause I rawk Supreme
I may be a bit late on catching this add, but yes. You can do a full root
Follow VICODAN's thread for most recent links:

Also if you want to do MMS, I made a how-to. It only seems to work for 2.3.4 mods however (I recommend NewSENSE)

Good luck! I am currently trying to find an image of Credo Mobile's to unroot myself. That is more trouble it seems than the Sprint's for sure.
Are you looking for the RUU ?

[Q] Nandroid Recovery Failed

Soo long story short my evo shift is in a lot more pieces than one (ie: physically destroyed), so my friend gave me his old Hero. The internet wasn't working following activation, and the Sprint tech said the phone most likely needs to be updated (hasn't been used in ~1.5 years). Can't exactly do that since my friend had CM7 installed, so I tried to boot an old image before CM7 with Nandroid and now the phone won't turn on. Basically it never booted back up when I tried to load the old image, and if I hit the power button the backlight turns on but nothing actually shows up. When plugged in, the power light at the top left also turns on.
Probably a classic story around here, but a very sad one for me (and my friend). Would've hated to have bricked his old phone, and given I have *some* root / CM experience I'm at a loss for why this would've happened. That being said I haven't used a Hero (or nandroid) in ~2 years, so I'm hoping there's something simple I'm missing...
If any one has any thoughts / advice / non-flame guidance it would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone.
Cheers,
Kyle
Did you use same original recovery to restore? A backup made with Amon_Ra can't generally be restored with clockwork etc.. Was it a Bart? What files were in the nandroid? Were they all images as .img? I have had trouble with fastbooting images back in on legacy devices. Even it could be a bootloader issue, remember the whole haykuro deathspl issue? we had to have that hard spl in order to upgrade to CM5 since it allowed enough room.
what specific build..recovery..bootloader was used with the backup and what specific build..recovery..bootloader was used with the restore?
