Hi all, checking how many tmo nexus s users are experiencing the same thing.
Manually updated from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4. Gtalk will only initiate video chat if I'm on wifi. What gives? This was supposed to work via 3g as well...

yup, asking me for wifi to use the video gtalk feature... how lame...
even the google feature video says 'over 3g' ... i think tmo nexus s users are yesterday's news, and we are being thrown to the side...

2.3.4 isn't just for the NS, its for every other phone too. they're just slow on updates
It does work well over wifi. But if I'm out using 3G, I'll never get the video call. Hopefully they'll work to get this fixed.
T-Mobile is busy saying that they are the "Fastest 4G network" but they are absolutely horrid here in Greensboro, NC after moving down here from NY.
So I have no issues being on wifi at home. (In need of wifi calling app from Tmo) We need 3G to work!

well its not false advertising, it says 'supported carriers' have it over 3g on their website. its not googles fault, its tmobile. Our only hope of cross platform, pc to phone video chat over 3g is oovoo, who announced nexus is under development to be supported soon. Which is currently what AT&T calls "4G" and its currently disabled out of the box by AT&T... on phones marketed with 4G in the name.
CNET confirmed that AT&T plans to release an OTA enabling HSUPA on the Inspire 4G and Atrix 4G sometime in April, but that's still two months after the phones launched.

AT&T currently calls HSPA+ 4G... not HSUPA. all this says is that HSUPA will be uncrippled so you'll see upload speeds similar to iphones, nexus ones, and inspires with custom roms.
Ha, no one said this was 4G other than att.
The points that its called inspire 4g... yet 3g phones on the same network have the hsupa enabled already.
Its just ass backwards on att's part.
Its missing the "+" at the moment and it shouldnt have been released with this moniker if they knew it wasnt capable.
Its all marketing, the IMT had to change their definition of 4G to accommodate att and t mobile, but because they have an "lte roadmap" they can call hspa+ 4g.
This phone will always be 3.5g, because it is not lte capable.
It just stings as a customer and employee that they crippled this device and justified it by pricing it at $99 with an upgrade. Its one of those "whats the catch?" kinda things.
The catch is you pay them the same for data as an iphone customer, yet you are not able to get the same quality from the network... on a phone thats newer and marketed as being uber fast.
I liked that corvette example...

LOL No i was joking. This is what at&t appears to be doing to us. They released 4G phones that are artificially capped by disabling HSUPA that limits upload speeds to 300kbps. at&t claims that they are "testing" this before they enable HSUPA. It will be 2 months by the time they release the software update to enable HSUPA.

Are you on a custom ROM? If so, theres no need to update. All the update does is, it enables HSUPA which allows faster upload speeds.

Yeah I went from the 1st gen iphone, 3G then to the 3GS. iOS is just that, boring. For 4 or 5 years, the iOS feel is the same. Same icons, same look up until the iphone 4.
Was gonna get the iP4 but then decided to get the Captivate and had nothing but issues with GPS. I got the Inspire and I am totally happy with it.
I am glad I made the switch to android. With an android phone and the awesome support and DEVs here at XDA, it just makes the experience a lot more enjoyable.
I don't want to pay $30/mo to use some of my 5 gigs of data on a PC. I get 'internet unavailable' when I use the built-in tethering or WiFi hotspot. I would rather not use PDANet if there is an easy way to get the built-in functionality working.

This might not happen anytime if you're on T-Mobile, though how they're going to implement this for the European models is unclear, so there's still a chance.
T-Mo will not agree to Google terms to use the Google Wallet ecosystem right now because they are developing their own payment system called "ISIS" - which is supposed to go to beta in Spring 2012 in a few places in the US.
Fingers crossed this gets worked out soon, but you didn't get any quick responses to your question because, honestly, nobody knows how this Google Wallet vs ISIS platform is going to play out.

it allows you to make calls over a wifi connection. It's only useful for people that have a bad signal. It's not free and still uses up minutes from your account and it drains the battery.
And yes you can turn it off but the only way to uninstall it is through rooting .

WiFi calling is already included in the plan. It all depends on if your phone comes with it preinstalled.
And it does use your minutes and having WiFi on does drain the battery faster than having just a mobile connection. Sheesh.

You will not be able to talk and surf over 3G or 4G LTE.
The GS5 is a Sprint Spark phone and only has one transmission path and therefore can only either connect to LTE or CDMA never both. Sorry, but it does help for battery life.

Most of us have unlimited data on sprint. Google voice integrates well with sprint. So an option would be to set up google voice, and then use a third party app such as phone for google voice. I don't have s5 yet, so can't try it. still on s3.
if anyone wants to try it, then you can report back on how well it works. I have used it overseases using a 3g connection with mixed results. Sometimes worked well, sometimes not.
