Kernel/ROM devs, get your kernels/ROMs on Kernel/ROM Manager! - myTouch 4G General

Kernel Manager is just like ROM Manager, but for kernels. I know this isn't "development" per say, but most of the devs only view the dev board. It would make life easier for us addicted flashers! What have you?

Well, there's still ROM Manager and the total lack of ROMs there!

[Q] What is purpose of Showcase AOSP, Voodoo Kernel and GAPPS?

(Disclaimer: I am new to the forum so I can't post this in the below mentioned threads because I haven't posted enough.)
Hey Ya'll I'm relatively new to the Samsung Showcase and rooted the 2.1 and installed the VOODOO for the Sound improvements! and I loved it.
Today because I can't leave well enough alone I updated to Froyo with the PnP rom.
I saw the thread '[ROM] Showcase AOSP Froyo V0.9, Voodoo AOSP kernel, and GAPPS 3/15/2011' but when I saw all the things that didn't work on it (camera, video camera, Bluetooth) I thought I'd investigate more before I did anymore!
I have a problem with doing things I don't fully understand as long as I understand the instructions.
Can some one tell me what the AOSP Froyo V0.9 Rom is (and how its better, worse different from the EB11 PnP 0.3)
About the Voodoo kernal in the above thread? and how its different than the kernal in this thread, [KERNEL] voodoo for eb11 fix release
What is the GAPPS?
I would really like the Sound improvements and I saw that its not available yet...and the lagfix isn't enough of a change for me at this time to remove the function of the camera, video camera, and bluetooth headset.
So can someone clear this up for me. I've read the entire thread of each of the above mentioned threads and they are more about bugs and for people that already know about of their function?
THanks in advance!
Justin

So AOSP stands for Android Open Source P but, any idea why some would use this instead of the Pick N Pack Rom I'm using...and if I can use the Voodoo Kernel with it or if I have to use the AOSP ROM. I guess I'm kind of looking for the features and benefits of different ROMS.
In addition I'm also using this post to get my 10 post up so I can just post this question in the Development thread.

Different ROM's have different benefits, it's all up to the user. Like I said, google it, do some research and find out for yourself what ROM's are all about. MIUI, CyanogenMod and AOSP are all different types of custom ROM's.

Thank you I will google it...more thoroughly.....I though AOSP was more of a definition than a name of the ROM.. Thanks for the input.
Anyone have any good links? (again trying to get my Post up to 10)
Why don't you just ask whatever it is you want to ask instead of wasting peoples time with posts just to up your post count? The same people that post and answer questions in the dev forum read these. No need to wait to ask until you get your posts up.

Any way I Guess I learned that the AOSP ROM is the most basic Rom. Also Found I can flash the voodoo Kernel but it only gives lag fix at this time. so I may wait to see if the sound improvement comes...thats what I enjoy the most!
So I hope others with similar questions have found this thread helpful.

[SOLVED] port ziggy kernels? [SUCESS]

i know the ziggy kernels are in the synergy rom but i wonder if there is an updated kernel we can flash on other roms? ive searched and cannot find anything since the april beta's.
i donate to the dev if he makes it so!
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/htc-thunderbolt-development/
The word is he's been cooking up a gingerbread kernel but I have no clue where to find it other that packed inside virus ROMs.
i wonder how hard it would be to extract the kernel from synergy and make it flashable on other roms? never done it and i don't want to piss the dev off. but id like to test it out on bamf.
Kernel is licensed under gnu gpl2, so you can do whatever you want to it and nobody can say otherwise, as long as you don't claim ownership and share the modifications (the beauty of open-source).
Be that as it may, unless you've done this sort of thing before (creating flashable zips, knowing whih files are part of the kernel, etc) its gonna take some research and a lot of time! Do let us know how it comes out!

Bamf rc5 pre had the ziggy kernal in it... Didnt care for it myself, battery was horrible, went back to dream kernal
TB, Sense 3.0, GB
i have successfully extracted the kernel with the andoid kitchen and repacked it into the thunderbolt anykernel flashable zip. i just made it up, flashed it to my phone and ill report back.
EDIT: phone booted and it seems to be running fine!
wifi & 4g are working and the phone is speedy as hell. ill test battery life tonight.

Working great on mine!

I think it would be best if you plan on reposting the kernal to ask permission from the author first regardless of it being gpl2. Also giving proper credit in the post would be a good idea. Just kind of common courtesy.

Youngs kernels thread Compilation

Hi guys so this will be basically be just the same as my guide on the general section...
Only this time it will be specific to Kernels
As of the moment we have 2 Kernels the are being worked upon
V's(viveks kernels) and M's Kernel(merruks) both are still works in progress so please bear with me on this but once they are both done of course change logs etc will be posted here for easier reference as well...
If more kernels will be developed then everything will be compiled here as well..
so for the moment..
let this be my opening staments
What Is A Kernel really?
Corn kernels are used as pelletized fuel for pellet stoves and furnaces. Corn kernels are a natural pellet, which gives them a huge economic advantage over other man-made biomass pellets and wood pellets.
well not that kernel...
Kernel
The central or core software component of most operating systems. Its responsibilities include managing the system's resources (the communication between hardware and software components) and can provide the lowest-level abstraction layer for resources (especially memory, processors, and I/O devices). (from xda wiki)
What is a Custom Kernel
Well is basically allows you to do a lot of things like underclocking overclocking, initd scripts support for performance tweaks...
make your phone dance and drink beer,,,that sorta stuff..hope you get my point...custom kernels allow you to do taht stock kernels wont...
Right now
We basically have 4 Kernels
they would be
Stock kernel
Terma's Kernel
Viveks Kernel
Merruks kernel
among these 4 only 2 are at this point suitable for daily use(well we could do 3 but there has been reports of not booting up)
one would be the stock kernel next be Terma's kernel which supports a2sd (not sure if init.d is supported can anyone aside from me confirm this)
merruks kernel would be the tentative third since alpha7.50rc20 boot on some and boots not on some...
as for the mean time 80 percent of the kernels are work in progress...
hands down to the devs that are creating them please let us continue to show supprt for the betterment of our devices
and world peace(with matching miss universe hand wave)
Merruk kernel Update 03.25.2012

Kernels
nicely put.
as you probably already knew, kernels are the core of an operating system.
like the engine of a car or whatever
The part of an OS that directly communicates with the hardware.

m0narx - duh he is tweaks legend!!
j4n87 - another tweaker who started the leedroid tweaks thing
baadnewz - has done a collection of mods over the years, most famous is probably the camera mod for GB
memnoc - ported CDT Tools to sensation for his sense 4 roms
Vorbeth - got CM9 working device tree
Showp and faux - kernel developers
SebastianFM - kernel dev and got USB Host working
Frankly the list goes on but they all share one thing in common, they work with code and actually develop stuff rather than just push out kitchen made ROMs

i thought being a dev meant building from source
as far as i know, HTC doesnt release source code, and some of those people you listed are sense-chefs. is it easier to port or to tweak?
do you think its easier to open a rom and tweak certain files than it is to simply compile from source and do nothing else?
if you open a zip, tweak certain files, then repackage the zip.. youre a chef?
but if you release your tweak as a separate tweak/mod youre a dev?
help me differentiate more, please. do you build your own roms from source and use your own tweaks/mods?

Building and editing source code is developer work so a lot of the true developers work on AOSP based stuff - like vorbeth, cyanogen + the rest of CM team and tripnraver for examples
Because of the very nature of kernel development the people who hack/edit kernels are pretty much all developers.
However with sense roms we can decompile the apks into either smali or pure java spource using apktool and virtuous ten studio. This means we can edit the htc code and create new stuff like the venom tweaks, cdt tools and leedroid tweaks which add more functionality into roms like apm and eqs. Those things require knowledge of developing or,'hacking' and thus make those responsible for creating those additional features developers.
Its definatly easier to port stuff than create the original version of tweaks - I know because im leading the project of porting the leedroid tweaks to the 3.33 base and its hard because much more code has been changed for this base than in previous ones but nowhere near as hard as creating the original code for the tweaks.
Some devs have their own rom like venom team but they are still devs because they are creating new features for that specific rom.
Chefs are people who cook roms without actually modifying the look or underlying code of the rom. Though of course if the rom is a port then said rom maker would probably be called a dev because it takes a lot of changing of files and using logcat to get a port running at stable functionality.
It requires more knowledge and is harder to download and compile source code than open up a rom or ruu, change a few things then reupload as a new rom.
I dont build roms from source (yet) mainly because im still reading and learning about it though fortunatly it is a lot easier for me to learn than most other people because I am a flash developer who developed code intensive flash actionscript themes for my old phone - samsung tocco lite and actionscript and java are both object orientated so I understand a fair bit of code - (also I like the Sense UI more than AOSP) but I have done a fair amount of apk smali hacks and ports.
I use a lot of my own work in my sense roms but then I also use others work like leedroid tweaks in my roms as well (with credits given ofcourse)

[Guide][FAQ][UPDATED] Don't know about something? check this out first

To make Pico general section free of multiple reptitive questions i decided to make a FAQ thread
1). Can i root my phone?
Yes you can if you unlocked your bootloader
refer to this tutorial for reference
2a). What can i benefit from rooting my device?
For basic users, Root gives us a privilege to use apps that require root like titanium backup, rootexplorer and the likes. Root can also give you the ability to use CWM recovery and install custom roms
2b). Is there a downside to rooting?
yes, for one you may loose your warranty for unlocking your bootloader. you may also have a very slim chance (like 1%) in bricking your phone if you dont know what you are doing
3). What is ROM?
It's like Windows in android.without a rom your phone is good as brick.
4.). What is CWM and Custom ROM?
A custom rom is a modified form of the rom that was given to us by htc. a few examples of this are CM roms, AOKP roms,PA roms,PAC-roms, Sense-Based CWM is short for clockworkmod recovery it's a tool use to install custom roms, patches.
5). What is this CM/AOKP/PA/PAC/SENSE your talking about?
CM is short for CyanogenMod, CM gives its user vanilla android experience (which is only present in nexus devices) at the same time more options and customization available there are 4 versions so far CM6(not available for explorer)(froyo 2.2.x),CM7(Gingerbread 2.3.x),CM9(Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.x)and CM10(Jellybean 4.1- 4.2)
AOKP is short for Android Open Kang Project, AOKP brings user MORE goodies than CM gives and it also gives the user Vanilla android experience.
PA is Short for Paranoid Android, Also like CM but it gives you unique Tablet UI (phone will look like a tablet) for your device even though it's just a phone.
PAC is combined PA, AOKP, CM. It gives the combined features of the 3
Lastly, Sense based rom are roms that are based from stock rom (with htc ui) or some are ported from other device
6). How to install one of this rom
Look for the rom that you think you like in android development section and follow the instruction given by the developer
7). So which of them is the best?
Try them all and don't compare roms people have their own preferences. when you compare roms some devs may feel bad and leave this device for good.
part 2:
1). My Device has very little amount of memory space available, how to increase memory?
there are various scripts in the forum to increase internal memory i'll give you some
this one or this one
2). Is overclocking the device possible?
for CM7/9 there is a kernel that support overclocking but i dont think its possible yet for CM10
3). Is Offline Charging for custom roms possible? (charging on plug while phone is off)
for now i haven't seen a rom or kernel that supports it (not sure about stock rom)
4). What is S-off
S-OFF means that the NAND portion of the device is unlocked and can be written to. In other words more options will be available once s-off is attained
5). So is S-Off Possible for HTC explorer?
As of now not yet but some people are trying to work on it
6). so what is a kernel anyway?
it's the medium through which the hardware part of the phone "talks" to the software side of the phone basically, like a translator of some sort. without the kernel a rom would never run
7). where can i get those kernels?
it's built in inside the rom you downloaded but you can try other kernels which other devs made by flashing them through the recovery
8). are all kernels compatible to my rom??
the answer is no, because some kernel were made for ics and not for gb, same goes for Jb kernel to Gb or Jb kernel to ICS so basically they are not interchangeable but there maybe kernels that can be compatible to both ICS/Jb because both versions were a little similar
9). so what's the best kernel??
again, the answer is dont compare them, but it's better not to touch the kernel because the developer of the rom has made the kernel in harmony with the rom. changing kernel may cause the rom to give unusual errors or problems
