So I just tried to flash an Omnia 7 ROM on my already bricked Samsung Focus (I heard some people had got it in a working state by doing that).
Unfortunately, the Flash Tool was unable to write the new OSBL (I'm guessing OS Bootloader) and failed after erasing the original OSBL.
Now the device is probably without a bootloader. Pressing the power button doesn't do anything now. Previously, it used to get me to the Samsung logo at least or I could get into the Format mode, Download mode or Connect to Zune mode. Now it does absolutely nothing. There is no vibration, no single sign of life.
I'm about to through this thing into the trash now but I thought I should at least ask around before I do that.
Is there still any way to force into the Download Mode again even though there is no bootloader on the device?

If you truly get to the point of throwing it away, you might consider posting it for sale or free on this site. I'm sure many people would like to have it as a parts phone.
Just a thought, as I hate to see good hardware being thrown away.
Can you not just send it back and act dumb?
You could probably flash it with JTAG. Would take a good bit of knowledge/work though.

That type of bull#hit is why the cell carriers are cracking down on rooting and custom roms. If you take the risk and f your phone up, that's completely wrong to send it in under warranty.

It was already bricked and stuck in an endless boot loop. So I thought about flashing it with an Omnia 7 ROM because the only other option was the Focus demo ROM floating around.

I'm not in the US and it was bought for with full $400 off contract price. So wouldn't get any warranty anyways.

Ouch! I guess there's no way to recover that amount of cost, but you might try selling it on eBay and see what you can get. It should be worth AT LEAST $50 to someone. Who knows, I've seen eBay do strange things and maybe you'd get more.
Just be sure to put all this info into the listing. I've found that the more honest I am on eBay, the more money I make, even if I'm telling prospective buyers things they'd rather not hear. If you tell them everything, they will believe you more about the condition, etc. Just a thought...
seeing that the phones are built for about an 8th of the price if not more ($400) bucks is quite a big mark up , Im sure they arent losing any money this way , why not sell the phones for the actual worth , you might fins people are more honest about what they did in the first place , $400 bucks for this phone , another $400 for the ****ty service of the contract and the carrier wont even unlock the phone ,even after you have squarely paid off the contract , **** them , cheat em anyway you can , they are doing it to you!

Amen, and to everyone defending the corporations... please re-evaluate who you are fighting for... because they do not care about you, not one bit.
While it is true that Big Business is in it for the bottom line, (Money), that is also the same reasoning that they would be wanting to make their customers happy. Without happy customers, there would be no-one to make them their bottom line (Money). I'm not all for the big companies, but without them, there would be no Samsung Focus, or Apple iPhone, or HTC HD2, etc... Again, I'm not a huge fan of any of those companies, but I am a HUGE fan of consumer electronics! If they don't profit, I don't get a cool new phone every 18 months.
Just my two cents of playing devil's advocate.

I was running cm7 on my phone, and was throwing on the audio fix to get better speaker volume, which sent the phone into a boot loop. I tried to put my phone into hboot (power+volume-) which it does not. It tries to boot every time. I've tried probably 50+ times and same result. I'm guessing it has to deal with the poor built buttons on this phone and the volume down just does not work. My question is despite the fact I'm rooted and running cm7, am I safe to say this is a hardware issue? I just don't want to send in my phone to Verizon and get billed for the fact the phones "tampered" with.
Should verizon replace your phone after you borked it? I think you already know the answer

long of it, no they shouldn't. will they? who knows, depends on if you tell them the truth or not.
Should they? Technically no. Will they? Sure. They would be happy to.
but he didnt break it if the loop comes from a hardware defect, all he did was get it to fail sooner than later basically what happened to others,so technically yes they should,or can anyone prove the software killed the hardware.

Honestly, it doesn't matter if anyone can prove the software did it or not. He voided his warranty by rooting. But they likely will replace his phone, driving up the costs for future phones.
You rooted your phone. Take it for what it is...a non-warrantied phone.
Touchy
I will start off by saying I don't have a solid answer but being as it is a hardware problem they "should" fix it. Will they? Probably not. They'll take one look, see it's rooted, and tell you that you broke it by tampering with it. All bets are off as soon as the phone is rooted...unless you can unroot and take it in I think you're in trouble but since the button is broken you can't do anything with it. Good luck and let us know what you were able to get done.
I see what you guys are saying from a moral standpoint. I'm just angry cause I know for a fact my buttons are not up to par to what they're supposed to be. I don't want to fraud the companies over something that is my fault, but in this case I'm almost positive it's related to the fact this phone was not built too well. I dunno, do "authorized retailers" handle claims with faulty hardware or just official Verizon wireless stores?
This is why you should have ADB installed and working on your computer. Hook up the phone via USB, get into ADB and reboot into recovery. There are a few threads out there for ADB you should be able to find them using Google, hopefully that will be able to help you.
If you can get into the boot loader with and then you might be able to save your phone.. Maybe, not clear take your as card out and import the rhi, they might work...

if you can prove that the failure was not caused by rooting, then they should fix it for you under warranty. but that is hard to prove.

Caused by rooting or not, there is NO warranty once a phone is rooted. Has nothing to do with what caused the malfunction.
ADB reboot bootloader or recovery should work though, as long as he catches it with the right timing during the loop.

Well update on the situation. I called Verizon telling them I can't turn on my because it "freezes" when it tries to boot up every time. He told me to try a hard reset (try to go into hboot) and I told him I tried that at least 30 times and it won't. I said I think there's something wrong with my buttons because they're not very responsive and stick really easily (which they do) and he said they're overnighting a phone to me. That was yesterday, its waiting for me at home. I'm gonna send my old phone back asap.
I'm wondering, if they have a way to find out I'm rooted, will they charge me for the phone? I don't think they'll be able to though because if I can't get into hboot, how will they? I tried adb into bootloader, but as many times as I tried, no devices were found.
you're probably aright since they might just get it and toss it in the "to be refurbed" bin. It costs a lot of money to test every return. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Congrats on getting a new phone I guess.
I have noticed Verizon has been VERY accomodating with these phones. One call is all that's needed to get a new phone. Im guess they're so generous because they devices have been so finnicky so far and they just want to keep people pleased for now.
I envision them cracking down hard sooner or later though. They're not stupid. They've already come down on tethering and such, so it probably wont be long until they get hardcore on replacements.
My son works for VZ...
and he takes your calls... and this is what he told me. Anything covered under insurance (Asurion), they really don't check/don't care about rooting. VZ, on the other hand, will look pretty extensively if it's covered under the warranty. They will look for rooting or anything else that would break warranty coverage.
I think i just bricked my phone. I am trying to return to S-on and after following all the instructions in the main sticky, i wrote the SUPERCID back to tmobile, and put in the writesecuflag 3 command, and rebooted the bootloader. Now the phone will not turn on at all. Won't power on regular and cannot turn it on into the bootloader. When i plug the phone into the computer QHUSB-DLOAD comes up in the device manager as to what it is saying it is attatched as. Adb shows no devices and RUU's cannot find the device. Just got off the phone with HTC. It is still covered under their warranty. Hopefully since all my void stickers in good standing, I have no physical damage, was able to get the CID back to Tmous and the write secureflag3 went through, there will be no reason to deny it. Here is hoping! I think EXT4 recovery is still on there though. Hopefully it will be so bricked that they will have to reset it and reload the software to be able to do anything with it
Hope you manage to get it fixed!
A question, I have yet to root my XE, but is SUPERCID a must on a sim free phone if you want to flash roms?
the fact is that if it is so bricked that it won't turn on at all they won't check it further. many members achieved to get a new phone as replacement
Just make sure you tell HTC you are the original owner and didnt get it from craigslist. Also DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES Mention any hacking forums like XDA,or ROOT, Just claim that it said "an update was available" so you chose to update and the battery died.I've had free repairs under warranty by using that same advice, A friend of mine mentioned root on his nexus one and they charged him for repair even though it was a month old as he voided the warranty

From everything i read online it really seems hit or miss depending on the technician you get. More often than not they seem to let things slide even if it seems obvious that they should have been able to see it was rooted etc. Here is hoping . I'm gonna send it out tomorrow and will keep this thread updated with developments if anyone is interested in how it went. I have read some HORROR stories about people sending there phone to HTC and it become missing in action for MONTHS. I really pray to christ that does not happen to me.
O/T a little bit, but how come with just about any other "thing" in life a warranty is good and is tied to the object and not to the person. Even though i got this phone off of craigslist, why should that have ANYTHING to do with it. The phone is the phone and the warranty is the warranty regardless of whose possession it is in. I just don't think tmobile should be able to do that. Also i think it's BS that if you buy a brand new phone and it breaks 2 days later, they give you a refurb and not a new one. How do they get away with this ****!
i think im gonna take my chances as well...the person i talked to at htc did say that if the damages were caused by me then i would have a choice to pay them to fix if not i would have to pay $35 to get the phone back...so this could end up costing the shipping to send phone and the $35 to get the phone back.

Just wondering how this has progressed. Did you send your phone to HTC? Did they say what the potential repair costs could be?
Well i sent it out on 12/21 and they received it on 12/28. On the tracking website, it says "In repair". From experience, if it is going to have any issues or gonna charge you any money, it says under review until you have spoke to them and made arrangements or paid them. One thing that is pissing me off good is that every day, the day it says it was received is changed. So everyday i have checked, it went from saying received on 12/28, to 12/29, to 12/30, and now 1/1. So i dont know if that is just the way the system works, or if they are trying to sheist me and take forever and a day like some of the horror stories i have read. Not really sure what their is to do but send a replacement since it is hard bricked and cannot be resuscitated even with professional tools from all the research i have done online. In the meantime, i bought a galaxy s 2 and am LOVING it, except for the lack of development in comparison to here in sensation land!

If you have insurance, just tell them you lost it and they'll send you a new one. My friend already did it once, even though he didn't lose his phone. At least your story is legit. Or so you may lead us to believe...

Do I just call T-Mobile? I've gotten two replacement devices. But never a lost one before. What should I say? I called my local T-Mobile and the guy wasn't much help. Just blew of my answer, told me to call asurion.
I would call T-mobile and tell them what happened. You will have to pay your deductible, but I'm almost 100% positive insurance covers against loss, theft, or damage. The deductible for loss and theft are more than damaged because they have to send you a new phone all together. At least in damage they get something back.
Keep it simple and call asureon and tell them your phone is stolen ether way you will end up calling them and you will pay the deductible maybe somewhere along the lines of $130.00 or so and they will send you another phone this is what I did when I lost mine at this point tmo will direct you to asureon anyway

I know Xo My Father has the highest credit possible. So T-Mobile gives him the max number of lines he can get (14 I think). Everybody uses him to get cheap service, and cheap phones. Since he has a bill with 14 lines, he gets a lot of perks. Like free GSII, or a $50 GSIII. So my brother gets the phone purely on the grounds that he needs a phone with his service Xo That's why I'm considering buying it off them, and giving him the Radar I just got.
Be nice if you could, would love to see you around here cooking up cool dev projects as you go exploring what you can do with the device.

Get me a gsiii for $150!!!

I had CM9 On my rooted Samsung Galaxy S3, and my phone would crash randomly in the middle of changing songs on playerpro or in the middle of phone calls, so I tried to download SiyahKernel hoping it would add some stability to my ROM. Well I had 2 different versions of the kernel somehow. One was SiyahKernel 3.something, and the other was 2.5. I assumed the 3.something would be for the S3 and the 2 something was a false download that I got on accident and was made for the S2 or something, but when I tried to flash the 3.something it didn't work, versus when I tried flashing the 2.5 it installed perfectly fine. So, here's the fun part...when I went to reboot my phone it died COMPLETELY. I can't start the phone in download mode to odin it, can't get into recovery to flash an old nandroid. Phone won't turn on, won't charge, will do absolutely nothing, and I know for sure the battery was charged to 90% when it crapped out. I've done battery pulls, I actually did a 3 hour battery pull at one point...I don't have insurance, and I don't have the $$$ to go buy another phone, so if anyone has some ideas on how I could either get my phone back operational, or a cheaper solution (like a jigg) it would be MUCH appreciated. I wasn't just a noob jumping into it on my S3, I've been rooting, romming, and flashing **** since 2009, and it's my 10th smartphone, but my first brick ever. Please help!
search jtag.
If you can't get into odin mode or recovery then your phone is deffo hard bricked n will be costly to repair mate. Be careful flashing kernels n use odin to do it not recovery mode

I had the gs2 and I was trying to unroot it and I couldn't even get Odin to work because it didn't recognize the phone. So I called samsung and told them that got an update, but after it finish updating it cut off and never came on, and the battery was fully charged. So, if I was you I'll go that route. And good luck

Could I do the JTAG process MYSELF, or is paying them 60 dollars the only way to solve my problem?
That seems like the only way to fix this, because as of right now I seem pretty much screwed.

I think you need equipment to do it.

Note for the future: always a good idea to carry the cheaper (just asurion) insurance if your gonna root and flash. It's $5.18/month. A quick "oops I drove over my phone, or its on the bottom of the Atlantic", and boom.. New phone for a C note.
Sorry for no solution, it's more for others reading post.

This post is ridiculous. Asurion blows, never have had a good experience with them over using 5 phones insured by them. Only ever had 2 crap out on me (hardware-wise. If it was ever software related I did it, and knew exactly how to handle it, but the 2 that were done were spidered screens). They gave me a broken refurbished evo back for the very first phone I ever had that I rooted, rommed, and hacked on for DAYS trying to learn the entire process...all those manhours and they send me a refurbished phone with nothing on it, and a screwed up LCD digitzer...do NOT recommend asurion whatsoever, and will never use them again no matter what carrier I go with.

Why would you use odin to flash a kernel? I use cwm all the time for roms and kernels alike. Odin for radios or to return to stock. Cwm does everything else I need it to do. Same mistake could have been made on a computer guy downloaded two kernels and flashed the wrong one.
OP I am sorry for your loss.

imo insurance fraud is not the right answer. the right thing to do is research then flash, dont flash then research. ofcourse its now standard in america to be bailed out for every mistake we make, so perhaps your right.... I have yet to cave in and accept this kind of mentality.
The profit margins these companies make is ridiculous to begin with. It's not fraud, the only thing that may be considered even close to it is claiming that the phone is missing or damaged beyond repair due to something that was out of your control. Non the less your insurance covers all these avenues twice a year.
In reality, a bricked phone should be covered under insurance, and I'm sure if you have the proper legal knowledge you could argue that further and make them cover it without having to tell a white lie. Insurance is simple, covering a loss. And a loss is technically a brick (that's not open for debate either, that's correct), but there is a loophole they use where they can refuse to honor a claim if they feel to do so (hence modifications).
F that. I pay for insurance, I do my part. Not to mention when I actually signed up for the insurance, I asked the vzw rep if a rooted phone is covered, and his response was exactly this: don't take a chance, smash it up and send it back, or disappear the device.
I do not abuse or condone anything of what I said, I have yet to make a claim, but be assured, if I brick my device after 5 years of carrying ins. I am getting my money's worth out of it.

Hey Guys I have a question, Last night my One X suddenly powered off while browsing the internet now it won't turn on and no led lights come on when it's on the charger computer won't recognize it, It's just dead in the water left it on the charger overnight and still nothing. So my question is has anyone had any experience with HTC and their warranty with the one x? I can't go through at&t because not even 5 days ago I switched to straight talk after buying out of my contract with them so I don't have Their insurance anymore and I was in the middle of looking for insurance online through a 3rd party so I didn't have that either. I know HTC is "supposed" to have a 1 year warranty on the product but most people I see here get it replaced through at&t.
Have you held power button down for at least 10 seconds since talking off charger this morning by chance?

You can call HTC and they will have you mail it away (to Texas I think if you are in the US). If they determine it is their fault, they will fix the phone. If they determine it is not their fault, you have to pay them like $50 for them to mail the phone back.

I would assume that HTC would replace your phone no problem, they may make you do some troubleshooting steps but it's worth it for a new phone.

Yeah, I can already tell this is gonna be a Pain in the ass HTC keeps telling me to contact at&t since it's a branded phone from them. At&t says since I bought out of my contract it's Htc I need to talk to. Round and round we go.
Make sure you have a back up phone. HTC service is very slow moving. Their phones are repaired by a third party and they have very little access to progress information. You're looking at 3 weeks minimum.
I went through hell with them when my one x gsm broke.
Don't let them tell you they don't have anything to do with the att one Xl...they sent me the one I have now after waiting for 2 months for them to repair my one x gsm

I'd be happy for them just to take the phone at this point. There telling me pretty much its at&t's problem and at&t is telling me it's HTC's problem. It has started to try install new devices when plugged into my computer now though. It's trying to install qhsub_dload mode driver and usb_input. So I dunno whats going on. I didn't flash anything and it was running perfect then just bam so Guess I'll just keep working on HTC.
qhsub_dload is called download mode, and its a real bad sign. It means everything is gone, including hboot. Its not easily recoverable, and you probably wouldn't be able to do so. And it might be a straight out hardware failure, anyway. If its not bootloader unlocked or anything, its not worth you messing around with anyway, since you can just get a repair or replacement by warranty.

It is bootloader unlocked but if they can't even boot it up I doubt they would be able to tell? Just weird that it happened like I said I didn't flash anything it just shut down in the middle of internet browsing. So I don't know how everything got erased.

True, they can't tell on the phone that its BL unlocked, if it can't be powered on at all (even hboot). But unless you used the IMEI spoof BL unlock method, you had to submit your IMEI to HTC to get the unlock token. Now whether they actually keep a record of that, and will hold it against you, is another question.
From your description, it doesn't sound like anything you did. My gut feeling its a straight out hardware failure.
