Hi guys
I'm currently a Nexus One user, considering to get a Nexus S in near future.
I've couple of questions to ask about Nexus S.
1. What's the capacity of internal storage on Nexus S (for applications and their data)? On Nexus One I use DT app2sd and have 200+ softwares installed.
2. What's the capacity of fat32 partition (on the virtual SD card)?
3. How is its battery life compare to Nexus One?
Thanks for your help

The battery life is definitely better than the N1 thanks to its 1500 mah battery, it's super amoled display and maybe because the hummingbird processor consumes less power. The internal storage is 16gb of memory, but you'll only be able to access about 13-14gb.
The only issue I have with the NS is scrolling on flash sites. The phone is very laggy on flash sites. Its a known software issue so hopefully there will be a fix soon.

I am also a Nexus One user who bought a Nexus S not long ago.
I have to say that it's a worthwhile upgrade. It's so much faster/smoother even though both are using 1GHz processor. Hummingbird FTW!
The flash sites problem didn't occur for me. Maybe because i'm using Opera for my browser instead of the stock browser.
But overall, you will not regret your decision
Nexus S is a good upgrade. I sold my N1 after having the NS for about a week. I only need one daily driver and one sentimental android phone at a time, and the latter will remain the ADP1 for now. I do love the N1 though, but it didn't make sense to have that much invested by keeping the N1 when I wouldn't ever really use it. No way in hell I'm selling my ADP1 for $80.
You won't be disappointed with the upgrade to the NS, but at this point you might want to wait and pick up the G2X, HTC Pyramid or SGS2, or wait until the next Nexus Phone towards the end of the year, possibly a different industrial design with the internals of any of the above phones. If Google follows the same approach as last year with the NS, releasing a modified version of the Galaxy S towards the end of the year after the Summer release of the SGS then the next Nexus may be a SGS2 variant with the Exynos processor.
I got a NS after I lost my N1 (sad), but it's a very solid upgrade. The main thing I really miss is the trackball with the multi-color notifications. I thought I wouldn't like the plastic case versus the metal case of the N1, but I haven't minded that actually. FFC is pretty cool too.

search the forum, there are so many other threads about this.
you're on the Nexus S forum, so the biased majority is going to say "yes" and the trolls who come to the NS forums to flame are going to attempt to bash it.
In the end, it's really your decision.
nexus s is a nice device. i personally do not like samsung phones and prefer htc but the nexus s is a nice device with many features. id like to try it for a month to see how that curved glass is.
many variables to weigh, cost, carrier, plans, etc. the nexus s will put you with at&t or t-mo. have you considered the samsung galaxy s 4G with t-mo?
good luck!

Galaxy S 4G is a nono. It's pretty much a Vibrant + FFC (Mod can apply FFC to Vibrant) + 4G
Like I've said in all the other "Nexus S vs <X>" threads. If having the latest versions of Android is something you want, a Nexus device will fit you perfectly. Kernels etc will be open sourced asap.

I think it does, it's just revamped and I honestly don't think it's worth $199.99 because of the phones that are going to be coming out this year.
I personally just wouldn't get it because its a 2.0 of a same phone with added some basic features.
4G? Naaw.. I'm not downloading from my phone so I can care less about these speeds. And they're all theoretical.
FFC? Honestly.. I don't ever even use FFC. I have my NS and haven't used it once except day one when i was checking it out within Camera.
Also it is a punch in the face to owners of a Vibrant. Just imagine a week from now Google released 'Nexus S2'.. same phone but added 720p camera and a SD card slot with 4G.
TBH.. The only reason why I prefer Nexus S is because its maintained by Google without relying on manufacturers and carriers adding bloatware onto the phone. It allows the best possible Android experience.
Other phone in mind? T-Mobile G2X (Optimus 2X) -- but its not Stock Experience.
I prefer nexus s coming from a g2 iPhone 4 and "vibrant 4g" I love the way the sns looks its to sexy just my opinion

Well I got a Nexus S and my wife has a myTouch 4G so I can give you an honest answer here.
My wife is using the base stock SENSE rom and she is constantly restarting her phone after heavy usage. (if you flash to like CM7 or one of the mt4g ROMs this probably won't be an issue) We web browser is so much nicer on her's because of the hardware acceleration with flash, I just put flash to load on demand on my web browser and everything is quick. As far as the processor they are pretty much a match yet I have overclocked my Nexus S and it makes her mt4G look slow.
As far as weight the Nexus S is noticeably lighter. The battery life is about the same to be honest, they both have similar battery ratings and I am getting more now since SetCPU tweaks and downclocking profiles when not in use.
Now here in Atlanta, or the area that I live just south of Atlanta, my 3G service keeps up with her in all the 4G areas, are speed tests are about equal. T-Mo just hasn't really got the speeds up down here, but to be honest 4G is really not going to make a huge difference on your phone, maybe if your going to tether in areas with proper HSDA+.
I bought my phone because I wanted to pure android and quicker updates and a device that is more exclusive in my area (my best buy told me that they only sold 15 since they came out). But again if you are going to root and do custom ROMs then you won't have to worry about waiting for updates and such.
They are both great phones, and the Nexus S is going to have its bugs since you get to test the newest releases of android before it really gets mainstream use on other devices.
I had the MT4G for a couple weeks before the Nexus S was released. I have a rooted, overclocked, Nexus S; my wife has a completely stock Nexus S; and my daughter has a MT4G. Both of them count on me to pretty much do all updates, install apps, etc on their phones so I use all 3 a lot.
My phone is the best of all 3. My wife's is the next best. The MT4G has much more lag than the Nexus S due to Sense even though it has more RAM it still isn't enough. The only advantage the MT4G has is during tethering the 4G data speeds are nice, but I rarely tether so it doesn't make that much of a difference.
Here are my opinions on which phone is better in different areas:
1. Hardware quality: Nexus S
2. Speed/lag: Nexus S
3. Data speed: MT4G, but only cell data and not by much
4. Call quality: equal
5. Battery: equal
6. Look and feel of OS: Nexus S
7. WiFi calling: right now only on MT4G
8. Camera: equal
Other features a plus for Nexus: Google updates, no HTC screwing things up. No Sense slowing the phone down. Better screen.
MT4G advantages: Hard buttons vs capacitive (personal preference). LED notification light. 4G.
I am in a similar situation as well, GF has the mytouch4g and I have the SNS. Like brokenwall said, the MT4G gets real slow under heavy use. Battery for me is significantly longer although i dont have setcpu installed, the phone itself has nice power management. Weight of phone is really a personal decison, coming from a HD2, I prefer metal battery covers and the slightly heavier weight of the MT4G but thats just me. One of the big ups about the nexus is it coming already unlocked, of course you can always unlock the MT4G but the SNS has a higher resell value if you ever change your mind
Overall i would recommend the SNS but both phone are nice.
can you guys stop calling the Nexus S a SNS.. it is NS
Nexus One wasnt called GN1/GNO or HN1/HNO.. it was called N1
Nexus s great phone.
Mt4g if you root. And put cm7 or iced glaciar its insane.

hi guy i own a samsung galaxy s i9000m from bell in canada and wanting to move to SNS mobilicity anyone have any advice? should i? any problems with the phone like SD card failiure and such? any hardware problems? any ad updates from samsung that renders the device useless?
updates are from Google directly, not Samsung.
Samsung provides the hardware, nothing more.

the SNS is safe, unlike the I9000M
no internal SD issue
it works great in either Wind or MobilityCity
no external SD, is very hard to go a day without it
it can get buggy with 2.3 is not that smooth, there are many apps that are not 2.3 ready, and FCs
updates are OTA direct from google
in SNS you will lose all the cool multimedia features from SGS
no MKV, no DivX, no AVI, no etc....

They're two different sceens. The Nexus S has 2 variants. None of them use "AMOLED"
I9020 Nexus S: Super AMOLED
I9023 Nexus S: Super LCD
And in my opinion, I9020 > I9023. Pretty sure the large % of the crowd would agree.
And yes, rooting is SO SIMPLE on the Nexus S. All you do is fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and flash a su.zip and you're rooted. The hardest part is installing the drivers and 2.3.X SDK etc etc.
And yeah you can get CM7.

Though there are users who will swear by SLCD instead.
A simple way to differentiate the screen.
SAMOLED : More vibrant colours and deeper blacks.
SLCD : Sharper and more clarity
Both screens are awesome though. You won't go wrong with either one
But if you're buying it in Singapore, it's going to be i9023 version, which is SLCD.
thanks.. Sooner i will get one...
Hi, I'm looking to buy a phone pretty much for Android development. I'd be looking to experiment and play initially, not for commercial use yet. I'd be looking to do some augmented reality apps, both position-based and location-based.
I don't really use phones for.. calls, but I would be looking to have this as a long-term investment that I'd like to last for a few years. Looking at the specs for the S on paper, it's a little disappointing in terms of power, especially when compared to the likes of the Samsung S2 or the HTC pyramid/shooter. I'm sure dual-cores will go from speed to speed before hitting quad though, but at 1Ghz, the Nexus S is essentially still like a Nexus 1, with a few more bits and pieces.
Watching a video - the story of the nexus - on youtube.com/googlenexus, one google guy implied that there's more to come from them, and I've read in a thread around here that they tend to release every 6 months. I'd be really peeved if I bought a Nexus S only for a new Nexus to come out in a few months time.
I am interested in Gingerbread, and Samsung's touchwiz looks so incredibly crap, so, long story short, for someone who doesn't want to buy phones too often, and would use it mainly for dev experimentation with the odd phone call, would the Nexus S really be worth it? I'd be prepared to wait a month or two and pay a bit extra for a dual-core.
Looking forward to hearing your opinions. Thanks
One reason why Google did not release a dual core nexus when they could have done it, is because Android OS was not optimized for dual cores yet. So even when other manufacturers starts to push dual core models. It won't really work as well as Nexus S until Google release a dual core Nexus in future.
Hummingbird is a still considered a huge upgrade over the 1st gen Snapdragon processor which the Nexus One had in terms of graphics capability. Thus making graphics intensive applications/games and UI enhancements such as live wallpapers a much smoother experience.
You can of course wait for the next Nexus to be out. But in terms of technology, you cannot finish waiting. After you get a dual core Nexus a quad core Nexus might be out in future. It depends on how you see things and whether you think the Nexus S would be worth the buy.
To me its well worth the buy.
Ahh, thanks for the reply. OK, so, I had a basic play on the Nexus S today. No internet or connectivity though, and only stock apps. The people in CPW didn't really know much about it Overall the phone feels very responsive. I previously had a Desire, which I sent back because it had a cracked case, and it felt sluggish at times. It's nice to see an Android system like its supposed to.
The Nexus S in UK is £429. The 16gb S2 is down for £530ish. It's hard to think that for a little bit more I'd be getting dual-core so that even though Android isn't yet ready for dual-cores yet, it would be in later versions. The problem is the Samsung UI though,
I don't want to buy one of the latter single-core phones only for it to vanish in the power of dual-cores. For example, experimenting with augmented reality - 3d models on screen as opposed to info boxes - I'd imagine would be pretty intensive.
The Nexus S seems to be a basic prototype of where the new phones should head.
I don't know. I'm getting itchy fingers!

i too have itchy fingers. although i feel that the nexus and evo 3d arent significant enough jumps to make me switch from my evo. i would like the speed of the evo shift's cup/gfx and/or the hummingbird but the form factors that they are available in dont really do it for me. almost 100% decided on sticking with the evo for a little while longer...a brand new one at that
Hello everyone. I'm thinking of buying a new phone. I am between Nexus S and the HTC Desire, but I don't know which to pick. ;-;
Nexus S
4" Screen
Super AMOLED
Google's own-branded device with faster updates
HTC Desire
576MB RAM. 64MB more than the Nexus S
So, opinions people? I want a good Android phone on which I can play games smoothly, because I have nightmares with my Magic.
Posting benchmarks, opinions etc will help me a lot. Thanks! ^_^
This is not a question.
HTC desire is a generation behind (it's equal is the Nexus One)
go with Nexus S and don't bother about Desire.
Actually i have both and:
- Desire is much more well made, feels better
- AMOLED screen in Desire (have Nexus S with SCLCD) looks better, but SCLCD performs better in sunlight
- Nexus S has a lot lot lot... more space for apps, system etc.
From features perspective - Nexus wins and hopefully will get more devs support soon.
Another nexus advantage - its google... gets updates asap
I also have both and both with Amoled.
As someone else posted Desire is one generation behind, we I play with it now it really feels old compared to the Nexus S. I definitely felt like getting a Nexus S was an upgrade from my Desire.
Nexus S +
Always up to date Android
Original Android experience
Bigger, brighter screen (at least amoled version)
Much faster
A lot more space for apps (Desire = 140mb only)
Nexus S -
No sdcard slot (not an issue at all for me).

this pretty much sums it up.
The Desire has some sick Devs porting everthing you want. Flashing things and rerolling back to Stock Sense is extremly easy with the RUU.exe files provided by HTC.
Problem is the internal storage: you have to use A2Ext, Data2Ext or a s-off the phone to gain access to fastboot commands for custom partition layout. This slows down the phone or can lead to Data integrity problems(Data2ext).
On top of this - the HTC Speakers are crap and the CPU/GPU is just too old.

Although it has more memory on paper, in reality Sense takes up that RAM. And the Nexus S has a lot more internal memory for apps, faster UI, better speaker, slightly better earpiece volume with better sound quality (call quality is important to me), nicer keyboard with a better dictionary, and much better battery life. The overall feel is of a much faster phone although the CPU is not really that much faster, but the GPU is a lot faster and that helps the user experience.
I'm very happy with the Nexus S, and my wife is very happy with my Desire.
I have had both phones and i personally think that the nexus s is much faster and if you decide to put custom roms on the phone then you can get well over 4000 on quadrant aswell ,, not that quadrant is a reliable benchmark ... so i say nexus s all the way!!
I had HTC Desire before my actual Nexus S. My conclusion ? I will never buy another non-vanilla Android smartphone.

^ Nexus series for life.
@OP: If your justification for getting the Desire over the NS because of an additional of 64MB in RAM then you should just go for those new dual core phones coming out.
It's a decision of:
A) Getting faster updates with a phone that is up to par but not dual core.
B) Getting the best hardware for like a month until something new comes out and get fragmented Android releases.
Note that the dual core phones coming out are on 2.2 (Froyo) which are not optimized for dual cores yet. And when that Android OS comes out, it'll take a while for them to get the new version.
Choose your pick. I chose (A)
Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. You helped a lot.(characteristics etc.) ^^

It depends. If you're happy with the Captivate, then why would you change it right now ? Maybe if the Nexus had better hardware, then that would've been something to look for. But if you're happy right now and don't quite need the vanilla Android and it's updates/features, then there's not a good reason to change it. But, if you have problems with the Captivate, or you just feel like you need something that the Nexus brings, or maybe even if you just got bored of your phone, then why not ? It's your choice. Your needs. Your answer.
my question is simple, should i go for the Atrix or should i look for another device in $400 price range? I have heard atrix 2 has some problems with memory card. SGS 2 is way too expensive for me but i like how Samsung supports their products while Motorola never does. So even though it does not have a dual-core processor should i consider buying Nexus S? Or HTC Sensation would be better? I really need your advice guys. Thank you.
SGS2 will have screen burn-in soon anyway.
Sensation and Sensation XE both have the "death grip" issue, at least according to Engadget.
Nexus S will also have burn-in, and isn't it too old already?
Atrix 2 has boatloads of problems, and the memory card issue is even one of the less serious ones. There's hope for the phone though, as Motorola may be releasing a software update soon, since they started looking for beta testers in their forum last month. Also, there are dedicated devs working on a rom now, as far as I know.

The Atrix 2 is a great device, the memory card is simple, just don't use a class 10 card in this phone, and don't install apps on the SDcard (this phone has 4gb, of internal app space). It is built like a tank, and we are working several good ROMs right now, so.... there is even one person working on CM9 which is ICS, it is currently being played with in it's alpha state.
I would not worry too much about Moto and thier crappy support, we are here to make this thing better than stock, and keep improving it.
The Samsung phones are not quite as high quality, but they do have an easier time hacking them, since they don't have locked bootloaders, which makes it much easier to run overcloking and things like that.
We do have those sort of things here too, it just takes us a little longer to get around the bootloader, so hacks are a little slower, that and the fact that there are only a couple devs in here right now.
Thank you guys, i guess Atrix 2 is a better option since I am not that into configuring the device. I might just root the phone, and use a custom rom with it. That is all.

Im in the same situation .. I'll most likely go for the Nexus 4 simply because it's a nexus decide .. First for updates .. Yes please
But on the otherhand the S3 is a better multimedia device seeing as you've got alot more storage compared to the 16GB on the nezus

Yes me too, the storage factor it's an important issue..
Which of the two are the two are easy to hack > root and custom roms.. and easy to restore from soft unbrick..
Any ideas

If money is important, you can buy the nexus from the play store and ask you carrier to forward the money for the new phone upgrade to the payments for the service. This could save some money and you would still be able to use the Nexus 4.
Spec wise, the N4 wins hands down. If storage really is an issue though, then the Quad Core S4 Pro, 2 GB of ram, and the absolutely gorgeous display won't matter. All you'll get hung up on, is how you don't have more than 16GB of storage. Development wise, its a Nexus...'Nuff said.
Look and feel wise, this is the most beautiful device I have ever held. Its not heavy, but it doesn't have a cheap plastic feeling to it like Sammy phones do either. Its light, fits in the hand well, and is just nice to look at it. There's not really any cons to this phone. The only thing you'll notice coming from Amoled displays is the blacks aren't as deep. You get over it quick though the more you use it and notice the lack of over saturation, and increased clarity. And I'll be sure to let you know what Key Lime Pie is like if you go with the GS3.
Also, being contract free, is a truly liberating experience.

i had a GS3 but sold it for a nexus 4. coming from an iphone 4, the GS3 is an excellent device. I wasn't too crazy about how the GS3 handled receiving MMS, but the screen was the ultimate reason for the switch. Everyone talks about how great the AMOLED display is but I just couldn't handle how it viewed when outside in direct sunlight. I never needed external storage and I live in an area that doesn't have LTE yet, so changing to the NEXUS4 wasn't that big of a downgrade for me. Actually, I love it! I did consider the Optimus G, but the lack of Google Now and Jelly Bean pushed me towards the N4. Couldn't be happier..
I would wait a bit for the next Nexus or Galaxy S to come out before deciding, otherwise I would have to say between Nexus 4 and S3. Depends on the functionality and specs that matter to you most.
Maybe you might consider the Galaxy Note 2. Quad core Exynos, 2GB RAM, non-pentile SAMOLED 5.5" screen, S-pen, LTE if you live in an area with it, monster up-time because of the huge removable 3100 mAh battery (I easily do 24 hours on a single charge with 6 hours screen-on time), and SD card.

The nexus4 sounds very appealing as per above comments.. I can live without sd expansion..
What about hacking side, which is easier and in development.. meaning which it's easier to root, flash custom roms etc etc
Does anyone know when either nexus or samsung next new phone will be released..??
