FYI - Possible 3G fix
http://www.androidcentral.com/having-3g-problems-your-thunderbolt-fix-just-few-settings-away
I actually already had the fix with the (#*#*4636*#*# I think) and still lose the 3G symbol at times - I think we need an update from Verizon or HTC to correct this issue (then again it could just be my phone)
I had this problem. I read on another forum that this helps.
Shut-down>>Remove Battery>>Slide out sim card tray with sim card>>slide sim card back in>>put battery back in>>Turn on phone.
I seriously didn't see how that would help, but I tried it and it worked for me.
Before doing that I never saw the "3G" symbol on my noti-bar. Never.
As soon as I did this I saw it, and it worked.

So the CDMA TP2 has a sim card slot in them so they would work as gsm devices if unlocked. I bought one for a month and now im having some issues with it lol. Everything runs fine but this one problem. When i go somewhere and lose signal for over 1min or so i get a 1x. once i regain signal and receive some bars the 1x is still there instead of E or G. The 1x is a problem for me because i cant receive or send messages and phone calls with it. Only way i know that fixes it is to reset the phone but does anyone know how to fix it, fix it? Like a change of settings or installing a .cab file that would fix the problem? or would this be a radio issue?
sorry lol i feel stupid. Its my first time having a cdma/gsm phone so i started exploring the phone settings. turns out i didnt change the baseband to GSM.
change your network settings to gsm and not global
Today as soon as I left a 4G area my 3G does not work. I tried everything and I get no internet connection with 3G or 1X. When I go back into a 4G area it works fine. But if I move back into a 3G area I get no internet connection. Do you think my CDMA modem is fried?
Im having a problem with mine in general where as my thunderbolt was fine. Either I have nothing, 3g and most of the time no 4g. Headed to verizon after lunch.
It's most likely your SIM card. Had the same issue and ended up with a replacement phone for no reason. Go get a new SIM from VZ and try it.
This solution may work but definitely couldn't hurt to try. I had the same problem you seem to be having, and flashed all roms and versions of software and still only 4G would work. I thought the 3G was fried and seen very few alternatives online besides new SIM or new phone. Saddened I went to bed with battery out and SIM out and as soon as I popped them in the next morning, 3G was normal and has been normal for weeks now. I can't explain it but it more than likely has something to do with the SIM card like everyone else is saying.
Dont know why but after a few days it actually started working. Thanks to all who tried to help.
Im in a 3g only area right now. Never really had the no data problem, but suddenly I am and my phone freaks out and I sometimes lose signal for 20 mins. I'm pretty sure someone from verizon said told me not to take out the sim card
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
I had sim card replaced and its still screwed getting replacement sent. They also had me do all kinds of other whack stuff that didnt work.
I lost 3g/internet also and tech support was going to send me another phone, but I tried the new sim card and Bingo. It worked! Thanks for the post, it saved me from having to flash my phone back to stock"for the warranty."
I did all the things they said to do, sim card, format sd card several times and new gmail account. Got replacement phone in and everything is working great so far.
I know there are other threads for SIM errors, but I'm thinking this question may not have been cleared up yet.
I have a newly upgraded 4G Xoom. The SIM is not active, but I'm thinking I may sign up for 4G service in the future. I'm getting the error at the lockscreen that tells me that I either don't have a SIM inserted or there's a read issue. I've rebooted multiple times, reinserted the inactive SIM, and still receive the error.
My question is: Is this a normal error considering I have an inactive SIM? If I do want to get 4G service in the future it probably wouldn't be an issue if it were a bad SIM and it just needed to be swapped, but I'd like to get it fixed ASAP if there's a hardware issue with the Xoom considering I just got it back from Motorola for the 4G upgrade.
If this has been posted already somewhere I apologize.
Ask someone you know that has active service, to try their card in ur device. If no error then bad sim or maybe its not reading it because of inactive sim / service.
Hello guys,
I have my At&t version HTC One X for couple days. I notice there's the problem with network connection which happen 3 times already. I cannot connect to the internet even though I still see 2 or 3 bars of signal and 4g logo. My browser or any other apps won't connect to the internet. The problem's solved if I reboot this phone.
Also, I have seen couple times the notification "preparing sim card" even though I didn't turn off the phone, nor remove the sim card from the phone.
Do you guys think it's software problem or hardware problem?
Anybody has the same problem with me?
Should I get a replacement from the store?
Thanks..
First off, there are 2 threads like this in general...one from me.
Second, I called AT&T and HTC on the matter of "preparing sim card" along with a ! in a triangle and "changing restricted access" on the notification bar...they had no idea what was going on. They both told me to return it, it might be the sim reader going bad.
Just take it back to where you bought it and get another one. I did. So far so good. Good luck!
My husband finally let me root and rom his S3 (I have a Gnex). Unlocking the bootloader and rooting (using Odin) went well. When I installed SlimBean+GApps, however, we started having an issue. He kept losing 3 & 4G signal. We didn't know about the roaming issue, so I had not backed up the IMEI. I flashed Clean Rom, and the issue is partially fixed.
The phone's signal is fine now, 3-4 bars 4G most of the time. The trouble is, we can't dial out to any numbers, and any calls to the phone go straight to voicemail. We've pulled the sim card and let it sit for a bit, but that didn't help. Dialing *228 (as Verizon tech support had him do about 4,583 times) just brings up a message about the phone being activated by the sim card, and roaming capabilities being updated. All tech support had to say was that Google Voice was probably the problem, even though we've both had it for ages with zero issues. :/
Any ideas? I don't really want to unroot and take it in to the Verizon store, but I will if there is no alternative.
EDIT: Just discovered that 4G is only working when "Preferred network mode" is set to Global, rather than LTE/CDMA.
*228 is for 3g phones only, it does absolutely nothing for LTE sim phones. Here's your solution btw.
I knew it! I kept telling them I didn't think that was supposed to do anything when I have a sim card. Crazy first string tech support. They also didn't know my battery was removable.
Will try the things listed in that link, thanks.

Haha Verizon lost credibility with me when I rented their global phone for travel last summer and when I got back to the US the instructions to get my GSIII working began with dialing *228. There wasn't even a warning about it being unnecessary for LTE sim phones.
Good luck and let me know how that goes.
